By far the best (almost) new site this year. These videos are delightful! Congrats on a deeply entertaining (and frequently hilarious) year! Happy New Year!
I have one of these, it was my first synth. A guy at Guitar Center managed to sell it to me when I was like 13 and had no idea how to achieve what I wanted. The thing is fun to mess around with, but a nightmare to try to make any serious music with. I found I wasted more time messing around with it than I did actually making anything I felt passionate about. It sat unused for years, but recently I've found some cool ways to make use of it, so it FINALLY has a role in my workflow doing something I couldn't already do without it. Now there's a reason for it to take up space in my house beside sentimental value.
No matter how crap my day this channel always cheers me up ! I've owned a number of Kaoss pads including the first version when it first came out and it was, and still is, an integral part of my kit. I agree that it's hit and miss ... but everyone who's stepped up to it has managed to show me within minutes some hidden gem of a feature i didn't even know was there. Looking forward to getting back into the studio !
Thank you for so many great vids this year! This channel is one my favorites. You will love to review the Yamaha rm1x in 2021. It will tick many of your boxes for bad gear (rompler with many many buttons). But you will be thrilled it’s a very capable dawless sequencer.
Thanks for this episode to make my christmas even better. Merry christmas and a musical and healthy new year from the Netherlands! And like you said, see you next year!
The original Kaossilator was my first synth-like instrument and I'll never sell it because it's so damn clever and fast to make a beat on and then forget it forever. I then got the "pro" and sold it quickly, because it was kind of boring for some reason compared to the more limited original version. But for me it was really easy to make loops on the big one too, the four tracks were cool and once you selected a scale it was super easy to get stuff out of it and the larger touch pad made it even easier to hit the right notes.
Ha...you finally did it , my christmas wish come true: A Kaossilator review omg...awesome video...i bought an 90€ or so cable from Rkode. So you can use after a few settings (scale chromatic note range full) kaossilator as midi device. Works not perfectly if you want to play BACH, but for most electronic music its a worth cool addon. Cool is pitch or wheel control works also as addition to xy controls. so you can get unexpected cool noise out your kaossilator. Cheers and merry Christmas🎹🎄PS: Rkode cable works also for Korg Volca Sample to change all sounds it to only one channel...
Ahahahhahahaha just seeing this right now!!! I bought this when it came out I guess?? I had this thing for two months and it was driving me nuts and sold it. 🤭 Cuz I was always hanging around in the local music store searching for new gear and thought it would be an amazing asset. Think I was attracted by the led and pad but mehn what a struggle and frustration. It’s so satisfying after all those years to see someone actually being bothered by its features as well. Happy that I bumped into this video 🤣 Thank you!! Hahaha Happy New Year 🎉
I used to have one of these. I ended up selling it to help fund a Digitakt. The kaossilator is okay as a looper for external synths if you can nail the timing. I never liked using it for its internal sounds though (well other than the white noise patch which is pretty fun to play on the X/Y pad). I love your channel by the way. I look forward to watching your videos each week. Thanks for your hard work!
I have a Kaossilator Pro, and it does take time and effort to discover and fully understand its strengths, and how to work within the parameters of the synth's capabilities to generate great music. Focusing too much on what it can't do or can't do very well is not a very productive approach to using the Kaossilator Pro; this will only result in frustration.
Waaaooow! I never comment on YT videos but I have to say well done this channel is great. I can't believe you've only been here a few months. Your presentation is so professional and your critique is thorough and nuanced. Also I've never heard the expression "Like trying to paint the hallway through the letterbox" and as a native English speaker and lyricist, I'm jealous. I had one of these. Bought it for creating sfx for electric music & sound design. Found out the MIDI CC was bugged out & hooked up with a dev who hacked the OS. Ended up selling it in 2018 for $150. Sounds were great but like you said "very impractical". The Korg Koass pad mini is an amazing fx module though!
