The "I Want You to Want Me" live version is THE version to listen to. It's a long story, but that live version is the BEST version and it's even the version that radio stations play...every time!!!
@kirbyfears Several years ago i got home from work and my phone rang it was my friend Ric he said "You gotta come over right now"! I told him "I'm tired and just wanted to chill tonight". He replied "If you don't come over you will hate yourself for the rest of your life", I asked"Why"? He said "Just shut up and get over here". So I went, when I walked in I could hear music coming from his studio downstairs. When I walked into the studio there was Rick Nielsen playing guitar and my friend Ric playing drums, I just stood there with my mouth open. I ended up getting to jam with them for over an hour and then we had cocktails and talked for another 2 hours. Rick was in town buying a guitar from another friend of ours Pete Alenov, Pete sold guitars to some of the biggest Rock Stars in the world. It was just about the coolest time I ever had as I'm a huge Cheap Trick fan. My friend was right if I hadn't went to his that night I would have hated myself forever. RIP to my friends Ric & Pete.

You’ve listened to Cheap Trick four times and some how avoided the song they are best known for: “I Want You to Want Me”. Must listen to Live at Budokan version. It’s amazing. As for sounding like a 90s band Kurt Cobain once said about Nirvana: "We sound just like Cheap Trick, only the guitars are louder.”
Beavis and Butt-head watching a Cheap Trick video: "Like, if you saw that drummer, like, in the grocery store, you'd just like, probably just walk right past him." "Yeah, or you'd say, like, um, 'The light beer is over in aisle 14A, sir.'"
These guys are from my hometown of Rockford IL.. Robin Zander vocals Tom Peterson bass Rick Nielson guitars and Bun E Carlos drums. Check out the early stuff live at budakahn is epic.
I have seen Cheap Trick three times and they were all fantastic shows. The most interesting show was watching Cheap Trick perform the Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album from start to finish at the Las Vegas Hilton in September 2009. Afterwards they played their own hits. As a Beatles fan it was magical!!
There is a Cheap Trick tribute band in our area. They're called Those Men Inside My Brain. I was lucky enough to see Cheap Trick in concert. Great show!
"AIN'T THAT A SHAME/I WANT YOU TO WANT ME/SURRENDER" from the Live album 'Cheap Trick at Budokan' is a Must, with thousands of Japanese kids screaming - it's what put CT on the map. Recorded in April '78 and released in the US in Feb. '79.
This is my favorite song by CT. The drummer is so chill and relaxed. The backing vocals are on point. The lead vocals are always crisp and clean. And the guitar is always the driving force.
My favorite band in life, made Hall of Fame in 2016,should have been decade before. They are from Rockford Illinois, started in 1974, so 1999 concert, Silver, was their 25th anniversary, then released on DVD in 2000. They never stopped, drummer finally retired, replaced by guitar player son. Then Robin Zander, lead singer and one of best 5 rock singers ever, sang song with Heart singer Ann Wilson for movie, she always says he her favorite, can sing anything. You decide, on this album, Dream Police, two songs, Voices, a soft song and hit, and Gonna Raise Hell, a hard rock song that is fans favorite in concerts.Song on album, Way of the World, is one of my top 10 songs of them, have all their CDs, DVDs, and subscribe to them on here, all their albums with songs, concerts, interviews. His nickname from producers is Man with 1000 voices.... you'll see listening to those 2, then Way of the World
California man - Heaven tonight - On top of the world - Surrender - Gonna raise hell - Need your love - Voices - Ain't that a shame (Live at Budokan), those are great Cheap Trick songs to give a listen to.
To answer your question, Cheap Trick’s greatest success was in the late 70’s. ‘I want you to want me’ (1977), ‘Surrender’ (1978), Dream Police (1979). ‘The Flame’ was their come back hit in 1987. Their live album, ‘Live at Budokan’ (1978) was a massive hit.
I'm glad you did Cheap Trick because they are from my hometown here in Rockford, Illinois. Rick Nielsen he's the one who played double guitar, the plaid black and white one. I see him out and about all the time. They are getting ready to open a hard rock casino here next month and he will be right there because he was instrumental in getting it here in Rockford. So thank you for doing Cheap Trick
When I lived in Chicago back in the early 80's my good friend and I went to visit her aunt in Rockford. Her aunt was also Robin Zander's aunt on her father's side. I will never forget the visit where she tod us childhood stories of him!
Grew up about 45m from Cheap Tricks home town. Around here they're affectionately referred to as 'The Home Town boys ' I've seen them many times live and they put in some of the best shows. Hope you'll land on another favorite of mine by them called 'Tonight It's You'. Keep up the good work. 🎉
Cheap Trick was my 1st concert, seen them at the famous Fox Theater in Atlanta 1979! This jam along with "She's Tight", "Reach Out", "I Want Be Man" & of course the theme song to That '70s Show "That '70s Song" are my favorites ✌💖☮
Jay and Amber, great choice!!!! I strong recommend you take in their seminal hit I Want You To Want Me (Live), then listen to their progression with Voices!
