Man... I used to be a valet. I've driven more than my fair share of these. What Mr and Mrs Wizard don't touch on here is the SMELL of that interior. As soon as you open the door, the smell of pure leather, furniture polish, and freshly installed carpet overpowers you in the best possible way. If I'm honest, I'd take this over an Aventador. Yeah, yeah, the Lambo is faster, handles better, blah blah blah. This is more comfortable, quieter, rides like a cloud, has room for your luggage, and is still engaging to drive.

Having owned an older Rolls Royce and constantly going through similar problems , any pleasure of ownership was negated by costs & lack of parts. Prestige is very expensive and hardly worth while.
You've hit the nail on the head. Back in the 1960/70's prestige car makers ended up using parts from the volume producers, before that ended up being taken over by them. For Bentley read VW and for Rolls Royce read BMW.
These old engines luxo barges are suddenly looking very old hat. Their managements are screwing up big time by ignoring any switch to battery electric power.
Found this: 1. Make sure battery is fully charged 2. Lubricate and work the hinges: Open the boot then spray around the hinge pivots with a PTFE lubricant. Quickly open and close the boot repeatedly by hand whilst spraying. This often gets the lid working again and may be enough without doing anything else. 3. Adjust the striker up a few mm and make sure it is central: Press down the two little flaps either side of the striker so you can see the fixing bolts. Try to mark the original position then slacken them enough to move the latch. Bring the boot almost to a close and look to see if the latch is central to the striker. If not then tap if left or right. Then bring it up a couple of mm. Nip the bolts back up and check the boot function. This may change the fit of the boot very slightly, but will reduce the preload on the latch/striker when closing so it is less likely to time out and open again.Then tighten properly. Manually close the boot to rest on the flaps, the boot lid should drop into the latch and power shut with less than 2kg on the back edge of the lid if set correctly. You can remove the plastic cover at the back of the boot to make access to the fixings easier if you wish. Take off the the two luggage tie down screwed to the rear of boot then the panel unclips. 4. Adjust hinges. Last resort. To adjust the hinges you need to loosen the torx headed bolts holding them to the car. This really isn’t something I’d recommend for DIY as they are painted and fiddly to reach so getting the tool in properly is difficult and if they strip then they have to be drilled out. It’s also possible to completely mess up the fit of the boot to the car and not get it to function any better. As a rule the front of the hinge (nearest the rear window) should be higher than the rear to prevent the hinge binding on itself when nearly closed. It’s possible to achieve a range of hinge positions and keep the lid in profile to the body when closed. It’s also important to keep both hinges the broadly same adjustment to avoid the lid twisting on the way down. You can also loosen the hinges on the lid itself to reduce any preload across the car in the setting, again not DIY as the boot can go completely out of profile.
8 year old car. Something is going to fail in that much time. Especially luxury cars that have far more gizmos and gadgets on them to fail. If you want something to go 8 years with no issues, buy a Toyota.
That's what I would do. Most anything that can be assembled, can be disassembled. New gears can be machined if need be, or electronics rebuilt. Someone built it when new, so, someone can rebuild it.
I had a cheap plow that had an electric actuator on it. Plastic gear in the top stripped. I looked up the actuator and it was going to be $400 - $1000 to replace (used vs new). Turns out similar actuators, even from other companies, are made actuators for RV slide outs and all seem to use similar gears. Found a gear online that looked similar. Did some measurements and ordered a gear for $16 off Amazon. Fit perfectly and works awesome. Sometimes you get lucky and can even find a similar sized gear online. So much today is parts bin sharing you never know where else that gear may be used. Maybe avoid the machine shop even!

This takes me back to a book I have from Road & Track magazine called Used Car Classics. Published in the 1980s, it had advice on buying an affordable enthusiast car. It included a glossary of terms found in used car ads. This one comes to mind: Ad term: Loaded Translation: Lots of expensive gadgets that break. This trunk lid gadget seems particularly useless. I'll admit I liked the power hatch on my old company's minivan, but the Bentley's trunk lid is so slow to open, it seems like more of a hindrance even when its working. If I couldn't find someone willing to take a crack at rebuilding the motor, I'd investigate disconnecting the stupid thing and try to bring it up to the standard of, say, a Kia Rio.
That thing sure took its sweet time ascending to the upright position, and it lurched pretty horribly on the way down too. I'd like to know how it compares between now and when new. If it's that lethargic it's more than just gears to rebuild it - there's serious deterioration in the motor itself. No wonder the oem manufacturer went belly up making such garbage for a Bentley. At that price point you don't cheap out.
It's probably slow for safety reasons. If it were fast, it could KO you on the way up and worse in the other direction. That trunk motor is a metaphor for the whole car. A piece of shite with a bentley badge made by some other company.
Reminds me of the 30's and 40's when cars were designed to have flowing lines and unique looks. Nowadays cars are just potato halfs, with different plastic bits popped on.
Have worked on old motorcycles. When you hear from 2-3 sources that, "It doesn't exist. You can't find one, anymore." it is so frustrating. Now, you are on eBay and looking for a used one. Re-furbished? Re-conditioned? You can't trust internet bandits! My pro tip on that trunk motor, is that the design is asymmetric. Look closely at the alignment of the hinges. It may just be torqued over to one side.
This is the second video where a specific part was needed, in this case a trunk motor and the part is totally unavailable. This reminds me of the Car Wizard video where a particular model of Acura needed a new engine and a new engine was totally unavailable. It brings to mind the word unobtainium, that is used for items that can not be obtained.
common as cars become older, I'd love to go order a brand new short block from Honda for my 02 S2000 but they no longer offer it. I don't necessarily need one but in the future I'm hoping they begin to offer them since Mazda still offers 13b motors for the FD RX7
Aftermarket companies need to sell millions of parts to justify the expense of tooling. One alternator might fit literally millions of cars so that's a good business. Trunk motor for a Bentley? Yeah you might sell a hundred of those if you're lucky.