You should do the Trigger Finger Pro. Was 50% weeks after release and never received a single update. Then they took what they were doing with vst support and put that tech into their Akai Advance keyboard line (also under the inMusic brand umbrella)
I have the TF (1.0). Once the software for it was abandoned, it cannot do much except trigger MIDI notes - nothing in the way of USB, except you need it plugged in to get power, even if you're not using a USB message connection. Its successor the Trigger Finger Pro was better, but I never really went back to M-Audio unless its for adapters or a low cost controller
I've got the Korg mini Kaosillator, the battery powered one, and it's great, mostly for its tiny size, portability, and ease of playing. I've used it for my cosplay outfits, running it through speakers under my costume. What a kick! And it doesn't cost a ton.
I love my OG Kaossilator, and there were just a couple tweaks it really needed to be truly great (particularly MIDI in for notes or at least clock) so it's sad that they really appear to have let the magic out in the transition to Pro. Some goddamned calibrated markings on the touch pad would have been a lot more helpful than meaningless blinkenlights too.
It would be cool for a kaossilator that could have you program scales in. I play a lot of Indian music that has ragas with notes that correspond to scales that wouldn't be mapped in there initially. I didn't see anything like that in the editor, but if it does exist let me know.
I used it with the MicroSampler, synchronized by a BeatStep Pro. Whenever you change the tempo on the BeatStep Pro, the Kaossilator is doing something, but it's out of sync, because, the tempo signal is transmitted to full quarter notes only. Nevertheless: The results were big fun sometimes!
Finally! Thank you! I bought the Kaossilator pro ages ago for 400 dollars in the US, sold it for 80 EUR in Germany, cheaply, just out of pity for whoever would end up using it. I know all of the sounds by heart. I hate all of them, with a pinch of love.
It amazes me how week after week you manage to tap back in to the zeitgeist of the time when the gear first came out! Congrats on the reward man! watched you and Gaz talk about ,well everything :). Kaoss pad also has big problems with sync, as far as i know they never solved it.. if you loop something in time, after a while it goes out of sync, no matter what you do..
I’ve had my kaossilator OG for 13 years and I’ve used it on every musical project I have worked on. But only for Santa Sweeps E.G 6:09 in this video and sampling the sounds then manipulating. Useless for harmony melody and drums but great for ambience and intermittent funky wobbles. Seeing as you can pick the baby one up for £40 or less sometimes over here I’d call it great bang for your buck if you use it creatively but these big boys are a whole other kettle of fish. Great video! Thanks for the enjoyment as always x
i would like to see you do a piece on the Emu command stations like the XL-7 or MP-7 based on the Mo phatt and extreme lead modules built into a groove box controll suface with a bunch of midi and meant to be the center of a dawless setup made before the term "dawless" was invented
Yesss! I have the PX-7, which seems to be the more obscure of these semi-obscure workstations. 😁 So yeah, I for one second this shout, it would warm these cockles of mine heart 😊
@@AudioPilz I have the MP-7 with an added extreme lead expansion ROM. I’m not sure if the shipping cost would be prohibitive but your I would be more than happy to use mine.
Hard to argue with this assessment. The janky MIDI kills what could have been a handy rompler via your DAW. I'm saving mine to give to my son when he's older and can learn how to make music using the unit exclusively.
Bummed I didn’t pick one of these up. HOWEVER, I briefly did have a Numark EM-460 DJ mixer that had an early Kaoss Pad built into it. It was excellent for those DJs with 3 hands!
@@DJWESG1 aye i run a dxm06 since having that em260 and that has been solid, not a bad thing to say about it. strange stories with music gear, some of it is neglected and abused and sometimes mint/near perfect. makes you wonder what kind of people the previous owners were like. or if its just an inherent problem with certain models.
The editing and pacing are so good, florian. You deserve a mince pie for those alone ✊ I've owned it's cohort, the kaoss pad of that time, and that was a hoot to use (especially live..long loading times for the samples there too), but this i couldn't bring myself to part cash with. Korg have remarkably used this interface as far down the line as my current smartphone (on the app, which is MUCH easier to use), but this is a curio at best. The original (and currently s/h) prices are as wild as a raver with a really bad stomach. I have no idea who owns these & i suspect they're gifts or potential tax write offs. Korg went onto better things such as the volcas, the minilogue, the monologue and *anything* else. This mis-step is like the suit jacket you bought in a rush from the sales, on the way home from work, for a works related party the next day; you dont actually like it that much, no one cares you're wearing it & even though you won't wear it again, you dont have the heart to get rid of it right now.
