I love this. "The Civic is a good rallycross car!" *shows videos of Civics not rallycrossing, then doing it really poorly, then wrecking.*

I agree as some clips don't seem like parts of official rallycross races and more of people mucking (yes I really mean mucking ) around in their cars.

golf on a budget? its wayy to heavy to make it worth buying as a cheap rally car.. maybe 1.8 turbo or a vr6... but those are quite complicated engines and parts can be tricky, you want your car to be reliable, you need to be able to find part anywhere... for fwd group I would choose civic or any small light car with small engine, because cheap, aftermarket, easy to work aswell, and you want to able to work on your car, rwd probably a bmw 3 series, also really cheap, engines are bulletproof, not a bad aftermarket aswell, it . ofc sierra is cool and I love them, but they are kinda rare now, so getting parts might be tricky Im not sure, and 4wd ofc a subbie.
but basically when you on a budget you shouldnt really look for something specific, just get the cheapest crap you can find and make it ready, you dont really need that much to start on the most basic rallycross or any other sport, just fix it up, gut the interior, get some good enough tires, helmet and some simple safety gear and you pretty much ready to go.

Why has no one raced trucks in rally races? I haven't seen any trucks in rally races. It's either sedans or hatchbacks or coupes. No one is racing old trucks with stock engines. I mean trucks before 2000 where the horsepower was stull relatively under 300 without a turbo or supercharger despite having 8 cylinders or eve the 4 cylinder Japanese imports.

Shitty facts man. We got the st165 and st185 alltrac celica's, which were the same thing as the GT-Four celica's. Same 3s-gte and AWD. The Volvo 240 is powered by an inline four, not a v6.
Besides this, good luck finding any Merkur XR4Ti's. In this price point regardless, you can get some beat up WRX's for 4-5k.
The GVR4 and 1G/2G DSM would like to have a talk with you as well.

This has been mentioned in the comments, but I feel like I should expound a bit on the Celica:
The ones in the clips in this video are all WRC-prepped Celica GT-Fours, mostly ST185s('90-'93) but a couple of ST165 clips('88-'89). Both the ST165 and ST185 were sold in the US under the Turbo All-Trac moniker, but with only around 2,500 ST165s and 1,700 ST185s sold here they are VERY rare and hard to find. Only around 10,100 ST165s and 26,000 ST185s were made worldwide, with a variant based on the sixth-generation Celica platform(the ST205) ending the line at about 12,000 produced. While buried in history the GT-Four was quite successful; taking four WRC drivers championships(1990, 1992, 1993, and 1994). Toyota suspended its rally program after the infamous cheating fiasco in 1995, though they have recently started back up using the Yaris platform.
While the All-trac/GT-Four is a natural choice for rallycross as they're essentially a WRC homologation car the rarity, complexity and difficulty in finding parts makes it an expensive, daunting prospect. The ST185 shares the same second-generation 3SGTE as the MR2 Turbo(and its aftermarket), however the ST165's first-gen 3SGTE is bespoke to it and is nearly impossible to find parts for. Prices can vary; I've seen basketcase project ST165s go for as little as $1,000 and well-sorted, modified ST185s go for upwards of $10,000. ST205s will start becoming importable next year(2019), with Canadian-landed JDM imports running around $5,000 CAD for a runner that needs work. Those prices will likely rise once they start becoming import legal.
That said, if those who run this channel want to check one of these cars out, I've got a sub-50K, stockish ST165 I'm more than willing to break out and show off. Just bear in mind I'm keeping it off the rallycross courses. :)

I totally agree with 7 in the FWD category. The Celica is an amazing and legendary Rally vehicle. I’ll definitely try getting one and customizing it to be completely safe on the track, like adding racing seats and a roll cage. Maybe even some Rally bumper lights.

