SEGA @ E3 '99

- 1999 was a pretty exciting time for Sega fans. The company was emerging from a tumultuous period of dwindling market shares and fortunes to embark on the launch of, what was hoped to be its savior, the Dreamcast console.
Sega were putting their all behind the Dreamcast, taking into account the mistakes they had made with past hardware launches. The Dreamcast would boast innovative features such as the VMU (Visual Memory Unit) and a modem for online gaming, be easy to program for, be backed by a multi-million dollar advertising campaign and most importantly, play host to some amazing games including Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur.
These recordings from the then television channel, [.tv], take a look at Sega's E3 showing in 1999 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The E3 Expo is the world's premiere trade show for computer and video games and related products.
These recordings were originally made several years ago on VHS so sound and video quality may be degraded.
I do not own, nor stake claim to, any copyrights related to the material in this video.
Sega also had financial issues by 1999. They could have survived but they didn't =/ it wasn't the PS2
Someone said somewhere (I know vague and no reference) that Sega had no choice once Microsoft announced Xbox since they were getting chips from them. Not sure how true that is. The fact Peter moore was involved with Xbox later def shows some behind the curtain connections.
Why oh why did the Dreamcast have to die?
Ask Microsoft! ^^
Darksynbios .I. What? Microsoft had nothing to do with the Dreamcast dying. It was because it was too easy to pirate the games. That was the Dreamcast's major flaw and it was the straw that broke the camel's back. It's too bad to that thieves had to kill one of the greatest consoles of all time. What a bull crap thing to do to Sega for real.
fireheartis1 also because it had no DVD drive, and the PS2 just appealed to more people.
***** DVD playback would have being a trump card in the DC's hardware profile. DVD was an ever emerging technology at the time and one that is still strong to this day. Had SEGA the financial means to include DVD playback in the DC then it could have helped the company shift more units thus prolonging the lifespan of the console. From memory, early Japanese sales of the PS2 console were largely due to its ability to play DVDs as the initial software line-up wasn't particularly great. The omission of a DVD drive in the DC hardware was not the deciding factor in the consoles failure but a contributing factor in my opinion. As you say though, it was still one hell of a games console ;-)
*****, apparently almost everyone cared, because THEY STOPPED BUYING THEM....
6:16 there was gonna be a castlevania game on the dreamcast ; - ;
I remember reading about the dreamcast in Time for Kids magazine at school and all the kids talking about how powerful the console would be. I was so excited when my cousin gave me his dreamcast after only a year of owning it! And then there was Shenmue.
was E3 even broadcast on TV back then?
back then was an amazing time to be a sega fan. if only shenmue had come out on the ps2 it would of been a smash hit it never had a chance on the xbox and i think the first one did ok it sold somethink like 1.5 million and not meany dreamcast game's sold over a million.
awesome video man keep them coming :D
Yes but that's only part of a long list of reasons. The huge debt from the Sega CD, 32X, and the Saturn. The lost trust from retailers and consumers due to them killing off 2 add ons and a console very early (Saturn was barely 2 years old before dieing). And the lost trust of third party devs after the Saturn Day incident. It also didn't help that Sega's CEO's had lost interest in the hardware market by that point in time. Had Sega never made those mistakes, the playstation would have died.
Basically if both Nintendo and Sega hadn't made the mistakes they made such as Nintendo's 3rd party policy preventing devs from releasing more the 5 games a year and making the N64 a cartridge based console instead of CD based. And Sega's decision to release the Sega CD and 32X with poor support and the Saturn launch. Sony would have had some trouble as the PS1 was not port friendly and was a mess to code for like the Saturn and was weaker then the 64 bit N64 not to mention being the new guy.
HOW COULD A CHEAP DVD COULD DEFEAT A GAME CONSOLE THAT HAS ON LINE MODE WTF????
Not looking good.... First 10 seconds in you see Scott Backula, yikes.
"with a 128 bit processor we'd expect the games to look better but what do they play like?"
a question i think that was last asked in 1999
shenmue great game
SEGA😆
And addition to that, the system had no security against Piracy. Gamers could simply burn a game to a CD and play it without any mods. This discovery really hurt. And also didn't help that the head CEO at the time wanted the company to go software and back out of the hardware market.
WoW!! Great vid mate - more please :D E3 back then was awesome - thanks for the upload ....really is a shame the DC never took off an awesome machine & still love it :D
E3 wasn't always about JUST video games.
This just screams late 90s
i don't remember the shahua scene in Shenmue, and i play'd it a couple of weeks ago...
Maybe if Disney buy SEGA...maybe they can make a comeback...
SEGA FENIX, is a cool name :D
So clean
Castlevania isn, t release for dc
Zio Gio yeah . Too bad it was canceled
Wish Sega hand't run out of money... if they could have held on for a year or two more (which I feel money was the biggest reason they could: advertising), who knows how things might have been different. With some advertising and more time, maybe they could have gotten a little 3rd party support. It might not have changed everything, but I wish it could have been that way.
Interesting to say the least!
There was a lot of sonic and shenmue parts that i hadn`t seen before! Probably cause i didn`t finish any of the 2 :)!
Thanks for sharing these gems!
Cheers!
Sega also didn't have the money to compete, had they had a lot of money like Microsoft they might have been able to rebuild themselves and come back, at least over time.
Did we ever get castlevania for dreamcast??? I don't remember that game
WOW...Dreamcast has better looking graphics than Wii U
Even better than PS3 and X360...
@@marciobbl lmao. No
6:13 Sadly this game was cancelled
So much hope and optimism...shame it ended they way it did. :(
Opponents are everywhere.
