Charlie Chaplin's speech from "The Great Dictator" together with Hans Zimmer's "Time" from the movie "INCEPTION" = EPIC!!!
Important note: This video was made by me in 2011, I do NOT own any of the copyright to the material shown in this video, neither to the movie "The Great Dictator", nor to "Time" by Hans Zimmer. I am generating ZERO revenue from this video, and do not intend to do so.

I'm sorry but I don't want to be an Emperor, that's not my business.
I don't want to rule or conquer anyone.
I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white.
We all want to help one another, human beings are like that.
We want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery.
We don't want to hate and despise one another.
In this world there is room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.
The way of life can be free and beautiful.
But we have lost the way.
Greed has poisoned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate;
has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed.
We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in:
machinery that gives abundance has left us in want.
Our knowledge has made us cynical,
our cleverness hard and unkind.
We think too much and feel too little:
More than machinery we need humanity;
More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness.
Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.
The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together.
The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men, cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all.
Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.
To those who can hear me I say "Do not despair".
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress:
the hate of men will pass and dictators die and the power they took from the people, will return to the people and so long as men die liberty will never perish . . .
Soldiers: don't give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you, enslave you, who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think or what to feel, who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder.
Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men, machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts.
You are not machines. You are not cattle. You are men.
You have the love of humanity in your hearts.
You don't hate, only the unloved hate.
The unloved and the unnatural.
Soldiers: don't fight for slavery, fight for liberty.
In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written:
- "The kingdom of God is within man"
Not one man, nor a group of men, but in all men; in you.
You the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.
Then in the name of democracy let us use that power. Let us all unite!
Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give youth a future and old age a security.
By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie.
They do not fulfill that promise, they never will.
Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people.
Now let us fight to fulfill that promise.
Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance.
Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness.
Soldiers! In the name of democracy: Let us all unite!

"You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men! You have the love of humanity in your heart, you don't hate, only the unloved hate, the unloved and the unnatural." So powerful. I'm memorizing this for a monologue in college, not for any particular class but for the spirit of what he's saying. It's so powerful, im being called to speak and will!
Chaplain made this ending in 1940, it aired during the darkest hour of world war two, when the Battle of Britain was raging in the skies and the Nazis were on the verge of landing on Britain's shores. Chaplin was insulting and mocking Hitler when it was very possible he could get murdered for it (and was found to have been marked for death in the event of a Nazi invasion of Britain). Hitler himself saw this film and heard this speech about everything that was wrong with his Reich and with his dictatorship and tyranny. He heard Chaplain calling on his Wehrmacht not to obey their Fuhrer and on his own subjects to resist and await his demise
It makes you wonder, what did Hitler think of this film and this speech? And if on April 30th 1945, when his thousand year Reich was burning around him and he was putting his pistol to his temple, did he remember it then at the end?
"Greed has poisoned men's souls"

This speech is so interesting because this was Chaplin’s first foray into speech within his films, he clearly took that opportunity to speak directly to the world, in 1940 the world was gripped by the ravages of WW2 and the US was yet to join, as Churchill put it the US was the “new world” the country was could aid to bring peace to the world, a part of me believes Chaplin wanted to make this clear to the US people, that they could end Europe’s suffering, to think a silent movie legend’s greatest moment wasn’t a slapstick joke or an outrageous stunt, it was a speech.
This is 4th wall mastery. He wasn’t addressing the soldiers in the film but the world in the heart of WW2.

If you’re listening to this, not hearing, but listening to this. There is a difference between hearing and listening. I want you to listen, from October 2023 then you are my friend. And we understand each other, and I am here for you.
When Chaplin met Einstein he said " i admire your work because nobody understands what you say but they all love you"
Einstein replied: " your work is even better, they all love you and you never say anything at all"
Im paraphrasing i little bit but the essential is there😁
Great minds think alike..
And very inspiring
I would give anything to go to a time where Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin exist around me. Of course if I was from that time I probably wouldn't regard them as the legends they are. People 100 years from now might wish they could meet some people from today. Elon musk for one. Shit I'd like to meet the guy lol
@Sultan Abdulhameed II What did Einstein have to do with the development of the first nuclear bombs? The scientific foundation for that came from other scientists.
Einstein's contribution to science may indeed be overrated in general. What he accomplished was on the verge of being discovered by others as well. And, he used material from predecessors to come to his conclusions. The issues of gravity and acceleration were not that original anymore in his era.
