The shop that tried to pull the scam should be called out by name.
They thought they would either get a huge bill, OR not work on it at all. I see this all too often. Had they, they would have just swapped parts for oem "like" parts to make more money on part markup, Then caused issues, that they would then subsequently claim are just common issues with the car... NOT something THEY caused by using knockoff parts. They should be called out and put out of business.
Always, no reason to protect a shitty dealer, especially when you can always release the information anonymously. Otherwise you're just directly supporting more customers in your industry getting scammed and ensuring people will always distrust mechanics.
I agree, but the problem is unfortunately the car wizard could still be hit with a defamation lawsuit no matter how right he is
True: But he said that even if they have right, they can still get a lawsuit. And even they win, it will use a lot of unnecessary time, money and paperwork.

I'd respect people more if they said "Yea we don't have any experience with Bentley's so we can't work on the car" rather than quoting 15k and never get that customer back ever

The metal work in the gauge cluster and in front of the passenger is called Engine Turning. Very 1930s

My parents had a 05 Continental GT. The number of problems this thing had nearly caused a divorce.
That’s because owning a car like that you supposed to just keep it as a lawn ornament. Maybe drive it once or twice a month on the weekends, and then never drive it. If you daily drive it, expect to put more and more more money into it.
The people that buy these cars have like 10 other cars. And they only drive these once a month at most.

Idk i have an 07 s65 i have perfectly maintained, bought it at a dealer auction for 20, probably put another 20 into it and she’s mint, new it was 192k and i cant afford that lol, i can afford anything it can throw at me from here on out also
I agree. I sold my 06 Bentley Flying Spur (4 door). Dealer wanted $6000 for tune up. I had local Bentley/Audi/Porche Specialist did a tune up for $2000. I had it a few years and I ended up having anxiety about doing brakes in the next year and a half, maybe $8000. Too much, SOLD!

What the Wizard stated and I have been saying myself for decades. You can buy a car from anywhere but more importantly you better find a Dealer/Independent shop that you trust when your cart needs service. I drove Saab's for 35 years and used an independent shop that only serviced Saab's. We had a great relationship and their work was absolutely perfection. Never had to take any repair back because something wasn't done right the first time. Grimes is a gem! Never give him a reason to stray elsewhere away from Omega.
Yeah engine turning if im not mistaken was copied from planes back then and used in cars-?? I know the spirit of St.Louis has it on its engine cowling and as you said very early big engine race cars had it as well.
A bit over 20 years ago, a friend with limited cash bought an already "mature aged" Nissan station waggon, she bought it out of a newspaper advert private sale, and it was good at first.
After owning it awhile a loud TIMING CHAIN rattle started. It sounded horrendous on startup and idling especially. She took it to a neighbourhood mechanic workshop somewhere and had the timing chain replaced. It was great, for awhile.
But before very long, that timing chain rattle was back as bad as ever. By that time, she had some permanent work and could get a finance loan, so signed up for a brand new car. She let me buy the Nissan off her for a bargain "mate's rates" price.
I drove it home, very gently, and parked it, and then made an appointment with, another different mechanic workshop business she had used previously and recommended highly. This one had changed it's name over the years, but had originally been called "(Suburb-name) Datsun repairs" or something. Yes, they had specialised in Datsuns and Nissans for literally decades. They knew these cars inside out.
I made an appointment there and drove in, gently, and they replaced the timing chain as required. I asked the mechanic why the already replaced timing chain, had worn out prematurely, after just a couple of thousand kilometres/miles. He explained that the engine block had EXTRA threaded holes into which the chain guides could be easily screwed into the wrong holes. It would fit and work fine but the chain's life was greatly shortened (either because the chain was overtight, or too loose, I assume).
Anyway I had the car for a long time after that and drove it for many miles including towing tonnes of animal feed wheat on a trailer, and towing an entire car on a flat tow A-frame from the city to my outback home. The engine ran fine until the car eventually died (from other causes. The timing chain was still fine).
Mechanics that specialise in certain models of car learn the details, that a competent mechanic, not familiar with that model, might screw up.

I worked as an Audi tech for 15 years. Audi/VW worked its way through most of the alphabet on it coil upgrade part numbers. The heat that they are subjected to, breaks all of the insulators down.
I hate our world. Is why I love seeing you and hoovie fix stuff, not trash stuff.

I got a 4runner. Mudding and stuff is fun. My Triumph Tiger has scars from being in some mud. But is one thing to use a vehicle for intended purpose or just fun vs cringe trashing something nice.
But also think Hoovie underestimated how hard it was actually going to be on it. Get some mud on it, then off for a detail and polish. Like the Countach in snow.

The dealer should file a legal complaint to the Attorney General for fraud against the other shop.
An outrageous repair quote does not meet the definition of fraud.
It does sound like they were actually trying to scare them away.
I've had places do that because they didn't want to be bothered.