The kaossilator and the kaossilator pro were my first pieces of gear back in 2005. I always had the feeling that it was promising but soooo hard to play : not enough slots for tracks, the sh***y pad to play, and so on... I stopped buying gear till 2018, when I bought the novation circuit (halleliuah!!!). Such a big leap forward in terms of fun and playability !!!
I play w a band and use this..you can change note scales fairly easy. I'm no theory major. But my mates will let me know real quick if I were outta tune..
@@DjSuess Yeah I was gonna say something similar, I have played with one of these with some friends on guitar and drums and it was quite easy to change scales and match them. The kaosillator pairs nicely with a microkorg also.
i did manage to do 3 finished tracks with the kaosilator. it was tricky but the results were ok enough to publish. it could of been a really decent machine. this video nailed that
Yei!!! My comment was featured at 4:21!!! Seems like we both agree on the conclusion! Close, but no cigar :D Another Korg Gadget I have fond memories of being nearly good on it's own is the Monotribe, which was both the successor to the monotron and the Volca lineup beta test! It had a cool everything even though it sounded limited. I let it go when I had a full Volca Lineup but I still have better memories of the Monotribe than the Volca Drum (which I replaced with a Volca Sample)
I bought a Kaossalator pro plus a couple years ago, and it's the center of my live looping setup. I start with a drumbeat on the Kaossalator and then sync everything up to that to solve timing issues; and I run all my other instruments into a small mixer which runs into the input on the Korg. So I get a drum machine and 4 track looper in a small package, and the mixer fits neatly on the small stand next to the Kaossalator anyway, so it's not even that much more space being taken up. I've been extremely happy with it's performance in my setup, and very rarely do I run into any real limits on what I want to do with it in this context.
Watching this 2 years later because I'm wondering what to do with this unit. Thanks for putting my question up in the video and once again great video. This indeed is a weird device. I made a template to try and get accurate notes out of it. I used sticky back plastic.
I really looked into the Kaoscillator Pro and I came to similar conclusions, very expensive and can't find anyone who can do something useful with it. Even synth Wizard Jordan Ruddess does'nt seem to know what he's doing with it, lol!
Had one for years, great for kickstarting a jam, but in addition to your excellent list, sound tweaking & library editing. It's a big list of preset sounds to scroll through but you can't tailor it!

Thanks! Gaz is such an inspiration!
When you realise this is the last Friday of 2020
It certainly is
Man, I hope the calendar doesn't just roll over to December 32nd after next Thursday.
8 more months of 2020
Either way, New Year or 2020 II corona boogaloo, better make the best of this last Friday innit
@@miamha 2020 II, Judgement Day
Thank you man for all the videos you put out this years They had been a part of my quarantine 😃
Thanks for watching!
The lack of undo with a pad to play notes is a deadly combination.
True! It's traumatizing...
Thanks! Santa sweeps forever!
i would like to see you do a piece on the Emu command stations like the XL-7 or MP-7 based on the Mo phatt and extreme lead modules built into a groove box controll suface with a bunch of midi and meant to be the center of a dawless setup made before the term "dawless" was invented
Great idea! I wanted to cover EMU stuff for month!
More than happy to let you use mine.
@@AudioPilz Take Pauly's
Thanks! Glad I'm not the only one. Bought mine at a pawn shop and thought it it had damage. Now I know why I had such difficulty.
Hard to argue with this assessment. The janky MIDI kills what could have been a handy rompler via your DAW. I'm saving mine to give to my son when he's older and can learn how to make music using the unit exclusively.
Thanks! Buy him a Retrokit RK002 with it ;)
@@AudioPilz 50EUR is a pricey buy - might have to before Brexit import tax kicks in :(
CC instead of note on/off. Fail.
This video was a public service announcement warning me to stay away. Thanks.
Merry Christmas from the states!
Thanks! HO HO HO!!!
Bummed I didn’t pick one of these up. HOWEVER, I briefly did have a Numark EM-460 DJ mixer that had an early Kaoss Pad built into it. It was excellent for those DJs with 3 hands!
Always wanted to have one of those mixers!
