    For a lot of default passwords...
    And
    192-168-1-1ip.mobi/default-router-passwords-list
    For default IP and also login info.
    Otherwise, just google the manufacturer and model number for your router.
    ------------------------
    Please note that this won't work for all routers. It will work on most Linksys routers, I imagine. The one shown is a WRT54G hardware revision v2.
    It IS possible to use an AC adapter for Ethernet that uses the electrical system in your house instead of a long Ethernet cable. They are costly, though, and usually cause signal degradation, packet loss and high ping - in Layman's terms, you should use a long Ethernet cable.
    This video will show you how to use your older wireless router in conjunction with your new router (via a long ethernet cord to another part of your house) to boost your network's wireless signal throughout your house. Note: You will have to end up with 2 different wireless networks BUT they are both on the same internet network for you to use for internet access. You will need to connect them via a long Ethernet cable from a client port on the first one to a client port on the second router. The 2nd router's DHCP server will need to be turned off as the first router will be assigning local IP addresses and the second router MUST have the option to change from "gateway" to "router", or a similar option, for this to work. On a standard linksys admin or configuration page, it is under "advanced routing".

    Tip: When using your computer to watch this video (via wifi) while programming the secondary router (connected via ethernet cable to your computer), you will need to *first* change the local IP address of the secondary router as described at 8:14 If you don't change the local IP of the secondary router first, 192.168.1.1 only connect to your primary router. To change the IP of the secondary, disable internet to your computer, access the secondary router via ethernet cable by going to 192.168.1.1, login and change the local IP address as described at 8:14 . Then reconnect computer to internet and you can access the secondary router (at the new local IP) while watching the video via wifi from your primary router. Another option is to simply watch the video on your phone while completing each step. In any case, THANK YOU chiefjoboo for this amazingly helpful video!

    For anyone wondering, some Newer and more high-end routers now support wirelessly repeating a router's signal. Well worth checking if your router does and how well it works before spending the money on a long Cat5e/Cat6 cable

    WOW! This really worked! And practically nothing about reconfiguring anything ever works for me! I even used a non-typical router (an old Bell Canada one I bought at Value Village for $5.99 because they had nothing else), and it still worked! No more holding my laptop up in the air like showing off the new Lion King! One HUGE *THANK YOU!* :)

    EXCELLENT video, I have this exact extra router, I'll be doing this. My Wireless is weak in my Basement, Son complains he gets kicked off-line playing games etc. The only issue I may encounter is, running an ethernet cable from my basement to my main router in the office on the main level. Basement is developed, BUT, Challenge accepted. Again awesome.

    Hey it worked. Took a old linksys bef type and I wanted to have internet to the Android pod in my shop about 150 feet away so went through the steps although not all that matched up but your definitions were clear enough. Didn't do the WAP setting as all my had was wep. People might steal it but won't have it hooked up enough so figure their give up with the intermittent operation, although I did have to use the old password to log on so maybe it's ok. Either way got full strength in the shop. So thanks for the posting. The drop- outs were annoying with just the one motorola modem which was supposed to have 300 ft. Yes back to music and podcast, and all the great stuff while I work.

    This tutorial was very helpful. I happened to have the same Linksys router as my back-up, so things were clear. My only "problem" is that I can't access the admin panel for the 2nd router (i.e., the Linksys - 192.168.1.152) when I'm done. I get the message: "This site can’t be reached. 192.168.1.152 took too long to respond." I can access the Internet from multiple devices, so it's a minor inconvenience if I don't plan to make any adjustments, but I don't know why it wouldn't work. BTW,. I can access the master router's admin page with 192.168.0.1. I tried 192.168.0.152 for the second router, but that times out, also. Regardless, thanks for putting this updated video together.

