I am a senior citizen living on social security. Nothing that I purchase can go to waste. I put packages of baby spinach in the freezer and just take out what I need for a smoothie or to chop for an omlete. I wrap celery in foil after cutting off the end....or chop and freeze. I cut the end off a romaine head... loosen up the leaves and place in plastic containers with a paper towel...I have had it be crisp 3 weeks later. When I buy berries...I freeze them right away. Thanks for these helpful $ saving tips!
Just wanted to let you know. I watched your video a while back, and then tried out your tip for keeping lettuce and celery. All I can say is THANK YOU!! My head of lettuce stayed fresh and green for 5 entire weeks, as I shaved off a little at a time, when I made sandwiches. 5 Entire Weeks! I was struck dumb and I've been telling everyone I see about your tip! The celery tip worked to perfection too. I just can't thank you enough. Boy are you saving me money! :D
Sandra Knapp, you are a rare bird indeed! Few and far between are folks today who have the courtesy to express appreciation for something that they get for free. I very much appreciate you coming back and leaving feedback letting me know how my tip worked for you. Mike ♥
@@KitchenTipsOnline You are most welcome. I had despaired on buying lettuce because I just couldn't keep it green, crisp and fresh for more than a few days, and being the only one eating it, it was impossible for me to use much in such a short time. I don't like using the whole leaf. I prefer shaving it so it lays flat on my sandwich bread. I had tried so many other methods and none of them kept it long enough to finish even half the head until I saw your tip and tried it. Now I can't stop telling everyone about it, I am so impressed. I could not let that go without saying a hearty "thank you." Besides, I was brought up to be polite and to give credit where and when credit is due. Have a great day, and a wonderful Christmas! :D

I love these tips. I'm single and I don't go through food that fast and it ends up being thrown out. Which is a crime. It helps a lot especially bread which I don't eat fast enough, same with potatoes and most other veggies. Some stuff I can freeze such as bread and pull out when craving toast. And I've learned that there are many other foods, such as avocados you can freeze. I was skeptical but it works.

I always remove the core of the lettuce by giving it a sharp rap on the counter and pulling it out before putting it in a bag. I also use a plastic knife if I need to cut it as metal makes it go rusty. The lettuce lasts for weeks. Great show. So enjoyable to watch.

After cleaning cilantro and parsley in the salad spinner I put paper towel (usually four in a row still connected) and roll the parsley or cilantro in the paper towel and then put it in a ziplock bag. It will last WEEKS this way. Roll a little bit of parsley or cilantro into the towel then add more and roll on. Keep adding and rolling until all the cilantro/parsley is rolled up in paper towel and then into the ziploc. You will be amazed....I was !
I find that tearing lettuce into nice usable sizes , (never use a knife, scissors etc.) and then placing into a large Zip lock bag, after adding a paper towel at bottom and then at top. I take air out by simply rolling the bag to just leave minimum space for the lettuce. Just a method I use but I can make my lettuce eatable and delicious for close to a month.
Hi Terry. I do the same- tear the leaves then layer them in a container with paper towel in between. Just a question tho, do you wash them first? I wash them first and i found online that it's better if you dont until you want to eat it