B23E with the 138hp, was the one to have. With the exhaust kit and a cam alone, it spanked the stock 155hp B21 turbo big time. Volvo had over-the-counter street legal turbo kit for the B23E, to take it much much further.
In sweden there were/are tons of hopup parts. 280-360hp without turbo, more with. Chassis kits, thicker sway bars, bilstein dampers, short ratio steering, body kits, gauge clusters, headers+free flow exhausts, loads of camshafts and engine hopups, limited slips and more, directly from half inch thick volvo R-sport catalogue, all street legal. Now the 242, 2 door body, is the one to have, discountinued in 1983. Lastly, to twist your brains, there was also a street legal 282. Thats right, smallblock chevy conversion kit, WITH street legal documentation, directly from volvo, less engine.
You have never really driven a volvo until you try it fully hopped up with the "R" camshaft. 3500 rpm minimum to get going, 5000rpm reccomended. Then floor it, pull hard to 7000+.
260 was the six cylinders, 240's 4 cylinders. Except obscure canadian diesel6, which was called a 240.

  • @chancewhittle6534

Couple of things to note on your video, you claim in the opening about chassis being key to rally, but list the car's by drive type. The choices are good, pretty solid actually, however, it might work better if you listed the cars with special editions ie. The Celica alltrac, which is the us version of the GT four, the Civic wagon awd, the talon/eclipse tsi/gsx, as part of the chassis classification. The one car I disagree on is the mighty max, they're just super rare, so finding one is difficult. I'd say look for a 300zx or early supra also in rwd, or even a fox chassis mustang for the murican folks. One other thing feature less videos of the cars just driving like 30sec max per car. It shortens the video length and helps draw focus to the list and not just to the car videos.

and a lot of different injections or carburetor and a 2,3 turbo version.
The v6 engine is in the Volvo 260 model at least in Sweden 🇸🇪.

Appreciate the time you spent making the video, however, I would appreciate it more if you would have taken the time to do more research... If you're aiming this video to the people who are new to rally, beginners, or people who want to get into the sport then you need to make sure you're giving them the best and most accurate information possible. This video contains lots of misinformation that could lead a rally/rallycross new comer to miss out on the opportunity to find a great starter platform.

As I rally cross myself I highly do not recommend sr20s as much as other engines. I use a Nissan pulsar n15 (almera Aussie addition) and it is a 1.6 ga16 engine. As the sr20s have more horsepower the ga16 revs harder. Another reason is that you can abuse the ga16 so much and not hurt anything and it generally lasts longer than the sr20 meaning less part changes meaning less money. You may aswell buy a more expensive car with a better engine than buying a cheap one with a crappy. I highly suggest finding the car in your budget then finding parts for not just the engine but the car itself.

    • @mickb1470

I second this. The w201 was actually developed for WRC by Mercedes (with a turbo 4cyl making 300bhp), until Audi entered their Quattro and Mercedes shat themselves, instead going to DTM. So it’s got a beautiful 5 link rear end that puts done power extremely well, a stupid stiff chassis with low drag and ahead-of-time aero, etc. find a manual trans one (or swap in another box with adaptor plate) and you have a killer car. Might not make tons of power, but you can be sure all 100kw are going into the ground. Also, 4cyl cars handle much better than 6cyl. They are so much fun to rally, and I wouldn’t consider stopping soon!

      Nope...Though I do have a old 88 Chev van with a 6.2 diesel...and a Muncie M89 manual box....So no Chev or Doodge fan..
Nope driven European Ford powered things since I got my first one way back in October 1973..a MkI Ford Transit, LHD but English built with the English "Essex V4"...
As to the subject of this silly video...the US style of cone dodging on grass is done so simplicticly and slowly that it doesn't matter what vehicle..Hell motorhomes, pick ups, Bro Trucks, ANYTHING is fine for driving 25-30 mph..
Rally however is a different story..shortest time wins, so quickness is the name of the game..
So I an a "fan" of cars which are basically well balance, simple to work on and which it is easy to get shorter ring and pinion sets easier for 140-195 bucks.. I push hard 240 Volvo and Ford Sieera which in the US were called "Mare-KOOOoooor" (not sure on how many Os but a lot)
Both are well proven chassi with good balance, engines which are big enough, can easily swap out diff for the XR4Ti to use a Supra MkIII diff, and the Volvos get a 4-runner solid 8" unit..
Both work good enough for numerous wins all over the place for the last 30 years..
Ought to be good enough for guys out for a Sunday drive down a Special Stage..
Why would you think such a weird thing?

