  • Batteries are an essential part to every DIY electric skateboard build. With battery packs our electric skateboards aren't going anywhere. The process of choosing which battery is right for you can be a little complicated, so hopefully this video clears a few things up for everyone.

    Very helpful videos, i appreciate the thoroughness. Im trying to repair my swag-board single hub. I took it all apart and checked the esc, battery and all the wires, and everything looks good. I put it all back together and it charged up and connected to the remote. I can hear it try to turn on in the motor a few times, before the wheel does a small jump and then everything dies. The board doesn't have much use, there is minimal wear so I'm thinking its a battery problem. Is there a doable fix?

    Mechanical engineer here:
    Here is my simple guide for picking the battery from what i learned researching this topic.
    If you want speed and power and don't give a damn for longevity -> Lipo batteries. (lipos are a fire hazard and must be stored in fire proof bags)
    Their instant power output is way higher than Li-ion.
    Instant power can be calculated with:
    Watts = V(battery max voltage) x Amp/hour (The 4 digit number on the battery pack casing) x "C" (the discharge rate of the lipo battery), e.g; Consider the lipo battery with 11.1V 2000mah 60C.
    11.1V x 2A (SI of 2000 mah is 2A) x 60 =1332 watts of instant power when it is fully charged, that's 1.3 kW of electrical power, but this quickly goes down as the battery voltage goes down fast due to the C rating.
    If you want convenience of charging and long cruises -> Li-ion battery packs.
    Usually these battery packs come pre-assembled with in-built BMS, they have a lower "C" (2-5 depending on technology used and manufacturer) discharge rating, but offer a longer trip, they take more time to drop their voltage since the C is lower.
    There is no middle ground to these 2 options. Yet.
    I'm not trying to be annoying or snobby. When i got started in this hobby i wished i'd already knew this.

    Hey Mike, does voltage of battery say 12s vs 10s or does motor size matter more when it comes to performance? I have a prebuilt board with a 12s battery and small 5055 motors. If I were to build a skateboard with 6354 motors at 2500 watts and 190kv but with a 10s3p battery do you reckon i’d be able to get much more torque?

Would this also be good? If you can please provide reasons as to why you say so.

It has the same configuration as an FIIK Big Daddy 800w just smaller wheels. I know I would need to strip the wires and add a connector that will fit into the the connector that comes with that kit. • @oneeyemonster3262

      Li po and li on dosnt have the same voltage per cell.
      Lipo fully charge are 4.2 V....li on are 3. 8 V
      10S Lipo = 42.V @ 50C.....verse li on 38v @ 20C....will yeah the lipo
      will go faster with twice the punch all day long.lol
      what you're asking about is the DISCHARGE RATE. ( C ratings)
      Lipo batteries has Higher discharge rate Options than Li on.
      The ESC has Voltage ratings on them...The Higher the amps...the better.
      Esc gets Hots (expensive)..
      It depends what MOTOR..you're using. The Motor will draw power.
      You dont want any of it to fry...Too much voltage to the motor will
      damage the motor....crappy C rating will damage the batteries and poor performance.
      You need to READ the SPEC on ALL of it..
      Drill batterys are probably 20C-30 C at most...Most people dont run drills for
      10-15 min continuously. You do not want li on cell reverse poling ( from HEAT)
      They make lipo at 50C -100 for CHEAP . now. It'll out perform li on ..all day long.
      One of these days..someone will get a bright idea of mounting aluminum
      on the bottom of the board as act as a HEAT SINK or Make an ALUMINUM BOARD :-P

    I fly drones a lot, so I already have a two channel balance charger and I'm very familiar with lipos' charge and discharge characteristics.
    Soo, I think I'm gonna buy 6 6s 5-6 Ah packs and connect them into 12s3p on top of the board, in the middle. 2p kinda scares me cause 7kWt will draw quite a high current even for a lipo

    Thanks for the helpful video! I have a Mototec 800w 36v single motor that I want to convert to lithium. The board came with 3 12v SLA batteries. Which battery would you recommend for this ? I'm uneasy about buying a new battery until I'm sure it will work with the boards components. I'm looking for as simple of a plug and play as possible but I'm not sure if I will need to replace the controller, motor, or rewire anything. Any advice would be greatly appreciated 🙏

    Good video, just a minor correction. Voltage doesn't mean anything about speed without discussing the gear ratio and the kv rating of the motor. A 6s setup on a 400kv motor will give the same "speed" and power (Although double the amps) vs. a 12s setup on a 200kv motor. In terms of watts, speed, power it will be equal, just need to have a larger ESC for the lower voltage.

    • @MBoardsco
      @MBoardsco  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct. If the KV rating and gearing ratio remain constant then the voltage will fully impact the speed.

    • @jasonfranciosa
      @jasonfranciosa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MBoardsco Also, you need to be very careful when increasing voltages without changing KV and Gearing as the power (Watts) to the motor will go up exponentially as voltage increases with no change in KV. Your ESC will need to be much larger and your motors may burn out if you push it with too much voltage.
      I just purchased a Meepo Classic as my first e-skateboard, but, your channel has me curious to build a board as I already have the majority of the required components (Motors, batteries, esc's). If I build one, I would probably want to build an AT board as I don't like the current options available on the market.
      What are some good resources to see what other builders have done with AT DIY Boards?

    @mboards Does the 'C' discharge matter? For example is a battery with a 20-30c discharge, 5000mAh, and 6 sell 22.2v better than a 14-24c discharge, 12000 mAh, 6s 22.2v battery?

    • @nicholasgianoplus3904
      @nicholasgianoplus3904 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the discharge rating is very crucial for your acceleration and hill climbing. It also helps with voltage sag.

    • @MBoardsco
      @MBoardsco  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      C Rating refers to your discharge rate. If you search for a C rating to discharge rate calculator online you’ll get a better understanding on what to look for when searching for a battery.

    • @gregladner6992
      @gregladner6992 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      C rating is based on capacity, 5,000 mah x 20c = 100 amps, 12,000 mah x 14c = 168 amps. In theory, most fudge a lot on the printed c ratings.

    I got a 36v 15a 7ah aerdu battery from alliexpress for only £55 and its good for 20mph and a gradient of 20%. For me it's the perfect speed and the range is about 15 miles. If you ever need a replacement battery but you're broke its a good alternative.
    I think there is a 25a 10ah version as well which is a direct replacement for the wowgo 3 and claims double the capacity and costs £45 less than the official battery... Judging by the the battery I got I would guess the specs are accurate 🙂.
