The KORG KP3 TWELVE YEARS Later

- I bought the original KORG Kaoss Pad (KP3) back in August of 2010 and I've been using it ever since!
While not perfect, I still think it's a fun and useful multi effects tool in 2022 though it could stand for some better I/O and some components are starting to wear out. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
2023 still using KP3 bought around 2009... great for building up sketches and 'live' looping in my home studio. Yes it's quirky, but also tactile and immediate compared to using DAW directly. Guitar pedal board into Kaossilator Pro mic input via DI, Monotribe into line input; Kaossilator output to KP3 input, mic into KP3 mic input, KP3 output to monitors/DAW. This gives me 8 loops, resampling and all the sounds I need to sketch ideas ideas on the fly. All from the comfort of my couch :)
+1
2023, I got my first kp3+ in mint condition and I absoluteley love it. This will live here as long as my fingers work :) Such an icon of a versatile device, even if I do not bring it even close to it‘s limits. Thank you for putting out this video, thats so appreciating. All the best!
I used one with my Roland drum kit when I played in a live psytrance band. Was the perfect piece of kit for what I needed back then.
I make, lofi house and the reverb, delay and looper are great for that, I cant help but keep coming back to it
Still using my KP3+ in 2023. Totally love it for DJing. It's far better than the standard built-in mixer FX.
I love that there're other people still using it. Been beatboxing for close to 17 years, I love my KORG KP3!!!
It's always been a dream of mine to own a Kaoss Pad, and a couple days back I finally got one! I think it's a lot of fun. Thanks for your tutorials. They're helpful!
I also like the idea of using KP3+ as a midi controller, hooking it up to a guitar pedal and then getting crazy with it.
You can do so much with this little bastard
After 9 years the KP3 was my first and is still my favorite effect-machine...
Despite most of its Programms (200/250+Version) are to exotic, impractical or useless, 10% are really worth it...
Especially the Talk-Mod which kicks your music in the third dimansion and is perfectly for pychoacoustic build-ups or fills (Best vibe ever)
Also it´s the fastest(8 Favorit Banks) and easy-to-use(Touchpad -> controlls two values at once) effect-maschine for live playing, jamming or experimenting.
It could be easy synct to a midi-clock of a DAW or other Hardware.
You could use it as a midi-controller for a DAW or other Hardware.
Looks and feels like a space-ship :D
The looper is a nice gimmic but you are limited to 16 Bars above 73BPM and 8 Bars below 73BPM which is sometimes annoying an not enough for some music genres.
Its impractical to resample, delete and manipulate the loops,
but on the other hand, only one KP3 in combination with any synth/keyboard or just a Microphone(Beatbox) is a perfect start/basic-setup for jamming or creating complete songs.
It´s the perfect unit to spice-up all your instruments and brings your sound to an other level.
With all its possibilitys of use and all effects in a box, the price is totaly worth it.
I did the upgrade with a + Maschine and the only new things that are worth it (in my opinion) are the "LFO9 Yoi Yoi"(LFO-Wah-Wah) and the "LoP.8 Loop Breaker (Tape-Stoping-Effect for breaks) The only "new(+)" are 50 more programs... but again only 10% of them are usefull. So to pay more for only 5 new usable effects is questionable.
I can only recommand this maschine to everyone and have still hope that one day they will create a KP4.
(This is my personal opinion, I am not getting paid for this)
Couldn't have said it any better myself. Agree with you 100% Awesome channel by the way. You got some pretty awesome jams over there!
I love your videos too and also would love to hear what you generally keep in your 8 favorite spots if you don't mind sharing
I'm 26 now and my father was a dj 11 years ago, when I was 15 Ive discovered the KP3. Now I work with music productions. The KP3 will be always with me, even If this model don't survive, I will search for a new one. KP4 or KP3MEGAPLUS with more memory and a proper looper would be a dream.
Anyway, I agree with Off Shift Prods, I couldn't have said It any better.
Comment game is strong
I can't live without it, I have a kp2 going into the kp3 and mostly use it on drums for live performance. A mate bought one maybe 6 years ago but his has a fair few different FX to mine, I much prefer mine. It's ace!
