I’ve been making this for over 20 years, but use regular apple juice and red hots. I have an old Corningware stove top percolator and put the candies in the basket. Also, I’ve used “Hot Tamales” cinnamon candies when I couldn’t find Red Hots, so I think any cinnamon candy would work. This is a Christmas treat I dearly love! Thanks for sharing your recipe! I was just scrolling through the comments to see if there was an alternative to red hots. I couldn’t find any so I bought hot tamales hoping they would work. Gonna make it tonight for our Christmas Eve movie. Which is “Muppet Christmas Carol” of course. My children are adults now but we still get together and watch it. Never grow up. Perfect timing! I was just sitting here after a big family get-together, reminiscing about my childhood Christmases (as one does when one is blessed with grandkids) and I remembered all the adults in the family gathered in the kitchen getting ladles of this amazing smelling drink into mugs. I'm fairly sure they used wine, as none of us kids were allowed any. Now I have the recipe to make for my own family that the kiddos can enjoy too. Thank you so much, Tom and Melissa!
I love Wassail! I make it in my Keurig with K-cups of Apple Cider and then add a dry Wassail spice mix I ordered from Amazon. Very good! But I’ll bet yours is awesome! Next party or get-together I will have try your recipe!
I couldn't find red hots in three different stores. I used Hot Tameles which has the same spicy cinnamon taste. They dissolved pretty well and i strained out the little that was left. Tastes great. Thanks. Linda from Texas

I love apple cider and this looks delicious! Our Walmarts and Walgreens carry the Red Hots in the 5.5 ounce Theater boxes. Those are usually located by the single candy bars, and maybe at the checkout lanes. Just thought maybe some of your viewers might be able to find some at these places.

For a person who would like this with less sugar, just use the 100% apple cider and use real spices, cinnamon stick, whole clove, the apple cider is plenty sweet.
We are at 30% temperature at the moment. So will try when we are back to winter. Usually my family does the Spiced Wine every winter. We have a couple of winter family get together. lol here it is 89.7 degrees Fahrenheit in Canada here today. To us that is warm and sunny here. We had a bit of rain but no snow yet. This drink does look good though. We did enjoy the 12 days of Xmas too.

My mother and I each made this recipe. When she told me that she thought there was too much cinnamon, I halved the recipe. The glycern coating on the Red Hots left a disgusting flotsam on the cider. Just make a cup of the Alpine instant drink. Tastes just as good and much less clean up.

We've always made it with a clove decorated orange and a couple cinnamon sticks but this sounds easy. Red hots also nice added to homemade apple sauce - pretty pink color.
Last summer I canned pickled cucumber rings which uses Red Hots. My husband scoured all the grocery stores in all the surrounding towns to no avail. He finally found them at Walgreens!!

You just have to be careful that they don't scorch since they don't tend to dissolve completely. But it sounds like you handled it perfectly!
