How to use a spare router as a range booster for your Wifi Network

  • I have made an updated version of this video that is more clear to understand. See it here: • How to use another rou...
    Please note that this won't work for all routers. It will work on most Linksys routers, which, in my opinion, are the best you can get.
    This video will show you how to use your older wireless router in conjunction with your new router (via a long ethernet cord to another part of your house) to boost your network's wireless signal throughout your house. Note: You will have to end up with 2 different wireless networks BUT they are both on the same internet network for you to use for internet access. You will need to connect them via a long Ethernet cable from a client port on the first one to a client port on the second router. The 2nd router's DHCP server will need to be turned off as the first router will be assigning local IP addresses and the second router MUST have the option to change from "gateway" to "router", or a similar option, for this to work. On a standard linksys admin or configuration page, it is under "advanced routing".
    PS: I'm sorry about the quality of this video/details left out. I put it together really fast. Some details are in the annotations. I also didn't expect this to get this many views.

    I have struggled with setting up this exact router to extend my network for months. I have had two different networking "professionals" here to attempt to set this up for me, neither of whom accomplished this task. After watching this video and taking notes, I just setup my network exactly how I wanted it. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

    Great video! Had no idea this could be done but really glad I had saved the vintage router. This will save people lots of money doing this to increase range of their router. My god....I love you!! you are my savior!! I have 4 routers at home and since I have upgraded my Verizon and setup a new router. My old one can not be used. Some how it just won't work and can not have internet access. It was fine with old Verizon router in basement and linksys upstair (1st Floor). When the Linksys one doesn't work, I keep trying others. I ended up with 4 routers, Linksys old one, D-link, Verizon older router, latest Linksys. None of them can work with the one is basement. I am so glad to find your video and tried it. (after all the bridge did not work or other problem, I was so frustrated.) Thank you so much for making this video. I think I can return the latest Linksys one ( It costs me $179) back to Costco. By the way, when you said change the Gateway to Router, I was having hard time to change it. It won't let me make changes. It kept coming back to Gateway. I just forget about it and go ahead to leave it the way it is. But it still work fine. I have AC wifi plug to send the Wifi up to 1st Floor since there is a concrete barrier. And then 1 Floor is using AC wifi with cable plug into this Linksys router which has follow your setting changes. It works!! Wow....it works now. I have good internet signal on the 1st floor now.

    With my ASUS RT-AC3200 I get good signal across the street in my friends back yard, and covers my entire back yard also, no need for another. Router to saturate the wifi bands.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2.4ghz has 11 channels while the 5ghz has many more. Either type of router (some have both at the same time) would automatically cycle bands to get the least interference to the receiver. So your problem wouldn't be an issue unless you had like 20 routers within a couple feet of each other.

    I have a second (old) Asus rt-n56u router. I wonder if i should plug it with ethernet cable to actual router in terms to get a second transmitter, as in your vid. I wonder if the fact of my using wifi usb key adapter to my PC spoils the game?
    Also, can i get rid of shitty wifi adapter and use my Asus upstairs as a receiver instead, picking the signal from the actual router downstairs? I tried but messed up all these 'properties' and network settings aaargh lo Thanks so much for competence and sharing!

    Great video. Out of curiosity, which Wi-Fi was the main connection to the internet? The Linksys 1.0.0.05 MSHOME or the NETGEAR85? I’m looking to do this for a friend and want to make sure we know which we’re connected to at a glance. I was thinking of the main one inside, then Linksys WRT54 on each end of the building with an external antenna and name each one the same name as the main router, except add north or south so it’s easy to tell which one each client is using. Thanks in advance.

      ***** I have my second one set up as both a wireless access point and for wired connections - I have my phone on the wireless and my xbox on wired from it. So you could do that. And yes, you could turn off the wireless radio in the wireless settings in the router admin page (you could just use a cheap ethernet switch if you are just going for wired).

    Will I be able to plug in like a desktop computer to the second router and gain internet access that way?

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dr Black13 Yes. You can use all the rest of the client ports on the second router for any devices.
      The WAN port is usually set aside from the rest on most routers. Regardless, the WAN port should be empty on the second (or subsequent) routers because we're using the first router to set local IP addresses with its DHCP server. Only the first router should have an ethernet plug in its WAN port and to link even more routers in sync with it, you will need to make a chain of routers, with their gateway setting changed to 'router' (without this option, this won't work), each with one client port connect to another in the next router in the chain.
      So if you have more than 2 routers in this configuration, there will be 2 used client ports beyond the 2nd router. These are used to link them altogether. They must all have different SSID names (network names), also.