This is in contrast to engine types where millions of engines were built for many models over many years. An example of this is the Chevrolet Small Block V8, which is highly available to this day.
If you have the knowledge, and the motivation, reverse-engineering is a viable business. A friend started his own business, Unobtanium Supply, to remanufacture previously-unavailable plastic Ferrari parts using plastic injection moldings. He does well. People are remanufacturing Obsolete Ferrari electrical components and processors that are currently NLA. If you want your car to stay on the road, you can go to any lengths your imagination and technical expertise will go.
For $1800 I would think a rebuild would be an option. You might have to fabricate a part or two, but it can be done by someone who has the right kind of shop.
Absolutely. I'm surprised that this wasn't the solution given the lack of a realistic alternative ... and sooner, or later the trunk is going to get flooded out when someone forgets to push it down in the rain ... I am also surprised that Bentley didn't do a mod kit to upgrade to the later electric motor, as clearly this is a latent defect in all of those vehicles containing the old electric motor ...

I would take the trunk motor to an alternator/small motor repair company. In my opinion, you light your money on fire when you buy oem all the time. When some companies rebuild better than new.
The issue is the gears or cable inside the motor drive, the gears or cables strip or have missing teeth, hence why it works mostly but has that one spot where it's not functioning properly. One wonders if you can 3d print metal replacement gears for these units

Stopped by to say "hello" to my mechanic. He was in a really good mood because one of his customers had bought a Bentley Azure without asking his advice first. Brought it in for a POST purchase inspection and to "take care of a few little things". Repairs would cost more than he had paid for the thing, of course.

in the computer world, even 25 yo computers get hakers to retro fit USB or IDE into them, and thats a lot more complex than just a motor, why cant cars just use 'any' part that is spec compatible
Of course any repair shop who can deal with motors and mechanisms can repair it. That would be anything from some clock/watch repairers to things like disabled help devices since it looks like its simply an actuator anyway. As a wheelchair user myself I don't find it hard to get adaptions which open/close the doors, trunk or even move the seat on their own made to suit so simply repairing an actuator is childs play. The problem isn't so much having none on tap. Its more the lack of any idea or practicality in the minds of the people looking at the problem.

They're great when you have your hands full or when the car is dirty and you don't want to touch the trunk lid. My elderly mother had difficulty closing her SUV hatch, so she bought the same model with auto closing and she's much happier. If it doesn't work for you, don't buy one. I'm glad it's an option.
My Lexus has a power trunk and I find it annoying, doesn’t wanna close in the winter when there’s snow/ice around the edge and it takes longer to wait for it to open/close itself than to just do it manually.
Yea, it makes more sense on a SUV or hatch with low trunk line, but on that Bentley is purely a statement symbol as the owner most likely has several SUVs more ideal for the task.

Really enjoy theses videos, the channel came long ways since I first watched the wizard, love to see good professionals succeeding! If it wouldn't be such complicated logistics (I live in Brazil), I could easily rebuild that trunk motor in a way that wouldn't be a bother anymore. If I could only find an used one, could use to build a nice rebuild kit, apparently there is a demand for it.
I did some searching, I wonder if it's the latch. It looks like the latch moves up and down to pull the trunk lid down for the final closure, and there could be some spring that's broken causing this issue.
It’s only when you have owned an Audi you understand the Bentley issues….something constantly need’s attention…I now own a Lexus…it doesn’t need fixing every week and the dealers are the most helpful and friendly chaps you could meet (you only see them at service as nothing goes wrong) these "issues" should not be issues in a car of this prestige….it’s just become expected with a VAG group car.
Ultimately, the highest form of luxury is reliability. The expense and inconvenience of repairs negates the craftsmanship and quality of materials in a Bentley. Would this mechanic be praising this vehicle if he was paying for the repairs rather than being paid?
It took me a weekend to rebuild mine that was completely stripped with help from my friend who does metal fabricating just need a few specialized tools
it's probably a sealed unit and trying to repair it means breaking it open, destroying the thing. Why make it serviceable when they can have you wait a year for a super-expensive brand new one that will fail in time, just like this one?

