Pro tip: send graded card slabs to other graders and get the slabs graded. Double or even triple graded cards are worth 2-3x as much.

I think that's exactly right, I really don't think they have the means to expand enough to actually handle the market the way it is right now, for at least a few years. The obvious idea would be that the newer and smaller companies would try their hand and naturally organize themselves out as either scams or worthy of legitimacy.
IMO, I don’t think so. All this spending came to be because of all the stimulus money floating around. They cut the stimulus bills and cut the extra for unemployment. It should settle down

I agree, to be blunt about it my friends who stay home and smoke pot and complain about capitalism wanted to make quick cash with their stimulus. They are NOT serious collectors/investors.
Pretty sure the backlog at PSA and Beckett is my fault. I submitted 2,781,069 Star Wars TCG cards to Beckett, and 2,269,013 to PSA, about a year ago. I hope one of my Slave Leia foils grades a 10.
CGC will be one of the biggest companies for card grading, they are already the biggest in Comics, coins and the other collectibles. They are also a division of Fanatics who just got exclusives on cards for MLB, NBA and the NFL. Psa and Beckett is now in the ring with a company that can do it faster and cheaper.

@@mrdmd5697 it's probably different at the top, but at the bottom PSAs/BGS are getting fire sold on equal ground to startups and other brands. Been buying all brands for pennies on the dollar. BuT have had surprising luck having people accept lowball offers on psa8s and below. Was waiting for the the massive covid submission returns to stock up on my oddball PC stuff , and it has paid off. Will Definitely be interesting to see the arbitrage that takes place among grading collectors/buyers/flippers.
Who is crazy enough to grade cards worth less than the cost of grading? That is insane to me.

Well...if it makes the card worth more than the price of grading then it makes sense. But most likely a lot of it is just speculative. It seems like we might be entering an era similar to what comics entered back in the day, where people were going after every comic and collecting them even though they weren't really all that rare or desirable. Kind of like Tulips back in the day.
You haven't seen the ridiculous premiums people put on grades. A $5 getting a PSA 10 can sell for $400. Yes people are dumb enough to buy them.
CGC has a history with CBs so if you're comfortable there i believe their standards are equivalent to BGS

cgc is gonna start getting more and more recognition for cards over the next year or 2 theres already a massive flood of cgc cards in the pokemon space, from what Ive bought and seen they grade really tough as well.
They have the pedigree from their presence in the comic grading industry. They are the sleeping giant imo, and are best positioned to overtake/stand beside the big 2.
CGC is established and has decent turnaround times. I've been submitting to them exclusively since they started accepting Magic cards.
CGC has clout through the comic industry and their cousin company NGC is a market leader for graded currencies/coins.

I think there is a place for these small businesses particularly outside of the US, as the best, cost effective way to slab to protect your collection. I use a couple of companies in Australia for that reason. Anyone who is hoping to add value with these smaller guys is going to be unhappy.
True. Here is Canada, BGS/PSA, even before Covid was too costly (Initial cost + exchange rate + shipping + insurances booth ways + shipping again + taxes + brohers fee), I graded very few myself... sometime for high value cards it went near 500$ for 1 card.
I still purchase BGS already graded cards and I love them. But when grading my personnal raw cards, i use MNT Canada. Even though they are small, their standard is extremelly high (Almost impossible to get a 10/10) and price to grade is correct (Not cheap, but affordable).
Agree with the logic here. But if you are based anywhere outside of the USA, Beckett and PSA are not accessible and carry further shipping risk too (and added cost to ship).
There is a "new" grading company that CFB will be using thats an old coin grading company from NZ. Time will tell if the premium can catch BGS (they do subgrades).
The first company to show reliably AI graded cards and consistency that will come with that is probably going to take the cake here

CGC is the way to go. Well-known, respected and established in the collectibles market. Their turnaround times are decent, and their labels are uniform across everything they grade. I've been submitting to them ever since they started accepting Magic cards, and I won't stop now.
Oh, let's not forget CGC is very good at building population reports / census reports for the items they grade. If they do that with their upcoming video game division, they'll already have a massive step up on WATA.

They're too new in the card world. Wait till after the two big companies come back. The value will drop futher down. They're already valued less on average compared to the two.

@@Reggaetonaldo If anything, the opposite will be true. CGC is harsh and consistent enough that you could easily cross over CGC to PSA/BGS. When PSA/BGS come back, this will be much easier. Right now, because of PSA/BGS being closed, no one's buying CGC slabs to crossgrade.

BTC brought something new to the table, the new companies aren't bringing anything, they are simply fulfilling the increased demand.