      It's probably got a different ip address. try 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.245. Once you're logged onto it you can change it to whatever static ip address you want (just make sure it's unique and not the same as your primary router)

    The secondary router is and can be accessed as per normal for Web Admin via CAT 5 Cable, you can set it to be WiFi Admin's but as you point out that is NOT a smart move unless you know you have good security. As for network IP's you can have the entire Network in the same range whether it be 192.168.*.* or 10.0.*.* . . I was made aware recently that you can run Class A and Class B in the same internal network but I have not investigated as yet , seems like a LOT of work for little gain.
    My Network has several Devices that are static in their IP's and a section assigned for Automatic such as Phones, Tablet's and Laptops that come and go which are assigned Dynamic IP's handled by the Modem/Router and by allowing the secondary to pass ALL DHCP through is prudent .
    Depending on the WRT54G you have flash this sucker with DD-WRT firmware and really liberate the Router ( it can be set up as DHCP Forwarder from the Gateway
    DD-WRT Web Site has all the how to's and versions that are capable . I have 4 now , they are IMHO the BEST Unit's you can disable the WAN port and assign it as a LAN port so have it as an uplink and still have 4 Wired ports and AP for WiFi Devices .

    This is fine if your two routers can be accessed at the same time on the PC ie they have different IP addresses. You need the same first three groups to be the same, such as 192.168.1.X but different values for X
    If you have two routers with the same X value, you have to connect them one at a time and change one of them to a different IP address.

    I see a lot of people were able to make this work simply but I have missed something. Or the fact that my main wireless router (which connects to the web just fine) is connected to a static network. I can see and connect to my second router following your GREAT video, but I cannot get to the web through the second router. )-:

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without knowing more about your static network, I assume you mean your WAN address is static. In that case you may have to make sure the DHCP server is turned off on the second router and your devices will be getting an IP address assigned by the first router's DHCP server. If you have 2 DHCP servers enabled in a series this will not work for the second router, but the first one will work. Also, the second router must support "router" mode instead of "gateway" mode. It may be called different things on other brands of routers. If you can't change it to router mode you can't use the second router as shown in the video. Some routers just don't support it.

    Thank you for sharing your expertise. Your instructions were followed exactly and I can wirelessly access the Internet. But for the life of me I cannot connect back into the old Linksys WRT54GS. I have reset the old Linksys a few times trying different IP addresses to include; 192.168.1.152, 192.168.1.250, and 192.168.1.149 all with the same result - I can't get back into the old router using any of the IP addresses. On the main Linksys, WRT1900AC, I ran a Device Status Address. The IPv4 address all use 192.168.0.xxx. The old router is connected to the main router via a client port - not the LAN port. Like I said, your instructions work and I thank you for that. If you have any suggestions on how to access the old router setup/configuration it would be appreciated.

      Bill Gardner i am no expert at this myself! but i believe you hookup your computer/laptop to your old router Via Ethernet Cable to one of the client ports.. Then, go on your computer to your Network Settings, Turn Off/Disable the WiFi on your computer leaving your old router the only thing connected to your computer Via hard wire.. Then, right next to where you disabled the wifi on your computer it should also show you the status of your Ethernet, click and/or Right click on it and i believe go to properties and it should show you the exact IP Address your "Old Router" is running on at that moment! now im not sure if you can put that IP add. right into your internet browser search bar as you are, or if you need to hook backup to your wifi and then do it. Hopefully this works for you, like i said "im no expert AT ALL" let me know if this works for you. Thanks!

    Every thing worked for me, up until I unplugged the ethernet cable from my computer to the router, When I plugged it into the other router, everything I did seems to not be set.
    I changed the router to Linksys Bridge as its SSID, and added a password. Once I plugged the router into the other router, it comes up as Linksys for it's SSID, and it's not password protected.
    The only thing I didn't do, was change the MTU setting, following you step by step...
    I'm using a WRT54GL.

    Thanks for the video, awesome! So, can you connect the repeater router the the main router via wifi? Pretty sure you said you can't but just clarifying. It'll be tough for me to run cat5 cable to the repeater location.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +clickdrawing this tutorial is not using repeaters - it's using routers to be better than repeaters can be. You will only boost a weak signal with wireless repeaters and that doesn't improve the signal at all. Routers can not accept a wireless signal and relay it like a repeater can. At least none that I've seen.
      If you can't run a long CAT5 cable to the second router you can try an AC/Ethernet adapter kit l, although expensive and possibly signal degrading, it's probably better than cheap repeaters.

