    The human SS guy is addressing the alien as "sir", staying very respectful and all... but he actually outranks the alien, judging by the collar tabs.

    This scene struck a nerve with my dad back when it first aired. The Waffen SS officer went on uninterrupted with his triad on how how righteous and just his cause was. It was actually some great acting and great writing. But my dad became visibly angry when seeing this and shouted "You are WRONG!" at the TV. It was kind of weird.

    When he says "the Romans fell to our ancestors..." I remember being taught that the Romans fell from multiple groups of barbarians. Essentially he is saying civilized cultures are weak and the Nazis are strong because they are uncivilized.

      They don't always think too deeply.

    • @sojourner.
      @sojourner. ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They fell to multiple groups of barbarians that were ethnically germanic, before German was a unified term. His point was that a civilized society that sits idly and allows percieved enemies to continue to exist will eventually fall to them. He implied the contrast with Nazi Germany is that they are proactive in exterminating all percieved enemies, legitimate perception or otherwise, therefore in theory removing the chance of falling to outside forces. This is a fairly compelling argument that makes him a well-written villain. It is also why the Nazis lost the war in real life- they made too many enemies, and it is why the Hirogen here lose in this episode. It is a fatal flaw.

    • @wiiu7640
      @wiiu7640 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@sojourner. Yes and no. You are right he mentions it in the context of not letting barbarians overrun your society, but he views German ancestry as sophisticated similar to how Britain views their ancestry as sophisticated. In reality, his ancestors were a group of barbarians who were savages and nothing like the sophisticated Germans in World War II along with many other sophisticated countries. This brings the point that perhaps the Nazis were savages in a sophisticated country.

    In STTOS - they did things a lot with Nazi's - because they had all these Nazi costumes and sets like the '40's and old cars - so it was cheaper for them to make those episodes than something where they had to make it all look like it was from the 23rd Century.

      The Hirogen take over the ship and use its holodecks to run simulations where they hunt the mind-controlled Voyager crew, to satisfy their instinctive need. The Hirogen leader, who sees the holodeck technology as a way to steer his race away from being sparse nomadic groups driven by lust for prey, toward becoming a powerful and cultured civilisation, strike a deal with Captain Janeway. In return for Voyager's holodeck technology, the Hirogen will leave the ship and its crew alone.
      However, the Hirogen subordinate, who already questions his superior's unusual approach and sees the simulations as distasteful and inauthentic, is surprised to receive sympathetic encouragement to rebell and to be true to his nature from a programmed holographic Nazi soldier, who is a representation of a dark past of the predominant species of the Voyager crew, who are offering a way to lead the Hirogen away from theirs.

      Regardless of whether one agrees with this character or Nazism, the scene and dialog (whether it meant to or not) did an excellent job of demonstrating what motivated German National Socialists (Nazis) at that time. They did not see (no pun intended) themselves as villians or evil, but as warriors fighting for the lives and future of their nation.