Still, he was a great mind, of course. But not as great as popular belief seems to presume. Everybody knows Albert Einstein, but who knows Max Planck's work, except physicists and other scientific academics? What Planck did for science was astonishing. He introduced quantum-mechanics in a time when that concept was too weird as to be acknowledged by most others. Einstein did not accept it either.
@Sultan Abdulhameed II And so is the plane, we invent for the better but ultimately it all became a tool of war
I think it’s backwards haha
This is what America and the entire world needs to hear right now...
Had to come and watch this knowing what's going on right now.
That has nothing to-
Exactly why i'm here
@Sultan Abdulhameed II Without westernization, you would still be living in the stone age. Cars, phones, smart phones, TV, modern medicine, electricity, light bulbs, Internet, planes, trains, movies... all invented by westerners.
Maybe even faster, than we did...
You know fun fact: if there would be no money, we would be so far ahead right now
Каким добрым и хорошим человеком был Чарли Чаплин ❤
Фильмы с его участием вызывают улыбку и слёзы даже столько лет спустя.
Величайший комик и актёр 20 века !
This is a reminder that humanity never learns and is destined to repeat the atrocities of the past. This should be played in every classroom and played each and every day.
This was from 1940, yet it sounds like it was given yesterday about what is going on in the world today. Sad really.
Kyle Pilarski wow.... you’re right.. after 70+ years we are still have these problems. This world needs a change. Not just in letters but we need all and everyone to agree with this.
Except no Nazis!.....oh wait.
Except the Nazis today are the people who think they are against the Nazi's. Ideologically driven and convinced that they are doing right.
Nazi Party had a different ideology and also achieve a lot but fell to their prejudices.
Andrew Scheuerman No, the Nazis today are the ones who use Nazi ideology, speak Nazi rhetoric, and want Nazi control.
"When he was silent the world laughed but when he spoke the world was silent"
Amen to that
Stealing this✊🏻💪🏻
True
Isn't that the truth?
Now more than ever!
No truer words have been spoke through the Silver Screen
Everyone in 2020 needs to watch this.
Agreed
Only times change struggle is the same, people will always feel oppressed by them
We are at the edge of another Cold War sadly :/
Yes we need to watch this to give us hope
We all need hope right now with you know the VIRUS...
"Only the unloved hate; the unloved and the unnatural."
That's powerful.
watercloset99 the quote was from the video we just watched. Why would you have to mention who said it?
+watercloset99 do you ever watch full of the speech in this video? Or just giving a comment without your brain?
such a a great speech that remains relevant even today.
It’s 2024 and the world is still the same Charlie
imagine how powerfull this speech was in 1940. it was just for a movie but it is one of the strongest speeches ive ever heard
And at the start of WWII, literally the only war that was EVER worth fighting. There were literal good guys and bad guys. Even if you look past the propaganda and the fact that even the good guys did evil sometimes, defeating the absolute evil of Nazism and the crimes against the Chinese by the Japanese was ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY!
Truee
@@brianmurphy811 No, they were not not literal good guys and bad guys. Read a little. The USA dropped two nuclear bombs in two cities filled with innocent people. Among many other things, like systematically raping women in the occupied zones to destroy the German race. Imagine what would you think had the Germans succeeded at being the first ones with nuclear weapons.
Also, why do you think German were so desperate to begin with? That country was being oppressed, spoiled and destroyed. There are not good sides. Only desperate, miserable people suffering and being destroyed for the sake of some few rabid, greedy men who control almost everything.
yes! a speech that came from a pedophile. one from a filthy rich that struck your chord. you don`t even know how far from the truth you are or how much you have to grow to see the real speech that he`s having
@@leonardofernandez6488 the Japanese people greatly supported their own government they weren't innocent.
Regardless it was estimated a conventional land invasion would have caused 3x to 4x more civilian casualties and infinitely more military casualties which was mostly made up of conscripts at this point.
Portraying the dropping of atomic bombs on japan as some great evil is a twsting of history
Inspiring because: the words. Depressing because: they still apply.
True
Bernie. Lula. Corbyn.
It's happening.
Vote. Speak. March.
Rise up.
@Isaiah Tufor Wise words, the world is the world, only the naive think they live in a time of change different and better from the millennia of people before them
Atleast we made great steps against the discrimination of different religions, ethnics and genders.
Ok boomer
I find myself coming back to this speech and I'm still shocked at how well it syncs with Hans.
With all human development and education, How is this not shown in every screen in every corner of the world right now?