    This worked wonderfully but I was just wondering if you could explain why the network can't be the same. What issues does that cause? I feel like now I have to switch between networks within my own home and I know plenty of networks (hospitals, colleges, etc) that have one network over a wide area. That's what I was hoping to do here, but I have two networks instead. Don't get me wrong, this works really well. I'm just curious why this is how you chose to set it up. Thanks again so much!

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The one network you mentioned for one wide area either uses one really good router or uses repeaters that all return to the same router and, technically speaking, the router doesn't know there are repeaters there - it only knows it has one or two more items to assign addresses with via DHCP. If you have two routers doing this you have the first router knowing there is another router there, and thus it can't have the same SSID (name of wireless network) or you will have major issues connecting to one if the other is in range - this is because of basic internet functions: 1) This computer wants to go to here. 2) The website says here's the data. 3) The computer accepts the data. 4) Repeat ; Now all these steps have a local (LAN) and world (WAN) IP address on their networks and the router assigns the LAN IP and the modem assigns the WAN IP from your ISP (internet service provider). If you have two routers with the same SSID (network name), either you will be constantly dropping and connecting and it will be unusable or you won't connect at all and this is because you are trying to connect to two routers at the same time and it's going in an endless loop over and over because your PC can't have 2 LAN IP addresses and the first router can't give out 2 LAN IP addresses to one device. The way repeaters get around this - and how they are different than this method of using a router in this configuration - is that they don't technically tell the router that they are connecting to that they are in between the router and another device, they only take the wireless traffic at the strength it receives it at (this is why this tutorial is better, as it doesn't lose strength due to wireless strength loss/packet loss/latency), and broadcasts it again so that other devices see a "stronger" connection - well in fact it has a strong connection to that repeater, the real strength is only how strong the connection is to the that router to that repeater (or to the first repeater if you have an array of them) thus you can technically see full bars on a repeater's network and get horrible lag and less bandwidth than if you used a router like this with Ethernet. Yes, you have to move between networks as you move around the area but it's worth it.

    I have the exact same router. Followed the video exactly. The router acts as a hub and an extender. That is all devices plugged into it work, but to get wireless from it you have to log on the device you want to use. I have a speed app on my smart phone. Once I added the extended router to my phone to automatically connect, each time I go near a particular router it connects and the speed app works for that router. The speed on the old added router is about 20% slower than my new router which is a dual band. The old one has only 2.4 GHz. Would this be the reason for the slower speeds?

    Great Video! I have an issue with my attempt to make my old router into a access point/range booster. When I get to the point where I click "advanced routing" I do not have a choice of gateway or routing. There is nothing that says operating mode. Mine says NAT enable or disable and below it says Dynamic Routing (RIP) enable or disable. Be default the NAT is enabled and the TIP is disabled. Below NAT and RIP is Static Routing with Route Entries, Enter Route Name, Destination LAP IP, Subnet Mask, Gateway, Interface ......this last choice has a box with a drop down menu ... choices are LAN & Wireless or Internet (WAN). I have no idea what to do and my research has not discovered an answer. The router I am using is a Linksys WRT300N V1.1. I did all the steps and it works great! I have the exact same router. I changed the IP address as well but I have a problem. I can't log back into the router. I tried by using the IP address that I changed it to. I even looked up the IP address from a device (It was different) and tried those addresses but I can not log into the router. I want to update the router name but I can't get back in. Can you help me? Any ideas? Thanks

    Hola, I just watched your video and what is unclear for me is do you must connect via wired to the main router when you want to set it up like an access point and/or bridge? What I would like to do is to setup my Linksys AC wireless router as access point or bridge repeating the main router signal through out the rest of the house. Can it work this way?

