Something else to take into consideration within your home, is the construction of the home. I have the Nighthawk X6 as well but, it doesn't reach the entire house. I've had to use 3 different access points to get signal. The X6 is located upstairs, in new construction homes this, in general, wouldn't be an issue. However, my house was built in the 1930s and still has nearly all of its original shiplap walls. Shiplap is horrible for wifi. I plan on hard wiring the entire house and adding 2 more X6 routers setup as access points for full coverage. Great overview of 'fixing' wifi.

My son lived in an apartment a while back and he had some neighbors next door that were always "Getting Busy" if you know what I mean. They were very loud at their activities. So he decided to change his SSID to "We can hear you having sex" lol... Now that was funny!

I solved my wifi issues by simply moving my router over about 4 ft.
~ The story... I was getting 50 mbs when I was in the living room (where the router was) but upstairs, I was getting 6 mbs, and in the basement I was getting 4 mbs. Even when I was directly above or below where the router was setting.
~ I moved the router upstairs (per your suggestions in this video) and got 50 mbs in every room upstairs... but only got 3 mbs in the living room, and 2 mbs in the basement. Weird.
~ I put the router back in the living room, but this time I sat the router in a spot about 4 ft from where I use to have it in the living room. Now, I'm getting full strength in every single room in the house! WOO HOOO! ~
"What was causing the slow issues?", you ask? Steel support beams. Yep. That's right. Steel. Beams. Those things apparently wreak havoc with wifi signals... and I have TWO of them in my new house. One in the floor between basement and 1st floor, and the other between 1st and 2nd floors (because of a loft area). I didn't not know we had two beams.
~ It ends up that when the router was originally in the living room, I had the router setting directly above one of the steel support beams. When I put the router upstairs, I had the router directly over the other steel beam. When I put the router back in the living room, I put it in a different space, which was 4 ft away from the steel beam. That was all it took to get my wifi speeds going full tilt in every room of the house.

Any metal beam or surface will interfere with your signal. That includes even mirrors. People don't know or forget that mirrors are something more than glass, and they reflect wifi signals as they reflect light.

Move to Chattanooga Tennessee. We have EPB Fiber Optics and the minimum speed is 300Mbps for $60/month and GIG 1000Mbps is only $10 more. Upload and download are same no matter what time of day it is because there is no congestion on the system because everyone has their own dedicated fiber feed direct from headend to home. LOVE IT!!!!

Steve, this is an excellent video. I couldn't have said it any better. I do tech support and get as least 2 calls per week asking for help with this topic, dropped internet connections. I have to explain these steps to users over and over. To your comment, I'd argue that the number of devices in your home is not as important as the number of other routers in your area (neighbors) that interfere with yours, that is the biggest issue, and thus "channel isolation" is the biggest fix. I've added this video to my collection of advice for my users. I've Thumbs up, Subscribed and now Commented. Its a triple-play!

If you are smart, you wire up the static devices in the house with Ethernet cables and leave wifi only for smart phones and netbooks. All TVs, media streaming devices should be plugged in by the ethernet cables. But I understand if are in a temporary situation and don't own the house or plan to stay long.

since you have the x6, enable the ‘smart’ feature of the router and it will load balance your 2.4 and your 2 5GHz band. where the slower devices are automatically put on the slower band. the 2 5GHz bands are also load balanced where if there are more than 3 devices on the first and none or 1-2 devices on the 2nd, the router automatically puts the device on the band with the lighter traffic. if you set them to connect to specific bands, you could end up with 5 devices on 1 5ghz band and none on the other and slow down your connection. my 2 cents.

Great video. Be glad you went with Android. Tried to find an app that would show me channel interference/congestion and I found this:
"There are no Wi-Fi scanners for iOS, as Apple had these removed from the App Store."
There are scanners that show connection speed in real time that are very useful. But Apple blocked all that show actual signal strength and interference.

    Hi Steve,
We have 6 people with 25 devices connected to the internet now main modem is not the best at all I found away that lessens the device congestion over all.
Now my bedroom is the actual garage where the internet WiFi signal is least strongest and the furtherest from the modem in our upstairs spare room.
Now I connected powerline Ethernet adapter kit to the main modem via Ethernet, then I used my old tp-link adsl2+ modem and disabled dsl setting that allows to use an isp,
From there I configured and in bridge mode and having as a router only and then ran a second Ethernet cable from the powerline adapter in my room to my modem which carries the internet signal
to my room in garage from I connected my desktop pc, my MacBook Air, my Xbox and nas to that using Ethernet cables with problems, then I configured the WiFi on my modem with new Sid’s on both bands 2.4ghz and the 5ghz for my iPad and iPhone with custom passwords creating my own network.
I had found out there was still congestion on the network with our tenant downstairs so I connected a WiFi extender and connected that to the main modem and creating there own network if fixed that issue for while then it’s started up all over again a 3rd time with my cousins gaming pc so I repeated the same process I did in my room minus the powerline adapter, I got another tp-link modem configured it all on bridge mode ran a 15m Ethernet cable from the main modem into the back that tp-link modem and ran Ethernet cables from the desktop and 2 ps4’s in to and configured WiFi network Ssid’s and it was all done.
Only the only running the main modems only supports 2.4ghz band is 3 apple computers, 1 tablet, 3 phones, 1 Apple TV and 2 smart TVs and all this is rarely used mainly 1 laptop, 1 tablet and 3 phones are used between 3 people and stopped all congestion on the home network, only time we have problems is when our isp here is doing upgrades on the network from there end other than that it’s sweet no problems at all and it took me about 5-15 mins to do it all with connections and configurations for each network devices with extenders and modems running off the main modem it was quick and easy.
I don’t need to adjust any settings for channels that’s self maintained, stopped all network congestion’s and every sing internet argument in our house hold!!!

