Smith & Wesson FPC vs. Kel-Tec Sub 2000 9mm Carbine Shootout - Which One Would I Choose?

  • The S&W FPC and Kel-Tec Sub 2000 are both great carbines, but is one better than the other? My son and I shoot the S&W and the Kel-Tec carbines side-by-side to see which one we would choose between the two.

    Well in NY it is banned as it is in other states unless the arbitrary assault weapon bans are repealed. This is the type of DefenderCarbine that could be kept locked in a teacher, principal or school safety officer, rapidly deployed and save lives. Spare mags on stock and one in the gun, should stop a maniac in their evil tracks. S&W should launch a campaign offering training and school discounts

    I have a Keltec. I consider it my bug out rifle because it fits in my pack. When I first got it, I didn't like how it hurt my shoulder, but after a few upgrades from MCarbo, it has a much lighter recoil and shoots great. The big advantage of the Keltec is its ability to use Glock mags. If you own a Glock, it makes sense to own the Keltec!

    Both are interesting approaches to the folding PCC idea and both have their strengths and weaknesses. I'm a S&W guy so I'd probably go for the FPC but the Sub2k can clean up nicely with some aftermarket parts. Nice to see you guys having a nice day shooting out in the desert.

    The cost sets these two guns in a different category. You can buy 2 Keltec’s for the price of one S&W. I have an M carbo mount which allows you to fold the Keltec without removing the red dot. My Keltec uses Glock mags which are really inexpensive. I use a 33 round magazine with mine. The Keltec is lightweight compared to the S&W. There’s also a lot of mods already available for the Keltec. I say right now there no real advantage for buying the S&W unless spending more money is your goal. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    • @oldtwinsna8347
      @oldtwinsna8347 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      But the Mcarbo mount goes for $150 and so this in itself will equal out the cost differential right there in itself. It seems that if you're going for the dollar proposition and long as you don't want to use a red dot then that is a good option. But if you're a red dot must-have then I'd do the FPC as it's engineered for that right upfront and one less part to worry about in the long run.

      As of 10 minutes ago you can purchase a new sub 2000 for as low as 299 and it comes with iron sights. The Smith & Wesson goes for as low as 575 and doesn’t ship with sights. The cost of sights worth putting on can be as low as 30 bucks for the cheapest set. That’s twice the cost just to be usable. Add the 150 for the sight mount for the sub 2000 and that brings you to 450, still 150 less than the S&W. You can find the Sig Romeo 5 online for 99 dollars that takes the sub 2000 to 550 with sights and adapter. That’s still cheaper than the S&W before you even buy sights for the S&W. The sub 2000 is extremely accurate. That’s 550 vs 700 for gun and red dot. Now let’s talk magazines. My sub takes Glock mags, known for reliability and durability at about 15-20 percent cheaper than the S&W magazines. I have at least 20 Glock mags for my various guns that use Glock mags. So where’s the advantage for purchasing the S&W.

    I have had the Kel-Tec Sub 2K in 40 S&W for many years. I got it second hand. Had some issues with it and Kel-Tec fixed it for free - twice. Probably my hand loads. It likes the 180 gr 40 cal bullets best. It is a blow back operated, has a heavy bolt/buffer weight that makes the recoil impulse substantial because of the weight. Not sharp or uncomfortable but it moves a bit. I got the Red Lion fore end/handguard that can rotate so you can keep a red dot sight mounted on it without removing it. Shoots very well. and you do need to watch out for the reciprocating bolt handle. Sub2Ks can be ordered with several different magazine capable designs. I have Glock magazines. Normal size is 15 rnd, I also have 20 rnd. Thanks for presenting.

