That was some really interesting things I never expected to see. The cannonball mario seemed like a cool power up. Maybe one day they can actually use that idea. You're right! The ones with the longer face are definitely Luigi. While there may also be some Mario mixed in. Thank you for watching and commenting. :)
Regarding the “circus” theme, don’t forget that SMW introduced the angled pipes that literally shoot Mario with a cannon shot sound. Maybe those pipes were originally designed as cannons and that power up/suit would go along with it, and they just repurposed them as pipes by changing the sprites but kept the entire mechanic, including the sound effect.
It does make you wonder if the various world map screens represented placeholders or whether or not there was ever a sense of progression established before the game was refined from SMB3 to SMW. I would assume perhaps a majority of the levels present in the final build were implemented in some limited form or were at least always planned to be developed, but it makes you wonder what other directions the narrative might have taken in 1989 during the SMB3 phase of development. If Nintendo's internal development is anything like Sega's, who knows how many level ideas were conceived and possibly saw some function before being scrapped(see Rock Zone/Wood Zone/Hidden Palace Zone/Genocide City Zone from Sonic 2 or R2 from Sonic CD). Anyway, thanks for consolidating the leaked info on SMW's beta assets. It's been difficult for me to follow.

The weird looking beta Yoshi is interesting because the baby Yoshi in the final game does resemble that original Yoshi sprite. I have been wondering why baby Yoshi looked a little off my entire life and now I know!
6:52 The golden Yoshi here is in the final game. You can obtain it only using Gameshark codes and it has every Yoshi ability (Stomping, Flying, and fireball). If you grab a different color Yoshi it uses that Yoshi's abilities instead.
maybe the islands appeared as you progressed in the game? and when you end a castle a bridge to other side would be opened and you'd be able to continue into the story, and in a part of the lake the bowser world would appear?
The leaf did NOT turn mario into the full Tanuki, you had to find a Tanuki suit power up to do that (either via a mushroom house, or via a giant ? block similar to the hammer bros suit). And the Tanuki suit actually had a special use other than just being able to fly - Pressing Down and B turned you into a statue which prevented enemies from hurting you at all.
There must have been something strange about the way I said it, because you're not the first person to bring this up, but the fact that the raccoon suit is not the same as the tanooki suit, yet in modern Mario games picking up a leaf for some reason gives Mario the appearance of tanooki mario is the point that I was trying to make. I'm not a fan of Nintendo making that change.
11:50 - The Big Coin sprite from those magazine screenshots are in this lot, too. 14:16 - "Bunbun" is, indeed, the Japanese name for Boom-Boom. However, Reznor is *"Buibui,"* another onomatopoeic word. I s'pose the implication could go either way. 15:19 - You had me at "Wily Machine." 👍
Those sprites at 5:57 are fascinating. I personally never liked the official design of small Mario in Mario World: it always seemed deformed to me. But these sprites at 5:57 are more resembling of the design from Mario 3, I like it
The cannonball Mario sprite is interesting. My guess is it would have been used when Mario is launched from a pipe rather than when he has cape, you even get the cannon sound too. Also fun fact, On/Off blocks did not exist in vanilla SMW. On/Off switches did but were only used to toggle line guides, blocks that change state based on the switch position were made for Romhacks. Nintendo stole the idea and added it into Mario Maker. The On/Off block you showed looked more like an early P Switch anyway.
I think those big sharks are supposed to be the prototype Lunge Fish from Yoshi’s Island, and the dinosaur Koopa Troopa is supposed to be a new variation of Boom-Boom that uses the beta Reznor wheel!

There are some sprites in the leaked files of Super Mario World that are never seen anywhere else, before the leak. Not even in promotional material, for good reason. I can't recall what it is because I am unfamiliar with who it was supposed to represent but from what I gathered, it was some male character from an anime series not related to Mario at all within the sprite sheets (maybe a placeholder?). There is a full sprite sheet of it. I think there's another separate male character, unused as well (from maybe the same series?) within those same images. Furthermore... some of these sprites of one of the said characters are almost completely naked except for some naked sprites with a tanooki headwear. With the belly button and front bit exposed and all. There's also some sprites of what seem to be Mario and Luigi flipping off the player. Look it up if you don't believe me. I guess the employees at Nintendo needed to joke around during work hours.
13:25 Hm, aside from the Blarrg-looking enemies, here also are different end-points for tracks, a shark enemy, a early version of Iggy, and an enemy at the bottom that appears to only be a trace before it got scrapped.
Wait maybe I’m making a connection out of nothing but isn’t there a sprite in the Yoshi island (specifically the Super Donkey stuff) files where the helmeted character takes it off looks like Mario? Maybe that’s related to the helmet Mario here? Idk
Corrections: Weird how you talk about the leaf giving him a full tanooki outfit _before_ when that was actually the tanooki outfit powerup before. Leaf always gave him just the tail and ears. The sprite for a regular piranha plant head was always in the final game as well as a fully functional piranha plant object; its stem was messed up graphically though. The "big coin" you said was a beta dragon coin is just a regular coin. I don't think they'd put 4 dragon coins next to each other.
Thank you for watching and commenting! I think there may be a few misunderstandings here. I was trying to compare how in Mario 3 the leaf does not give Mario a full tanooki appearance, unlike in the modern games where when Mario collects a leaf he often gets the tanooki suit as well (However, NSMB2 actually kept just the tail and ears which I like). It's confusing because there is also a tanooki suit in SMB3 which is not identical to raccoon Mario. And SMW does indeed have the upwards piranha head graphic in the game still. This graphic is also used for the jumping piranha plants. The normal upward piranha sprite goes unused though, and attempting to insert it into the game will cause it to have a glitched appearance due to the stem no longer existing in the graphics data of the final version.
Why does Nintendo always use SMB3 for place holders and bases? they've put sound clips from the ground theme in games and even used SMB3 Mario Maker 2 style for a base for the 3D world style
I can't fucking believe the Evel Knieval mario suit was real this whole time holy fuck Back when I was an early teen just getting familiar with SMW romhacking, I remember a few YT vids this one guy made of this weird rom hack thing that was supposed to look like it was showcasing some super-duper-hidden secret level that contained a message from the devs and a powerup that would give mario that same helmet & cape. We all just thought it was a hoax back then. That just makes seeing this absolutely surreal
When you upscale pixelart you should use "Nearest Neighbor" as upscaling mode so you dont get those blurry visuals that looks like someone prited it out on a printer from 1980s. Just a tip to look into. Other then that like the video and its very nicely structured.
Thank you for the tip! In this case, the video editor stretched some things automatically, and I didn't realize it in preview window. Never would I have imagined that thousands of people would end up watching it, haha!