To solve the button problems, you need a screwdriver and q-tips/rubbing alcool. Open the kaosspad remove the 3 circuit boards and on the third board, you just clean the switch pads with the alcool.... Problem solved. 40 minutes in all.
I Still use it, as a looper I Stack live backingvocals, as a solo artist, great tool, that works steady as a midislave
I still use it for brainstorming, creativity, sample loops, dance music and meditation. I use acoustic instruments with both the kaos pro- green screen- and original yellow kaossillator. Mine are in excellent shape and work great. Excellent fun!
I have 2 KP3's and 2 Kaoss Pad quads, they are un replaceable. Has a reliable midi out for clock, and some really good delay effects.
Definitely my dude, got mines around 9 years ago. Recently purchased a volca keys, so got it back out of the box. It's been great via midi cable to blend delays in, the grains and LFO's sound sweet for what it is.
Those grain patches are some of my favorite. Such a unique sound to the KP3.
It's my centerpiece and absolute favorite piece of tech.
yeah i use this thing all the time still. i love loopin up drum beats and other samples on it. really fun fx too!
Got one at a thrift store. Was considering it for x/y midi, but I think it does it more in zones. Using with a microfreak; the synth needs effects & can play both one-handed.
The programmable paths are killer to get roto/trem/vibrato effects. Unique way to control parameters gets unique sounds.
Still using mine in 2024❤
Still using it, and readyto buy a second one for back up!
Still using it after I think 15 years. I love this tool for my live looping rig. I input a mic and and guitar and have it working in conjunction with my good old rc-50 looper pedal. It gives me so much pleasure to do so 👊🏽 cool and spot on info in the video
I've come so close to getting a rc-50 looper so many times. The rc 505 has been on my wishlist for a while now, too. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this! A greatly put-together piece about the KP3. Glad to see people still talking about it. I've been spotting it in some videos as part of an artist's setup and I'm glad it's still proving useful out there! I got a KP3+ over 10 years ago, too, at the age of about 16-17. It was so fun messing around with it and I totally agree with your point about getting introduced to and familiarized with the foundations, such as filters, reverb, delay, gates, repeaters, etc. I wanted to produce stuff with it but didn't have a good idea how to go about connecting it to my PC and DAW at the time, so I just listened to music through it and played around with effects and loops. Beardyman was the reason I got it and also my biggest inspiration at the time. Lately, I've been getting back into music production and I've put together a solid baseline setup that allows me to do the routing you mentioned, in order to resample. The idea of finally being able to put this thing to good use is super exciting! Thanks for the extra inspiration and for pointing me in the direction of lo-fi. I was worried that I wasn't getting a super clean signal here and there and hadn't really looked on the bright side that all of that texture adds character to the sound, which is perfect for anything lo-fi. Now, it's not an SP-404 but nevertheless, it's got its own perks and tricks (: I'll be checking out your other KP3 vids! Greetings from Bulgaria (:
I really love to use the KP3 as a multi effect LIVE tool (probably I bought it 2011 or 12). We play electronic music in Munich once a month at AMBIOSONICS and our visitors get really close, so I love to use the KP3 on percussion and drums - filtering, delaying, crushing and especially the pad motion make it also interesting to watch it for the public. Like my Moog Theremini - great for some improvisation and still people are fascinated that you never touch it 🙂
The ability to record a pad motion and play it is still great esp for sequences.
Still using it in my send return loop on my DJ setup, mostly for delay and reverb, but also a bit of modulation fun too. Sometimes I use it to come up with song sketches using a mic to beatbox, or even just sample some records from my collection and loop up weird little sound sketches
I'm still using my Kaossilator pro it's the main brain of my rig. I love it, had it since 2017.
I have my friend's KP3 which he told me was bricked. Its been in my studio for two years. The PSU is missing.
Tried the PSU from my X50 with it yesterday and it turned on with no issues. I was JUST getting GAS too 😂
I am so excited to mess with it!
might be possible to take the KP3 apart and clean/restore the problem recording pad . They sell conductive paint online that is made for such things
Good tip thank you
Still using mine, and still loving it! I have my looper going through it and use it on various instruments. It does a great job, I love it's simplicity and the pad motion button comes in really useful when using it in this way. Pretty cheap options in the used market as well, so I just bought a 2nd unit as the first is getting tired, but was pleased to get a decent unit in good condition for a good price!
