Fujifilm GFX100S / GFX100 SUPER BIASED (BUT STILL TOTALLY HONEST) REVIEW. WHAT IS MEDIUM FORMAT?

  • WHY DOES THIS CAMERA GET SO MUCH HYPE? Honestly, whether you're a full framer, a die hard cropped sensor shooter, a hipster rangefinder street photog, or you really nerd out over good solid camera talk this review is well - biased. I've shot every system, I've shot nearly every camera and there's a clear reason why the GFX system from Fujifilm is better. That reason? You totally have to watch this video to hear me explain it.
    From beautiful fall off to crisp sharp autofocus and maybe best of all a shooting experience that feels more like art than holding the newest (S) Calculator or (C) computer. This camera just feels like it was designed by photographers - for photographers.

    Hey there! Just got into the gfx system and happy I found your channel. Especially the way you talk about this system rooted in the “art” vs only the tech side of photography. I wonder what your POV is on the 32-64 zoom.

    A photographer is a data collector. An image is information and the entire point of taking a photo is to record this information. The larger the file size the better because a larger file means you are harvesting more of what you are after.

    It's definitely overlooked how much ISO you can get away with on a MF sensor. It's awesome.

    Great video! Thank you! I’m strongly considering jumping to the GFX 50s ii from my Sony system. How do you feel about that model? Do I NEED to spend the extra 2k for the 100s? I’ll do mostly environmental portrait and street kind of things.

    • @mileswittboyer.photoco

      Hey man! It’s a hard question to answer because I don’t want to sound like a salesman. That said - I strongly recommend the 100s. It’s not the extra 50mp at all - the dynamic range between the two cameras is almost identical, the key difference really is in th autofocus system especially for street work.

    This was dope man. I am actually really interested in using a GFX system and def will get there eventually but I'd actually really want to use it for video purposes along side photo. I think Medium Format video is def something different. And like you one thing I love about fuji is that I have something that inspires me to create and show images the way I see the world. So it would be really interesting to see how well, video comes into play with the GFX. Best place to rent/borrow GFX?

    What a good rational review. I've the 50r and it's awsome. However the 50s 2 is in my sights pure and simply for the ibis. A lot of my most successful shots were handheld winning national competitions and just getting work published, however I still need a tripod for many of my shots. Regards, Barrie

    Miles, thanks for sharing your insight! I'll be honest, I've been shooting with Sony for the past two years or so and I don't love the user experience. I get great results but it does feel very sterile and lacks a certain appeal for me. When I switched from shooting the Sony A7iii (24mp) to the A7RIV (61mp), my biggest complaint was not the storage space but rather how much my lap top (I believe a 2019 or 2020 Mac book pro) processed the files at suuuuuch a sluggish pace. Do you notice that with your experience using the GFX 50 or 100S? I'm very drawn to the GFX 50SII but I hesitate that I'll find the same sluggish workflow on the computer and I'm not sure my finances can handle the computer upgrade at the moment😅. I'd love to hear your thoughts and experience on the processing speed with these files on your computer. Thanks again for taking the time to offer your experience. Love your work!

    • @mileswittboyer.photoco
      @mileswittboyer.photoco  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Daniel! Such a great question. Listen - the truth is - YES. The editing software we're working with these days is pushing the processors for all their worth reading these large files. BUT there's work arounds for sure. First off, the M1Pro and M1Max really do an amazing job and though I can always tell when I'm asking my computer to do a LOT with an image, I process tens of thousands of images through these cameras and have gotten really used to the pace. Secondly - working off of smart previews is a must. It speeds up the workflow SO much. So - import the images, create smart previews over night - and give yourself, and your computer some breathing room.

