    Thank you so much for the detailed instructions and video! I've done a couple of brake and rotor replacements over the years but never on a Mercedes. The Euro shop wanted over $600 to replace them and I bought Zimmerman rotors and high end ceramic pads. There were cheap metallic ones on the car and the 21mm bolts were super tight on mine as well. I had to use a pipe on the ratchet and pull pretty hard to loosen them. But then everything was a piece of cake. You saved me $300 in labor and I'm confident they are installed, torqued and lubricated better than if a shop or dealer would have installed them. This video was so helpful!

      the job will be very similar and may even be the same parts between the 350, 450 and 550

    Hi, I am wondering how you loosened the caliper bracket bolts since you said they were in so tight. I just tried to change the pads/rotors on my 2013 GL, and I could not get the caliper bracket bolts to budge. I did not have a 21mm shallow 6 point socket so I put everything back together to try again. I think the caliper pins and the caliper bracket bolt are to be torqued to 40 Nm, but these were in a lot tighter than that.

    • @discodaze9972
      @discodaze9972  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it happens. People always over tighten hardware and use the wrong thread locker. I had a really hard time. Took me 30 min to get each bolt out. Used a long 1/2” drive ratchet and a lot of muscle.

      @@discodaze9972 You're lucky the head didn't break off. Locktite red can some times do that.

      This is why I'm here. I can't budge it. Applied a little WD40, but I'm going to buy a longer wrench.

    How much were the brake pads and rotors. Are mercedes parts significantly better or the ones you installed equal to mb parts just cheaper.
    How long did it take you to change the parts ?
    Thank you.
    I have 160k on mine bought it used with 150k two years ago now hardly drive it. Just recently changed the starter.
    Some people like yourself. Said they could take the starter out without taking apart the front end. Said they could do it in under an hr.
    Others said 3 hr job.
    Saw starter part on ebay and other auto parts retailers for 108 -235 dollars . They all can't be the same.
    I put in oem part bosch.
    Significantly more than ebay . Autobarn.. napa oreilly part.

    May I know how (or on which point) you jack up GL450? I saw your jack stand in your video, but would like to know in details. better if you have a video (or a picture) on that. thank you.

    • @dukesilvergold
      @dukesilvergold 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you need to put jack stand on the driver or passenger side, the easiest way is to jack up from the front center jack point which is located right below the engine bay. There is a round caved in area that can be seen clearly. It matches up most round rubber pad of jacks.

  • @darioussmith3450

    Should hardware be on the front and rear or just the rear? I purchased brake pads for my 2017 Mercedes GLS 450 from the dealership, but the dealership box had only rear hardware, not front hardware. The shop that did my brakes showed me that my front brakes move back and forth because no hardware came with brakes. They also showed me that the rear brakes do not move because it has hardware. Should there be hardware in the front as well?

    • @discodaze9972
      @discodaze9972  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will typically re-use the old hardware.

    Should I wait until the brake symbol appears before changing the break pad.

    • @discodaze9972
      @discodaze9972  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s up to you. You can wait if you want. I like to change the brakes as soon as I can feel pulsation in the breaks due to worn rotors. Rotors usually do not wear equally so they will start to pulsate when applying the breaks. That’s when I start thinking about doing the breaks, ordering parts, etc.
      My wife drives this car so I always make sure it is in top mechanical condition.

    How did you know what size tap to use ?

    • @discodaze9972
      @discodaze9972  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just checked the thread against the bolt. MB uses all standard size metric threads / pitch. Hold the tap against the thread of the bolt and the threads will fit perfectly together. Try one size larger and one size smaller and you will easily see that they don't fit.

    • @remodelassets6523
      @remodelassets6523 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Go to a machine shop supply store with the bolts they have charts and gauges also you can purchase taps from them