bentlys don't hold great value even low mileage in texas you can get a bently for 30 to 60k with that amount of mileage or even more never buy used bentlys
Car with 34K miles on it requires thousands of dollars in maintenance, headliner fabric is drooping and after that it is still so broken that no money can fix it. What a beautiful design and even more beautiful build quality. LOL. In my book it is called junk (well, very nice looking and fancy junk) which was made in order to support auto repair industry. LMAO
How many other 9 years old cars do you know which haven't had any problems? 35k isn't necessarily a good thing. Low miles is good but ultra low means its been sat a lot which any mechanic will tell you isn't good for a car at all.
I have a '97 911 Turbo S. Only 183ish made. The longest I've ever had to wait for a part is about 2 weeks. And it had to be sent from Germany. But a 9 year old Bentley is unrepairable? That's just sad.
The whole Bentley "hoping we'll have one" deal reminds of the Seinfeld episode at the car rental agency where Jerry has a reservation, but there are no cars for him: "You see, you know how to *take* the reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation. And that's really the most important part of the reservation, the holding. Anybody can just take them..." (writes in the air).
@CarWirard - When you get new components I would check their build date and the quality before installation. Due to so many changes of employees in the factory market there are new people building these parts. In this year alone we've seen many components from manufacturers that are out of specifications or build without any quality to where we either have to modify or remove said "bad" parts from our production floor. I work in a Metals factory building seat frames and I have never seen things this bad from suppliers. Be careful with replacement parts newer than 2019. Thanks for your time!
With cost of parts for this thing, such as that boot motor, you would think they would be of higher quality and not crap out on you. I wonder if the newer model motor could be adapted to fit? I've been known to do that on a few things.
This year and up Continental looks fabulous! I just would like to mention that Automotive manufacturers are responsible to keep making spare parts for 10 years after each model year, now I am not sure if that is still a Federal law or just guidelines, especially now because of Covid and chip and spare parts/components shortages it might be an exception, not to mention the ongoing logistics nightmares. Now with deep digging on the internet, I am sure someone could find a competent company to re-manufacture this part if they had the full electrical/electronic and mechanical schematics from VW Group - Bentley. I can tell you this, the owner of this car should raise this up to Bentley corporate level and see what happens.
The motor is probably good. The real problem are those cheap plastic gears. The teeth wear and break off. Calling it a glorified window motor isn't necessarily true. That "glorified window motor" is designed to control a much heavier rear trunk lid. I bet if someone can 3d print a replacement gear it would probably work again.

Or maybe its because if you have a problem where some idiot hangs off it, jams something in it or otherwise screws it up its much easier and cheaper to replace a plastic gear than the whole mechanism/trunklid/quarter panel mounting point? Same reason you have them in most actuators now. Its an easy to repair failure point if something goes wrong.
35,000 miles and the trunk won’t close? That is amazing, in the fact that my Audi Q7 has 130,000 miles and has only had one part fail, the oil separator was replaced at 129,000 miles….thanks for helping me through a dilemma, I have always wanted a Bentley, well I’m over that now, especially adding this story to a friends story who has a Bentley and is currently rebuilding the engine at 59,000 miles! The wizard performs his magic and saves the day!
I have owned exotics. You can used them as daily drivers but parts are always a problem. Like I have said before, Porsches are as close to an exotic without the parts issue. Generally you take your Porsche in for yearly oil change and checkup for the most part. Usually software downloads are also available at the dealership. My Panamera received a large download last visit.
That really neat Studebaker Lark kept grabbing my attention far more so than the Bentley. Studebakers were always popular here in Australia right back to the very early days of motoring. In the early 60's the Lark model was imported in crates from Indiana and reassembled in Melbourne. They were also used as police cars.
I wonder if the trunk can be manually operated without the motor for a while? If so, I’d collaborate with TH-camr “my mechanics” and send it off to him to be rebuilt. I have no doubt he’d diagnose the issue and rebuild it with improvements that would make it better than new. 👍
@@slagdemon This was my thought - I'd love to get ahold of a broken one and test out gears in CF Polycarbonate on one of my printers. If this owner wants the car in tip-top shape I can understand them not wanting to mess around with 3D printed parts, but definitely seems like a cheap short-term solution until a proper motor can be obtained.
I think my mechanics doing CNC gears could work but if the motor is weakened or worn out, it still might not be right. With a car this nice & valuable its just par for the course unfortunately. If vigilant an owner will wait for a new motor once one can be manufactured. Thats just why these either are collector cars or short term owner-driver. If you plan to daily a car like this youll have nothing but issues

For the trunk motor, what sometimes happens is the company that makes those types of things waits until they have an order of about ten, so then they go and make them (or order them from China). So what you, or the owner should have done, is order several motors (like ten), wait however many months and once you get yours and install it, sell the extra motors yourself on eBay or whatever. Otherwise, you'll just be left hanging, which is exactly what happened to you.
I have that same 2012 Bentley Continental GT Mulliner in black but I just replaced all of the moving body panels with carbon fiber as well as all the lower cladding front, rear and side skirts as well as the automatic rear wing over the trunk lid which is now carbon fiber as well. Mine had the same problem and it was found to be an adjustment since it worked perfectly before the lid was changed to carbon fiber. Nothing wrong with the motor, it just needs some adjustment. Lots of speculating for no reason.
I wonder if you can use the newer motor design (2013 onwards) in the 2012 cars. I have a hunch that the inner fender area and mounting points wouldn't have been different between the 2 years during the transition from company supplierb1 vs supplier 2. Perhaps a wiring pigtail to adapt it to the car?
I wonder if the gear could be 3d printed? The motor and switches seem to work well maybe a 3d printed gear would hold until the new motor assembly arrives.
Yes and no it could throw a silly code and might not work but only way to know is to plug it in and it could have a different speed/resistance so you'd have to replace both

As you started to walk behind the Bentley I was thinking the same thing, wow, what a unique tail. I would stain all of the undercarriage fiber panel to look uniform, and if it didn't fade away it would still look better than the obvious blotches, but then again, it would not be original. No power tools? I doubt an impact tool would even help me. Well done.
If a bentley isn’t serviced, it’s worthless. This Bentley is worth more then others on the market for sure. Worth every penny. I own a bentley gt speed and service is 100% of the value of a used bentley.

