I really admire his performance. As a drummer who was also forced to perform in front of a crowd with little to no rehearsal in a genre uncommon to himself I can understand his pressure, but of course his performance is out of this world. Definitely made his dad proud!
Fun fact, this song was composed by Hank Levy whose charts are mostly in odd meter. He was my high school band directors jazz professor at Towson University and has original copies of whiplash and other charts. So glad that his legacy lives on and Nic's drumming completely captures what it's like to learn this chart. Struggle till you figure it out
Bruh, As someone who played and learned through jazz I am suprised by the amount of drummers that have a fear for jazz. And I will admit, this was not the whiplash I was thinking when pressing the video. Yet laughed so hard after his jazz comment. Congrats and very impressive at what he came up with and played.
Bro I feel that pain as a saxophone player who, in seventh grade, was part of my high school’s jazz band and this was what we played. This was one hell of a journey lmao

Oh man, this video is so valuable for a drummer. Less is more. I tend to overplay, a lot, but being a drummer is leading and part of leading is learning how and when to step aside. Love this video! Keep em coming drumeo!
This was fascinating to watch and hear. His playing, especially on the intro, immediately sounded like "prog rock drummer's take on a jazz song." Part of it is the tonality of his kit (and the juge number of toms and cymbals), but so much of it was about his touch. It was heavy. Which makes sense, obviously. The tom fills could not have ever come from a jazz drummer, but the comfort with the time signature could not have ever come from a straight rock drummer.
For me it is crazy to see Nic Collins count a 7/8 beat, since his farther, Phil Collins, is the one who is famous for this time signature. Phil made this odd time into his trademark on The Cinemashow on Selling England by the Pound..... my nr. 1 track by Genesis..... And Nic,- fantastic video,- I love it. Greetings from Denmark.
Nic is the man! He's got a great ear it seems to me, especially with a step into the somewhat unknown. As they say in hockey country up here, he's a tough customer. Keep him coming back! You all kick ass there.
I always thougth Phil Collins was great drummer and his son is too, i didn't know his son was drummer too, very nice, remind me many good songs from my childhood in the 80's, i always like Phil Collins songs as child.
Absolutely blown away...so well done! I love to play the drums, and watching Phil's son bust out a groove like this...makes me want to get my boys out on the kit big time!
It's unfair. This is the hardest song they've had a drummer play in these sessions. And Nic is still unexperienced. Great work! And close to the original. Gutsy kid!
Unbelievable!!! So amazing! I honestly preferred his version, although it was kinda louder than it needed to be on some parts. Such a talented drummer!!!
Funny, they gave Larnell Lewis the easiest goddamn song to play, but they gave Nic something rather complex. By take 3 he arranged something very cool. You nailed it, bud!
I mean, it would be kind of hard showing Larnell something he hasn't heard that's not pop or pop rock music. His knowledge of music in general is absurd, specially jazz.
"Sometimes drumers should learn to shut up" - that 3rd version with all the drums is fire! btw Nic´s arrangements does not sound out of place it has respect for the feel of the song IMO, so i like it. Usually when people want to impress with prowess is when they damage a song with some out of place drumming
In the original the drummer sits back and supports the horns, making it sound much more relaxed. Nic’s drums push the track along so much so that it become a drum-centred track and the horns support him.

I really admire his performance. As a drummer who was also forced to perform in front of a crowd with little to no rehearsal in a genre uncommon to himself I can understand his pressure, but of course his performance is out of this world. Definitely made his dad proud!
I love these kinds of videos! Huge respect to all the drummers going out of their comfort zones.
Totally nailed it! I loved the one handed snare rolls he was doing.
These keep better and better the more I find. This is wicked for such little time prep.
Struggle till you figure it out
Nic's use of crash cymbals during the main theme parts (where the original doesn't have drums) was great actually
Nic is a super musical drummer. Just like Phil played every kind of music. Bravo Nic!!
In awe. Hands down, the most impressive one I've seen yet.
And he is just a kid. This guy is awesome. Definitely the hardest song ive seen in these videos. Excellent job!!!
