Great video! I tried to leave a comment in your previous video about the ECU, but it didn't post. This ECU has been on radar for a while. I just need to come up with the cash to purchase it. I think this is a much better option than the Vortex because of the map switch.
I just bought an AIM ecu for my RL from tacomotoco. Thank you for the review, it really helped steer me in the right direction. Hopefully it will help me out on the Idaho single track!
@@BornAGoon Hey man went for a ride with the new AIM ECU on my RL, wanted to share my experience since you shared yours with me. I had TMC put the Enduro Map 5 in slot 1 for me since i didn't get the handlebar switch. All i can say is it feels like my buddies DRZ400, smooth smooth roll on, I purposely tried to stall the bike by lugging it and it was damn amazing how low of rpm i can go now, it literally will chug along. No more jerking and trying to control the throttle by stabilizing my finger on the brake lever at low speed. Power feels very linear and close to stock with map 5 enduro maybe 2-3 hp more on butt dyne. Secondly i was very impressed with the MPG, since before i was getting 45-50 with a JD jetting tuner, im now getting in the low 60's at 55-60mph cruising. This should be the first mod along with proper tires for any L or RL owner, it literally transforms your bike, i was a little skeptical at first and thought it was being hyped up but i gotta hand it to the guys at TMC its everything they made it out to be and actually maybe more. BTW you can bend the tab on the ecu bracket out of the way and it will work, no cutting required. 15min. install
Fellow Goon here! Thank you for testing the Aim cpu by itself on a stock bike. I've been on the fence about whether to buy the ktm or honda but after your review I'm going with the Honda. The Honda is a true dual sport where the ktm is a dirt bike with lights.
I've owned a couple exc models, and now own the Honda 450 RL. I definitely prefer the Honda. So many problems with the KTM. The Honda is much more refined.
I waited over 15 weeks for the vortex from tokyomods and ended up canceling my order. I ordered the vortex directly through vortex in Australia. It was a bit cheaper and i received it in less than 2 weeks. I'm getting my vortex and yoshi exhaust installed this weekend.
Congrats! Im sure the AIM is very good. In fact, I would guess all of the aftermarket ECU’ are very good and probably very comparable. Certainly miles better than the over compliant stock ECU as you found out. There is a lot of information around regarding the Vortex and not much on the newer arrivals. Other than the availability of the Vortex Ive heard no criticism of it. Im looking forward to tests of the newer models. After all, competition keeps things interesting. I run the Vortex with handlebar switch. I use maps 1 and 5 exclusively. I found those two settings work best for my needs. Very simple selection between the two. Best wishes on the rekindled relationship with your amazing 450.
I’ve been riding a DRZ400s for years now. I’m finally upgrading to a CRF450RL. Been Watching a lot of your videos and I’ve learned a lot! Definitely doing the ecu just have to decide between the vortex and AIM, second I think I wanna put the 450x can on it. Still get the quiet with out the cat.
Congratulations on getting the ECU. Now you can begin to tap into the full potential of this bike. I’ve been running the Vortex for a year now and I took Mike up on his challenge and ordered the Aim to compare. He assured me I will like it better. We’ll see. Keep up the good work.
@@BornAGoon Will do. The Aim ECU is currently on its way back to TacoMotoCo to receive the latest firmware which allows for TPS calibration. According to Mike, this will correct issues some bikes were having with the Aim including mine.
@@qb7384 so my experience with the Aim ECU was not positive. After messing around with it for 3+ weeks I ultimately sent it back for a full refund. When I first installed it was smooth off idle but compared to the Vortex was very lacking in the low and mid range although the top end did provide a nice mx type hit. Also, the bike was running hot, when going from 25% throttle to WOT it would hesitate, and when trying to maintain a constant speed it would “hunt” or surge. After texting back and forth with Mike he thought my TPS calibration was off but in order to do the TPS calibration I had to send the ECU back for a firmware update. So a week later I get the ECU back with firmware 5.23. I do the TPS calibration and the bike still runs poorly as before. By this time I do have the handlebar switch so I am able to test all five maps and they all exhibit the same symptoms. At this point I’ve lost all confidence in the Aim and elect to send it back for a full refund. Also, the mpg and fuel consumption display does not work with the Aim ECU. Mike was very good throughout the process and I do believe he’s trying but IMHO the Aim ECU needs more development. I’m not and engine tuner but the taco maps all felt very lean on my bike. Mike said that my fuel pressure was probably out of spec but I don’t buy it. My bike is a 2022 model. My fuel pressure was fine with the factory ECU and it was fine with the Vortex ECU. I reinstalled the Vortex. It’s run flawlessly for the past year and still runs flawlessly. The Vortex just plain works for me. I wanted the Aim to work as I really like its handlebar switch but it just didn’t live up to the hype. I hope this helps.
Would be fun to see a comparison between the vortex and AIM ecu's. You already mentioned it, but the big advantage of the AIM ecu is you can select five maps. I think most will learn only two are worth selecting, but I could be wrong.
The units ship from Taco Moto in map mode 1 unless you specified (and we call orders that haven’t) that you’d like it defaulted to be plug and play ready in another map than 1. If a map switch is later plugged in the map switch overrides any defaults and the unit now follows the switch.
Did you have any fuel in you oil before adding the aim? What about after? You should cancel the Tokyo mods order and go direct to get it sooner. I would love to see the comparison on the two ECUs.
I bought an AIM With HB Switch and User Bridge in May. against User Manual It came with the same Map in all Positions and Traction Control disabled falling back to Map 1 after ignition off/on. Reinstalling with FW 5.20 Starting, then switching from Map 1to 4 then Engin off/on and now... Switch is dead by blinking Map 1. i send that Hack back so they have a second try to fix. i couldn't feel more Power than the original Honda US ECU with it's 38 hp Until today i would say the AIM stuff isn't woth the money
