    If your opponent leg is too far just circling would bring him down. People bring their leg closer, so that they can maintain balance. So when they do that, then you trip them.

    He did a variation of lifting a thigh and then tripping the balancing leg in Derrick Lewis fight that was preaty cool stuff and how he followed up a unsuccesfull choke attempt to a take down by walking backwards while in choking position making Derrick walk forward then he moved forward got closed to derricks leg and imidietly went for the leg to grab it after he released the head to go for a leg lift off to unballance Lewis and move forward to drive him to the ground. Really smart and on the spot thinking and practise.

    Cormier is a wonderful wrestler, usually when a fighter goes to the single leg, the other defend and if it last more than 2 3 seconds, the defender will escape, but Cormier, when he catches your leg it can last 15 seconds (like in the Volkan fight) but you're sure you're gonna fall

    CRUCIAL QUESTION:
    If you want to train for MMA and want to have Wrestling as your strongest background/fighting style. Should you just go to an MMA gym and train striking, bjj AND WRESTLING AT THE SAME TIME (whilst prioritising your wrestling training) or should you only train in NOTHING BUT TOURNAMENT WRESTLING FIRST for some time before transitioning to MMA? I really wanna know which method is best.

      I understand your willingness to learn everything that you can about MMA, but please do not post the same questions on different videos. Once is enough.
      GSP trained wrestling when he started MMA and he became better in MMA wrestling that many wrestlers. But I think that it is generally better to train in wrestling or BJJ for some time and that switch to MMA.

    Its hard to wrap my mind around mma wrestling and tournament wrestling.
    Folkstyle wrestling "single leg" is when your heads on the inside of their body.
    However when you have one leg and head on the outside its considered a high crotch in folkstyle.
    Is it dangerous to put your head on the inside when going for a single in mma? Thanks.

    • @MMACoach79
      @MMACoach79  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes and no. There is a possibility of getting kneed to the face if your head is inside and low. I think Anderson Silva kneed someone who tried and inside single but I'm not sure.

    • @josephc7232
      @josephc7232 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your head is in the inside you risk getting hit, if it's on the outside you could get crossfaced. It seems like the single is more risky than other takedowns

    • @GTL5427
      @GTL5427 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Super late, I know, but to my understanding, leaving your head on the inside is dangerous vs knees (watch Israel Adesanya vs Derek Brunson or Chris Weidman vs Yoel Romero to see examples of someone eating + getting KO’d off a takedown attempt with the head inside) Another vulnerability is leaving your head on the inside makes you susceptible to a guillotine, since they can close guard and finish you. However, leaving your head on the outside means you should finish in half or side control leaving you much less vulnerable to being finished with a guillotine. I might be misremembering, but I think Rockhold finishes David Branch off a takedown with the head inside. If not Branch, it’s one of his other Guillotine finishes.

    • @andrewferris4539
      @andrewferris4539 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're more vulnerable to the guillotine with your head on the outside than on the inside, that is why wrestlers prefer the single leg with their head on the inside, where in MMA the trade off with your head on the outside is that you're only vulnerable to the guillotine as opposed to the guillotine + knee. With your head is on the outside, you're taking an inferior wrestling position in order to avoid their striking altogether - so the net strategy is safer.

    Is there a big difference for these techniques if I'm a southpaw? Thank you coach

    • @MMACoach79
      @MMACoach79  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. You can set the single leg takedown up in many ways in both stances. I mostly fight in southpaw and the setup that works for me all the time (against an orthodox fighters) is fake cross to a single leg. Before a fake cross you can fire it for real once or twice (or a jab-cross), and once you get your opponent thinking that something is flying towards his face, go for the single. So stop the cross half-way and transition to the single.

    In my opinion if you have to work as hard as Daniel Cormier for a take down, and you are not Olympic grade whrestler, then is not worth it. A quick trip like Judoka or Jitc sweep reversal is much better in my experience. But to wrestle in a middle of a fight it's not very efficient for many reasons. First is that there is a lot of counters to takedowns, like many guillotine variations and also chokes and holds one can easily counter with. Especialy in today's mma schools to traditional single or dubble leg takedowns, as they are most common. Also Reversals such us judo roll over with a kick of a leg when it's between a takedowner's legs, into full mount. wrestling is good and should be used just not as main weapon or put as much energy into it as DC and other wrestlers in mma use to do. There is a lot of punishment if you fail on a take down. or if you quickly get countered or reversed.
    the most irritating part in a fight fans reaction is when someone gets a takedown fans go crazy like Woooww like it's KO or idk something fight ending. but really fight is far from over.. the Ignorence I guess it what gets to me. Take down is not a wow. the guy stoping it or reversing it is a wow.

    • @MMACoach79
      @MMACoach79  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I only partially agree. Many judo takedowns are easier in terms of energy expenditure, but judo is probably the most difficult martial art to learn motorically. So many of it's takedowns look easy but are difficult to time right and execute well.
      Yes, Cormier sometimes expends a lot of energy on a single leg or other takedowns, but bare in mind that he is fighting top level opponents and he still takes them down most of the time. So the single might require more energy to pull off on a very resisting opponent (sometimes it doesn't), but it is a lot easier to learn than most Judo throws.
      Sure, everybody knows how to defend the double leg and single leg, and not many know how to defend Judo throws (which has been an advantage for me during my competition days), but still the double leg and single leg takedowns are the most utilized takedowns in MMA. Here are the stats to back it up (they are from 2014, but the situation is probably not much different today): www.bjjee.com/articles/fight-stats-double-leg-is-the-most-common-mma-takedown-nurmagomedov-most-successful-takedown-artist/
      To me the takedown is more a wow that a takedown defense.

      MMA Coach :) thanks for replay thanks for staying on top of your discussion, I was saying judo trips and flip reversals, not so much of actual technical and self sacrificing throws.

    • @MMACoach79
      @MMACoach79  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Even trips are hard to time. Take for example the foot trip (deashi barai). It is probably the most energy efficient throw there is. The force you use is almost nothing, but it is so hard to pull off. The setup and timing must be spot on or else you end up kicking your opponent.
      th-cam.com/video/dnwslpFUVaA/w-d-xo.html

    • @brandenvawter83
      @brandenvawter83 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, offense is more technical than defense. Think about it there's more steps, details, technique involved in executing a great double leg. A sprawl is easier to learn to execute the move properly than a double. It has fewer steps and details less technical. I was impressed when Nick stuffed some of gsp takedowns. But would be far more impressed if he all of a sudden took someone down with a double as good as gsp does. A sprawl is like what three steps. Under hook, drop your hips low, kick your legs back. A double is first head up, back straight, hips in, lower your level, penetration step forward, pound stomach with shoulder, trail leg up, turn the corner or t up, head up pressed against their back to avoid giotine, block the far leg, lift the closest leg, looking across their back, move your feet and drive like your gonna cart weel them. There's a lot involved in a good double. The difficult part of take down defense is the timing not the move itself. Armbar same thing it's easier to learn defence than offence with the armbar.