I've been using the "human vacuum" method to remove air (just like you demonstrated) for 50 years, ever since one of my friends' father did that to preserve bread in its bag. Here’s a tip to help all your berries stay fresh longer! When I bring the berries (any & all berries ) home I put them in a bowl covered w/ water and add a splash of white or apple cider vinegar and let sit for ten minutes. Drain and lightly rinse, then let them sit out and air dry for a while. I then put them back into the container they came in or a glass container and put them in the fridge. I'm going to give this a try as I love salad in the summer. To keep Cilantro bunches from getting black and icky I pull as many of the lower leaves out of the bunch and put the whole bunch in a glass partially filled with water. I store this in the refrigerator with a "keep fresh" bag over the top. It lasts for weeks.
It's been some time since you said you were going to try this. How did it work for you? Do you store your lettuce this way all the time now? Thanks, Mike ☺
Thanks for the tip on cilantro!!! I stopped buying it since it went black & icky so quickly---much faster than parsley. It's hard to believe you can make cilantro last for weeks. I will try it this week.
My German Gran would put stale thick bread chunks in with the various lettuce, greens, etc. Works well. Gotta move it around, here n there, mix gently, also, change the bread chunks
It sounds like a pretty good tip that worked for your grandmother but now you know an easier way to accomplish the same thing. Thanks for your feedback, Mike 🧓
@@donjulio8807 No, you do not, because I have not had any fibers from the paper towel come off at all. Remember it is there to absorb excess moisture, so the wetness prevents fibers from separating.
Wow! I love your tips. I was so frustrated by my lettuce turning pink, then brown, before a few days in the refrigerator! I eat salad a lot because I love the crunch. But I have never been able to keep it longer than 2 days before it is just gross. Thank you So much for the solution to not having to buy lettuce every couple of days! It's been awhile since you left your original comment. Have you tried storing lettuce in the refrigerator the way I suggested it in the video? And if you did, what were the results? Thanks in advance for your feedback, Mike ☺
Haha, you're welcome. Please come back and tell everyone how it works for you. Remember it's important to leave the core in place and not to was the lettuce before you put it in the fridge. Each time you need some, remove what you need and wash it then. If you use a knife to remove the core, the lettuce thinks it's been injured and start to deteriorate right at that spot. Thanks for your feedback, Mike 🧓
Nice , I haven't had lettuce in ages because one person can't eat it all before going to waste. Now I can store 1/2 this way and pickle the other 1/2 for salads. Pickled : Place lettuce in container with lid , put half water and vinegar in container with garlic and dill , place in fridge for a few days to pickle.
I add a paper towel or two to the top and bottom of a fresh salad in a sealed container. I change the paper towels once a day and my salad will stay fresh for a week or more, whatever the ingredients.
Have you tried storing lettuce in the refrigerator the way I suggested it in the video yet? If you did, what were the results? Thanks in advance for your feedback, Mike ☺
My lettuce was starting to turn brown on outter, top leaves, I trimmed it up, lined cookie sheets with parchment between layers of lettuce. Worked perfect. Take one out, chop it up, add to casseroles, soups, whatever. Not one head lost, frozen, and used. Can't thaw it for fresh, but great for filler vegetable in other recipes.
Here's how I store my lettuce and other veggies and it works great!! After rinsing lettuce I spin it dry and break it into leaves. When I put it in a ziplock bag I add 1/2 of a paper towel to absorb the extra moisture. I do this for all lettuce. For things like peppers that I may have cut up, I also use a 1/2 of a paper towel. I keep an eye on things as I work through my fridge supplies and change the paper towel as it becomes saturated. The build up of extra moisture is what I find makes veggies go bad faster. I have had Romane lettuce stay fresh and crisp for weeks!
Tried your banana chips and tried your potato chips and both work. So far that's all I have done and I plan to read more of your tips as soon as possible. By the way I am in Columbus Ohio. thank you