Cheap Trick is an American rock band from Rockford, Illinois, formed in 1973 by guitarist Rick Nielsen, bassist Tom Petersson, lead vocalist Robin Zander and drummer Bun E. Carlos. The current lineup of the band consists of Zander, Nielsen and Petersson. Their work bridged elements of '60s guitar pop, hard rock, and punk rock, and would help set the template for subsequent power pop artists. Cheap Trick released their self-titled debut album in 1977 and, later that year, found success in Japan with the release of their second album, In Color. 1978's Heaven Tonight included the power pop classic "Surrender". The band achieved mainstream popularity in the United States in 1979 with the triple-platinum live album Cheap Trick At Budokan and a Top 10 single, a live recording of "I Want You to Want Me.” They followed with Dream Police (1979), their most commercially successful studio album, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart. After struggling with declining popularity and lineup changes in the 1980s, Cheap Trick experienced a major resurgence toward the end of the decade when they topped the US charts with the power ballad "The Flame". The band has continued releasing new music into the 21st century and maintains a constant touring schedule, having performed live more than 5,000 times since their formation. Cheap Trick have sold more than 20 million albums and built a dedicated cult following. Their influence has been cited by a diverse range of rock artists from both the mainstream and underground. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. When Cheap Trick toured in Japan for the first time in April 1978, they were received with a frenzy reminiscent of Beatlemania. During the tour, Cheap Trick recorded two concerts at the legendary Nippon Budokan martial arts sports arena in Tokyo, where the Beatles had also played in 1966. Ten tracks taken from both shows were compiled and released as a live album titled Cheap Trick At Budokan (also known as At Budokan), which was intended to be exclusive to Japan. The band's third studio album, Heaven Tonight was released in May 1978. The lead-off track "Surrender" was Cheap Trick's first single to chart in the United States, peaking at No. 62. It has gone on to become one of the band's signature songs. Demand for Cheap Trick At Budokan became so great that Epic Records finally released the album in the U.S. in February 1979. Cheap Trick At Budokan launched the band into international stardom, and the album went triple platinum in the United States. The first single from the album was the live version of "I Want You to Want Me", which had originally been released on In Color. It reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and became Cheap Trick's best-selling single to date. The second single, "Ain't That A Shame", peaked at No. 35. "Need Your Love" had already been recorded for the forthcoming Dream Police album that had already been finished, but after the unprecedented success of Cheap Trick At Budokan, Epic postponed the album's release. Dream Police was released later in 1979, and was their third album in a row produced by Tom Werman. The title track of the album was a hit single, as was "Voices". Dream Police also found the band taking its style in a more experimental direction by incorporating strings and dabbling in heavy metal on tracks like "Gonna Raise Hell". By 1980, Cheap Trick was headlining arenas.
Cheap Trick started in 1973 but their debut album didn't release until 1977. SIDENOTE: Guitarist Rick Nielsen has a very impressive guitar collection. In the spoof mockumentary movie "Spinal Tap", there is a joke scene that spoofs a Nielsen interview where Rick Nielson is showing his guitar collection to a rock magazine journalist.

Thanks for a great reaction video for one of my favorite songs of all time from one of my favorite bands of all time!!
A little over a decade ago I was dragged to the Stone Mountain Chili Cookoff. I'm allergic to beans so chili was never a big draw for me. To my amazement and surprise Cheap Trick takes the central stage and cranked up to 11. I've never turned down a Chili Cook invite again.
Our hometown boys here in Rockford Illinois! The town is set to open a new Hard Rock Casino and instead of the iconic lit up Gibson Guitar it will have Rick's Checkered Guitar!
The quintessential mid west American rock band. Awesome to see live. I want you to want me is a must. Rick Nielsen is an amazing guitar player and a phenomenal showman. Loved his guest spot on Boy Meets World
About time! This might be their best-known song ("Surrender" is the signature number, but I think this got more play over all), even though "The Flame" went to #1. But that was a late-career Diane Warren rent-a-hit. Once it was done with its run, the band faded back to where they'd been. This is them at their peak. Coming off of the success of the live album "At Budokan" and pushing towards mainstream stardom. This and the next single ("Voices") really helped cement their place. You've heard "If You Want My Love", you'll get lots of reccs for "I Want You to Want Me", but I think the best of those similarly titled songs is "Need Your Love", ESPECIALLY the live version from "At Budokan". Yes, it's 9.07 long, but that fits under your limit. Go for it. You will *not* be disappointed. And they are a 1970s band that continued into the 1980s at their peak, although they stuck around afterwards (and are still going today). I don't know if you ever watched "That 70s Show" , but the theme song for that show was Cheap Trick's "In The Street", in tribute to their being a strong 1970s band. And then, of course, there are "Heaven Tonight" and "Auf Wiedersehn", which are two sides fo the same story. But we'll get to those down the road. Enjoy.