@@alexpetree2038if they quote ridiculous prices for repairs, you accept the quote, and they do those repairs, you may have gotten ripped off, but it’s not fraud. For it to be fraud they also need to either tell you that unnecessary repairs are needed, or they need charge you for repairs they didn’t do.
That pattern on the dash is 'engine turned' or 'perlage' - very ornamental indeed.

lol Had one and did take care of it as far as maintenance but drove it like any other car and do detail my cars so still looks clean. To me no difference then a Mercedes, or a BMW. I won’t remove my shoes needless to say. Yes I guess because they are a shop a different story as they don’t want to get blamed for marks on carpet and etc.
They tried to charge me 6k to fix suspension and ended up fixing it myself was the level sensor.

@@rogermason5833 I cannot believe that the Dash is 'Engine-Turned Aluminium. As we all know, Aluminium oxydizes in a very short time, it is easily scratched, even with a thin laquer coating. On the Bentley, I would like to believe that Mrs. Wizard is 100% correct when she used the term 'steel'. This is most likely to be Engine-Turned Stainless Steel, and definitely not any cheap Aluminium product. Stainless Steel Sheet is cheap, these days. I am not defending Bentley in any way. I cannot begin to estimate the cost per mile, when the car has only done 36,000 miles. A Toyota would not be in the Repair Shop at such a low mileage. I will stick with my 53-year old VW Beetle, driven daily that gets me from A to B and costs almost nothing, year after year. Greetings from Australia.

Im not really sure why this channel seems to have taken a hard left and every video seems to be "A Scam" or "OMG 10k in repairs" Seems a little sensationalist to me. I love coming to this channel for good, true, car knowledge and an inside look of an honest mechanic. Not feeling the same as it did imo.

Nothing like dealing with tons of oil leaks and issues with only 36,000 miles. Only someone who hates their money and likes throwing it away would buy a Bentley.

it looked like just some dried caked on dirt on the under body panel though, was it really an oil leak? Seams to run fine not sure how it really needs new coils to fix an oil leak that has nothing to do with it if there even is one, maybe someone spilled some oil during the last oil change, doesn't mean it was leaking.
My lowly Ford is 11 years old now, around 50k miles (78000km). Makes more power than a Bentley (635hp at the wheels, around 800hp at the crank). It has never broken down and has zero oil leaks. The worst problems it has had were a boost pressure sensor failure and a leaking brake master cylinder. Both fixed without too much cost or drama.
I think it's pretty clear that VAG products have below par long term reliability.
@@abc123fhdi The oil leak is due to a failed valve cover gasket and has nil to do with the spark plugs/coils. During the YT video, Grimes stated the scan tool had established that the engine had suffered multiple cylinder misfires - which were very likely due to failing spark plugs and/or coils.
GRIMES!1!! Thanks Wizard. How I wish your shop was in close proximity to our home. I do have a trustworthy/skilled local shop at this time. I'm eager to give them my business, because if we lost them for any reason - we'd be back in the old west with stagecoach robberies.
my SLK 280 dropped two Delphi Coil packs at 39,000. I replaced them all with Bosch and it has 90K on it with no issues. Bosch generally makes good stuff. Not sure what Mercedes was thinking using crap Delphi parts.
Makes me wonder if the other shop even knew to put the car in jack mode before they put it on their lift
Nothing bad happen if you don't ,you drive it for a few miles and everything is back to normal again ,the Wizard is a drama queen ,the problem with the vacuum lines and engine out is just up to 2007 then they were rerouted and you could repair the taking just the steering rack out.I never heard from anybody that they had a problem with the starter

These cars are made just 24 miles from me, i have a neighbour who works for Bentley in Crewe.
and whilst they are all about quality, the VW underpinnings are not that great.
They require expert knowledge, most garages just don't understand them, hence the crazy quotes
for parts that are not required.
The price of genuine spares make your wallet melt, they can be be bought for good prices until you
have to service and repair them.

A honest mechanic has to constantly turn away work once it gets out that they are the shop to go to.
I usually have to schedule repairs with my mechanic over a week out because they're that busy.

@@user-hr5di5fg8b a quality vehicle with only 36k miles wouldn't need anything, even at 18 years old. Not even a dried up water hose. And those vehicles are always garaged, never exposed to the elements. Never had a cold start or been frozen or in 100 degree weather. Usually kept inside at 50 to 60 degrees.
They're garbage, pal. No two ways about it. It's a German product assembled in England.

2:29 Opening the hood and then seeing a bunch of plastic screwed as second hood mounted on the Bentley engine is the biggest disappoinment one can have. In fact you wonder why there was need for a top hood anyway.

