When I was a teenager, my father found several racoon kits milling around a dead mother and he brought them home. I learned a lot about how wild animals are not pets during that time. They are cute and their little paws are so amazing, but they are wild animals. I'm really glad you emphasized this in your video.

I have heard that they are very curious and creative, which for most animals means they tear apart their environment in their quest to explore it.

@@ragnkja I will never forget one of them who would wait until we opened a door to go outside and he would charge into the house and run straight for one of our cupboards and begin frantically throwing everything out looking for the box of cereal he loved. My mother in the background yelling at him and me grabbing him by the tail, holding him in the air trying desperately not to get bit.

Beautiful clingy boy! It was hilarious to watch him climbing all over you haha! I also didn't know (or possibly forgot?) that raccoons relied on touch so much, which is kind of surprising to me since they're so common. I'm excited to see how he grows!

Raccoons are impressive: smart, tough, adaptable omnivores. If they ever developed the ability and inclination to team up with the corvids for a coup, our position as dominant species would be history. ;)

Where I'm from, we call raccoons "Nightbois", so Ringo has a special place in my heart already.
Even though they are a nuisance, and love to make a mess of improperly secured garbage cans, I love that my city has embraced them as an unofficial mascot.
I would love to see a video about the "City nightlife trifecta: opossum, skunk, and racoon".

A few years back there was a litter(?) of raccoons born under my porch. I was in the country, and they weren't hurting anything, so I let them be. There were four, and they'd run around in the yard at night, chasing each other up trees. It was so much fun watching them, before they left.

For some reason I didn’t think there were raccoons in Florida (probably because they’re so fuzzy that I assumed they would prefer colder locales). But now that I think of it, 1) Florida has a little bit of everything, and 2) there’s probably no place a raccoon couldn’t settle right in!

Raccoon raccoon raccoon!!!! My favorite among the critters that have adapted to urban life. A lot of folks get annoyed with them but to me they are way less annoying (and less likely to damage the house!) than squirrels, hehe
Ringo sure looks like he loves to cuddle! I'm betting that he won't have any trouble at all adjusting to all the touching! Also, giving him the little foot rubs (paw rubs?) was ADORABLE!

When I was about 8 yrs old, my dad found an abandoned racoon kit that might have been just a month or two old. Of course, I name 'her' Rachael, and she lived with us for a bit until my parents found a rescue center to take her in (this was pre-internet, so you couldn't just google it - LOL) She mostly ate baby food, and especially loved cream cheese & fresh pitted cherries, and her little nose & hands were always exploring! This was almost 30 years ago, and I still feel like a kid when I think of her! ❤️❤️❤️

Hey Jessi an idea for Ringo's enrichment. Try getting his paws wet with water it intensifies his touch. I noticed raccoons washing my sausages in the wet grass they were clean when I put them in the cooler. I'm guessing they were doing it for another reason. Another idea get some egg shaped pieces of wood and let Ringo dip his hands in different colours of food safe paint and give the wood egg to him to paint, then you can sell it. Glad to see another animal made it into your care.

OH MY GOD HE IS SO ADORABLE FSHKKKGRBLL **melts** || I'm pretty sure if I were an animal other than human, I'd be a raccoon. Tenacious/stubborn, curious, good climber, nocturnal, food motivated, semi-social, omnivorous, lives in dens. Yep! || I would love to harness train my ferrets, but it's very hard to keep ferrets in a harness. They can slip out of it no matter what, so I don't feel safe taking them outside on a leash. I did it briefly at the vet to let my boi try to potty (he didn't).. but I was extremely nervous the whole time, and brough him back in the car after only a couple minutes. If he'd caught sight of something he really wanted, he could have been out of the harness and down the street before I could do anything about it. All my ferrets could. But.. there's just no way to make a harness that ferrets can't get out of.