Jay just so you know heres a list of SOME of the great BANDS ...FORMED... IN THE 1970s. Abba .The Eagles Queen, Boston. Areosmith Van Halen. White snake .The Clash. Kansas ,Toto .Blondie, The Cars .The Police .Acdc,Fog hat . ELO .BTO,. Journey , Foreigner,, Kc and the Sun Shine band. are just a sample of GREAT BANDS FORMED IN THE FANTASTIC 70s Amber
I knew you would like "The Dream Police". Cheap Trick has been making music since the 70's and hasn't stopped. Their last album "In Another World" 2021 and it's great. Robin Zander still sounds good. I think you would enjoy their Elvis Presley "Don't Be Cruel" which was a big hit for them
Cheap Trick was my very 1st concert. My sister had worked in a local department store that had a record department in it & was able to get me the huge display poster of the Dream Police album cover, hung on my wall for decades, still have it
Speaking of under-the-radar gems, their 1980 song, "Everything Works If You Let It," was part of the film, "Roadie," which starred none other than Meat Loaf.
They started the band in 1973. I only saw them play in 1980 - they headlined a bill (second on the bill was Prince, who most of the audience hadn't heard of yet) at the Memorial Coliseum in LA. They were SO much fun!
Watched Cheap Trick at a music festival , when they played this song , they recruited 3 local RCMO officers to come up on stage to sing back up. Sooooo friken coool
I have been lucky enough to see them in concert three times. Was even luckier to catch a guitar pick Rick Nielsen threw out into the audience, which I still have today! They are the best!
Very nice video from their 25th anniversary concert with Robin singing "Time Will Let You Know" with one of his daughters, who sang well, and is quite beautiful. Very touching how she grabs his hand after she sings her part.
The thing with Cheap Trick is that whether you like pop, rock or metal, you can love Cheap Trick. Their sound appeals in so many ways. I feel sorry for people that don't "get" them.
I saw Cheap Trick 30 years ago at an outdoor show. It was so loud I was sure the filling in my teeth were going to come out. I have never seen a live show played at anywhere near the power of that show again. One of those I'll never forget it nights.
Glad you're playing more Cheap Trick. Another group you haven't reacted to yet is Xtc from the UK. They got started in the 70s and were rock/indie. Some songs to check out would Generals and Majors, Making Plans for Nigel, Dear God, Ballad of Peter Pumpkin Head, Senses Working Overtime, Mayor of Simpleton, King For A Day
They remind me of summer, I am suddenly a new adult by then, picking up supplies in my homemade jean shorts, t-shirt, sunglasses, and a few car-loads of friends, about to head for the beach. The early summer of my life.
Bun E Carlos might be the most “under the radar” drummer ever.

"Like, if you saw that drummer, like, in the grocery store, you'd just like, probably just walk right past him."
"Yeah, or you'd say, like, um, 'The light beer is over in aisle 14A, sir.'"
And the guitar is always the driving force.
such an underrated band and song
🎯
I agree.
Indeed.
I've seen Cheap Trick more than any other band starting when I was 16. Always fun!
This band inspired SOOO many bands!!
His nickname from producers is Man with 1000 voices.... you'll see listening to those 2, then Way of the World
California man - Heaven tonight - On top of the world - Surrender - Gonna raise hell - Need your love - Voices - Ain't that a shame (Live at Budokan), those are great Cheap Trick songs to give a listen to.
.... but do note that California Man was originally by UK band The Move.
Their cover of Don’t Be Cruel 1987 was solid as well.
If I recall correctly, Rick is putting his guitar museum inside the casino.
@@kenqb5450 He's planning on doing that and putting a couple of his other guitars in there as well.
When I lived in Chicago back in the early 80's my good friend and I went to visit her aunt in Rockford. Her aunt was also Robin Zander's aunt on her father's side. I will never forget the visit where she tod us childhood stories of him!
@@leemcclements8889 That's awesome!! I bet you heard some very good stories😊
I'm just east of you in Harvard ! Howdy Neighbor !
You've picked one of the best rock songs ever written and recorded. This one's special.
I have a few Rick Neilson guitar picks from when I saw them, including one that he was chewing on during the show
Grew up about 45m from Cheap Tricks home town. Around here they're affectionately referred to as 'The Home Town boys ' I've seen them many times live and they put in some of the best shows. Hope you'll land on another favorite of mine by them called 'Tonight It's You'. Keep up the good work. 🎉
LOVE Cheap Trick! They are still rocking today, and they still sound amazing!