As an auto body technician I would say the problem in the rear boot area would be the hinges. More than likely the right rear hinge is worn out. Try taking the hinge out and checking it for for play.
Hello! If the trunk motor problem is related to some gear I can design and 3d print a new one, there are really good filaments today that can be used for this.

Wizard, considering this Bentley is on the VW Phaeton platform, would the Phaeton use that same trunk lid motor? If so, maybe you could get it from VW?
VW discontinued the Phaeton for the US market, the A8L is its closest relative. Yes, the power trunk system on those is hydraulic. One more yes, I never had a single problem with them. The only problem I had with the trunk lids was the retracting cable guides.
35k with way to many problems and my Model Y Zero Issues and it’s faster, Smoother, quieter, cheaper on fuel and a Whole lot less Class unless you equate practicality with class! Just because I value less hassles and more money in my pocket to be a superior feeling! Too many people want to look rich when they are not actually rich! Warren Buffett is a billionaire and he drives a 10 year-old Cadillac CTS or should I say he’s chauffeured in his Cadillac CTS! Another great video by a ACE Mechanic I have so much respect for you! I have 2 HINO Diesels on my 4388 Bayliner and that’s enough wrenching for me and 1 Westerbeke Diesel Generator! 2). 6 hour days to finish and take the oil to the recycling place! Saved $1200
Great video and beautiful car. My concern is, why you didn't change out the plugs. Maybe it would have taken an extra 2 hrs. I would rather pay now then cry later. If you have it off all ready change the plugs.
it's fiddly, but I've pulled apart sealed latch mechanisms in the past for cars, replaced gears, or the (surprisingly generic) motors, or motor brushes inside.... it the customer is not shy of the cost.. it might do to just delve in and fix it yourself, then replace it fully when you get the part

A car that expensive & relatively low miles needed all that work? Thankfully there's people like the Car Wizard. I worked for a Jaguar, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Land Rover dealership. The vehicles I fantasized about as a young kid I quickly grew to hate. Overengineered garbage! Like we always said in car business there's an @$$ for every seat! I have 30yr old cars that the original headliner is still intact!
That owner is very lucky to drive that long. One of my friends bought brand new Bentley 2021, has 4 problems in first 4 weeks (less than a thousand miles). These are static art, not meant to move around. If you have not done enough research and make decision, good luck. Also, there is a reason why that engine company no longer exists.
Such a beauty .. also the grill in silver tone in tone ... so gorgeous ... have driven Jaguar Daimler and Jaguar XJS (both V12). Driving such noble Britsh high end cars is not driving, is gliding ... just pitty that repairings are so tricky (and huge expensive). But so it is with expensive men's toys.if you buy a Porsche, a regular inspection can cost u up to 12,000 or more.
I suspect he barely has time to do these fluff videos, never mind a full time camera crew to shoot and edit hours upon hours of mechanical work. Watch Legitstreetcars or multitudes of other channels if you want that.
In addition to what's already been mention, I think i remember him once saying that making that kind of videos takes too much time away from actually doing the work for his customers. I can easily imagine a job that normally takes an hour would take St least twice as much if he were to film it. Personally I get my fix for that kind of content from Eric O of South Main Auto .
Kids and small adults fit back there fine. Who wants a huge coupe with no back seat? Not me, but then I'd never buy this car anyway. You can buy a solid used trouble-free car for the price of the service on this Bentley.

The trunk motor is the same mechanism as the audi a8 d3. The clutch plates end up slipping, but if you add either solder Flux paste or violin rosin between the 2 plates it will stop the clutch plates slipping. The soft close isn't working which is likely a broken spring on the striker latch plate. That's why it's not closing properly.
They made it weak so you come back to pay the dealership again and again until your money go down and CEO of Bentley/or creator Bentley account increasely.
I'm looking at a one owner 2004 with 21,000 miles. Everything works, interior and exterior are immaculate except for a few stone chips. It isn't the least expensive 2004 available but I think the price reflects the condition and mileage. My one concern is that it doesn't have enough miles for its age - just over 1,000 miles per year. It has a clear CarFax and spent its life in a dry environment.
A Bently, just like a Range Rover or even a Rolls Royce, is a very expensive status symbol, but as a car it is junk. A Toyota Corolla is much more reliable and better made than that Bentley, for a fraction of the price. As for parts, those will always be a problem on rare and expensive cars.
Nothing junky about that Bentley. It has a stunning exterior design, beautiful interior and is made with premium materials. The suspension feels like you are driving on a cloud. That trunk motor will get fixed and all will be good again. A Corolla is a plastic piece of crap for an 18 year old flipping burgers at Mickey D's. You don't have a clue of what you are talking about.