PCG is fine. Backed by Good Games here in Australia. Stuff sending my cards to the states to get graded.
Waiting for the graded new comic crap to implode. I could be wrong (I own a few BTW so can't really say much) but it just seems comic shops are mass grading new comics to the point that a 9.8 will mean nothing soon.
This is why I'm extremely concerned about the state of the market -- as it stands, the majority of the comic books I still own (sold off half of them years ago, and I'm down to a longbox) are not worth sending in to be graded. I have signed books I acquired in-person years ago (Chris Clarement and Adam Kubert, among others) that likely wouldn't pass muster on any sort of grading service because I didn't pay the upcharge at the time I acquired the books to have them authenticated/graded. Anything below a 9.6 is functionally meaningless from a cost/benefit standpoint, and I don't have the time or inclination to micromanage or try to figure out the intricacies of the market.
I believe a key point was missed. The small newer start ups probably won’t make it, but they’ll hopefully force the big 3 to make much needed changes in grading. Number one being transparency. We’ve interviewed 2 new grading companies on our Cardboard Addicts podcast this summer and both are providing much needed advancements from AI grading to just being more transparent when our cards receive their grade. Pretty amazing to know and see where the issue was that caused your believed to be 10, returns as an 8 or 9 grade. After all, we are paying them to do a job that has been done half a*s and excepted as normal for far too long. So many other issues with grading companies but thats a debate for another time
Exactly! I agree I will say that a lot of what Rudy said was accurate. But if the smaller companies can force the hand of PSA, BGS and CGC to make some changes and be more transparent then that’s a win for us the collectors. Sadly I don’t think anything will change. They don’t need to change and won’t need to change because of the mentality that if it ain’t PSA, BGS, CGC it ain’t worth a damn.
They have so much business they won’t change. The only real hope is that a company that is transparent makes it to the big leagues. But PSA and Beckett held the big two forever before CGC came in. The only way CGC got in was because of it’s already sheer size and being in the grading space for comics and even then there was a lot of collectors that just didn’t want it to happen or didn’t think it would work out for them.
@@ZenturionXYZ I agree as well. The hope is the now big 3 will be pushed to make changes but it is doubtful sadly. Only blame can be placed on the collectors if they aren’t willing to help force the change. Problem is, too much money is at stake for so many, they won’t change themselves, and it’s understandable when you have a large chunk of capital invested like that. Another issue I have with the big 3 that many of the smaller companies aren’t doing, taking a piece of our pie. We’re paying you to do a job; grade our card. They believe they deserve part of your pie if your pie is worth any value. This to me is a huge conflict of interest. This is what causes corruption. How many times have we seen bull sh*t 10s from PSA over the years? It’s been far too many. Grading cost should be a fixed value, period. It’s the only way to prevent corruption, or as close to. And this doesn’t mean they should be charging you 600 to grade your Michael Jordan Fleer rookie card either. Again, grading companies deciding they want a piece of your pie. Just mpo at the end of the day.
I would buy the 10s from the smaller companies if they are really cheap , psa has no special 10 power , if it's a 10 at Timmy taco shack , it's probably a 9 or 10 at PSA also.....
Some of these slabs go for 10% of the price of a PSA , I would definitely buy them, like I said PSA is NOT special , The quality of the card does NOT know what company put it into a slab , don't let Rudy confuse you , PSA is NOT worth the money , I may not be "informed" but I am no fool , a 10 over here , is normally a 10 over there , it's just a card...
Dude just wants PSA prices to go up bc that's where he put his money....but I see it different , the quality of the card has zero connection to who graded it , a grade does not change the quality of the card...