I was wondering about their name and their family. Are they more like a bear or like a fox? Neither!
I found this information including a lot of animal names I never heard before.
    Family:
"Procyonidae is a New World family of the order Carnivora. It comprises the raccoons, coatis, kinkajous, olingos, olinguitos, ringtails, and cacomistles. Procyonids inhabit a wide range of environments and are generally omnivorous.
    Characteristics:
Procyonids are relatively small animals, with generally slender bodies and long tails, though the common raccoon tends to be bulky.
Because of their general build, the Procyonidae are often popularly viewed as smaller cousins of the bear family. This is apparent in their German names: a raccoon is called a Waschbär (washing bear, as it "washes" its food before eating), a coati is a Nasenbär (nose-bear), while a kinkajou is a Honigbär (honey-bear). Dutch follows suit, calling the animals wasbeer, neusbeer and rolstaartbeer respectively. However, it is now believed that procyonids are more closely related to mustelids than to bears."
    Source:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procyonidae?wprov=sfla1
    Name:
"Names for the species include the common raccoon, North American raccoon, and northern raccoon, The word "raccoon" was adopted into English from the native Powhatan term, as used in the Colony of Virginia. It was recorded on John Smith's list of Powhatan words as aroughcun, and on that of William Strachey as arathkone. It has also been identified as a reflex of a Proto-Algonquian root ahrah-koon-em, meaning "[the] one who rubs, scrubs and scratches with its hands". The word is sometimes spelled as racoon.
Spanish colonists adopted the Spanish word mapache from the Nahuatl mapachtli of the Aztecs, meaning "[the] one who takes everything in its hands". In many languages, the raccoon is named for its characteristic dousing behavior in conjunction with that language's term for bear, for example Waschbär ('wash-bear') in German, Huan Xiong (浣熊 'wash-bear') in Chinese, dvivón róchetz (דביבון רוחץ 'washing-bear[dim]') in Hebrew, orsetto lavatore ('little washer bear') in Italian, and araiguma (洗熊 (あらいぐま) 'washing-bear') in Japanese. Alternatively, only the washing behavior might be referred to, as in Russian poloskun (полоскун, 'rinser')."

There are a lot of training tips and obedience exercises people can learn from ambassador animals, zookeeper tactics or anyone working with “exotic” species. Things that can be hugely beneficial for dog & cat owners!
Like when you gave the example of a puppy trying to wriggle-free of its collar, and said that their owner would likely just “pick it up,” to remedy the situation, that right there seems like a golden opportunity to refocus and help get the puppy used to the collar. If a dog is young like that, even better. Might even take to the training so well that they don’t need to wear it at home. I know dogs and some cats wear collars in case they escape, yes… but I think a highly obedient, trained and responsive animal that is accustomed to wearing a collar could earn a break from it. Provided your property is escape-proof. 😛
I just think someone picking up a puppy who maybe isn’t used to their collar yet is a prime example of what’s wrong with many “lax” dog and cat owners! And parents of kids! 🤣 Whatever is currently happening in their “baby’s” life experience, they want to coddle and make better, rather than kill two birds with one stone, help remedy the moment but also guarantee future success. If that makes sense.

I once fell asleep in my car with the windows open and some leftover food on the passenger seat. I woke up face to face with a raccoon on my windshield, moments from climbing in for the food. I was able to get the windows rolled up in time, but I always think about what would've happened if I woke up a minute later and it had gotten in. It probably wouldn't have ended well for me lol. I imagine my initial reaction would've been to freak out, awaking to a raccoon in my car, which would've probably then caused it to freak out too and attack me.

Is he eating the seeds from that pine cone or did she hide some of his treats in it?

He's finding and eating treats shoved into the spaces in the pinecone, though he'd probably be happy to eat pine seeds as well.

Do you Worry about Rabies ?, I'm in Australia {rabies free} so I was wondering what precautions you take for both Animals & Humans. maybe a video on this would help explain especially in this epidemic {maybe there are hints in your control and precautions that are applicable to us.

I know animal wonders has made 2 videos that include a little information about Rabies, one is a video called misconceptions: cats, dogs and Rabies. She talks about some myths about Rabies in that video. There is also a video called Rabies scare about when she got bit by a mink who might have had Rabies. But I also think it would be cool for animal wonders to make a video that goes more in depth about Rabies. Great suggestion!