One of my FAVORITE SONGS back in the 80s!! Just a TAD MENTAL - and, a BANGER!! :) HUGS, YA'LL!!
one of the greatest bands no one knows. ain't THAT a shame!😪
Jay and Amber the lead singers name is Robin Zander I love Cheap Trick. Thanks you guys for sharing this video with us all !
Great band with great songs, and they're awesome live! They also did the theme song to That 70's show.
One of my all time favorite bands. Constantly touring and still making new music!
Cheap Trick was the first concert I seen in 1978 Heaven Tonight 🤘
My fave has always been ‘Surrender’
Mine as well.
I go back and forth between that one and this one as to what's my favorite. They're both so great!
Bought my first Cheap Trick album in 1977.
They are still touring and release new music every couple of years.
She’s Tight is a banger!
Bun E Carlos the triplets master 🥁 and of course the man of a thousand voices Robin. This was my first concert at the Fabulous Forum 😮
Rick Nielsen is the guitarist. Robin Zander is the lead singer
i so loved Robin Zander (singer) he was all over my bedroom wall in the late 70s lol
I've seen Cheap Trick quite a few times over the last 40 years. Robin Zander has gotten better year after year. This song is awesome live 🎸🎵
Singer - Robin Zander
Cheap Trick was a 70’s staple on the rock stations here in Boston ! ❤️🔥🎸 band formed in (1973) by the way Jay….. they are in a rock band 🤣😂🤣
Robin Zander (vocals, guitar), Rick Nielsen (guitar), Tom Petersson (bass), Bun E. Carlos (drums). Nielsen wrote the song.
Im pretty the bassist at this time was John Brant

I saw Cheap Trick in concert and it was by far one of the best concerts I have ever been to. They were phenomenal and Rick Nielson just blew me away with his talent and musicianship!!! Thanks for a great reaction video for one of my favorite songs of all time from one of my favorite bands of all time!!
Cheap Trick one of my fav bands formed in them 70s Amber.... Dream Police is from 1979
You should check out their song "Reach Out" from the Heavy Metal soundtrack album.
So funny. Just heard a cover of Surrender and thought "Jay and Amber need to revisit Cheap Trick", opened TH-cam and there you are! Well done
Cheap Trick just happens to be my favorite band. Their song, The Way of the World is very good.
Our hometown boys here in Rockford Illinois! The town is set to open a new Hard Rock Casino and instead of the iconic lit up Gibson Guitar it will have Rick's Checkered Guitar!
"Baby Likes To Rock" and "Surrender" are bangers. "Come On, Come On" is also a must.
They've checked out "Surrender".
Enjoy.
I have seen them in concert multiple times. Always a great show, and they are still touring. I have been a big fan since the 1970's.
GREAT live band!! Cheap Trick really made their name (Back in the day) with killer live shows!!
I think you would enjoy their Elvis Presley "Don't Be Cruel" which was a big hit for them
The guitarist wrote these lyrics so we can see how excentric he is the singer is singing in 3rd person channeling thr guitarist
Love CHEAP TRICK! Seen last year in Arizona. They sounded awesome.
Voices is an underrated gem by them.
I agree 100%. The official video of them on TH-cam doing that song is awesome.
I agree 100% on your agreement of 100%. Although when it comes to their slower songs, it’s pretty much a tie between that song and “Mandocello” .
@@57doodoo or the version from How I Met Your Mother when Ted gets drunk and sings in the bar.
They started the band in 1973. I only saw them play in 1980 - they headlined a bill (second on the bill was Prince, who most of the audience hadn't heard of yet) at the Memorial Coliseum in LA. They were SO much fun!
Apparently got their name from a comment regarding Slade and sure they covered one of their tracks too
The story is that they were at a Slade concert & (I think it was Tom Petersson) one of them said that Slade used every cheap trick in the book.
Watched Cheap Trick at a music festival , when they played this song , they recruited 3 local RCMO officers to come up on stage to sing back up.
Sooooo friken coool
Underrated band and song
one OF my fabv bands Formed in the 1970z .. Dream police 1979 Released
I have been lucky enough to see them in concert three times. Was even luckier to catch a guitar pick Rick Nielsen threw out into the audience, which I still have today! They are the best!
"I want you to want me" is probably their next best hit I reckon
Some songs to check out would Generals and Majors, Making Plans for Nigel, Dear God, Ballad of Peter Pumpkin Head, Senses Working Overtime, Mayor of Simpleton, King For A Day
XTC’s “Mayor of Simpleton” is excellent as well.
They remind me of summer, I am suddenly a new adult by then, picking up supplies in my homemade jean shorts, t-shirt, sunglasses, and a few car-loads of friends, about to head for the beach. The early summer of my life.
They are just as good live!
best band ever very underated
