Patanjali Yoga Sutras Part6 - Swami Mukundananda - Pain is a blessing in disguise.

Swamiji explains, sometimes immediate pain leads to long term enlightenment. God sometimes gives us suffering to turn us away from sin and seek eternal life. Worldly opulence makes us oblivious of the presence of God.
Seeking happiness in the world is the biggest misery. Reversals and despondency in the world makes us seek divine bliss. Progress is not measured by how comfortable our situation is. Progress takes place when situation is adverse and we are normal.
One who is equipoised both in victory and in defeat, in happiness and in distress, in success and in failure is the one who has made spiritual progress. Suffering is when mind dwells in duality, in the absence of knowledge.
About Maharshi Patanjali, one of the six sages who wrote Shad Darshan (the six-philosophical theses,) is a highly regarded Sanskrit scholar with multifaceted dimensions. His Yog Sutras(also known as Yog Darshan) that primarily deals with sadhana or spiritual practices is in the form of sutras. These sutras are “simple yet effective aphorisms that have strung the philosophy,” says Swami Mukundananda ji. The Yog Sutras are not only ancient but also very practical. Modern Psychologists too are discovering its utility in guarding or in regaining mental health.
In this preamble to Patanjali Yog Sutras, Swamiji introduces us to one of the primary requisites for spiritual progress, while answering these questions in a lucid manner - Who is Patanjali? What was the purpose of his birth? How did Yog Sutras come about? What are the elements of Yog Sutras?.
    About Swami Mukundananda:
Swami Mukundananda is a renowned spiritual leader, philosopher, visionary, author, and humanitarian. He is the founder of the yogic system called “JKYog.” Swamiji is a unique sanyasi (in the renounced order of life), with distinguished degrees in Engineering and Management from two world famous Institutes in India, IIT and IIM. He is the senior disciple of Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj.
Swamiji’s enlightening discourses clarify the deepest concepts of the Vedic scriptures with wit, humor, and perfect logic. Along with his discourses, he teaches the comprehensive system “Yoga for the body, Mind and Soul”. For the youth, Swamiji has conducted programs at prestigious universities such as Princeton, Stanford, Yale, MIT, Duke and Kellogg School of Management. He has been invited to speak at various Fortune 500 companies like Google, Oracle, Intel, etc. For children, he has established a special personality development program, called “Bal-Mukund Character Building Program.”

Very understandable Swamiji. When Krishna asked Kunti for boon, she wanted pain(reverse) .She explained that is because of worldly attachment, enjoyment, oppulance etc we are not going towards god but when all this snatched away, then we will look towards God n He will bestow divine bless.

    Swamiji reveals the nature of
this world. God is made this world with dualities---good n bed, day n night, pleasure n pain....etc. progress is not measured how comfortable our situation is, but when situation is adverse....

The saints view pain as a stepping stone in their journey towards God. We need to have the right knowledge to understand the importance of pain in our lives. Thank you Swamiji.

In this beautiful lecture, Swamiji describes that most people, influenced by maya, believe that happiness lies in accumulating and experiencing worldly pleasures. In this state, we tend to forget about devotion toward God but remember him when we experience challenges. However, elevated souls like Kuntidevi ask Lord Krishna for difficulties because during such times, he is the source of support as he was for the Pandavas and Kuntidevi.

Very nice explanation of pain and pleasure in this world. Swamiji explains that pain is a part of this world, it is given to us by God so that we can progress or evolve spiritually. That which seems painful at present but ultimately becomes pleasurable is the cause for our spiritual progress.

There is a very nice practical advice given by Swamiji, which applies to all. We should choose the path of 'shrey' and not 'prey'. Put in the hard work now (in the present) by gaining knowledge and rejecting immediate pleasure. This will yield real happiness in the future.

Swamiji notes that happiness should be contemplated in terms of long-term outcome, not immediate and short-lived pleasures. For example, many students want immediate happiness (i.e., preyashcha) so forgo the pain involved in pursuit of knowledge, however, those who bear the pain and pursue knowledge, experience happiness (i.e., shreyashcha) later on in life.

Pain will make us realize that something is inherently wrong. This will force us to find out the fundamental reason behind our pain. Thus, pain is a blessing in disguise that help us grow in life.

We all go through pain and consider misery and pain as bad . Swamiji is helping us to have a great perspective towards worldly loss and misery. Swamiji explains that pain by itself is not bad. What is it resulting in , that is the important thing. Thank you Swamiji for this wonderful lecture.
