      Yea but its completely unneeded. Rabbits need only hay or hay based pellets, most of veggies contain a lot of water and should be fed sparingly (leafy greens are ok but only some of them) same goes for fruit that is high in sugar and can cause very soft cecotrophes or gas problems so it should be fed only as treat and definitely not everyday (like many youtubers do for some reason)
      you can feed your rabbit some fresh herbs (dandelion, mint, basil) because thats natural for them and wont cause any trouble if you overfeed them

    I've had rabbits since I was 8, the first two lived alone without a companion. My last rabbit died of old age a few months before I moved out of my parent's house. They really wanted a new one and even though I wouldn't be around much I was able to convince them to get two. They're so happy together, always grooming each other and stuff like that. I'm so glad that they don't have to be alone.

    A preschool class for children with disabilities that I work in just got a bunny for a class pet and, while I'm glad the kids get a chance to be around animals, that poor bunny stays in a tiny cage all day, has kids screaming and grabbing at him, and is almost always showing signs of fear and distress. I just really hope that the rabbit's actual owner takes him home permanently soon.

    We had to "date" our rescue bunnies in the bathroom for 6 weeks before they accepted eachother. They absolutely hated eachother and we nearly gave up, but now they're totally in love. We had no idea it would take so long for them to become friends or that bunny bonding was such a task!

    Hey Jessi,
    When you mentioned that you needed to complete the rabbit's morning routine, I realized that you probably have a long task list each day that you can't put off for very long, especially with the large quantity of animals you care for. I know that you have some more help than you've had in the past, but with a job like this where you can't really call in sick, what happens if you or another member of your team are very sick and can't care for the animals for a time? How do you make sure the animals continue to receive the care they need?

    • @thebugbear
      @thebugbear 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      + and also, the video made me wonder how many hours do you personally spend each day taking care of the animals?

    • @leavemaealone5694
      @leavemaealone5694 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Morgan what does + mean ? I keep seeing people write that throughout different videos...

    • @thebugbear
      @thebugbear 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      It's a response that the vlogbrothers implemented in their comment section because they realized that the top comments are usually the ones with more discussion, which can be super provocative or incendiary, and not the most upvoted ones. So they asked their viewers to respond with + signs to comments they especially liked to make them more visible. It has drawbacks (like having to go through those responses to follow a conversation) but it spread to other videos and I think at least with vlogbrothers videos it's been very effective.

    I have 2 rabbits (back at my parents house, I currently study). First one, a male, lived with me since being a baby and he was neutered about two months before I introduced the other rabbit. The second one, a female comes from a rescue, I don't remember how old she is, but she was rehomed Three times before she came to live with us. The funny thing is, when I introduced them (in their new outside playplace) they fought for about 10 minutes (like, heavy kicking and angry noises involved) and then immediately bonded :) and they been together ever since (3+ years). They have their own big room to run around, the cage is always open and it's only purpose is so we can give them hay (there's 2 litter boxes in the room). Sadly ever since I moved out they became more feral because my parents don't interact with them as much, but they have each other, and big outdoor space in the summer :). But none of them ever liked being picked up and held.

Seeing happy, healthy rabbits sitting and hopping and doing their thing really warms the cracks in my heart. Thank you so much for sharing this with us Jessi! Good advises :) I just want to add some things I learned over the years of keeping rabbits. It is normal for rabbits to fight when they don't know each other. They need to establish their hierarchy first. Humping is also a normal behavior and not just for reproducing, (females do that too) it is also for dominating or annoying the other one. So it is not necessary to separate them unless it is getting bloody. Otherwise, they would just start over again later and could get even more aggressive due to boiled up tension from not reaching the other one. Putting two males together is more difficult than putting a male and a female together. Good you made sure both were neutered. Not neutered males can really injure or even kill each other.
    But in the end it mostly depends on their characters on how dominant or submissive they are. A few months ago I introduced a new female to my male rabbit (sadly his other girl died of cancer :( ), they took 24h fighting and chasing, the next morning they started cuddling and sharing food.
    Another tip, drinking bottles are not that good for rabbit necks and those bottles only give tiny drops. Solid (and heavy) water bowls are better and more natural to drink from.
    I feel a bit sorry about the orange rabbit in the tiny cage. I remember you said it can't live with other rabbits? But can it have an enclosure too, so it can run around and play? Or is it sick?
    Anyways, keep on doing your good work!

      Cheeks (the rabbit in the small cage) prefers the small cage, according to Jessi.

    • @HangryKitsune
      @HangryKitsune 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If so, then he might be sick, since rabbits are very active (especially at dawn times) and therefor need a lot of space to run around 24/7. Not moving much can cause problems with the digestive system.

    • @sweatpantsprincess3239
      @sweatpantsprincess3239 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He's a senior, so I would think he already has some health problems that just come from old age, and he knows what he wants and what works best for him. Elders of any species are much the same- grumpy, resistant to change, lethargic and nap a lot.
      Since he's preferred living there for some years, whatever sickness you think he has must not be that bad!

    • @lilliepaddle
      @lilliepaddle 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I kinda feel like that's an excuse to keep him in a small space, the cage he's in right now looks like the size a hamster would be in. I can see him hopping around quite happily, it's not like he can barely move. They don't have to make his cage massive, Just big enough so he can do more than hop around in circles. I like what Jessie is doing, it's great she's educating people about animals and their needs however I don't know if I can look at her as a transparent individual if she keeps an animal in a cage that small.

    I have learned it is always best to keep rabbit pellets away from light and air as much as possible since (just like vitamins for humans) they have essential nutrients and minerals that will degrade immensely by being exposed to sunlight ??? Just something I noticed with the big see-through container

    I love rabbits and my rabbit just died last summer but I like the larger rabbits better because I find them to be smart and chill but I find every dwarf rabbit I have met to be twitchy and aggressive which I assume has to do with inbreeding.

      Not exactly. It was because they were breed with wild rabbits to get in smallness, to create a dwarf breed. But that was about 20 years back, dwarf rabbits are now breed with other domestic rabbits, so most if well handled are fine these days.

      I've always had large rabbits, but it kind of just worked out that way. My second was from a couple that I'm pretty sure bred for meat, so that was a very big buns. She was awesome, but not so chill. I was in high school at the time and she would eat my homework to get attention and hump my leg. I definitely lived in her room, not the other way around.

    I have a question about handling kemosabe, since you said you can't hold him - what do you do when you have to pick him up (for example when he has to get checked out or treated for illnesses/injuries and such?) :)
