Back in 1977-ish I went to a KISS concert in San Francisco with my buddy, the unknown band Cheap Trick was the opening act . Holly Molly did they put on a great show - Vocalist Robin Zander & Bassist Tom Peterson looked like rockers , lead guitarist Rick Nielsen acted wild & looked like he was from the 50’s - drummer Bun E Carlos looked like he just got off work at the office
Their energy was crazy. Their music and musicianship was fantastic., I still remember spending the next week telling everybody I knew about this crazy band Cheap Trick I just saw. 😁.

I saw the same Kiss concert tour in Vancouver, B.C. that year. I echo your comments. I didn't know who Cheap trick was either. The band killed it! And yes, two looked like rock stars of that era and Bun E. Carlos was an interesting looking character but I couldn't take my eyes off of Rick Nieison in his 'odd' attire and his crazy mannerisms and antics on stage.(and a very good axeman!) Needless to say, I bought my first Cheap Trick album after that concert and many more after that.

Really, at the Cow Palace ?
      I was around 16-17
Anyway those guys were so damn good. Rick was so wild on stage and he kept strapping one guitar over another during each song & constantly flicking guitar picks into the crowd. As a drummer I was watching Bun E. and he was holding it down back there
Us old farts had some fun back in the day 🫵

Yup I was at that show Tuesday August 16th 1977 at the Cow Palace. It was the night Elvis Presley passed away. As I recall it took the 14,000 in attendance about 2 to 3 songs to finally warm up to Cheap Trick. I thought they were pretty awesome. Such a raw huge stage sound, and a fun band to watch live with great tunes!!!!!!! 👍🎸

This is my favorite band in life, older brothers had their albums, listened very times, first concert in 8th grade, born on Christmas Eve, so best friend present was tickets at LA Forum, where the Lakers Kareem and Magic showtime was, on New Year's Eve. His Dad a fan, drove us, concert was on LA FM live, so he listened, we watched!
Robin Zander is youngest in band, nicknamed by producers as Man with the 1000 Voices, soft singing like this, hard singing in hard rock songs. Every album has softs, and fast hard songs. They are still playing in tours, all in 70s now, their sons in band, as drummer when original retired, and Robin Jr, singer like his Dad, sings all songs together with Dad, helps the high ones Robin like this had in 20s.
They started in 1974 from Rockford Illinois, all went to school together. First album, now loved, was flopped, not on radio, but tours in close states for many fans. Japan saw a magazine of band photos, two good looking ones, and the two others, guitar guy funny, drummer heavy and smoking while drumming, Japanese kids loved it, their first two albums, 2nd with this song, was released in Japan, and got famous but there. So later 70s, they went there, looked in window of plane, thought someone super famous was at airport, thousands of fans yelling. When landed, found out was them, unknown out of Illinois and Midwest, like Beatles in 60s Their two concerts there were live on TV, and recorded on radio FM too. This is what you watched, song on album, producers made it like a pop slow love song, but live, guitar is in front, back, in middle, awesome yet how he acts, some don't realize he's a legend player. His son is drummer. He writes 99% of their songs, Robin the others
This concerts, both nights, so awesome, the radio record was sent to USA, put on radio, this song and Surrender, their two most known songs in world, first heard live in Japan. Two albums they wrote in late 70s had to wait, because the concert came an album, went to #1 and loved around the world. Came home, still unknown , but we're higher in tours, big bands had them open, so by 1979, their two albums waiting came out, and had hits, radio, everything changed because of Japanese fans loving them, you can hear the girls screaming in back. So watch Surrender in Japan like this, and have to watch them make 50s piano song Ain't that a Shame into a rock song, and also hit in radio. Love all their songs, watched concerts 8 times in LA, have DVDs of concerts around world, those were put on TH-cam in Australia and their 25th anniversary, 1999 , home in Rockford, called concert Silver, released as DVD, but on TH-cam, recommend it seeing them in prime, mid 40s, playing and singing best, all their hits. Outside, many thousands going crazy, their local home band now world famous! They made Hall of Fame in 2016, their speaks are on TH-cam also
You'll like all their songs, many belong on playlists!

Rick Neilson is an amazing guitarist, a funny stage performer, and also an incredible human being. He has been known to help other bands out in times of need. One time, a bands trailer filled with all their gear got stolen. Rick came to the rescue, and loaned them everything they needed to put on their shows until they could replace their gear. Live at Budokon is a great live LP from 1978, and the Japanese fans went crazy for them. Their biggest hit was "The Flame" at #1 on the BB charts. Their other biggest hit, was one I never got into "Dream Police". If you want to see more of the drummer (who is also a jokester), check out their cover of "Don't be Cruel" a video from 1988.

Cheap Trick had two different halves to their image, two nerds, Guitarist Rick Nielson and Drummer and Band Manager Bun E. Carlos, and two Rockers, Lead Singer and Rhythm Guitarist Robin Zander and Bassist Tom Peterson. They were BIG, BIG, BIG in the late 70's and early 80's. "I Want You To Want Me", was their first hit. Also "Dream Police" and "Surrender".