    You guys are great. I am a S&W fan and a KelTec fan. I spent today shooting the S&W 686+ with my son, just to get in some revolver time. After watching your video I wished I would have brought along the Sub2000, lol. I love that little carbine and I have a ton of Glock magazines. The Sub2000 has been extremely reliable and accurate and it's extremely lightweight and compact. I have never had a problem with it and it's compatible with Glock, Beretta, CZ75B, Smith & Wesson and SIG Sauer magazines. MCarbo makes an optic mount that allows you to keep an optic mounted to the Sub2000 and still fold it, although the mount moves to accomplish that. I have the MCarbo optic mount and it does hold zero, if it didn't I would say so. BTW, right now you can get a KelTec for less than $350 with rebate and MCarbo gives military and LEO discounts if you wanted the optic mount. Price is something that wasn't discussed in the video but the S&W does cost more than the KelTec and for some people that is a big factor. The FPC looks great, I can't wait to get an opportunity to test one out. Nice shooting as always guys. 🤠👍

    The Beretta Cx4 remains my favorite but thanks to both of you, I have two new perspectives on two more 9mm carbines. I appreciate you both! 8D

    As I mentioned in one of your other videos, I was ready to buy the Kel-Tek when the S&W came out so I decided to wait a bit. After seeing this video, I've decided to go with the S&W. Since I don't have any Glock magazines and that was your only real critical point against the S&W, that's not really an issue for me. I've shot the Kel-Tek, but the extra mags, mag storage and carry case that the S&W offers put it over the top. Also, the foldability with an optic attached is a plus. Thanks to you both for doing the homework for me.

    It's nice to see Ed out shooting with Pops. I was a little surprised by the recoil, but that's probably the design. The SW looks heftier, the KT a little minimalist. I'm going to check Ballistics By The Inch to see how much FPS the 16" barrel adds (in general).

  • @motorgearhead
    @motorgearhead ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have a 2000 in 40 S&W. The 16” barrel adds 200 fps to just about any factory 180 grain I’ve tested… that’s 10mm performance. And it’s stupid accurate at 50 yards with the factory optic. 4” sporting clays are a pop at will challenge once you become familiar with the sight. I keep it as a truck/bugout gun. Perfect home defense. Love mine!

    I like the KelTec for it's simple Volksturmgewehr TEOTWAWKI vibe. The S&W is definitely more refined and the added benefits of a better mount system for optics and non-reciprocating charging handle. If mag availability is not a problem, then the best is the Beretta CX4

    GREAT VIDEO ! Thanks! I’ve got a Kel-Tec Gen.2 and really like it. I like the feel and handling of the Kel-Tec, but don’t have the Smith. I personally like the look better also, but of course that’s personal choice. The Kel comes with a sight which is really nice.
    I think you two have way too much fun making these videos!

    $100 rebate on the Kel-Tec right now. Spring 2023. That makes it around $350 to $400 ALL IN and perhaps $300 cheaper than the S&W. Add generic Glock 17 & 33 round mags for $10 to $20 a piece and you've got a really affordable package.

    Superb team shooting. Never shot either, but watching your video, the Smith edges out the Kel Tec. Selling point for me is the included 3 mags. Love my Kel Tec P17 and CMR30. Like my Smith Bodyguard M&P Shield w/laser too. All the best! "The JJ" SW Penna.

    Enjoyed the head-to-head comparison, and also the fact that this is a father and son having fun together video. 👍👍Like you, Mixup, being able to use Glock magazines is important, so my choice would be the Ruger PC-9 takedown carbine.

    I've had multiple Sub2Ks, I have one in .40 now. 40 out of a carbine has the energy of 10mm out of a pistol, can't do that with the S&W. The Sub2K is much thinner when folded and can fit under a car seat or in pretty much any briefcase, so it wins hands down in compactness/concealability. I've also kept a red dot on the Sub2K on a QD mount, just moving it to the bottom rail when folded and it holds zero well enough for a PCC. Since the KT has built in sights you don't have to use an optic whereas you do on the S&W.
    The S&W is more chunky but looks higher quality and more substantial, and you don't have to move the optic around. Also the ability to hold 2 extra hi cap magazines I REALLY like. KT had an accessory for the 1st gen Sub2K that would hold one extra mag but it's unobtanium now.
    If extreme compactness/concealability is not a factor I'd probably go for the S&W, but for me it is so I'm sticking with my Sub2K.

    It is an awesome folding rifle, and I have no complaints or regrets. However, I am considering the S&W folding rifle as well. I just have to save my money if I am going to purchase the S&W.