Wizard if your really keen pull it apart if you find the gear which is damaged get it 3 d printed , I know a lot of people who have had many obsolete parts from various makes and models made via 3 d printing , just another option!
From the video it looks like the passenger side of the trunk lid starts to rise before the driver side. So it seems the motor would have less travel going back down. It looks more like an adjustment or resetting the limits on the motor. kinda like window motors on 350z’s that move up and down slightly when you open and close the doors. Also I like Mrs Wizards comments and she has a good voice and tone.

Everybody knows that, if you want a trouble free, easy and inexpensive-to-fix Bentley, get yourself a 1990 Turbo R. They're bulletproof and practically fix themselves.
Excellent point.. sub-contractoring out that motor for the trunk is fine .. but VW Gm Fiat etc. should have all technical designs on file for situations like this..
I like a Bentley. But, to me a proper Bentley is the Mulsanne Speed or Turbo Rs. The 1950-1952 Bentley Continental S1 and S2 are great looking cars as well and a proper GT car is an Aston-Martin. James May and Richard Hammond from the better Top Gear trio each had fun with similar Conti-GTs. May rode along in Conti-GT while a Rally driver took it through a Rally stage course in Wales. Hammond took a yellow Conti-GT to Australia and raced it up the inside of an iron ore mine. That was fun to watch.
After watching the Wizard and his crew for three years, I would say if the Wizard can't fix a car, it's because it can't be fixed. By anyone. Bentleys are beautiful cars, but they all have one design flaw: anything touched by an oxygen molecule is goine to break.
Man... I used to be a valet. I've driven more than my fair share of these. What Mr and Mrs Wizard don't touch on here is the SMELL of that interior. As soon as you open the door, the smell of pure leather, furniture polish, and freshly installed carpet overpowers you in the best possible way. If I'm honest, I'd take this over an Aventador. Yeah, yeah, the Lambo is faster, handles better, blah blah blah. This is more comfortable, quieter, rides like a cloud, has room for your luggage, and is still engaging to drive.

Having owned an older Rolls Royce and constantly going through similar problems , any pleasure of ownership was negated by costs & lack of parts. Prestige is very expensive and hardly worth while.
You've hit the nail on the head. Back in the 1960/70's prestige car makers ended up using parts from the volume producers, before that ended up being taken over by them. For Bentley read VW and for Rolls Royce read BMW.

The boot (trunk) struts on my 20 Yr old Renault failed . I now hold it up with my head
Found this:
1. Make sure battery is fully charged
2. Lubricate and work the hinges:
Open the boot then spray around the hinge pivots with a PTFE lubricant. Quickly open and close the boot repeatedly by hand whilst spraying. This often gets the lid working again and may be enough without doing anything else.
3. Adjust the striker up a few mm and make sure it is central:
Press down the two little flaps either side of the striker so you can see the fixing bolts. Try to mark the original position then slacken them enough to move the latch. Bring the boot almost to a close and look to see if the latch is central to the striker. If not then tap if left or right. Then bring it up a couple of mm. Nip the bolts back up and check the boot function. This may change the fit of the boot very slightly, but will reduce the preload on the latch/striker when closing so it is less likely to time out and open again.Then tighten properly. Manually close the boot to rest on the flaps, the boot lid should drop into the latch and power shut with less than 2kg on the back edge of the lid if set correctly.
You can remove the plastic cover at the back of the boot to make access to the fixings easier if you wish. Take off the the two luggage tie down screwed to the rear of boot then the panel unclips.
4. Adjust hinges. Last resort.
To adjust the hinges you need to loosen the torx headed bolts holding them to the car. This really isn’t something I’d recommend for DIY as they are painted and fiddly to reach so getting the tool in properly is difficult and if they strip then they have to be drilled out. It’s also possible to completely mess up the fit of the boot to the car and not get it to function any better.
As a rule the front of the hinge (nearest the rear window) should be higher than the rear to prevent the hinge binding on itself when nearly closed. It’s possible to achieve a range of hinge positions and keep the lid in profile to the body when closed. It’s also important to keep both hinges the broadly same adjustment to avoid the lid twisting on the way down. You can also loosen the hinges on the lid itself to reduce any preload across the car in the setting, again not DIY as the boot can go completely out of profile.

8 year old car. Something is going to fail in that much time. Especially luxury cars that have far more gizmos and gadgets on them to fail. If you want something to go 8 years with no issues, buy a Toyota.
At this rate probably easier to disassemble the motor assembly, find the bad gear and have a machine shop make a new one in aluminum!

That's what I would do. Most anything that can be assembled, can be disassembled. New gears can be machined if need be, or electronics rebuilt. Someone built it when new, so, someone can rebuild it.
I had a cheap plow that had an electric actuator on it. Plastic gear in the top stripped. I looked up the actuator and it was going to be $400 - $1000 to replace (used vs new). Turns out similar actuators, even from other companies, are made actuators for RV slide outs and all seem to use similar gears.
Found a gear online that looked similar. Did some measurements and ordered a gear for $16 off Amazon. Fit perfectly and works awesome.
Sometimes you get lucky and can even find a similar sized gear online. So much today is parts bin sharing you never know where else that gear may be used. Maybe avoid the machine shop even!