    No it wasn't a middle finger it was understanding that there wasn't really room in the market for another also ran FF system. So realizing this Fuji decided to serve a neglected, under developed, in desperate need of innovation and competition market. That being medium format. In MF Fuji is the ONLY option for pretty much everyone who doesn't have high end clients demanding a Phase One or Hasslebald out of long standing, traditional, heavily ingrained ideas about what is the best. And that's true even if you have the money to easily afford Phase One or Hasselblad systems. Because you lose very little IQ vs say an IQ4 back by going gfx100 or 100S. But gain a camera that is way more ergonomic, has IBIS, has IS in some lenses, has weather resistance in both the bodies and lenses, is built to be rugged and durable, has AF that is not only usable but very, very good for everything but sports/action, has much smaller lenses, and has bodies the size of FF systems. Overall the GFX100 and 100S cameras are just a way, way better set of tradeoffs for 99.9% of potential MF customers even if they were the same price as Phase One or Hasselbald backs. At such low prices they are no brainers. By taking everything they learned making small APS--C cameras and applying it to MF, Fuji owned the MF market overnight in what was the best business decision in the camera industry we've seen in a very long time. But a FF system would have just been Fuji's flavor of one, offered nothing new and exciting, been instantly behind everyone else on lenses, and only appealed to the small number of fuji's already very limited market who were waiting for it. Everyone else is already on Nikon, Canon, or Sony at this point. That is why the went with MF over FF. FF would have been suicide and MF was a soft pitch grand slam that has secured Fuji's place in the market.

    • @josh885
      @josh885 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adnan_velic Cool story. But I never said no one would buy Fuji FF. Just that not enough would be interested for it for it to be a good idea for fuji to make it. They would spend a lot of money developing the system and than probably not make it back fast enough if at all. A FF fuji would only appeal to people who HAVE to have FF and HAVE to have a Fuji. Which is a tiny tiny niche of the already shrinking camera market. But the GFX appeals almost every commercial, fine art, landscape, ect photographer and is well with in reach for most of them unlike a Phase One. Rather than loosing thier shirt on an also ran FF system they dominated the MF market over night. It's pretty much not up for debate that Fuji made the right call.

    Fujifilm cameras are the best for photography in my opinion. If I was not a filmmaker first and foremost I would still be shooting on my XT30. The only problem with the XT30 for video is that on 4K video the Rolling Shutter is absolutely abysmal. But for photography that does not matter as much and the image is unreal.

    Love those colors. To be fair GFX lacks of bright 400/2.8, 600/4, 800/5.6. So nothing for long telephoto. And actually long reach goes not only for wildlife, I love mountains landscapes with 500 and 600 mm.

    I've been with Fuji since the original X100 and X-pro, and will stick with it to the end. They have come a long way. And skipping the FF market was a good call. Canon dominates it anyway. What they do lack, is an affordable barebones MF camera for a travelling man. There is zero chance I'm taking something like GFX on a 3 week trip of shooting with me. So I stick with XT4/XS10. But IQ is not on par with FF competition. But it is what it is.

    The GFX100s is a camera that delivers beautiful images, but AF is accurate but ok. I am lucky to have the best of both words; a Nikon Z9 for AF and fast work and the GFX100s for image quality. The Nikon is fast and has great, but harsh IQ; the fuji is slow but has beautiful, smooth IQ. I love them both.

      @@morgankarno7335 For me harsh and smooth are the the best words to describe the difference in IQ between the Nikon and GFX. When you put images of both camera's next to each other at the same size, the files of the GFX look silky and smooth with more detail. The Nikon files are great, very sharp (also because of the marvellous Z-lenses), but just don't have the silky, smooth look of the GFX files.

      It’s part of the Fujifilm propaganda. There’s another GFX user on TH-cam (Dee something…) who flat out denied that the difference between APS-C and FF was bigger than the difference between FF and Mini medium format. When I ran through the maths, he then said it didn’t matter and that the image quality disparity was much bigger. When I produced evidence to the contrary, he deleted that post!
      As it happens, I’m thinking of getting a GFX100s and selling my Sony gear. I just need to sell all of my Sony stuff first. What the community doesn’t need are justifications based on misinformation, lies and half-truths. The camera is good enough to justify based on its own merits.

    most cameras coming out from the “previously big 3”, Nikon, Canon, Sony, are being produced NOT with the photographer in mind, but with the bottom line of their producer in mind. it’s boring, never ending, and completely diaregards the actual art of photography. Fuji has fortunately not (yet?) pandered to the “Sony way of life” in this regard