Every copy of Super Mario World is personalized. ;)
?
16:40 bowser looks like he's ready to vibe check mario
9:12 that enemy on the right is a beta Larry Koopa. Apparently, Iggy and Larry were meant to leap around judging by the downward foot frame.
Bowser one is too damn cool
13:25
Hm, aside from the Blarrg-looking enemies, here also are different end-points for tracks, a shark enemy, a early version of Iggy, and an enemy at the bottom that appears to only be a trace before it got scrapped.
It's the laser suit.
we just gonna wait until someone make a romhack with all the beta stuff thrown in back
that would be awesome
At 11:55 there seems to be the sprite of that big coin shown in that previous screenshot on the right
12:51 the older dragon coin is in the corner
Maybe if we survive until christmas 2020, a leaker will give us the beta roms for mario world
9:25 i think that thing to the right might be some sort of snapping turtle enemy.
Beta yoshi is scary
17:20 those images in the far right are going to give me nightmares
Wait maybe I’m making a connection out of nothing but isn’t there a sprite in the Yoshi island (specifically the Super Donkey stuff) files where the helmeted character takes it off looks like Mario? Maybe that’s related to the helmet Mario here? Idk
I'm shocked that you're the only other person I've seen make this connection so far
The unused item might just be an alternate version of the cape, and they just forgot to draw it?
All these new betas!
I guess there is no blooper squid enemy even on the beta release? Unless he only appeared in this game once.
I think those strange duck/dinosaur/turtle thing is actually meant to be an early mechakoopa cuz it looks like a koopa but more like a toy.
9:45 So this is where they got the inspiration for Yoshi in the Super Mario Bros Movie
Corrections:
Weird how you talk about the leaf giving him a full tanooki outfit _before_ when that was actually the tanooki outfit powerup before.
@@TheGameDisplay Oh, shit, quick response ahoy. Alright, neat, thanks for clearing stuff up.
The beta Yoshi looks a lot more adorable to me. The beta one where he's slightly more plump is even cuter.
Beta 64 is going to have a field day with this leak!
The beta Yoshi looks a lot like the Mario Brothers movie version
This is really cool information.
In super Mario world, you get shot out of a pipe in a couple of levels, so cannon ball mario would make sense there
They found the Laser Suit!
Gosh, those sprites were awsome, maybe they were removed due to cartridge space.
The beta yoshi was more in line with Miamoto's original sketch he kept on his desk
Why does Nintendo always use SMB3 for place holders and bases? they've put sound clips from the ground theme in games and even used SMB3 Mario Maker 2 style for a base for the 3D world style
smb3 good
I can't fucking believe the Evel Knieval mario suit was real this whole time holy fuck
Back when I was an early teen just getting familiar with SMW romhacking, I remember a few YT vids this one guy made of this weird rom hack thing that was supposed to look like it was showcasing some super-duper-hidden secret level that contained a message from the devs and a powerup that would give mario that same helmet & cape. We all just thought it was a hoax back then. That just makes seeing this absolutely surreal
This beta power up was scrapped during it look like the final cape
Actually now that you mention it... The Switch palace music DOES have a hint of circus music...
So perhaps you are onto something here...
A port of Super Mario Bros 2 (US)? That explains why there are Ninjis in the final area before you fight the final boss
That uggo Peach. Were they going to have a scene like when Eddie meets Lena the Hyena in _Who Framed Roger Rabbit_?
When you upscale pixelart you should use "Nearest Neighbor" as upscaling mode so you dont get those blurry visuals that looks like someone prited it out on a printer from 1980s. Just a tip to look into. Other then that like the video and its very nicely structured.
Thank you for the tip! In this case, the video editor stretched some things automatically, and I didn't realize it in preview window. Never would I have imagined that thousands of people would end up watching it, haha!
so we're gonna start getting smw hacks with the tanuki powerup featuring official smw tanuki mario sprites?