Hello, sorry I just got one prpobably early kaoss kp3. I begin to like it , so I will keep it for my pleasure. What are the conditions to upgrade the OS to ver. 3.0. with A PC Windows 10 or 11?. Is it the s 0:22 same hardware?
I could use midi a'd a daw if necessarily
Thanks a lot
Ps too bad no 48v for mike, I am obliged to use Evo8 as input. Any interest to have a separate phantom alim?
Best
I got mine when it first came out and it still works great. I love it I wish I got four of them
I use mine to trigger Samples from a Squarp Pyramid. You can also send CC messages to control the touchpad. I typically leave it on SYN9 for that that stereo swish sound.
I got my KP3+ second hand a few years back to replace my KP mini, I like using it for live effects in addition to the effects on my Digitakt- I like using a bit of granular to glitch things particularly and love the fact that I can just put a cheap microphone in and speak into it adding effects, again, great for a live situation. The live techno performer Saytek uses a Koass Pad, still, and he gets lots of gigs all over the world!
Hi! I use it to put that “kaoss” touch to my producctions. I use a yamaha mx12u to feed my kaossilator, guitar and vocals to the kp3+ set as “send”. I use the aux 1&2 to control how much of wich instrument I send in different moments. Its really my live set up as it lets me jam with myself and contribute with lots of texture options to an ensemble. Sure repatching and stacking effects might get tricky but practice goes a long way. Same with the kaossilator. From just sending a beat or building a crazy one, to make crazy sound lo fi textures.
Its true the audio fidelity is not top notch but interacting with other sources of sound in a mix is a great element with a very distinctive sound and characteristics.
today just got a reminder of a 8 years old post on facrbook about when i found my brand new kp3 in a pawn shop, that feeling was amazing! since that i still use them on my mixer covering all my signals to add some powerfull delays, filters or reverb during my live set, i love the way modulate voices curreltly i usee them for live performance a lot i think is a easy way to carry fx to live set ups and also you gat a fun way to expres your music
One use is pairing it with a sampler-sequencer as a sample pre-processing effect looper. The SmplTrek, for example, isn't super powerful when it comes to effects, so pairing that with a KP3 to mess up the samples before sampling and chopping them up makes for a pretty strong duo.
I have two KP3's (one fell on the floor and got noisy and a weird graphical glitch) and a KP3+. What I like about the KP3+ is it has some scratching capability, which the KP3 did not. That makes the + particularly useful for live looping when you just quickly wanna scratch a custom sound without going through a whole process on another device. There are certainly better devices for scratching, but not a lot of devices I know of can immediately scratch what came through the input a second ago. There's the Tweakalizer, but I have one of those too and it just randomly decided to stop working for no apparent reason (that's Behringer for you, I guess).
Still using it in 2023! But ready for the KP4!?!
that would be amazing!
@@OffShiftProductions well my timing was crazy. Replay = kp4? Released 6 days after my comment. Universe must be listening.
i use my kp3 for vocals during live performances. it's very nice to just be able to have this giant reverb swell for just one sentence of the song, or to do some megaphone/ old telephone effects to spice up your set without having to buy all these expensive vocal pedals that can do only one thing very good. the kp3 is pretty okay at a lot of things
Pretty ok at a lot of things definitely sums it up. 😆 Thanks for watching!
2023, and i still use it for Effects for my Mixes!, and for my Electribe ESX.
Had mine for 8 years now, occasionally use it when I want to get away from screens and DAWs and just record basic real time grooves with my old DM12 in real time , haven't got round to buying a decent looper yet, the one I would need is quite expensive where I live, and the KP3+ is still fun.
When rubber pads of this kind gets bad with time, it is often pretty simple to fix it.
It is usually because the conductive patch on the underside of the pad is full of gunk and dust.
IF you are comfortable with taking your unit apart, it is often just a matter of cleaning the conductive surface with some rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab.