Thank you for this information. I live in an old sandstone house and my "den" is in the basement where there is a very poor WiFi signal due to an internal stone wall. I have found the best and easiest option for me is to have a powerline system using the electrics of my house to transmit the signal. These were very easy to set up - plug and play and out of the box in minutes and I am not technically minded. I now have a reliable broadband connection.

I'm so glad Miss Understanding is cleared up now, I was worried about her ;) Seriously though, you didn't mention using a router for WiFi but the best thing anyone can do to improve their WiFi in 2014 or 2020 is to move the router or modem/router to the most central and highest location as possible. I have "solved' so many friends and families 'problems' suggesting that one tip. If you're not using a router I'm not sure there is much you can do aside from making sure your modem is at least capable to push through the data tier you pay for....good luck

The key to using a repeater properly is to install it at the point between the strong and medium signal (not low) Do not install a repeater in a low signal area. It needs to take that strong signal and enhance it further. I have an Asus RP-AC86U repeater. It rocks.

I don't trust the speedtest app on my phone. I pay for 250/100 through fiber and get around 270/110 on my PC (connected by CAT6 cable). However, I get around 350/110 on my phone on my 5GHz Wi-Fi which really doesn't make sense. Anyway, great video Steve. Best is a modem/router combo, no cable in between. If your equip is manufactured after 2009, on your 2.4 go into your router settings & set it to (n) only. If your equip is 2013 or later, set your 5 to (ac) only. This will especially increase your Firesticks download speed & use only the 5 for them. 1 other item, do not expect a 400 rated router to download at 600 mbps speed.

I just purchased an Asus 5300, after my Wi-Fi took a hit. I went from 240 Mbps down to 5 Mbps down over thanksgiving. I was using an Asus AC RT 87U which was 2 years old and always had problems in the 5 Ghz bands. When I finally got the Asus 5300, I did a 24 hour stress test. Which was streaming 8 streams of 4k for 24 hours. The day before although I pay for 200/20, I was getting 9/5 which TWC (Time Warner Cable) could not explain. With the new router I was able to get 270/27 and streamed 1 terabytes of Data within 24 hours with no problems.

You are correct that the higher the router, the better the coverage will be. But it is not because they broadcast down better than up. There are fewer things in the upper half of any room than in the lower half. SO, the signal has less to get past when it is higher. The floor would be the worst place for a router and an electrical outlet near the floor is almost as bad. I have an extender that was designed to just sit on the electrical outlet on an extension cord and placed it on a nearby window sill. It is twice as high there and works much better. Another thing is the exact placement can help. In the GHz frequency band, inches and even fractions of an inch can make a difference.

Actually you'll find that the 2.4Ghz is faster then the 5Ghz is for better resolution for 4K HiDef Streaming but can be actually slower if you are streaming to a none 4K screen, so then the 2.4 should be faster.
There is another trick I learned about WiFi routers: Instead of using passwords for looking strangers out which slows down your reception because it checks password availability for each block of data first and then sends it which takes time, so instead of using password you can use MAC Address that every device have and is easy to find in settings ( you'll find 2 MAC Addresses, one for Bluetooth and one for WiFi which is the one you want ), any way instead of using passwords you use Allow Only This MAC addresses which yes you have to enter each devices own MAC Address but it's worth it, when you search for WiFi signal you'll see yours without a lock logo but nobody will be able to connect unless you added their MAC Address which is kind of cool because if you did connecting without a password is nice and because your router is like mine you can add a guest account which on that one you use a password.
I'm not sure if I was understandable but I hope you'll get it.
Also about the channels ( usually there are 12 ) I would try one by one no matter how much traffic you see because it's not always the traffic which messes things out, sometimes it's some signal from a neighbor garage door or cordless phone ( whatever it is ) which messes with your signal and there is no traffic or great signal showing, that's why trying all channels one at a time is the best and even then it's not always perfect because time of the day or which day it is also effect things, even satellites passing over.
I have seen what you would call the perfect router it comes with 3,5 or 7 parts and those parts are not repeaters if you unplug one the whole system stop working, what it really does is actually makes the whole house a router, it's amazing but you'll have to pay over $1,000 for the 2 piece and close to $2,000 for the 7 pieces or something close to those prices because it's a new invention which I've seen in a new gadgets conversion show.
And by the way right now my WiFi Speed is up to 76Mgs/62Mgs that's because here we got ADSL Connection not DSL, the A means Asymmetrical which changes all the time depending on what you are doing, in fact one Suplier just laid fiber optics in my city which guarantees 200Mgs up and down for the price I'm paying now using copper wires offering 100Mgs but copper can't move data that fast and the only reason I'm getting the great speed that I do is because I'm not far from one of their transmitting stations ( like a mile away ) my mom got the same service exactly as mine and she only gets up to 40Mgs because she lives 5 miles away from me which is 6 from the transmitter station and old copper wires, fiber optics is the way to go or satellites which is way to expensive.
    Sorry I started mumble.