“We think too much, feel too little”
And Now they feel too much and think too little and let themselves be led astray by false prophets like the MSM and collage's
@@captainpinky8307 Exactly! We need balance!
speak for yourself, jew
Dispatcher whoa whoa whoa, Nazi! Chiiil!
And now we feel too much and think too little... sad time.
an actor who did not speak in his movies for almost his all carer, and when he did, he did the best spech that the humanity ever seen!
Oleo Cerbo how true
This comment must have at least 1k likes I swear ✨
Like someone up in the comment section said: "When a silent man speaks, we become speechless."
H
I cry every time I watch this scene. It’s still so relevant to today’s age.
I appreciate there’s a level of irony at play here too: Charlie Chaplin had people talking and roaring in laughter when he was a silent movie star. The moment he started speaking though… he left us all speechless, in silence and hanging on to his every word.
Bravo.
I watch this every now and then. Been coming back to it more lately….. one of the greatest speeches ever spoken
*Not like most uploads on TH-cam- This video will be relevant until the END OF HUMANITY!*
And if we do not listen to him, humanity will find its end soon.
Truth is never irrelevant.
My balls stink!
This speech and Sun Tzu's The Art of War, holds all the answers.
Now let us fight to fulfill that promise. I am so sorry.
When the man famously known to be silent, breaks his silence, it is he who leaves us in silence.
Roarshack that is the best comment I've ever seen you summed it up
Good wordplay.
However I think his speech has not had the power it should have.
Because he was so much know, simply as a comical existence.
Some hear the message, but many would think it was some sort of skit.
Part of the control. As it is essentially the elites vomiting on the people.
Something they wear as a badge of honour. No shame of deeds.
Case in point: the Harvey Weinstein issue.
Roarshack Senper Fi.... " Dictators free themselves! But they enslave the people!.... well said BROTHER
jesus.........
your comment gave me goosebumps on the back of my neck. Beautiful line
This hits so hard! It's so honest!
EUROPA THE LAST BATTLE.
WATCH IT
No matter how many times I watch this it always brings me to tears...
I finally understood his expression at the end of this speech after the 1000th time of watching it.
Everybody cheers, they all agree but then nothing changes.
Lol, at least the Dutch are trying: th-cam.com/video/xSGx3HSjKDo/w-d-xo.html & th-cam.com/video/5aNtsWvNYKE/w-d-xo.html & th-cam.com/video/7Tc738d7Qzc/w-d-xo.html & th-cam.com/video/H8tznQOERm0/w-d-xo.html
that is such an amazing point, that adds so much depth to this
Quite a negative remark
I don't know where you got this quote from but I love it... It's a sad description of society but not without reason
sneezer truth
This shit makes me cry EVERY single time I watch, even 10 years later. This truly is one of the greatest speeches of all time
Me too
Ditto. And hopefully there is a little part, deep within each of us that remains strangely ever so grateful for each and every time we cry at this beautifully timeless and powerful speech (and accompanying music).
"Opposite to this there stands a completely different world. In that world the highers ideal is the struggle for wealth, for capital, for family possessions, for personal egoism; everything else is merely a means to such ends. Two worlds confront each other today." -AH
I agree so much :')
Meeee toooo 😢😢 I love it
Best speech I have ever heard gave me goosebumps
In 2024, this speech is even more important, Mankind is going the Wrong way. :(
This is the best speech of all time and it hits me all the time
Fake speech by fake people who ruled half of the world.
Dhaval Belurkar like Donkey Donny Trump.
I agree. Best actor of all time.
great speech with an awesome song to compliment the ferocity of it all
Jesus Garcia oh yeah, he ascribes so many wonderful attributes to his own character. I could have given this self aggrandizing speech a pass if he had said “we” instead of “I”. You don’t have to be a dictator to do harm to others just to fulfill your own gratification and base desires.
'Only the unloved hate'
Charlie Chaplin - RIP
Those who are unloved, and hate, are they beyond repair? It's a sad thought.
Out of everything he said, this is what i disagree with, i know many people who where abused/unloved and they are wonderful people, There's always going to be a rotten one in the bunch.
@@TauCu
I agree with you to a certain point.. Charlie Chaplin isn't targeting those that have been abused or who have been unloved but his talking about the hateful sects (groups) we have in our human community !
...and unnatural
“People want to be loved; failing that admired; failing that feared; failing that hated and despised. They want to evoke some sort of sentiment. The soul shudders before oblivion and seeks connection at any price.”
― Hjalmar Soderberg, Doctor Glas
This needs to be part of the curriculum, why is this not showed in schools
This speech isn't important at any day, it's important everyday.