It could also be that the cirquit board has come loose from years of stress. Tighten up those screws or support the board with a piece of eraser, cut to size, so it doesn't flex under pressure.
If you get any at all response out of a rubber button, this is almost sertainly going to fix the problem.
I use it with my DJ sets, because I mix mashups into mashups I use the looper to record loops of the current tracks, change the tracks on the decks mix the new pair of tracks in against the loops
Your videos taught me how to use it and realize its huge creative potential. Thank you so much for doing those videos!! Keep doing beer and music!
That's so awesome! I'm happy my videos have been of some help to people. When I first got the KP3 KORG didn't have any tutorial videos out there so I decided to make my own!
I still use my KP1 from 1999! It's a nice stereo reverb for my synths. I have it set up in Ableton as an effect send so I can route whatever I want through it
Putting together a video on using the KP3 as a hardware plugin right now!
@@OffShiftProductions nice! It's super fun to route stuff through the filters and reverbs especially. Way more engaging than any midi controller I've tried, although I'm sure a lot of that is psychological
@@steven_porter this is actually the thrust of the video I'm working on. I think it's a really intuitive way to add effects and actually 'perform' effects rather than tedious automation in a plug in.
2023 and still love my KP the OG green one
I recently bought a KP3, having both is actually amazing
I still use it now in 2023. I only use it for the tape echo (dly 14) - I use that effect in some part of every single song i record, but I pretty much only use the kp3 for this one effect.
I still use it.. purchase two...experimented,,,,,,one going thru Mini Nova Synth the other on my Roland MC 707 send/receive on track 3 ...it was experimentally beautiful;. the lush pads and bell sound 10x better on the Novation Mini Nova it really felt and sound like I had a higher quality synth engine... The MC 707 was the same using ZEN-Core Sound Packs from Roland. of course all these machine have their features and limitations to some degree , however I did not have to take a deep dive to get to these effect features using the Kaos KP3 ..SIMPLE, FAST GREAT RESULTS...note I did try hardware delay test on both MC-707 and Novation Mini Nova......in that comparison ..I enjoy the the sound effect going thru the kaos KP3 and yes they still connected to my hardware gear down till this day..lol.. kinda hard to remove them now cause of the good sound results, well,.. until i find a cheaper and better unit they will remain. : )
I got the original mini KP about 14 years ago, still use it with my guitar.
Yeeeep I still have it and use it , to process drums, flutes, didgeridoo etc…looove it & still have the first one 👍👍
Who is it for? Beardyman! (Early career) Live loopers and DAWless jammers. See also RC505
I’m still using to add fx to finished tracks in real time and I also use it to make phrases and loops to sample into my mpc live
I’m still using my 3 KP3s, and my kaossilator
thanks for your thoughts greatly appreciated!!
have kp2 for 15 years and currently started a new band
still use it. end of chain effects and sampler in my live setup. wont miss it
I dont see how using at ton of effects and doing samples is ever going out of style. It's about whatever you feed into it and how you utilize it. Yes I still use mine all the time.
Jon Hopkins is the guy I first saw use these & still has the God status on them. His live playing on them is 🤯
I've watched a few of his live performances videos with the KP3. Such a unique way to use them and I think he only uses maybe 5 different effects.
I'm still.usimg it with my kaossilator pro and Boss RC 505 loopstation mki. Love playing it. Just a hobbiest for looping.
thanks so much for your expertise and advise... really inspiring! Mine I bought YEARS ago and only used it for one music production in particular... Then it disappeared in the carton box.... After watching your video I am gonna hook it up and use it for that typical LoFi Production! Cool
Yes! I think in a lot of ways the KP3 was ahead of its time.
@@OffShiftProductions absolutely… but I have to be honest… I really should dig in that cool machine way more and figure out how to use it. Starting in September
They need to release an updated version of this.. An no.. I don’t mean the Quad
Love the Kaossilator Pro *and* the KP3!!
It's in my send loop and I midi control it with a custom programmed arduino. It does what it says on the box, when things get repetitive, reach out for some kaoss.