      You are wrong.
The primary differences between the two frequencies are the range (coverage) and bandwidth (speed) that the bands provide. The 2.4 GHz band provides coverage at a longer range but transmits data at slower speeds. The 5 GHz band provides less coverage but transmits data at faster speeds.

@odedo1 Mac filtering, which is what you have described above, doesn't work. A simple Wifi Analyzer app can sniff out wifi signals and display the mac numbers. Then you can easily spoof the mac number and get it. Worst of all, without a password protecting your router, once the mac number has been spoofed, anyone can get into the administration webpage of the router. 😨

First, I know this video is old, so it may not be important to bring this up. Just a small heads up, the Apple airport does have a 5G network. I own an original Airport Extreme and it works really well even today and on 5G. Right where you select the channel, on the drop-down above where it has 802.11.n and so on, you can select 5G only. Oh and great video 👍

Hi all, I'll help out some of you. (I'm pretty experienced in this topic, networking and computer engineering)
For one, you can unplug your router/modem. This will clear out all cached data and protocols. Including emptying out the ram in the device and free up space where the modem/router gives out IPs to every device that's connected to your wifi.
Next, go into your router's settings, try mess around with the network settings such as reserve bandwidth for a device if you have many on your home network.
Third, There are too many phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, echo dots; etc, on your network. Try to remove some people in your mengement settings of your router. If you can't than just change your password, this will kick everybody off and it'll force you to put in a password.
Fourth, Use a network cable. This will remove the radio signela. You'll get faster speeds as it doesn't have to retrieve data in air. and plus you don't have to enter in a password to enter in the network.
**Now there is some other things but i'm just too lazy rn, just reply to this comment and hopefully I won't be lazy then.**

why can I only get up to 100mbps on 2.4? I get 235 (im paying for 200 from my isp) on 5g and wired. 2.4 uses 802.11n. Is this wifi mode capped at 100? Also, im using the dlink ac2600 and the theoretical max 2.4 speed is 800mbps with this router.

Another solution to the problem: Just reset your router once/day (unplug power and replug back after 15 seconds). This can be very easily automatically done by plugging router in a timer to go "off" and come back "on" within minutes. Best time to do is in middle of night when all are asleep. I have done this and it works.

I took the opportunity to run CAT5 cable around the house when we were doing a basement renovation. It's all routed back to a utility closet in the basement. That covers Apple TV, two consoles and my son's laptop who swears a wired connection gives him a better ping rate ( mainly because he's in a WiFi dead zone ). Thanks for the tip - I'll try the router upstairs. I would have thought the signal was omnidirectional? I wonder if there is some kind of interference with the ground? Dear Mr. Steve,
Please answer below question, this is regarding 2nd router(as a
    extender) and cable internet..
    1. if i connect 2nd router from Main router, the wifi speed of Main
router will slow? or reducing the speed?
2.I connect 2nd router from Main router and i put internet cable to
laptop through 2nd router.. the wifi speed signal of Main router will
make it slow? or decreasing the wifi speed signal?
    3. Is the cable(wire) can stable the internet connection? without
affecting the Main router wifi speed signal?
you're answer will be a great help to maximize my existing internet
    connection.

Please don't be misleading! Your internet connection speed (line speed) is measured through your router. If you test your connection on your device, you're ONLY seeing the speed THAT device receives. Therefore, you must log into your router to see what the true internet speed is. Then, testing your WiFi or Ethernet connection speed will show the difference. For example, you may have a line speed of 70 Mbps to your router and a WiFi speed of 8 Mbps, and doing a speed test would make you think your internet is slow. Before you rage to you ISP - check the line speed to the router. If that speed is above the minimum speed you have been sold as part of your package, then your issue is WiFi related and you may troubleshoot further. Otherwise, you need to speak with your ISP to get the fault corrected.

We have okay internet in the house but very little/none mostly in our garage which isn't that far from the house. We invested in a very expensive new router (DLink 3200), all the bells and whistles, HD even, hoping to sort this issue out. But we still have none in our garage! Is it a case of the router needing to be set up and tweaked or do we STILL need an extender of some kind. I thought the grunty new router would instantly solve this issue!

I'm passing on a warning: Netgear Nighthawk router blocks KODI streaming media app data. I just bought the AX12 model. It is set up correctly as far as I know because all other internet apps work great. But KODI streams will not play at all; they won't even load after the main app is running. I connected to my second router in my home and KODI works just fine. I tried this with a 2018 Windows 10 PC and a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 smartphone. I've never had an issue playing KODI on either machine, but both stop streaming KODI addon channels as soon as I connect to the AX12 router.