This takes me back to a book I have from Road & Track magazine called Used Car Classics. Published in the 1980s, it had advice on buying an affordable enthusiast car. It included a glossary of terms found in used car ads. This one comes to mind:
Ad term: Loaded
Translation: Lots of expensive gadgets that break.
This trunk lid gadget seems particularly useless. I'll admit I liked the power hatch on my old company's minivan, but the Bentley's trunk lid is so slow to open, it seems like more of a hindrance even when its working. If I couldn't find someone willing to take a crack at rebuilding the motor, I'd investigate disconnecting the stupid thing and try to bring it up to the standard of, say, a Kia Rio.
That thing sure took its sweet time ascending to the upright position, and it lurched pretty horribly on the way down too. I'd like to know how it compares between now and when new. If it's that lethargic it's more than just gears to rebuild it - there's serious deterioration in the motor itself. No wonder the oem manufacturer went belly up making such garbage for a Bentley. At that price point you don't cheap out.
It's probably slow for safety reasons. If it were fast, it could KO you on the way up and worse in the other direction. That trunk motor is a metaphor for the whole car. A piece of shite with a bentley badge made by some other company.

Have worked on old motorcycles. When you hear from 2-3 sources that, "It doesn't exist. You can't find one, anymore." it is so frustrating. Now, you are on eBay and looking for a used one. Re-furbished? Re-conditioned? You can't trust internet bandits!
My pro tip on that trunk motor, is that the design is asymmetric. Look closely at the alignment of the hinges. It may just be torqued over to one side.
I had that issue with my Bentley trunk too. The bracket was misaligned. I adjusted the alignment and it fixed it.
This is the second video where a specific part was needed, in this case a trunk motor and the part is totally unavailable. This reminds me of the Car Wizard video where a particular model of Acura needed a new engine and a new engine was totally unavailable. It brings to mind the word unobtainium, that is used for items that can not be obtained.

Aftermarket companies need to sell millions of parts to justify the expense of tooling. One alternator might fit literally millions of cars so that's a good business. Trunk motor for a Bentley? Yeah you might sell a hundred of those if you're lucky.

This is in contrast to engine types where millions of engines were built for many models over many years. An example of this is the Chevrolet Small Block V8, which is highly available to this day.
If you have the knowledge, and the motivation, reverse-engineering is a viable business. A friend started his own business, Unobtanium Supply, to remanufacture previously-unavailable plastic Ferrari parts using plastic injection moldings. He does well. People are remanufacturing Obsolete Ferrari electrical components and processors that are currently NLA. If you want your car to stay on the road, you can go to any lengths your imagination and technical expertise will go.
For $1800 I would think a rebuild would be an option. You might have to fabricate a part or two, but it can be done by someone who has the right kind of shop.

In my opinion, you light your money on fire when you buy oem all the time. When some companies rebuild better than new.
The issue is the gears or cable inside the motor drive, the gears or cables strip or have missing teeth, hence why it works mostly but has that one spot where it's not functioning properly. One wonders if you can 3d print metal replacement gears for these units

Of course any repair shop who can deal with motors and mechanisms can repair it. That would be anything from some clock/watch repairers to things like disabled help devices since it looks like its simply an actuator anyway.
As a wheelchair user myself I don't find it hard to get adaptions which open/close the doors, trunk or even move the seat on their own made to suit so simply repairing an actuator is childs play.
The problem isn't so much having none on tap. Its more the lack of any idea or practicality in the minds of the people looking at the problem.

I've always thought Auto closing and opening trunks was a stupid idea.
My moms Lexus RX crushed me one T.T hate them so much. Tho at times I guess its handy. But still prefer normal.
They're great when you have your hands full or when the car is dirty and you don't want to touch the trunk lid. My elderly mother had difficulty closing her SUV hatch, so she bought the same model with auto closing and she's much happier. If it doesn't work for you, don't buy one. I'm glad it's an option.
My Lexus has a power trunk and I find it annoying, doesn’t wanna close in the winter when there’s snow/ice around the edge and it takes longer to wait for it to open/close itself than to just do it manually.
Yea, it makes more sense on a SUV or hatch with low trunk line, but on that Bentley is purely a statement symbol as the owner most likely has several SUVs more ideal for the task.
Nothing beats the spring loaded trucks of the old cars where all you had to do was unlock it and the spring would open it for you.

I did some searching, I wonder if it's the latch. It looks like the latch moves up and down to pull the trunk lid down for the final closure, and there could be some spring that's broken causing this issue.
I was thinking some minor obstruction or linkage binding. Maybe do some cleaning/lubing and see what happens.
It’s only when you have owned an Audi you understand the Bentley issues….something constantly need’s attention…I now own a Lexus…it doesn’t need fixing every week and the dealers are the most helpful and friendly chaps you could meet (you only see them at service as nothing goes wrong) these "issues" should not be issues in a car of this prestige….it’s just become expected with a VAG group car.

I have a '97 911 Turbo S. Only 183ish made. The longest I've ever had to wait for a part is about 2 weeks. And it had to be sent from Germany. But a 9 year old Bentley is unrepairable? That's just sad.