That's cool. Would love to see that in action
still daily kp2 & 3 user 😅
got them on my subgoups on my venice 320 for live jamming. still love em.
i will buy one tomorrow 🙂 i had my first mixer Numark with Kaoss Pad in 2002 🥰
True fact the GarageBand on the iPad in the app store already has this future
I just like it cuz it makes crazy noises!!
It does that very well.
Phono-a-nono 😅
Spot on about usage for lo-fi
Exactly 💯 pair mine up with the SP303
Think I’m going to keep mine after watching your video
Thanks!
That's awesome! Yes. The more I dig in to this thing even after so many years, the more it surprises me.
I wish Korg would make a Kaoss Pad controller. They’d sell tons of them.
I bought a used, but mint KP3+ for a great price. My idea was - and still is, hehe - to use it as a realtime FX // looper hands-on device. Maybe in conjunction with a Pioneer RMX-1000, not sure how well this combo will be. I tried out both devices on their own here and there. One of my concerns is how much they will degrade my carefully crafted mix. They're both not really professional audio devices. I use quality stuff up until the master mix may hit these two.
Thanks for shedding some light onto what else is possible with a #KaossPad ! Interesting perspective 🙂
Great content. Exactly why i just typed in "kaoss pad" in youtube. Got yourself a subscriber
Still love it! Just today used KP3+ with synth FX on Teams meeting to dramatize my speech 😆 😎
Yo lo sigo usando!!!
Y lo cierto es que es una super máquina, lo tengo como procesador general de toda la cadena después del Looper
I just rescued a Kaossilator Pro from an e-waste bin. Discovering Kaoss pads in 2022!
yes i still use it. i've used 3 different generations of the kp's and this one was the best i think? i have the kp3+ which has different algorithms. i use it as studio tool in a send/return. i think it still sounds good. the only thing I don't like is even with an sd card you can't expand the loop length--max is 16 beats which sucks. but i have the computer for unlimited everything so sometimes limitations can make you work differently, which is good. i also like it for guitar. cheap stuff like this is my bread n butter.
Agreed. A 32 beat length would be amazing - you could truly compose on it at that length. Sounds like you use it similar to how I do, integrated with a computer. Thanks for watching!
Just bought mine a few days ago! It's a KP3+
Nice!
I love it both the kaossolater pro and kp3.
I use them for my live shows to throw crazy effects and beats over the tracks, it's so fun 😅
My only down side is they are showing their age both physically and just generally being compared to other modern equipment. If korg released a new thing that combines them both that would be a dream come true for me 😋
i prefer The Kaoss Pad 2. I have 2 and still use them even though the loop buttons stopped working on both
i plan on using my kaossilator pro along with my korg sampler running through my strymon night sky for back ground music for my video art.
Strymon Nightsky is an amazing underrated pedal!! You're gonna create some amazing soundscapes with that set up!
@@OffShiftProductions thanks, 👍
I accidentally got the Kaossilator back in the day. Finally just got a KP+ so I can use it as a loop station for beatboxing
I use it to loop vocal samples i play off my phone into a mic. The lfo chops it up nice and gives some choppiness to otherwise very psychedelic techno/cyberpunk
Also it is amazing for harsh noise and sampling screams
I use it for live performances. They’re awesome 😎
I use it for electric music.
Nice review man, I’ve used it to run my 2000XL through it for effects or to sample into the Kaoss get some nice chops and loops then sample those into the MPC with or without effects. It’s a fun lil machine. Wish it was battery powered tho but all good, gotta roll with the punches. It’s not what you use its how you use what you use. 👊🏽
That thing looks like a bomb from a 80s syfy movie!
I got mine not long after it came onto the market as a dj tool. it is fun to use as a looper or to use the fx creatively when sending stuff into it, I also really like the vocoder. i've managed to do stuff with it creatively that I haven't with much more expensive gear and in some ways it was actually more fun with this. its all around great for performance with the xy pad idea. but yea it's not a studio tool really. it really lacks good integration with other hardware. tbh it would awesome if they gave it a total overhaul, better midi integration, maybe sync in and out with their other gear. the looper needs to be redone, it's just not tight enough, even with midi. I think it's had it's run though and I would be very surprised if they went back to it after all this time. bit of a pity because I think they were really onto something with this neat concept.
