  • Quality control is always a concern when it comes to "inexpensive" .22 rimfire ammo. Is the Thunderbolt ammo worth $30 to $40 a box?

I have never had a problem with Remington or Winchester ammo for my 22's. I don't ever recall having a round that never fired. Thanks for sharing the fun. I recall when I could buy a brick of 500 for $7 or $8 and 9mm for $6 to $8. I miss those days.

I haven't tried the Remington. I purchased a 50 box of Winchester subs (they're everywhere in Australia), and I couldn't believe the performance. I was astounded. Out of my CZ 457
they grouped better than quite a few of the "boutique" rounds.

@@davidbrayshaw3529 over here the guys i know consider Winchester as the standard!! comparing price to performance and value Winchester beats the other American made ammo! (Seller and Bellot would be Europe's Winchester if you're curious!!) and to be fair this ain't the old Remington ammo either it's a new company the original Remington ammo went to complete shit in 1987 and was slowly trying to come back before they went bankrupt and got sold off!!

@@keithmoore5306 I'm not surprised that the Winchester .22's are your "go too" ammo.
I'm no expert and I could be totally wrong, but CCI seems to be the most popular, here, but Winchester is probably more available. It's what's in rural hardware stores.
Like I said, I've never tried Remington. I don't even know if I've seen Remington .22 lr. for sale, here. I'll keep my eyes open and grab a box if I see it.

I love this stuff, its definitely my favorite bulk .22 lr it's worked the best out of the ~6 boxes I've shot for multiple guns. Which each one being a different platform is great must say something about it.

The missus and I would get this as our bulk 22 ammo from time to time. It ran in everything, but there were quite a few light strikes. It's definitely better than that abysmal Federal "match" white box garbage, but only by a little. The Thunderbolt bulk boxes have increased in cost in our area to the point that CCI Minimags have become our go-to 22 ammo now. Reliable and a lot cleaner. Another great video, sir!

I just don't understand what they have going on, I shoot all the time and I never have an issue with .22LR. I even found some very old 22LR ammo in my uncles closet after he passed away, they had been there for 40 years I bet and was green. All of them fired without a hiccup.

I have one gun with a weak hammer spring. These are the only cartridges that work reliably in that gun. Many criticize Remington's cartridges, but nothing else works as reliably in that gun, at least not cci, geco, federal, norma, aguila, eley,sk.I recommend giving it a try, no one should avoid a particular brand "just because". Rimfire cartridges can be tricky sometimes

My problem with some other brands of remington ammo is the cases were fragile. When using the CMMG .22LR conversion kit. If the 25 round mag is loaded fully or mostly loaded to 25 rounds, the cartridge cases would bend during the feeding process resulting in failure to feed. Been awhile, so I do not remember exactly what remington loading it was. The mexican high velocity aguila ammo works 100%.
Your dedicated .22 AR style gun had no such problems. But your magazines do look similar the the CMMG mags. PSA 5.56 upper was used.

I totally agree with your comment regarding the vastly superior consistency of Aguila 0.22 ammo vs. the R. ThunderboIts. I have been a dedicated small bore shooter for 60 years and from my first box out of my first brick of Aguila I have seen it outperform both my long held and treasured old stock match ammo of every description and box after box of the very same but recently bought match ammo (except batch numbers of course!) and almost all their newer variations of both long and long rifle and subsonics and supersonics. I am no longer surprised by the Aguila's 3/8" groups at 40 and 50 yds and seldom see any Aguila group greater than 0.5 - 0.6" at 50 yds (including the first of day cold barrel group). My goto is a Savage Mk II FVSR, rail mounted 3-12x air rifle scope, original plastic stock that I painstakingly shaved to float the barrel. The Accutrigger is dialed ALL the way down (and then some!) to 2.1 lbs. Day-in, day-out, the Mk II fed with Aguila Eley Prime 0.22 long rifle 40 gr subsonic solid point, very seldom costs me more than just one small black round dot patch on a Shoot n See at either 40 or 50 yds. In my experience it is the finest 0.22 ammo I have ever bought and its low price just makes me smile!

I still have a ton of this ammo from the late 80s and early 90s… it still fires with very few problems (no more problems than for .22 LR bought more recently). Each year before hunting season I’d pick up a new brick for squirrel season. I usually never shot all 500 rounds in a year. It’s from all sorts of lot numbers and years dumped into an old wooden ammo crate/box. After high school I joined the Army for 20 years and only shot it sometimes when I came home for a week or two each year. After I retired from the Army (2013), I went home and found it… I shot most of it now, but still have some left.

I was sure glad to see this test today. Remington Thunderbolt has been my go-to ammo for many decades ever since I got my first .22 rifle. It is also the most accurate 22 rifle that I have so with a 3 to 9 power scope on it it's the one I use to test different brands of ammo and the Thunderbolt always groups tighter than any other brand that I've shot. My tests are always on a bench at 50 yards so I was glad to see that you were getting the same results as I do on your accuracy test. It lets me know I must be doing something right.

As I use 22lr for training purposes as it's cheap in a M&P 22 and M&P 15-22 I've found the Federal bulk crap good for failure drills as it never fails to delivers. LOL

Awesome cool video thumbs up. When I was 13 or 14 my nephew and I used to buy boxes of 22 LR at the local hardware store for .99 cents a box. We would go out on the railroad tracks and shoot most of the day. Can you imagine that in today's world? lol, 13-year-old kids bought 22 shots took out rifles, and started practicing. Kids today could not do that must less buy the Ammon on their own without an adult present, lol. I like 22 guns of all kinds.
