Richard Wright was an amazing player and incredibly humble. He is truly missed by all. I think if you like him, you should listen to Breakthrough and Wearing the inside out. I truly love the live performances. They're both beautiful songs. Thanks for the reaction!
That was a little sexist, wasn't it? We're supposed to notice they're pretty but not say it. Look but don't stare. Flirt without actually flirting. I'm joking of course.
I read somewhere that when they were recording Shine on you Crazy Diamond Syd Barrett actually visited them at the studio while out on a day pass. Don't know for sure if that was true but I have heard that story from other sources as well.
The lyrics are in part a lament for the loss of an original band member, Syd Barrett who succumbed to a severe mental problem and had to leave the band. Hence the lyrics asking if you could tell the difference between heaven and hell, a green field from a cold steel rail, a smile from a veil, etc. Syd became disconnected from reality and David and the others had known him since childhood so the loss to mental illness was painful to watch. But the real lament is the multi part song titled "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" which really gets into Syd's descent into madness. The studio version is the best, and the Pulse version is very good, but one of the most moving is David and Richard playing it in Gdansk Poland, just before Richard passed away: th-cam.com/video/kqXD5NKj4d4/w-d-xo.html (Shine On You Crazy Diamond - David Gilmour live @ Gdansk 2006) Here David gives a moving vocal rendering and you get to see what on the album is described the "glass harp" - 3 guys playing chords with wine glasses, and Richard on the synth is amazing.
I simply love Wish You Were Here. Always have. It literally takes me on a journey in my mind. I especially love the studio version with the wind sound at the end. It feels like I'm flying through emotions.
A few years back Pink Floyd had a reunion concert not long after founding member Syd Barrett had passed away the played this and dedicated it to Syd It made this 68 year old geezer cry.
No band put on live shows like Pink Floyd,... nobody! I'm a 67-year-old Roch guitarist and big Pink Floyd fan, and I've seen them live twice in the 1970s, and both performances were absolutely magical! @@z-man2343 The members of Pink Floyd have already stated the song was written about Syd... I think magical is a good word when describing Pink Floyd. Every time I listen to their incredible songs (and their are so many), I'm amazed at how it is even possible to consistently make such great music. Wish You Were Here is about the founding member of the band Syd Barrett, who had a heavy use of mind altering drugs commonly used by young people in the 1960's.