U also know Cheap Trick from the theme song of "That 70's Show" 😂Their first big record in America was this live album 'Cheap Trick at Budokan' in 1978; Cheap Trick was bigger overseas In Japan before they became popular in the US... despite hailing from Rockford, Illinois and considered one of the best live rock bands from the 70's.
Cheap Trick was formed in 1973... their configuration was 2 good-looking guys (Robin Zander on lead vocals & rhythm guitar and Tom Petersson on bass) and 2 average guys (Rick Nielsen on lead guitar and Bun E. Carlos on drums)... They debuted in 1977 w/ their self-titled album... followed by 'In color' (also 1977) and 'Heaven tonight' (1978)... But it was their 1978 live album 'Cheap Trick at Budokan' (recorded in Japan) that sold 3x platinum in the US and pushed sales of both 'In color' and 'Heaven tonight' past platinum (1 million copies each) in the US.
4th album 'Dream Police' in 1979 was another platinum success... followed by 5th album 'All shook up' in 1980 which sold gold (half million copies)... as did 6th album 'One on one' in 1982. However, Cheap Trick declined rapidly in the 80's and needed a hit after 3 subsequent albums failed commercially.
In 1988, Cheap Trick scored another platinum album 'Lap of luxury'... thanks to a #1 single 'The Flame'.
However, subsequent studio albums failed commercially in the US but still sold well in Japan... Thanks to Cheap Trick featured on "That 70's Show"... Their music found a new generation of fans and their 2000 greatest hits album "Authorized Greatest Hits" sold decently... In 2016, they were briefly signed to Taylor Swift's (now former) label Big Machine Records.
In 2010, drummer Bun E. Carlos parted ways w/ Cheap Trick due to internal and business disputes (Cheap Trick is currently a trio w/ a session drummer Daxx Nielsen, son of guitarist Rick Nielsen)... but Carlos did appear w/ Cheap Trick when the band were inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
Cheap Trick released their 20th album 'In another world' in 2021... and recently opened a major tour w/ Def Leppard and Journey.

This comes from their CHEAP TRICK: LIVE AT BUDDAKAN album. The Japanese fans were cheering so loudly at the show, that when the band's producers were playing back the recordings to make the album, they had to get the band come in to overdub, because the audience was louder than the band on the recordings!!&! They are currently out on tour now opening for HEART.

Rick Nielsen, the guitarist, wrote this song (as well as most of their songs). I've read that he was inspired to write it after watching a movie with his father. Young Rick had wanted to watch a cowboy and Indians movie, but his dad said "No" and continued viewing some old love story movie. Rick joined him and got the idea for "I Want You to Want Me." I wonder if the lyrics about "shine up my old brown shoes, put on a brand new shirt, I'll get home early from work if you'll say that you love me" were actually in that movie. Nope, don't have name of the movie.

CHEAP TRICK has been on tour EVERY year since 1974. Currently on tour with Def Leppard and Journey.
They are sometimes referred to America's Beatles, because they have written songs that sound like the Beatles, performed Beatles songs live, including an entire Live album of The Beatles Sgt Pepper with an orchestra. The Beatles never played that album live.
Side Note: Guitarist Rick Nielsen and drummer Bun E Carlos play on John Lennon Double Fantasy album. There is a video for "I'm Losing You" released 20 years after John Lennon died.

I knew Bun. He said he'd light one up before the first song and then just put an unlit one in his mouth for a couple songs and light it up between songs. By the time I met him (around 1990 or '91) he'd stopped smoking. But about two years later when I started playing guitar in a blues band I adopted his style. Got all my hair cut off, bought the round glasses, dressed in business shirts and always had a smoke in my mouth. For whatever reason it worked with the ladies. I was not a sex symbol and neither was he. But it worked for both of us. He was brilliant.

He wears unusual outfits. He likes to play notes and cords that he doesn't have to look at the guitar and can interact with the audience ...."Surrender".... "Ain't That A Shame"... I'm a big fan of Cheap Trick. Rick Nelson is wild with his actions and guitar play. Sometimes he plays a guitar that has 2 arm coming off of it. Not sure what it would be called.

Y’all should check out the song Surrender by Cheap Trick. Great song. The album At Budokan made a huge impact on me as a teenager.

This recording, made at the Budokan, had 14,000 screaming Japanese girls. It is an octagon shaped venue and unfortunately, the video sound is very much different from the audio in the album recording. This recording became legendary and the Budokan became a must stop venue for great and wannabe great rock groups. BABYMETAL made a recording of "In The Name Of" that is absolutely breathtaking in the Budokan.

My local grocery often has Hear And Now playing. It's funny to notice when the store is repeating a song. I wonder how many songs they rotate, they need some Cheap Trick too 🤓🏁

They wrote this kind of a joke almost. It was just tongue in cheek. They almost didn't play this live but since it was a hit in Japan they decided okay we'll put it on the set list. The studio version is embarrassing and they are mortified by it. This version redeems it.
The man has lots and lots and lots of good songs unfortunately record label didn't promote them that they should have. Also if you notice the Japanese fans are singing the song back to them. In the studio version after they say crying does a echo it was crying crying crying. It wasn't working that night so the Japanese fans did it for them. They're yelling crying crying crying
