  • Plumbeous Water Redstart: Resident in the Himalayas 6600-13,500 ft. 14 cm. Small squat sturdy songbird of fast-flowing streams, rivers, dams & canals. Female/juvenile- grey, scaly below & white rump.
Insectivorous; makes short fly-catching sallies from rock perch. Continuously fans its tail broadly & pumps it up & down while feeding.
Flies vertically about 20 feet above water & glides down in a spiral.
Male has dark slaty-grey plumage, whitish-grey below, rusty-red tail (often fanned), black bill
High, whistled vocalizations can often be surprisingly audible, even over roaring water.
Breeding- conspicuous courtship display, sings loudly, flicks tail in rapid scissor-like action
Neat cup nest in cavity in rock/tree near water. Aggressive & territorial.
Shot with a Samsung S21 FE5G attached to a Celestron Regal M2 100ED Spotting Scope with an adapter.