    Saab 9-3

RWD you missed a ton of good potential:

    Nissan S12
Datsun 280ZX (2+2 go for dirt cheap)

    Galant VR-4
    Subaru Legacy
    Subaru Outback
    Celica Alltrac
    Camry Alltrac
    Trecel Alltrac

Nice video..BUT! What's needed and what's wanted are 2 separte things, and what is needed in so called "rally-cross" ..."only in America" and for stage rally are vastly different duse to the vastly different venues... In short course low speed "grass-o-cross" light weight and nimbleness is king..Shorter, lighter, anything is fine...Sure more power is more fun but its not needed and not decisive....
In rally in North America virtually every stage is from medium fast to REALY Oh Mah Gawd fast.....quickness is king.. 95% of what you do is run the car repeatedly from 25 mph up about 85mph again and again...and occasionally up to 'whatever you dare before chickening out'.... STABILITY becomes important...and the 2 excellent cars shown in the short RWD thing shine..Both are mostly found with inline 4 2300 SOHC engines (sharing not only the same 96mm bore and 80mm stroke, but even the same head bolt spacing, more or less same valve sizes, same clutch size, similar weights, within an ich and a fraction of same wheelbase, often damn near same turbocharger if they're turbo and a pile of other things same)(yeah there were some V6 Volvos but not many and NO ADVANTAGE so forget those..And note the Merkur XR4Ti is the US version of the Ford XR4i--which came with the same Cologne built 2800 V6 as similar year Rangers and stuff here..) both of which are very simple engines, both very durable (as in you don't have the budget to kill them) and are both among the most rewarding engines around in terms of dollar spent to performance returns...Both can be rallied just by throwning suspension and a shorter final drive in the back axle and a guy can have LOTS of fun...but more importantly a guy can EASILY progressively upgrade major parts like gearbox and diffs or even whole axles junkyard cheap..and that is something you can never do with any of the popular FWD or AWD cars>
Contrary to comments, there are plenty of both cars nation wide and we have the best Interstate highway system in the world so if you want you find a rust free West Coast car and (shock!) you can go get it..No Passport controls (yet), cheap gas..Sounds like a road trip! And decent ones to begin a project can be found in some places for FREE or as little as $400 if you look.
Other note..yeah as people have pointed out ST165 and ST185 Touiletta All-Craps were sold here but those are VERY expensive and HUGE problems for parts and hellacious to work on and heavier than shit....
When it comes down to it the fact that 240 Volvo was made for 18 years and they made 2.3 million and imported about 70% kinda tips the balance towards those as what I think should be the "default option" beginner car but one you can keep (the same model) for years as you get better...But plenty of Xratties still around..
And that is the oafish-al nick name not "tee Eye" but like formerly ratty or "ex" ratty cause so mnay were orphans and abandoned and that 4 looks like an A from more than 5 feet.
Both those, nothing returns more fun and competitiveness for the dollar spent overall.
(full disclosure yeah I build both and manufacture or import parts for both..and as far as i know have supplied lots of parts for every Xratty or Volvo running in North America..)

I'd like to advocate here for the Mk4 Jetta and New Beetle. They're based on the same platform as the Golf, so anything performance-wise you can do with a Golf, you can do with the Jetta or New Beetle, and if you live in Europe, AWD Jettas (called Boras) were produced.
Additionally, in the RWD segment the original Beetle could be a viable option if you're not looking to go fast and just want to have some fun. They're lightweight, cheap, simple and have lots of off-road pedigree, just don't crash. :P

  • @jmc0369
    @jmc0369 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Funny to see how much a ruckus the statement that the Volvo 240 came with a v6 caused. The car was made for 18 years (75-93)and had mostly 4 cylinders from 2.0-2.3 liters and 2 versions of the PRV v6 of which those made before 88 were total shit. The later model resolved oiling issues and had a different oiling system. The Deloreans share a version of this motor and people hodgepodge the various versions together to make a very nice v6. Turbo'd the late PRV V6 is insane. Just look on craigslist right now and you will be hard pressed to find a v6 2 series. Oh, and an inline 6 Volkswagon diesel version exists. Not PRV's and diesels are not common at all and most are in the junkyards.

What about the focus SVT from the early 2000’s for FWD, it had a bullet proof 6 speed manual and 4 banger engine making 150-175 hp out of the box and that was NA, had upgraded suspension and brakes, as well was roomy, and yet could be made to be really low weight, just sayin, wish it was AWD that would make that shit even better, even with the shitty Ford AWD back in the day, but u can always tweak it now