  • @tausif304

    That what I was looking for, I will try it at my home and hopefully it will work. I have two questions though.
    1> I guess once I set it up I should be able to use second router as a network switch too, because I need to connect my network printer to it.
    2> Here you have created different network how can I setup another router so but it only shows one network name. suppose if I have 4 different rooms and if I do this was there will be 4 networks available, is there any way I can set it up all four routers that it will only show one network available. Like all 4 router only sharing one network signal?
    I hope I have cleared my self. Waiting to hear from you.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +tausif304 1. Yes, the other LAN ports on router 2 can be used.
      2. That is not possible. You should name them according to their location. They all will share the same WAN IP but they can't be made to have an array that will be one huge network. They have to be differently named networks.

    If I to connect a dvr to the linksys router, of course after doing the port forwarding on it. Will it work?

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      A DVR as in a DLNA device designed for network use, with an ethernet connection? Yes it will work if that is how it works. All devices will be viewable to all other devices on the 2+ router setup just as if it were one router.
      Port forwarding is not required for what you are doing. In fact, the DMZ setting is better than port forwarding BUT newer routers do everything so much better, port-forwarding is only a troubleshooting method now and you only have a slight chance to need to use the firewall-exempt setting, DMZ. It basically opens all ports (none of which are blocked, unless you have some blocked by default - for security) and has no firewall protection.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what you're asking. If you don't have an ethernet cable at the place you want a second wireless network then you will have to use another method such as an AC adapter that uses the electrical wiring in your house instead of an ethernet - but those are expensive and have the downside of packet loss and loss of bandwidth. I highly suggest an ethernet.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Unfortunately you need to connect your main router with an ethernet cord. You can't use a wireless bridge like some 'repeaters' because you're using a router. Even if you did somehow manage to repeat the wireless signal, it will be weak. Using a long ethernet cord will make it so like your main router is right where your old router is because there's almost no signal lost when you use an ethernet cord.

    Hey My friend recently gave me his old Linksys, which he's been using for a good while. He said all I need to do is just connect it as an extender and it should work fine in your home network once configured...
    I've tried to do the first few steps (plugged in the ethernet, connected to my desktop, disabled wifi, enabled LAN) but after It buffers, the connection displays as unidentified and holds the 'yellow-caution-indicator' over the icon in the desktop tray. Type in 192.168.1.1 in my Browser (IE & Chrome) and NOTHING.
    Is there something I'm doing wrong?
    Do I need to connect it to my original router FIRST(which is now downstairs in the living room) to establish some sort of link?
    I do not have the Setup CD that came with it, is this a requirement when configuring with my desktop?
    Any help is most appreciated!

    So the old/booster router still needs to be plugged into the current router, by T1? I was hoping for a boosted wireless option.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Boosted wireless" is useless in many situations. It will only be boosting a weak signal and the second device would show you better bars but at the cost of losing packets and bandwidth.
      Yes, the second router needs to be plugged in via an ethernet cable and NOT into the WAN port where you'd normally put the ethernet from a modem into - it must be in any of it's client ports. When you turn the option from gateway (default) to 'router' in the configuration menu of your router, it will then bleed the main router's ethernet signal over your second router and through all other ethernet ports (except WAN port from where a modem would be).

    Thanks for the great video. A couple questions:
    I have a wired network, the hub of which is my main router which is connected to my cable modem. So, I have Ethernet ports in other areas of my house that I can connect additional routers (to be used as wireless switches/range boosters). Is it the same process even though I have a hardwire connection from my main router to the new range boosting router?
    Also, because my main router is putting out a wireless signal/connection I will have two different SSID's. Will my devices automatically connect to the strongest one?

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeffery Chapman I'm not sure what you mean by "hardwire connection from my main router to the new range boosting router?". Are you talking about ethernet ports through your walls? If so, that would work as the router would be connected to the main router's DHCP table. It depends on the devices (connecting to the strongest one). Some phones will do it (My HTC One M7 does) while laptops usually have to be manually switched.

    • @jeffery672002
      @jeffery672002 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I have Ethernet wiring throughout my house. I have a closet with my cable modem connected to my main router (offering wifi and wired) connected to a switch with patch cables connecting ports on the switch to ports in a distribution panel that has the feeds that run throughout my house ...yes, through the walls. I live in a big house and the wifi from the main router is weak on the opposite side of the house so I am connecting a second wireless router to an Ethernet port with a cable in that area. I was trying to figure out how to set up the router. I think the main thing is to disable DHCP but I used most of the steps in your video (except the MTU I left on Auto). It is working fine but my original hope was to have a larger "single" wifi network - same SSID, same password, switching seamlessly from weaker to stronger signal as I move throughout the house. Is this even possible? The way I have it set up now it is 2 difference SSID's.
      IP's are all assigning fine, no conflict, because I disabled DHCP.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeffery Chapman You have to have 2 different SSIDs if they're they both have the same encryption (Wpa2,wpa, wpas and AES, etc) - if not, feel free to make the SSIDs the same but you may encouner some problems. Disabling DHCP shouldn't really help at all because you're using the other routers as 'routers' and not gateways, as they usually operate. They get an ip from the main router as well. and count as a device on the DCHP table.