What a sport. Great kid.
This was sooooo impressive! The hardest task, and he managed it beautifully. I love what he did with it.
Quite MY tempo!
That’s why I love this series - you can see the whole creative process unfolding.
By the third take he was owing it by his own mind.Mad skills. And what was really good for him is that he understood the lesson of it.Musicians never stop learn with no exceptions.Mad skills though!
Oh man, this video is so valuable for a drummer. Less is more. I tend to overplay, a lot, but being a drummer is leading and part of leading is learning how and when to step aside. Love this video! Keep em coming drumeo!
Overplay everything when practicing, then shore it up on stage.
I honestly like nic's version a lot. He had great timing and didn't stick out. Great job
What a humble dude.. Hats off and kudos. You nailed it.
It is so lovely to listen to people so passionate about music and rhythm
This was fascinating to watch and hear. His playing, especially on the intro, immediately sounded like "prog rock drummer's take on a jazz song." Part of it is the tonality of his kit (and the juge number of toms and cymbals), but so much of it was about his touch. It was heavy. Which makes sense, obviously. The tom fills could not have ever come from a jazz drummer, but the comfort with the time signature could not have ever come from a straight rock drummer.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree I guess :)
The time signature is surely a curveball
For me it is crazy to see Nic Collins count a 7/8 beat, since his farther, Phil Collins, is the one who is famous for this time signature. Phil made this odd time into his trademark on The Cinemashow on Selling England by the Pound..... my nr. 1 track by Genesis..... And Nic,- fantastic video,- I love it. Greetings from Denmark.
Nic is the man! He's got a great ear it seems to me, especially with a step into the somewhat unknown. As they say in hockey country up here, he's a tough customer. Keep him coming back! You all kick ass there.
I'm really starting to like his playing and attitude. After watching him play he is a solid drummer and you can tell he has worked hard. much respect!
You can usually tell when somebody’s going to nail it when they say they’re going to be absolutely terrible. Humility is the Mark of a great musician.
Word!
Nic did a FABULOUS job with this!! He’s so genuine. I so enjoyed this video!!❤
He did magnificently on that. It definitely has a funk feel. Goes to show how versatile drummers actually are and how key to the songs.
That third take was absolute FIRE
I always thougth Phil Collins was great drummer and his son is too, i didn't know his son was drummer too, very nice, remind me many good songs from my childhood in the 80's, i always like Phil Collins songs as child.
Absolutely blown away...so well done! I love to play the drums, and watching Phil's son bust out a groove like this...makes me want to get my boys out on the kit big time!
rock/prog drummers always have a really distinct stadium-like signature, it's fun to watch
It's unfair. This is the hardest song they've had a drummer play in these sessions. And Nic is still unexperienced. Great work! And close to the original. Gutsy kid!
That was great and Nic seems like a really nice guy!! Well done!
Dude's a fast learner. Well done, Nic!
Larnell played twice. Chick's Pain first, then Enter Sandman,
Chick's Pain was definitely hard, but was in his wheel house.
The first time Larnell was on was crazy tough. But was his style so wasn't too bad for him
Forget the song tho
I mean, it would be kind of hard showing Larnell something he hasn't heard that's not pop or pop rock music. His knowledge of music in general is absurd, specially jazz.
They gave him a song out of his comfort zone... Or they tried.
Toca fantástico este joven baterista. Imagino que tiene por delante aún mucho por mejorar...🤔...saludos desde Chile 🇨🇱 a Nic y a phil...
"Sometimes drumers should learn to shut up" - that 3rd version with all the drums is fire! btw Nic´s arrangements does not sound out of place it has respect for the feel of the song IMO, so i like it. Usually when people want to impress with prowess is when they damage a song with some out of place drumming
His version is absolutely amazing!
In the original the drummer sits back and supports the horns, making it sound much more relaxed. Nic’s drums push the track along so much so that it become a drum-centred track and the horns support him.
I think that is from the genre he is familiar with, still great drum work imo