@@TinekeWilliams Sorry if this sounds rude cause I don't mean it that way but I have this problem with my in-home Aide & my pots & pans. He washes them. Both inside AND out. Grease & food particles stick to the outside & if they're not washed thoroughly, they get cooked on which makes them look old real fast. I invested in a reasonably priced high end set 20 years go & because I always washed them inside & out & never allowed metal near the non-stick coating all but 1 (the 1 my first Aide was using before I caught on) still looks brand new. It's easy once you get in the habit. 😉
my sister taught me to wrap it in damp paper towel. and put in a bad the wet helps keep the lettuce crisp. and it does. however it can last a week in the fridge. what do you think..and im going to try your method and compair.
You have to keep the lettuce dry if you want it to stay fresh 5 weeks or more. In fact, in the video, I suggested that you not wash or core the lettuce before you store it, Mike 🙂
How about using the bags they have in the vegetable section for putting apples and stuff in? Could put the lettuce head in there and squeeze the air out?
I used to suck the air out of the plastic bags. But I don’t think it’s wise with Covid or really any germ transfer. Now I push the air out with my hands leaving one corner for the very last and then get that smashed out too. Thank you very much for validating my pre-Covid method. You’re great.
Great tip! For years I have had a Tupperware bowl for ages that is designed to store and save iceberg lettuce for at least 3 weeks. It’s one of those items that I never want to get rid of, cuz it really works! But, I have only used it for iceberg lettuce. Will your tip with the ziplock bag work for the pre-mixed, store bought salads?
Had to sign in just to leave a compliment! Nice video, great informative delivery;. Makes me think: Place rotting leaves from garden in a bag with green avocados should ripen them quickly; no? TY.
clavo, well then thanks for signing in and leaving a compliment. I would imagine that placing rotten leaves from the garden in a bag with avocados would introduce potential microbes and bacteria that could cause health issues. Mike ☺
Yep you are correct Barbara, Saran Wrap would work great! It's closer to what they do at the grocery store then what I demonstrated in the video. Thanks for your tip and feedback, Mike 🙂
I freeze portions of homemade stir fry's and bolognese mix in 300g containers when it is frozen I transfer into bags taking up less space. This is good if you are trying to lose weight as you have meals handy and economical for one person
New subscriber here, and I hope you can use one of my true and tried methods of preserving and storing food longer. Moisture is also the enemy of produce. I wrap my lettuce know matter what kind of lettuce in paper towels, and each time I use my lettuce I make sure my paper towel is dry on my lettuce before putting it back into the refrigerator. If you buy container lettuce, line your container with paper towels, even covering the top, and keep it changed with dry paper towels as you use it. If you cut a cucumber in half to use just part of it, wrap a paper towel over the cut end, then place in the refrigerator in container or ziplock bag. For celery I use a tall yogurt container, cut celery to fit below lid, cover 3/4 way with filtered water, set into refrigerator, change water every 5 days, this will keep your celery crispy. For bananas let ripen enough so it's not green tasting, then place in ziploc bag in your refrigerator, the banana peel will start to turn dark, but the banana inside stays fresh, this stops the banana from turning bad over night, I've had mine last 2 weeks in my refrigerator, only the peel turns dark. I also freeze my bananas out of their peels, break in half in sandwich ziploc bags, add a half of frozen banana to fruit smoothies, bananas should be just ripe, not overly ripened when freezing, or they will turn dark. Also place in deep freezer, not recommended for refrigerator/freezers where they can turn dark. Store potatoes, sweet potatoes, and onions in paper bags in cool dark room. The paper bags whisk away moisture and let the vegetables breathe. If you don't have paper bags line a laundry basket that has holes with newspapers. 👍❤💕

Thanks 🧔
Thankyou blessings

I leave my lettuce in my salad spinner. It lasts for a long time. And wrapping celery in aluminum foil keeps it fresh and crisp for a long time
Thanks for your feedback and tip. I already did a video on how to store celery using the method you described, Mike 🙂 th-cam.com/video/x7k2iO27R-k/w-d-xo.html
Thank you
You're welcome, 🙂
Someone had commented about keeping cucumbers fresh. Wrap each one individually in paper towels. Place wrapped cucumbers in a plastic bag. I use grocery store bags. Place in drawer. Works great!!! Keeps for a week or more!
Montauk Long Island, thanks for the tip! I am going to check it out, Mike ☺
i very much enjoyed the explanation you gave on the gas and how lettuce gives off just a little but when stores combine it with other veggies, it goes bad faster. i enjoy the "technicalities". thank you. =)

Thanks for making these video. Just watched you video on how to store potatoes. Live in a tiny condo with no space but have a TV cabinet that is no longer used so going to use that for storage as soon as I get it washed out. Thanks

Wholesome content right there. Like

Can you vacuum seal it?
Yep you sure can. Mike 🧔
Thank you much for your tip and feedback. Mike ☺
Thank you for sharing very good
Presentacion Cruz, Thanks, ☺
I'm skeptical but I'm going to try it!
Why don't you try it and then come back and let everyone know how it works? Thanks, Mike 🧔

That's ethylene gas.
For pre mixed salads. I put a new paper towel in the bag everyday, keeps it crunchy & lasts about 5-7 days longer than normal.
Okay, thanks for the tip. Mike
@@donjulio8807 No, you do not, because I have not had any fibers from the paper towel come off at all. Remember it is there to absorb excess moisture, so the wetness prevents fibers from separating.
I have also noticed that if I don't put my hands in the bag, only shake out what I want, it lasts longer.
I LOVE your channel, and will share with all my friends and family.