    • @spaz3297
      @spaz3297 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeffery Chapman did u ever find the answer

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can use this method for basically as many times as you'd like. Just plug the ethernet from your wall into a client port (not the internet in port on the router, one you'd put a device into) and set the router's setting from gateway to router (or another similar setting for non-linksys routers). All of the routers will require a different SSID (appear as different networks with different names), so name them accordingly. My phone switches automatically sometimes but will occasionally make me have to just switch manually.

      I don't see why not. Make sure you have a surge protector for the COAX source. I am unfamiliar with this type of adapter but would recommend an AC-ethernet adapter because the MOCAs seem to be expensive.

    I'm at a dead end. As in the video, I went to the wireless tab and tried to change the security mode. It didn't let it happen. It wants to remain disabled. So, I decided to skip that and change the mode from gateway to router, and it won't let that happen either. As soon as I click router, it returns to gateway. What am I doing wrong???

    i have tp link wifi extender WA750RE. it was all good in the beggining and suddenly few weeks later i have noticed my internet speed has dropped in half. i have 20mbps but on devices connected on extender i can get maximum 10mbps. do you have any solution? thx!

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      First thing I'd try is to unplug your extender for 5 minutes and then try again. Computers need to be rebooted occasionally, and so do routers. Things aren't programmed perfect.
      If that has no effect than you could try changing the channel of your main router (usually on auto but you can usually change it to 1-11 for 2.4ghz bands; 5ghz channels are much higher in numbers [newer routers and newer devices can only use 5ghz bands]).
      If all else fails, a cheap Linksys WRT54G and a long ethernet cable (or an ac/ethernet adapter for using the wiring in your house [mind that this method will almost certainly degrade your signal] and following the video's instructions may ne cheaper than a replacement wireless repeater.
      Wireless repeaters only boost already degraded signals. If the reception for a device is bad for your repeater it will be bad for anything that it boosts and relays to.
      In short, wireless repeaters only boost already bad signals unless it already has good reception where it is at.

    Hey thanks for your tips, I learned something new on here. One question ? Every time there's a power outage the Router automatically changes to a different user name and password... • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stephen Cross It will be different. This video shows the Linksys routers but it shouldn't be that much of a difference. You should be able to find these settings by a different name, because these terms tend to be slightly different depending on which brand of router you have.
      Change the LAN IP of the second router to a different one than the main - 1st - router. This allows you to access the admin page from either network instead of having to connect to each one, manually, to get access to the admin/config pages.

      Yes, you will need both routers to always be connected via ethernet to each other.

    Hello I have an AT& T modem. I also have a Netgear router and a Blackberry Playbook. If I plug my router next to my AT&T Modem, will my Blackberry Playbook tablet pick up the access point? The Blackberry has trouble with live streaming.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +essentialeugene About your AT&T modem, if that has a wireless component to it, that shouldn't interfere with your Netgear router if you connect to the modem via ethernet (even with no wifi from the modem [if its a combo]) and change the router's settings from gateway to router (gateway is default). That would be the only way to use your Netgear router with your modem if the modem is a combo with wireless.

    • @essentialeugene
      @essentialeugene 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So if I plug the other end of my Ethernet cable from the Netgear router to the AT&T modem will that work?

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends on what the AT&T modem is. If its just a cable/DSL modem then it doesn't broadcast any wireless signals nor have any switches. There's kinds of modems that are called modem/router or modem/switch combos. If yours is either of the latter two, you could get this to work.

    • @essentialeugene
      @essentialeugene 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      My AT&T modem is a modem/router. I also have an old Netgear router.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +essentialeugene Then you'd plug your netgear router into a client port on the AT&T modem/router combo and see if there's the setting to change the netgear router from a gateway to 'router' (or a similar option: I only work with linksys routers).

    Do I need to assign my new access point a static IP address on the router? My access point works for the most part, but every now and then it's coming up with DNS errors that happen then go away.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If its a general access point and not a router it will probably function as another device on the main router's DHCP table. If true, yes: set its IP to static and out of range of the DHCP numbers (100-149 is the default range, so choose 151+ for the last octet) for linksys' last octet). Also, change its DNS to your main router's LAN IP (192 168 1 1 (with periods in between, youtube censors IP addresses) and secondary 8 8 8 8 (google open DNS, but you probably won't need it).
      If its a router, you should change its access IP to be out of range of the main router's DHCP table (192 168 1 151-199 etc) and that will allow you access both routers' admin pages from either network.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steven Sloan you need to set the default IP of the second router to another IP (192.168.1.159) for example. Anything not in the main router's DHCP table (last octet above the DHCP last octet limit) will work since this is LAN. You can then browse to either router configuration page from either network if you do this.