A lot of auto parts are not available right now. Trunk motor will be available next year.
The whole Bentley "hoping we'll have one" deal reminds of the Seinfeld episode at the car rental agency where Jerry has a reservation, but there are no cars for him: "You see, you know how to *take* the reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation. And that's really the most important part of the reservation, the holding. Anybody can just take them..." (writes in the air).
@CarWirard - When you get new components I would check their build date and the quality before installation. Due to so many changes of employees in the factory market there are new people building these parts. In this year alone we've seen many components from manufacturers that are out of specifications or build without any quality to where we either have to modify or remove said "bad" parts from our production floor. I work in a Metals factory building seat frames and I have never seen things this bad from suppliers. Be careful with replacement parts newer than 2019. Thanks for your time!

This year and up Continental looks fabulous! I just would like to mention that Automotive manufacturers are responsible to keep making spare parts for 10 years after each model year, now I am not sure if that is still a Federal law or just guidelines, especially now because of Covid and chip and spare parts/components shortages it might be an exception, not to mention the ongoing logistics nightmares. Now with deep digging on the internet, I am sure someone could find a competent company to re-manufacture this part if they had the full electrical/electronic and mechanical schematics from VW Group - Bentley. I can tell you this, the owner of this car should raise this up to Bentley corporate level and see what happens.

The motor is probably good. The real problem are those cheap plastic gears. The teeth wear and break off. Calling it a glorified window motor isn't necessarily true. That "glorified window motor" is designed to control a much heavier rear trunk lid.
I bet if someone can 3d print a replacement gear it would probably work again.

Same reason you have them in most actuators now. Its an easy to repair failure point if something goes wrong.
35,000 miles and the trunk won’t close? That is amazing, in the fact that my Audi Q7 has 130,000 miles and has only had one part fail, the oil separator was replaced at 129,000 miles….thanks for helping me through a dilemma, I have always wanted a Bentley, well I’m over that now, especially adding this story to a friends story who has a Bentley and is currently rebuilding the engine at 59,000 miles! The wizard performs his magic and saves the day!

I have owned exotics. You can used them as daily drivers but parts are always a problem. Like I have said before, Porsches are as close to an exotic without the parts issue. Generally you take your Porsche in for yearly oil change and checkup for the most part. Usually software downloads are also available at the dealership. My Panamera received a large download last visit.

That really neat Studebaker Lark kept grabbing my attention far more so than the Bentley. Studebakers were always popular here in Australia right back to the very early days of motoring. In the early 60's the Lark model was imported in crates from Indiana and reassembled in Melbourne. They were also used as police cars.
I remarked on that! In the background this Lark. The polar opposite of that fancy, dancy, over-complicated Bentley.

I wonder if the trunk can be manually operated without the motor for a while? If so, I’d collaborate with TH-camr “my mechanics” and send it off to him to be rebuilt. I have no doubt he’d diagnose the issue and rebuild it with improvements that would make it better than new. 👍
I don't think it would be too tough to take that motor apart and 3d model a gear printed out of ABS that anyone with a $150 3d printer could create.
Not sure if the motor is a problem because problematic side open first not last, more likely some parts are misaligned in that area.

If this owner wants the car in tip-top shape I can understand them not wanting to mess around with 3D printed parts, but definitely seems like a cheap short-term solution until a proper motor can be obtained.

I think my mechanics doing CNC gears could work but if the motor is weakened or worn out, it still might not be right. With a car this nice & valuable its just par for the course unfortunately. If vigilant an owner will wait for a new motor once one can be manufactured. Thats just why these either are collector cars or short term owner-driver. If you plan to daily a car like this youll have nothing but issues

For the trunk motor, what sometimes happens is the company that makes those types of things waits until they have an order of about ten, so then they go and make them (or order them from China). So what you, or the owner should have done, is order several motors (like ten), wait however many months and once you get yours and install it, sell the extra motors yourself on eBay or whatever. Otherwise, you'll just be left hanging, which is exactly what happened to you.
Who has the specs to make them? The original manufacturer no longer exists
I have that same 2012 Bentley Continental GT Mulliner in black but I just replaced all of the moving body panels with carbon fiber as well as all the lower cladding front, rear and side skirts as well as the automatic rear wing over the trunk lid which is now carbon fiber as well. Mine had the same problem and it was found to be an adjustment since it worked perfectly before the lid was changed to carbon fiber. Nothing wrong with the motor, it just needs some adjustment. Lots of speculating for no reason.
I wonder if you can use the newer motor design (2013 onwards) in the 2012 cars. I have a hunch that the inner fender area and mounting points wouldn't have been different between the 2 years during the transition from company supplierb1 vs supplier 2. Perhaps a wiring pigtail to adapt it to the car?

Yes and no it could throw a silly code and might not work but only way to know is to plug it in and it could have a different speed/resistance so you'd have to replace both

As you started to walk behind the Bentley I was thinking the same thing, wow, what a unique tail. I would stain all of the undercarriage fiber panel to look uniform, and if it didn't fade away it would still look better than the obvious blotches, but then again, it would not be original. No power tools? I doubt an impact tool would even help me. Well done.

If a bentley isn’t serviced, it’s worthless. This Bentley is worth more then others on the market for sure. Worth every penny. I own a bentley gt speed and service is 100% of the value of a used bentley.