If you were able to get cards like that graded for $2-5 a card, sure, I could see the collector's mindset of just having it... but in current age, paying the PSA/BGS per-card price (even at the low-tier) for anything besides the top 1% of any set is just pissing money into the wind.
I saw some Pokémon cards graded at comic con by a company that has graded comic books forever… I believe it was cgc or something like that but they have been in the grading business for so long… think something like that will last long term considering it’s their market they have been in for decades?
so I recently bought my first slab from a con, complete noob, and some of my cards I think might be quite valuable if I waited and hedged my bets for PSA. But I have a card of my all time favourite pokemon (buizel/floatzel) which I have no interest in selling (in fact I don't really want to sell any of them, just own them with the knowledge that they might be worth something); more so just preserving and displaying for my own personal enjoyment. What I'm scared of happening is that this accessability to grading companies disappearing, and not having the opportunity for this service to my cards. If PSA immediatley get inundated with cards and they close again, maybe these grassroot graders will get several more chances to gain a foothold and solidify their spot in the marketplace when PSA get themselves together.....but hey, this is something only the market can decide
This suddenly reminds me of dog registration. There is the AKC which was founded in 1800s and then there is the ACA has been running a registry since the 1980s. I remember when my mom wanted a purebred Mastiff, the breeder was some gentlemen in the backwoods of Virginia. The mother/father dogs appeared purebred, but they were not ACA registered, so their pups were not. He had his two dogs registered under the ACA and this was a big issue about the cost of the puppies.
I was completely confused why this mattered because I knew my mother wasn't going to breed her new dog intentionally, and wasn't going to take it to shows. In the end we had one litter and she did sell off all but one puppy, but had to keep the price lower since they were only ACA certified. She got two very loyal and lovable dogs out of the whole ordeal. So when you're comparing card grading companies it just reminds me of dog registration.
If one were going to start a new card grading company now to take advantage of the (probably temporary) approximate collapse of PSA and BGS, and one wanted to actually win and continue to be successful and meaningful once PSA and BGS come on line again, one would want to offer some sort of distinguishing attribute. Some way in which one's product was different or better than what PSA and BGS offer.
As far as I can tell, the upstarts currently are all "we'll put your cards in a slab that's almost as nice looking but is otherwise basically the same". So, yeah, I imagine that they'll fade back into obscurity once the "big dogs" come back to the table. (If BGS and PSA can manage to avoid too much more scandal, anyway)

Rudy has two CGC graded comic books behind him. I'm surprised he doesn't have faith in their trading card division.
Also, I've seen multiple PSA 10s that deserved far lower grades.
where did he talk about CGC in particular ? He simply mentioned that a lot of the new dogs won´t make it and that, and that many of them probably will not carry a premium like PSA and BECKIT do now, and I think he is right about that. Maybe CGC will be the big exception to that, maybe not, either way that does not make him wrong

CGC is reputable for TCGs. The market has pretty much bought in to them as the 3rd big grading company.
I 100% agree with you and the newer investors are paying triple or more for a PSA 9 then I use to pay for PSA 10! Plus it will be a common card! I don’t think many grading companies will make it when the market changes! Awesome video!
SGC is a great company to use for grading. They don't just pass out 10's either, I've broke out a handful of cards from BGS and PSA to test their grading and they are actually a bit more strict when it comes to certain cards.
I've also gotten comfortable with SGC. Really like their slab design and they grade far more consistently than PSA or BGS in my experience.
I dislike it when grading companies grade certain cards harsher than others. It literally ruins the idea behind grading and the good faith behind it. I've noticed it with PSA

Although PSA only takes cards worth 2.5k dollars or more, if you do have an expensive card to get graded, it gets done fast.
I recently sent in an arknight shard for grading and it took em about a week to grade and ship back.
I was surprised.
Note that I had to do the super express 300 dollar grading. I think that's the second cheapest they offer ATM
I've been "pre-grading" cards with companies that appear to have the strictest grading. It allows me to properly catalogue and protect cards while giving me a solid idea of the psa/bgs potential so that I can optimize my submission when the big boys reopen. I also see plenty of undervalued "tough" compny graded cards to buy to crack as well.

Probably not gonna happen. Everything is more expensive now, so their cheapest options are probably going to spike in price, hopefully no more than $30/card.

@@ianundercover6295 I understand that, but he still has to answer to his investing partners. Hiring cost has gone up and they are hiring more and more people at higher salaries, I doubt he can justify a sales margin below the pre-pandemic level.

Beckett is going down I think. A lot of bad press coming out of their grading methods and founders being in jail for fraud and corruption etc.
That doesn’t matter. The people who hold the slabs already matter. The company could go out of business and that effects the market zero. It’s still on the holders to set the price.
@@ZeRockOfficial To say it would have zero effect is a little aggressive. Set collectors are generally going to want uniformity in their collection. Its not like BGS graded cards would go to zero, but in this hypothetical post-BGS world, as more people build sets under different grading companies, you can assume at least some price fall off on BGS slabs as sellers start to realize their piece of cardboard wrapped in hard plastic isnt exactly what the market is looking for... However, its safe to assume the mega-grails, super rare, high grades wouldnt dip much, if at all, because then you're dealing with a supply issue (i.e. I'm not going to be able to find a raw Gem Mint Alpha Lotus on the Market, so this BGS slab that says its a Gem Mint Lotus is a guarantee that if I buy it I can cross grade it to my slab of choice and be confident it will come out Gem Mint on the other side)... All this is purely hypothetical though as its very difficult to imagine BGS going under.
Not about the money. If their grading quality declines and continues to be erratic and not uniform card to card, then it’s slab value might go down

wow, rudy finally mentioned Final Fantasy TCG in his video again
I received a 1 rating on a pristine card from SGC but the letter said it was authenticated as a 10. When I contacted the company about the obvious mistake they graciously offered to fix the mistake and pay for shipping both ways but when I got the card back it was in worse condition and rated a 7. It's so obvious that the person opened the plastic case and damaged the card and then graded it after they damaged it.... So now my pristine error Sarah Jean Underwood POTY signed copy is worthless! All the good parts are covered in some weird sticky substance now too and closed within the case? Never again will I use them!