Kitchen Tips Online very nice! I do mine like this.. I put slits and roll them in grape seed oil and then roll then in 2 to different bowls of seasonings ( one Himalayan sea salt and ground pepper, one some kind. Of steak seasoning and the other whatever I feel like at the time ( can't tell all my seasonings lol and always a bit of garlic and either grill or bake them. I will be sure to try your method sometime. Thanks for the tip!

I have been coring my lettuce and celery and wrapping in aluminum foil, lasts for weeks. Also wrap fresh herbs in a damp paper towel and put in a baggie. Thanks for tips.

Homemade blue cheese dressing would be great too....
Thanks for the lettuce tips! I'll try them out as soon as I buy some fresh. What I have in the frig is about ready to walk away. :(
Haha, you're welcome.

Thanks Carolyn, I have never had pickled lettuce. I'm going to have to check it out. I appreciate the feedback, Mike 🙂
I add a paper towel or two to the top and bottom of a fresh salad in a sealed container. I change the paper towels once a day and my salad will stay fresh for a week or more, whatever the ingredients.
Steve Meserve, That's a great tip, thanks for your feedback. Mike ☺
Yes, I do this too! It works!
That's what I do. I also dry the paper towels (hang on a rail) for reuse. Less waste of everything.
helpful, thanks.

Great tip! This will save me lots of money. Thank you, Mike!
You're welcome Beth! Thank you very much for taking the time to leave feedback, I appreciate it, Mike 🙂
Informative video!! I already have been putting a head of lettuce in a ziplock bag. I'll be more diligent in evacuating the air from the bag.
Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it, Mike 🙂
Thanks for your suggestion although it seems like extra work compared to what was demonstrated in the video, Mike 🙂
Tried your banana chips and tried your potato chips and both work. So far that's all I have done and I plan to read more of your tips as soon as possible. By the way I am in Columbus Ohio. thank you
Dottie, you said banana “chips” and potato “chips”, I assume you meant banana tips and potato storage tip. And for that I thank you for your feedback. I miss Columbus, and travel back there as often as possible to visit friends. Mike

I'm going to play a drinking game where every time he says ethylene gas I take a shot.
Well I'm glad to be of service. Don't get a hangover, Mike ☺
My question is how does he keep them so spotless and shiny?
@@TinekeWilliams Sorry if this sounds rude cause I don't mean it that way but I have this problem with my in-home Aide & my pots & pans. He washes them. Both inside AND out. Grease & food particles stick to the outside & if they're not washed thoroughly, they get cooked on which makes them look old real fast. I invested in a reasonably priced high end set 20 years go & because I always washed them inside & out & never allowed metal near the non-stick coating all but 1 (the 1 my first Aide was using before I caught on)
still looks brand new. It's easy once you get in the habit. 😉
Ripper under gaslight 1888 you’re drunk already🤗🤭🤭
my sister taught me to wrap it in damp paper towel. and put in a bad the wet helps keep the lettuce crisp. and it does. however it can last a week in the fridge. what do you think..and im going to try your method and compair.
I honestly don't know the answer to that I have never tried it. I suppose it wouldn't work, Mike
I used to suck the air out of the plastic bags. But I don’t think it’s wise with Covid or really any germ transfer. Now I push the air out with my hands leaving one corner for the very last and then get that smashed out too.
Thank you very much for validating my pre-Covid method. You’re great.
Joan, you're welcome 😃 Thanks for the feedback, Mike 🧔
I have been doing this for years. I got the idea from those food saver vacuum bag machines that preserve things by removing the air and sealing it.
Well then Kelly, you are way ahead of the game. Thanks for the feedback, Mike 🙂
Mike ☺
@@KitchenTipsOnline Ahhh. k nix on the dead leaves. Thanks.

hi it looks nice if you can move paper towel so i can see ?????? thanks
I wrap my lettuce tightly in Saran Wrap. It really works.
That's a great tip thank you very much for taking the time to share. I appreciate it, Mike 🧔
