Yesterday I had a salad with a wilted piece of lettuce in it. I’ve decided I’m never going to have that experience again. Thank you for showing me how to prepare and store fresh lettuce.
Wow! Never thought of the white vinegar but I think that would also help kill any bacteria too! I've heard of people putting some lemon juice either on the lettuce or on the paper towel too. Can't remember which it was.
Thanks, I this is great info! I usually do it almost the same way, rinse, spin and store in a container with paper towel. I did not know the trick about the vinegar tho! I am guessing, hoping you can do the same with spinach? I buy spinach often in a big bbag and store it the same way. But again I didn't know about the vinegar trick. Is spinach okay with rinsing in vinegar water?
This is great to know!! Am so glad I stumbled upon your channel!! Just gained another sub! A quick question: When you say "let the lettuce soak for a few minutes..." in the vinegar & water solution, about how much time would that be? Thank you and have a great evening!!
@@justbeinghonest1 Something to consider is that plastic and ceramic knives cannot be sharpened, so in the long run, it might be cheaper to invest in a good chef’s knife. Plus it keeps waste from going into the landfill.
I cut up by lettuce and I put it in the plastic seal bags it always still gets Rusty look at and I have to throw it out I never tried rinsing it with vinegar and water and put in the paper towels I’m gonna try that but we’ll see
Whats an alternative to ziplock bag? Im trying to get into salad prep for work, figure 2-3 days worth of salad and how to store it and zI fear i would run through zip lock bags quick.
Yes, absolutely for spinach sold in a bunch. Spinach leaves are usually pre-washed and will wilt if not dried very well if you choose to wash them in thi smethod. That said, I often transfer the spinach out of the package (the leaves) into a zip bag with a paper towel to absorb moisture and try to keep them fresh longer.
My lettuce starts turning purpleish, 3/4 days in the week after i cut it :( I think my mistake is that i soak it vinegar, salt and water for an hour or more. I should soak for lesser time, right? I airdry my leaves under the fan for a while, before cutting em. Also, is vinegar + cold water a better soaking method?
Spring mix is already pre-washed when you buy it from the store. However, once openened, i recommend placing a paper towel in the bag to absorb moisture.
Wtf Laura how come you have such amazing skin. Woman you glowing brighter than my future. Maybe skin care tip vid next? ;p Thanks for this vid tho really needed it
I haven't recorded a video on them, but I have some articles on keeping celery and carrots fresh here: www.momables.com/store-carrots/ www.momables.com/keep-celery-fresh/
My salad always becomes soggy after 1 and half days. I did exactly but no vinegar. I didn't buy it. I threw the soggy lettece out. It's so frustrating. I am so sad.
No!!! Don’t Do It!!!! I did this yesterday, and tonight I can’t fine ONE piece of lettuce that isn’t rusted. Ruined my entire head of lettuce by adding white vinegar. I’ll never do a white vinegar rinse on my lettuce again.
The most common reason for browning on lettuce is a chemical process known as oxidation due to the metal in your knife or overly handling the lettuce giving the leaves micro-tears. The vinegar is used to wash it and kill bacteria and should be fully rinsed. Excess soaking, not fully drying the leaves, and improper storage + excess humidity can also cause lettuce to brown fast once chopped.
if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all .. really. How miserable that sounded....seriously. I hope you find some happiness somewhere, sounds like you need some.

I'm so glad it was helpful! It is a 4quart container -i find that the 4qt and 5qt fit store bought ones great.
MOMables - Laura Fuentes thanks so much! What brand is it? I’m trying to find it online. If you can post a link that would be great😃

Right??
How do you clean the salad spinner? How often do you need to clean it?
I simply rinse it after each use sometimes with warm soapy water and sponge.
Do you have anything to show how you can prep and store tomatoes? Can I slice them and store them to save time during the week for sandwiches?
Yes, I have a whole blogpost about prepping and storing tomatoes, you can check it out here: bit.ly/storetomatoes
questions:
1. what do you mean by „for a week“? 4, 5, 6 or 7 days?
2. do you exchange the paper towels and if yes, how often?
tx, @
7 days and no exchange of paper towels.
Thanks miss now I want a white salad knife like the one U got
It’s a simple plastic knife. Cheap too!

What advice can you give me for keeping cilantro fresh?
cilantro, i take the bunch, trim the ends, and keep fill a glass with water and keep them in my fridge standing up (like a "vase") for the bunch.
You can wash ,dry and steam it for a few minutes till colour changes.then store it in ziplock back in the freezer

Yes

Thank u my dear.. just did it 🌹🌹🥰
I never thought to clean the lettuce since its already got many layers. I always take the outer layer off tho.
You'll be surprised how dirty (dirt, bugs) inner leaves can be. But then again, I know a lot of people who don't..
This was great ty! What type of vinegar do you use and how much?
Simple vinegar, you can find all the details here: bit.ly/lettucefridge

You don't need to "soak" lettuce. just wash it/rinse it well. They like moisture but not too much!
@momables Do you have to rinse the lettuce under fresh water once you have soaked it?
Give or take yes. Especially if you have a lot of dirt.
Thank you, very informativ e

Will juice from backyard lemons do as well as white vinegar ?
Even washing lettuce in just water well will work.
You can wrap in foil and it keeps for weeks

Before eat should i rinse with water or just directly eat it?
I always wash my 🥬 before eating it; unless it’s been pre-washed already.
I like spring mix would this work for that lettuce?
Spring mix is already pre-washed when you buy it from the store. However, once openened, i recommend placing a paper towel in the bag to absorb moisture.
do you remove the air if using airlock bag
Yes. I typically flatten out the air out of the bag. Happy prep!
What about three head of lettuce can you
one, two, three, five... I prep them the same.
Hi laura and we are fuentes family.. Aha!!!
what if i dont have the salad spinner??
Large bowl will do, rinse by hand, air dry.
