    Mechanical engineer here:
    Here is my simple guide for picking the battery from what i learned researching this topic.
    If you want speed and power and don't give a damn for longevity -> Lipo batteries. (lipos are a fire hazard and must be stored in fire proof bags)
    Their instant power output is way higher than Li-ion.
    Instant power can be calculated with:
    Watts = V(battery max voltage) x Amp/hour (The 4 digit number on the battery pack casing) x "C" (the discharge rate of the lipo battery), e.g; Consider the lipo battery with 11.1V 2000mah 60C.
    11.1V x 2A (SI of 2000 mah is 2A) x 60 =1332 watts of instant power when it is fully charged, that's 1.3 kW of electrical power, but this quickly goes down as the battery voltage goes down fast due to the C rating.
    If you want convenience of charging and long cruises -> Li-ion battery packs.
    Usually these battery packs come pre-assembled with in-built BMS, they have a lower "C" (2-5 depending on technology used and manufacturer) discharge rating, but offer a longer trip, they take more time to drop their voltage since the C is lower.
    There is no middle ground to these 2 options. Yet.
    I'm not trying to be annoying or snobby. When i got started in this hobby i wished i'd already knew this.

    Good video, just a minor correction. Voltage doesn't mean anything about speed without discussing the gear ratio and the kv rating of the motor. A 6s setup on a 400kv motor will give the same "speed" and power (Although double the amps) vs. a 12s setup on a 200kv motor. In terms of watts, speed, power it will be equal, just need to have a larger ESC for the lower voltage.

    • @MBoardsco
      @MBoardsco  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct. If the KV rating and gearing ratio remain constant then the voltage will fully impact the speed.

    • @jasonfranciosa
      @jasonfranciosa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MBoardsco Also, you need to be very careful when increasing voltages without changing KV and Gearing as the power (Watts) to the motor will go up exponentially as voltage increases with no change in KV. Your ESC will need to be much larger and your motors may burn out if you push it with too much voltage.
      I just purchased a Meepo Classic as my first e-skateboard, but, your channel has me curious to build a board as I already have the majority of the required components (Motors, batteries, esc's). If I build one, I would probably want to build an AT board as I don't like the current options available on the market.
      What are some good resources to see what other builders have done with AT DIY Boards?

      An electric skateboard consumes at least 10Wh/km. You have to convert your battery to Wh to calulate the milage. You need the mAh rating of the cells.

    Very helpful videos, i appreciate the thoroughness. Im trying to repair my swag-board single hub. I took it all apart and checked the esc, battery and all the wires, and everything looks good. I put it all back together and it charged up and connected to the remote. I can hear it try to turn on in the motor a few times, before the wheel does a small jump and then everything dies. The board doesn't have much use, there is minimal wear so I'm thinking its a battery problem. Is there a doable fix?

    Focbox unity is my vesc if that helps any.

      We’d recommend a battery with a few more cells in parallel to supply enough output to the motors. We’d recommend 6s4p. Should be able to get away with a 6s3p.

    Hey Mike, so I am still doing research about making my own eBoard. I came across "Samsung 40T 21700 4000mAh 35A Battery", what are your input on that battery? From what I see on the Mboards website, the Samsung 25R and 30q are mainly used. But they have lesser capacity and output, however this battery has higher capacity and output. Would this also be good? If you can please provide reasons as to why you say so.

    Quick question, i want to use a e-bike battery wich is 10s4p, and uses cells with a 10A max discharge. However in spec sheets i see the continuous discharge is about 0.43A per cell. Is this a problem?

    • @MBoardsco
      @MBoardsco  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can only pull .43a continuous then yes that would be a problem. You’ll want to find cells that can handle at least 10a continuous in a 4p set up.

      @@MBoardsco thanks for the reply, i already had the stuff so used it anyway, since its a 4s it gives me about 2A contineously. It works fine but for 2 seconds it cuts out and then picks up again. Happens every 40 seconds or so. Switched to lipo since then.

    @mboards Does the 'C' discharge matter? For example is a battery with a 20-30c discharge, 5000mAh, and 6 sell 22.2v better than a 14-24c discharge, 12000 mAh, 6s 22.2v battery?

    • @nicholasgianoplus3904
      @nicholasgianoplus3904 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the discharge rating is very crucial for your acceleration and hill climbing. It also helps with voltage sag.

    • @MBoardsco
      @MBoardsco  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      C Rating refers to your discharge rate. If you search for a C rating to discharge rate calculator online you’ll get a better understanding on what to look for when searching for a battery.

    • @gregladner6992
      @gregladner6992 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      C rating is based on capacity, 5,000 mah x 20c = 100 amps, 12,000 mah x 14c = 168 amps. In theory, most fudge a lot on the printed c ratings.

    1s - 3.7v
    2s - 3.8v
    3s - 3.8v
    I need to know is this battery is good or not. because of the 1s voltage is low.

    • @johnrodriguez2439
      @johnrodriguez2439 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats normal, when you charge it the charger will balance the cells properly "assuiming you use the balance lead"
      Also for lipos there is a breakin period of about 10 to 20 cycles, at that point now the pack is ready to use at full output

    Ah and Wh units are directly convertible with each other. An expert should only concern themselves with Ah when selecting batteries (because this is a unit that would be consistently comparable across diff batteries, and it is a piece of information readily available when researching the cells in the pack). Wh is a useful unit in determining range yes - but not for battery shopping.
