      It's so nice to get away from all the worries and spend some time with family. And the food is always amazing! We were expecting loads of rain today, but it didn't reach us, unfortunately 😔 Thank you, beds are slowly getting ready for new crops. Let's just hope that temperatures go down 🙏

    What a relief that the rain has started again, after such a dry summer. I'm praying you get rain each day now - just enough so you don't have to water, but not too much it's a storm. Thank you for another serene video. x

    Beautiful garden. Beautiful life. Tough summer with so little rain. I look forward to seeing more videos. I am in the western United States. Very dry here too. Next year I will retire in Umbria and I look forward to a big change in my life. Where are you from originally? All the best to you and I will continue to follow you.

      Hello 👋 Thank you for being happy with us about the rain. We wish it would rain loads this winter! We always loved rain and now more than ever! People don't know the real value of it until they start growing their own vegetables.
      We are smiling because summer is getting towards the end...hopefully 😆 Simetimes it might last until December.
      Warm wishes from Sicily ❤️

    Great family gathering. That is something I think we should all strike for.
    Everyone helping to prepare the meal - nothing purchased from the fast food restaurants.
    Love the outdoor washing & drying stations.
    Do you collect any rain in barrels or a cistern?
    I am guessing the next phase of your development would be to have a small greenhouse to develop/grow your own seeds.
    I think many of the commercial seed supplies are GMO in some way.

    • @SomethingLikeThis1
      @SomethingLikeThis1  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's always nice to have family gatherings like this ❤️ It's something very special and joyful!
      We have a couple of water tanks, but they are not very large. We would like to install something bigger one day. We actually build a greenhouse but it was a bit unsustainable for larger scale. That's why we decided to give our seeds to the nursery. We usually buy our own seeds and provide it to them as most of the things they don't even have. It's very convenient for us this way 😉

    Good seeing you both enjoying maling pasta and eating with the family. Would have liked some subtitles on what was being said and what food you were enjoying. I thought you were gonna cry with the expression of joy on your face when it rained Brigita very touching to see you appreciate the things people over here moan about 😊

    • @SomethingLikeThis1
      @SomethingLikeThis1  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's always so nice to spend some time with the family. I didn't add subtitles as it was just random conversations, and I wanted people to feel like I did when I moved to Sicily - trying to understand what's going on 😆
      Well, I was tearing up when it started to rain. It was such a relief, it's like that rain washed all those months of hardship and promised new beginnings. People don't apreciate things they have daily. I didn't like too much rain either when I lived in England, and now I miss it so much. You have to lose it first, and then you start to appreciate it ❤️

    Ciao da Kansas City, my name is Lina and I was born and raised in Sicily, Province of Ragusa, I have been living in the US for 30 years but I plan on coming back when I go in pensione. My heart breaks to hear that our beautiful island is becoming a desert. Since ancient times Sicily was thought of the land predilected by the gods, fertile and sunny. The situation that has evolved during the last 2 years is a tragedy. I read the a reservoir of ancient water was found under the ibleian valley, I truly hope that they don't wait to long to get the water to all who need it.

      @SomethingLikeThis1  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, Lina. We hope it will get better before you retire. But so far prognosis for Sicily looks rather sad and scary. We hope that Italian government will get a bit more incolved into saving Sicily and making sure that people are not staying without water. Sicily is such a beautiful land which should be preserved and valued. Best wishes from Sicily ❤

    Yayyyyy ! You finally got rain❤ so happy for you guys!!!
    I loved watching all the ladies making the pasta. A beautiful dance of rolling fingers. Two stirring the same pot. Discussing the best way to do it. Not a competition but working in tandem. Hahaha You guys work well together as a couple. We bicker when working together. So stressful! !
    Thanks for sharing your life the good and the difficult 😊

      Thank you for being happy with us about the rain ❤️ It was little, but it gave us hope for autumn starting a bit earlier. So we are working hard to plant autumn crops.
      Pasta making is such a wonderful experience! And it's so delicious 😋
      It's taught to work together, but we make it. Usually, we go to the opposite sides of the garden 😆 I am sorry to hear that you find it stressful to work with your partner. I think it takes time to adjust. We are getting better with time.

    Is this your rain the one which caused the famous yacht to sink a few days ago?
    Here in the Southwest of Ireland, no real summer after mid June, currently rain, rain, and more rain. If not just grey sky, not enough sunlight to ripen the tomatoes in my greenhouse.

    • @SomethingLikeThis1
      @SomethingLikeThis1  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The yacht incident happened one day before.

    • @SomethingLikeThis1
      @SomethingLikeThis1  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @rickallen6378 Yes, he is. A couple of years ago him and another dog were trying to establish who is alpha male. They almost killed each other. It was a very stressful time for us, so that was the best solution we came up with. We have tried to take other dogs to stay with him, but unfortunately, he started being aggressive with them, too. They are still very aggressive with each other when they get close.

    I feel your pain when the rain comes but not enough. We all have to learn the lessons of land degradation and desertification from others who have successfully returned the environment to how it should be. Forget about desalination plants. They are far too costly, only last 3-4 years, abandoned in Sicily after 5 years bc they rust out and can't supply sufficient water even to one Comune, as output is just 100 litres per second. Learn from Loess Plateau China., Ethiopia Sustainable Land Management Programme, Paani Foundation India projects to restore the watersheds. Drought is not nature's fault. It is the fault of ppl not understanding how to work within the bounds of nature.

    • @SomethingLikeThis1
      @SomethingLikeThis1  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The issue is our land that has been tractored for years. And now we are trying to improve it, but we have limited resources, and that is tough. We have limited power as well as we are trying to live from soil and make our garden market thrive. It's not easy to do much during this crazy heat when your body is tired after a few months of continuous sweating. There are many techniques that we know and we want to implement, but sometimes we are just running on empty. We planted trees and we want to make food forest. But we can only plant a few trees a year as they need some water during the first years of their lives and it's been difficult even that. So we are really trying to do our best and we are still working on many ideas but believe us when we say that it's tough!

    • @yvanapantino273
      @yvanapantino273 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SomethingLikeThis1 Water should always be the first priority before planting anything. Unfortunately, most farmers can't let go of old, out dated, unsustainable methods of farming. Farmers are doing far more labour than necessary because they won't change how they do things. No wonder they feel exhausted. Humans are supposed to use their intelligence to design farm systems that save them labour. Why not grow more perennial plants for example which just keep coming back year after year with very little work involved? Why have only one crop when you could have guilds of plants which help each other, growing vertically above your annuals? Stop weeding. The soil dries out when you remove their roots. Both you and your neighbours and everyone in your water catchment area, really need to get together and decide what to do regarding the whole watershed. Pay a consultant who has a good track record in restoration of watersheds, if necessary and split the cost between everyone to make it achievable. Your situation is challenging but if you apply your intelligence and study what others have done around the world, you can create a Garden of Eden with an abundance of water.