Great little mixer that. But it went in the bin with everything else from that era.
shit thats the red thing rite? i had em260 in the early 2000s. one of the faders broke so i had to ditch it. gimmicky thing lol
@@foundatlantis yup, that's the one. I had both. Faders went on Both. numark though always supplied cheap parts, unlike the fanboy manufacturers.
Merry Xmas Audio Pilz enjoyed your vids and learned loads :)
Thanks! Happy to hear that!
The editing and pacing are so good, florian. You deserve a mince pie for those alone ✊
I've owned it's cohort, the kaoss pad of that time, and that was a hoot to use (especially live..long loading times for the samples there too), but this i couldn't bring myself to part cash with.
You had me at mince pie! Thanks!
Happy Xmas BGMTSGA love it as usual! Have a good one👽👏👍
Same to you! Thanks!
Get a RetroKits RK-02 - total gamechanger for the Kaossilator Pro!
You're a treasure dude, you're gonna be huge. Merry Christmas and happy New Year!
Thank you so much! It means a lot to me!
He is huge.
Look at his head.
@@freefinancialadvice lol
Imagine bringing this to band practice. “Hey what key are you in?” “The key of X/Y”
It actually has a super-sophisticated scale system ;)
I play w a band and use this..you can change note scales fairly easy. I'm no theory major. But my mates will let me know real quick if I were outta tune..
@@DjSuess Yeah I was gonna say something similar, I have played with one of these with some friends on guitar and drums and it was quite easy to change scales and match them. The kaosillator pairs nicely with a microkorg also.
You are creative in so many ways, just cool!
Thanks!
i did manage to do 3 finished tracks with the kaosilator. it was tricky but the results were ok enough to publish. it could of been a really decent machine. this video nailed that
Yeah, such a missed opportunity...
Yei!!! My comment was featured at 4:21!!! Seems like we both agree on the conclusion! Close, but no cigar :D
Another Korg Gadget I have fond memories of being nearly good on it's own is the Monotribe, which was both the successor to the monotron and the Volca lineup beta test! It had a cool everything even though it sounded limited. I let it go when I had a full Volca Lineup but I still have better memories of the Monotribe than the Volca Drum (which I replaced with a Volca Sample)
Yeah! Thanks for the comment! Monotribe has becomre really rare and most people love it to bits!
Merry Xmas
*See you next year*
Thanks! Looking forward to '21
I bought a Kaossalator pro plus a couple years ago, and it's the center of my live looping setup.
I would love to use it this way
I've had a morbid fascination with this thingy but this video makes me glad I never got one:D
A morbid fascination is absolutely necessary for that thing ;)
You answered every question i have ever had about it. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
(More) ROMpler in 2021. Great idea for more bad gear stuff :)
Thanks for the input! More romplers to come!
Watching this 2 years later because I'm wondering what to do with this unit. Thanks for putting my question up in the video and once again great video. This indeed is a weird device. I made a template to try and get accurate notes out of it. I used sticky back plastic.
Nice technique!
I really looked into the Kaoscillator Pro and I came to similar conclusions, very expensive and can't find anyone who can do something useful with it. Even synth Wizard Jordan Ruddess does'nt seem to know what he's doing with it, lol!
I think he found the ultimate application: making money;)
Ha ha, lol
Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Merry Christmas. All the best!
Man the mid 90’s till the 2010 was a bad time for hardware gear!!!!! There was a few gems surrounded by a bunch of I wish I didn’t buy that!!!!
Still it's a lot of fun to mess around with them
Yes, Christmas shout outs from Canada! I've always wanted one, but I'm happy with my little kaossilator mini I grabbed for like $75.
Thanks! All the best! The little Kaossilators are so cute!
“BAD GEAR???” Sacrilege I say, Knave!!
This whole channel is a sacrilege ;)
AudioPilz- Dig. But you picked one of *my* favorites this time...
Had one for years, great for kickstarting a jam, but in addition to your excellent list, sound tweaking & library editing. It's a big list of preset sounds to scroll through but you can't tailor it!
True that!
All "DJ" gear features RCA jacks so that you can't accidentally plug into something Inexpensive ;-)
Sounds legit 😅
Let’s goooooo. Best new music gear channel 2020 for sureee.
Thank you so much!
This is one of those things that almost nails it, but misses the mark.
True!