It's nice to see more honest mechanics out there. It's too bad there are far too many mechanics looking to rip unsuspecting people off, REALLY PISSES ME OFF! After I graduated auto mechanics school in the 80s. Part of the program was to place graduate students in shops. They sent me to SEARS for a job, they said show up for training. I thought I just got out of school with the best grades they had seen in years. I didn't need to train for anything IMO. Their training was how to rip people off! The guys showed us how easy it was to fool people who had no clue how things work. One of the worse tricks was to carry a little bottle of oil in you pocket and squirt it on the shocks or brakes. So when you brought the customer to the car you could show them the leaks. Other things were showing people they needed front end work by just twisting the tie rods and claiming they were about to go, as a mechanic you know that is part of their natural movement but the customer didn't know that. Other things they showed us was disconnecting a spark plug wire or vacuum hose. It was totally a program that taught you how to scam SEARS customers. I quit that day went back to the school and told them what I saw and was told to do. They didn't believe me and said I was on my own because I didn't take the job! I eventually called the BBB and told them what I saw. Not long after one of the local news stations did a sting at several shops including SEARS. Almost all but one were trying to pull scams. My neighbor had a Pontiac G6 she brought to me to check after a shop told her it needed a new head gasket. I popped the hood open and I could hear a whistle and the engine was running real rough. They shop had pulled the vacuum line hid it under one of the brackets as soon as I hooked it back up the car ran fine never showed any signs the head gasket was gone. The quoted her 2200 bucks to fix the car!!!!! She offered me 100 bucks and I said no but every Christmas I would get a Dunkin Donuts gift card in the mail for a few years after.

Audi should adapt to Subaru coils. My 200k Crosstrek has the original from new ones.
Yet, some dealers give a customer a list of repairs that are not needed. I remember a Cadillac Hoovie bought. Took it to a dealer and got a long list of repairs it supposedly had to have done. Wizard found maybe half were of any concern.

When i retired, the first thing i did was get rid of my German car and bought a Toyota. It's going on 7 years old. Looks and drives great. I recently had a dealer oil change and tire rotation. It came back with an inspection report. "Everything looks great!"
we had a 1974 Gremlin with the exact same "brushed steel" gauge surround. If course it was just a decal but the end result is the same. If the Bentley has vacuum-driven wipers I'm going to be convinced it's an AMC.

I live in Australia and I have a 2013 V8 4.0 Twin Turbo with 30500 miles. Its beautiful and immaculate. I own a European specialist shop so my team can service the car easily, the engine is Audi and many of the hidden parts are actually VW. Having said that, it's given no problems at all since I have owned it. They are amazing cars.

I believe this was the early years of when Bentley was bought by VW/Audi. They did what ford and GM did, just re using their basic switches all cars got on high trim luxury brands.

Don't confuse "scam" vs "ignorance" when you have the right tool for the right job, things change.

In three years or less, EVs will be 600+ miles or range while charging faster. I love channels like this that highlight reasons to get away from the scammers.
The more range an EV battery has, the longer it takes to charge. So in a few more years maybe you’ll get to choose either 600 miles range OR faster charging, but not both!
These Bentleys are dirt cheap now due to their massive depreciation. You can pick one of them up for $35K all day. I wouldn't touch them since the cost of parts are a nightmare.

Spark plugs used to be replaced at 6000 miles but as technology moved forward, the change mileage has dramatically increased some at 80,000 miles or more. The problem becomes when the gap starts to increase and when changing them at the correct mileage, the gap could have increased by 30 thou. With the increase in gap, the resistance becomes greater and the coil has to overcome that in order to discharge so when the resistance gets too much the coil discharges in itself and as such without preventative maintenance, the coils need replacing with the plugs. Some vehicles are ridiculous to service but if possible, re-gap the plugs every 20,000 miles and your coils could last the life of the engine
gap on modern does not "grow" like it did on the copper plugs in your 77 chevy. That's what the platinum / iridium plating is for. the bigger issue now is them seizing in the head.

I was looking at a f150 but when driving it sounds like when you use breaks that have worn out pads. Kind of a scaping screeching type noise. But not when you use the brakes, just when you are driving. Anyone know what that is?
2019 to now new car prices up 42% similar to homes because of inflation. Salaries only increased 15% same time period. $100 is the new $20 bill replacement. The coils do not seem that expensive now, right. Not!
So Im wondering if the stock OEM coils only get you 36k miles then why not go for aftermarket upgrade from a known reputable company. I do this with BMW.

Had they, they would have just swapped parts for oem "like" parts to make more money on part markup, Then caused issues, that they would then subsequently claim are just common issues with the car... NOT something THEY caused by using knockoff parts.
People forget about the VW Phaeton, was the first car with the W12. It was supposed to be an Audi type vehicle. It's funny that they took 2 VR6 engines (Corrado VR6 as an example) and mated them together
I have a euro shop near me like the wizarrd. First quote i noticed labor was high but did the repairs. Ended up saving money because the savings in diagnostic labor hours from expertise outweighs the higher hourly rate charged
i know of contractors who would triple a bid if they really didnt want the job. sadly, some carpenters and some car repairers seem to share this trait.