As an auto body technician I would say the problem in the rear boot area would be the hinges. More than likely the right rear hinge is worn out. Try taking the hinge out and checking it for for play.

Wizard, considering this Bentley is on the VW Phaeton platform, would the Phaeton use that same trunk lid motor? If so, maybe you could get it from VW?
Most VW group parts for this car are from Audi. I had to replace windshield wiper motor, exact part number to A8.
It is not the same. The Phaeton uses a hydraulic system.
VW discontinued the Phaeton for the US market, the A8L is its closest relative. Yes, the power trunk system on those is hydraulic. One more yes, I never had a single problem with them.
The only problem I had with the trunk lids was the retracting cable guides.

Great video and beautiful car. My concern is, why you didn't change out the plugs. Maybe it would have taken an extra 2 hrs. I would rather pay now then cry later. If you have it off all ready change the plugs.

it's fiddly, but I've pulled apart sealed latch mechanisms in the past for cars, replaced gears, or the (surprisingly generic) motors, or motor brushes inside.... it the customer is not shy of the cost.. it might do to just delve in and fix it yourself, then replace it fully when you get the part

A car that expensive & relatively low miles needed all that work? Thankfully there's people like the Car Wizard. I worked for a Jaguar, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Land Rover dealership. The vehicles I fantasized about as a young kid I quickly grew to hate. Overengineered garbage! Like we always said in car business there's an @$$ for every seat! That owner is very lucky to drive that long. One of my friends bought brand new Bentley 2021, has 4 problems in first 4 weeks (less than a thousand miles). These are static art, not meant to move around. If you have not done enough research and make decision, good luck. Also, there is a reason why that engine company no longer exists.
Such a beauty .. also the grill in silver tone in tone ... so gorgeous ... have driven Jaguar Daimler and Jaguar XJS (both V12). Driving such noble Britsh high end cars is not driving, is gliding ... just pitty that repairings are so tricky (and huge expensive). But so it is with expensive men's toys.if you buy a Porsche, a regular inspection can cost u up to 12,000 or more.

I suspect he barely has time to do these fluff videos, never mind a full time camera crew to shoot and edit hours upon hours of mechanical work. Watch Legitstreetcars or multitudes of other channels if you want that.
In addition to what's already been mention, I think i remember him once saying that making that kind of videos takes too much time away from actually doing the work for his customers. I can easily imagine a job that normally takes an hour would take St least twice as much if he were to film it.
Personally I get my fix for that kind of content from Eric O of South Main Auto .

Kids and small adults fit back there fine. Who wants a huge coupe with no back seat? Not me, but then I'd never buy this car anyway. You can buy a solid used trouble-free car for the price of the service on this Bentley.

The trunk motor is the same mechanism as the audi a8 d3. The clutch plates end up slipping, but if you add either solder Flux paste or violin rosin between the 2 plates it will stop the clutch plates slipping.
The soft close isn't working which is likely a broken spring on the striker latch plate. That's why it's not closing properly.
There is a company in the UK that repair the boot motors for these cars

I'm looking at a one owner 2004 with 21,000 miles. Everything works, interior and exterior are immaculate except for a few stone chips. It isn't the least expensive 2004 available but I think the price reflects the condition and mileage. My one concern is that it doesn't have enough miles for its age - just over 1,000 miles per year. It has a clear CarFax and spent its life in a dry environment.

A Bently, just like a Range Rover or even a Rolls Royce, is a very expensive status symbol, but as a car it is junk. A Toyota Corolla is much more reliable and better made than that Bentley, for a fraction of the price. As for parts, those will always be a problem on rare and expensive cars.
Nothing junky about that Bentley. It has a stunning exterior design, beautiful interior and is made with premium materials. The suspension feels like you are driving on a cloud. That trunk motor will get fixed and all will be good again. A Corolla is a plastic piece of crap for an 18 year old flipping burgers at Mickey D's. You don't have a clue of what you are talking about.

Wizard if your really keen pull it apart if you find the gear which is damaged get it 3 d printed , I know a lot of people who have had many obsolete parts from various makes and models made via 3 d printing , just another option!
From the video it looks like the passenger side of the trunk lid starts to rise before the driver side. So it seems the motor would have less travel going back down. It looks more like an adjustment or resetting the limits on the motor. kinda like window motors on 350z’s that move up and down slightly when you open and close the doors.
Also I like Mrs Wizards comments and she has a good voice and tone.

Excellent point.. sub-contractoring out that motor for the trunk is fine .. but VW Gm Fiat etc. should have all technical designs on file for situations like this..
I like a Bentley. But, to me a proper Bentley is the Mulsanne Speed or Turbo Rs. The 1950-1952 Bentley Continental S1 and S2 are great looking cars as well and a proper GT car is an Aston-Martin. James May and Richard Hammond from the better Top Gear trio each had fun with similar Conti-GTs. May rode along in Conti-GT while a Rally driver took it through a Rally stage course in Wales. Hammond took a yellow Conti-GT to Australia and raced it up the inside of an iron ore mine. That was fun to watch.
After watching the Wizard and his crew for three years, I would say if the Wizard can't fix a car, it's because it can't be fixed. By anyone.