Nice video and nostalgic memories.
So good to see you talk about the KP3 even now.
Need your assistance . 🙏🙏
When I connect my KP3 to my iMac ( os 10.12 )
1. I only see the files I loaded directly through the KP3 inputs.
Also My iMac does not say SD card
2. How do I insert a wave file into the KP3
I did drag a wav file but it does not load into the KP3
Any tips on the above
Thanks in advance
* My KP3 was bought in 2008
I don't have a mac so I'm not sure. One thing you could try is load your samples on to SD card from your mac and then insert the SD card in to the KP3 an load them on to the KP3 that way. I'm fairly certain that the KP3 doesn't read SD cards over 1GB.
I use mine almost everyday along with my Yamaha djx keyboard!
I use for sample variation. I love it. Super f.un to automate and easy effects
Absolutely indispensable i a DAWless set up. I have two different drum machines either side of a dj mixer with crossfader so i can mix like records, output from that mixer into kp3+ for midi synced fx and sampling. Regularly hook external stuff up to the mic input for quick sampling. Use it in everything. Solid points tho...
I’ve been trying to make up my mind if I should get one for about 12 years
I got mine after I saw Jon Hopkins using two of them to perform live on kexp.
You got me curious so I looked it up. He's using 3 of them! I'd be very curious to see the signal path he uses with them and how he uses them. Look at like he's using the preset buttons at the top a lot and using the fx depth knob to do sort of a predealy. Super cool. Thanks for turning me on to that.
Hey Fam! I still use mine on an aux of my console. I have a KP3+ I actually like the delays, and the "playability" of the effects
Have one rigged with my deluge and lxr02. Been having issues where the full mix drops volume at times. I’m on the verge of getting rid of it. Great device other than the Issue I have.
it's a quirky device for sure.
i use it in livesets, it adds fx to my budget behringer 303
I got my KP3 a few years ago just to use for DJ FX, and I thought it was awful (and the sound floor is awful). Then I ended up using it as just an X/Y pad to control other things. And a few days ago I was thinking of getting an old Yamaha or Boss sampler to play with - because I’m not buying a mfing Teenage Engineering calculator to get my dank chill lo-fi beats on - and then I remembered the KP3 is probably better for sampling than any of the stuff I’ve been trying to use it for.
omg the noise floor on the KP3 is horrendous. I also used to DJ with it and throw fx on and i found it was just too unpredictable in terms of how loud certain patches would be. sampling is super fun with the KP3.
Still use mine. For effects and looping.
Just got one today for my studio ! How about that ? :D Trying to figure it our yet ! ;)
The KP3 has the most performance friendly workflow for juggling loops I've seen. Nothing quite like it and I think it's a shame that KORG hasn't explored the idea further. Perhaps they'll make an Electribe 3 one day that incorporates a KaossPad like control and samplers. (E2 Samplers was a real disappointment when it came to sampling)
Yes! Electribe 3, and KP5!
My set up is: the Roland SP404SX connected to a korg kaos pad with a radial trim 2 DI
I've been looking at those Roland units for a while now. Seems like a great piece of gear
❤ el.mejor aparato de efecctos sin duda una obra maestra
I also use my kp3+ in 2022 in mi DJ set as a FX unit and sampler loop like a 3rd cdj. I have a lot of videos in mi yt channel.
I have 3, the KP3, 3+, and Pro. The original KP3 was acquired as an effects unit to add to my live rig for use with my first band about 10yrs ago. The band was an experimental audio-visual project using a mix of live and pre-recorded music and live and pre-recorded visuals. The Godmonkey Skyhook Amalgamation, based in Corby, Northants. The band only lasted for a few months, and we never recorded the whole thing professionally, but we did several festivals, and a theatre performance that is on the bands Facebook page. Since then I used the KP3+ with The Slackstring Band as a sample player to add spoken word, and other stuff to the live performances. Bear in mind I'm a late starter in being in bands, and in a short time frame have gone on to acquire lots of gear to play with in my studio since. I tend to cycle through my gear, changing the content of my studio rig as I work on things, and the KP's still get used from time to time