I wouldn't send a basic land to PSA or BGS. They are horrible companies. I would use the CCG for any grading, if that were my thing.
I totally totally agree with you. Only point is CGC has now become one of the top 3 graders in the world.
PSA, Beckett, and CGC will never go down in price. The rest of the grading companies will never get to their level. 🙂

I primarily use BGS for Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh, PSA for Pokémon and MTG, And then I'm in love with DSG for Metazoo! The arcane label designed by one of the Metazoo artists Kris Kampmann is beautiful! I understand the market in TCGs is picky especially when you're talking about individual collections but you can't always just cancel out a company. I still like CGC and DSG for certain things.

Totally agree with the points you make in this video, except I would include CGC with PSA/BGS. If anything, CGC is more established than PSA/BGS in the collectibles world. All of those 7 figure comic sales you see? All from CGC. I've found their card grading to be harsh, accurate, and consistent. No reason to mention them in the same breath as trash, basement grading companies.
in my opinion its because of their labels. If it didn't look like something out of 2001 I think it would dominate.
@@Craigslist444 Yeah, I don't disagree. I certainly prefer how PSA labels look. But I now collect both (although the vast majority of what I have is PSA) and I've gotten used to CGC labels. Not a fan of the shade of blue they use, though.

For the record, CGC is considered one of the Big 3. Their name deserves to be next to PSA and BGS.
surely there will be the same scenario... thousands of people with sets of these start up company graded cards who want to continue using the company and completing the set with with poke grade , Ace grading ect? however I'm sure there will be a drop but not everybody can/will be spending even more money re grading with PSA and Beckett especially considering peoples financial circumstances post pandemic , I think these new companies play there part for people who want an affordable option to grading and building there collection.
that's why i dont understand why either PSA or BGS haven't opened an European or even Asian location.

PSA and BGS for pokemon and other such card games might always hold that king spot in peoples mind but like scg for sports cards I think cgc has a place as well since they are massive in comic grading. The other ones i have no opinion on nor care much for them. Im a PSA fan myself my only RL card is BGS 9 cradle but psa is were I love to grade

Sooo many stories of opening old sealed wax and then slabbing the pack with a High grade to prevent or disincline people to crack them revealing the scam. Stolen cards, lost cards, damaged cards

Dont really agree Rudy on the slab grade value when its low. A slabbed card is a guarantee that it is not fake for people who can not distinguish real from fakes or those who got scammed.

i started my own grading company. unless it is physically bent in half and has dog eared corners, its a minimum 9.5. if you slip a $100 in the envelope though ill give it a gem mint 10
I just sent you 15,000 basic lands to grade. Pretty sure they survived multiple natural disasters. The "processing tip" is buried somewhere in the pile. I apologize for shipping them in a garbage bag. I didn't have a card box to spare.

The only card I have graded is an alpha Wall of Wood. None of my power, duals, reserved list stuff is graded. Because I cant play with it and its harder to sell for a reason.

All sayings come from people doing the opposite. The fact that there is a saying: "Buy the card, not the grade." means that many people are buying the grade.
This might be a little different in europe since we have very limited access to PSA or BGS

PSA or Beckett shouldn’t have control of the whole card grading market. It makes for highly overpriced cards which is bad for the hobby. Competition by other reputable grading companies like SCG and FCG among a few keep a nice balance in the hobby. It’s similar to saying that you should only buy a Ford or a GM product when there are a lot more options out there.

Some of these new grading companies do not authenticate the card, only grade it. Do your research before using. Rudy is providing a service for us here to be cautious.

I don't think PSA will EVER open up to grade cards for less than $150/card. That's a dream. HGA will hold value because of submission limits. BGA will stay the same. But many many more people are grading cards today than ever before. PSA and BGA will never be able to handle the load of the market. And they don't have to. They'll sit comfortably in the realm of grading only very high value cards.
I get annoyed by the dozens of new grading company's that allot of people are using.
I don't buy the cards if they are graded with any company that isn't PSA/BGS/CGC
The people who use the other company's for grading don't see the issue, they often like the slab design better
all grading is a scam you paying extra for a number
So as far as Metazoo which has made you big money, DSG is one of the most legit startups I’ve seen. With custom labels done by the metazoo artist. And QR codes with links to section by section grading doesn’t make it a legit grade.