  • @padutchbuilders
    @padutchbuilders 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello, Thanks for getting back to me. I had connected it to the internet and tried to access it with the IP address I changed it to. It would not come up under the new IP address. Even when I check tot see what address it has it seems to be changing IP addresses or has more than one for some reason. How do I find the correct address to access it now? Your message really didn't answer my question. Looks like your very good at detailed description on video but I think you need to work on communication with others. Thanks

    How do you get your android phone to switch over automatically? I can be connected to the living room and then when I go to my office the signal from the living room is "poor" but the phone doesn't switch to the office router where the signal is "excellent" unless I manually switch it over. The 2 routers have different SSID and are on different channels.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience this sometimes happens automatically but usually I have to manually switch. It's not hard, but it can be annoying. Just drag down from the top of the screen and hold the wifi icon for a second and then click your other network. This can't be done automatically all the time, unfortunately.

      So that other devices can't get assigned to that IP address if it's within the DHCP table (100-149 by default).

    Will this work if i have a tp link router, and use my Linksys wrt 1900acs as a wifi extender? now since TP Link and Linksys have two different ip address, I dont have to change the ip address to sign in, correct? I just picked up the new TP Link AX6000 and want to use my linksys as a wifi extender, since I have so many devices even outside of the house, like Ring and Wyze Cameras and would love to improve connections from those Cameras. Don't get me wrong the TP link AX6000 is doing a good job now, but I think with an extender it could be a whole lot better connection for my outside devices. Will 5ghZ work on my Linksys? Thanks for you reply.

      You may be able to do that with wireless "mesh" compatible devices but this video is meant to be how to reuse an old router as an extension to your current wireless network. With older routers the best you're going to get is wired like this.

    Hmm, wha5 do you do if your router and the one that you plan on using as an AC have the same login page 192.168.1.1? Because that seems to be the case with my Asus and my Linksys. Not sure what to do.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will need to rest the second router to factory defaults, connect via ethernet, set it up again BUT change the login/default IP to something like 192.168.1.140 or something higher on the DHCP server of the first router. That way you can access both routers' admin pages with this setup.

    What happens if you make your secondary (older) router have the same SSID NAME with the same password? Wouldn't it just extend the range of the primary router so that you could roam around your house?

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'd either see two SSIDs with the same name or one and if you try to connect to it - even with the same password - you'd get all sorts of problems like dividing by 0 and infinite loops. You probably couldn't even load the 403 error page from either router.

  • @jameswarner5878
    @jameswarner5878 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    No matter what I do, I cannot access the page for 192.168.1.1
    I made sure that was the correct numbers my router uses, and they are. they are both Linksys Cisco routers.

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have both routers set to 192.168.1.1 then you can't connect to either. You need to change the secondary router's login IP to something like 192.1681.149 so that you can access it separately.

    thanks so much for this, i was trying to cascade my wan and i was getting so frustrated but this seens to work better. Im using a cisco e2500v1 router the only difference between this ones linksys page you set up is under advanced routing there is no option to change the gateway/router im using 2.0 firmware. My only concern is my comcast router uses 10.0.0.1 as an access ip and my linksys uses 192.168.1.1 and they both work when the internet is plugged into the wlan port. however, when i plug the lan wire into the port instead i can no longer access the router itself, i can only access the comcast modem. Why would that be if they are different numbers?

    • @swandivemedia9249
      @swandivemedia9249 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      this is apparently a firmware bug that affects e2500 routers since atleast 2014, the router works as intended but once you disable DCHP the main page will not allow you to make any more changes. but atleast it still works aslong as i dont need to edit anything

    • @chiefjoboo
      @chiefjoboo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You may need to reconnect to it on your phone or make sure that only the first router has DHCP enabled and the second one is disabled and is acting as a router and not a gateway. You should be able to connect to either network if this is done properly and your routers can do these settings - note that all routers can not do this feature of changing from gateway mode (default) to router mode.
      Make sure that the ethernet cable in the second router - from the first router - is NOT where you'd put it from a modem and that it's in a port where you'd plug in a device like a computer or something.

    • @chiefjoboo

      The secondary router is acting basically like a switch for ethernet and wifi. It's only passing data through to the main router and back again to other devices. Turning the option from gateway to router makes this so.

    • @chiefjoboo

      It will only help if your problem is connection strength, if your console is too far away from the first router. Actually, using a cheap router like this, the WRT54G has a max transfer speed of 54Mb/s which may be slower than your main router, if it supports better bands than G, like N, AC, AX, etc.
