We live on Sydney's Upper North Shore, the happy home for funnel web spiders. You probably won't see a funnel web every day, but we certainly do several times a year. You have to be ultra cautious when gardening, making sure to wear thick leather gloves, solid boots and so forth. When we can, we catch them and take them to the emergency section of a nearby public hospital. From there, they're collected and taken to a spider holiday home. They're milked for their venom which becomes the anti-venene. Never needed to find out ourselves, but understand that the anti-venene is very effective.

Northern Tree Funnelweb (Hadronyche Formidabilis) is actually believed to have higher potency and and has a higher envenomation rate than Atrax Robustus (Sydney Funnelweb). Also, female Sydney's have never caused a single envenomation, it's only males which have 6x more concentrated delta-atracotoxin. Still, absolutely formidable spiders that should be treated with respect, but not mindless fear. Awesome video footage

You probably won't see any large spiders unless you go looking for them.
And in the case of the Atracidea (three genres of funnel webs with life threatening venom) the common names gives you a clue as to where the spiders prefer to stay: their web.
They can't climb well, they can't run that great and are nearly blind.
Showing themselves off and biting tourists isn't on their to do list.

I've had plenty of these in my pool when I was a boy in Northern Sydney, if you are backed onto the bush you should see them. They burrow during Winter but during Summer the males are out and about looking for females. The males are smaller but more Venomous. Not to fear, luckily its the 'Sydney' funnel web. So your in the area with the best healthcare, so you will be rushed to hospital and get anti-venom asap. Rarely would someone die. But you could if you don't get the anti-venom.

I recently encountered what I think was a young funnel web, it was sitting idle on the concrete walking track beside the Nepean River, I thought I should help it off the path in case someone trod on it or a bird ate it, so I placed a decent sized leaf in front of it and encouraged it to get on it so I could put it back into the bush that borders the pathway, I was very surprised by the absolute ferocity of the spiders response, I only started suspecting that it was a funnel web when it began to strike it's infamous pose, standing on it's back legs and lunging aggressively at the leaf,
Still not appreciating the potential danger I tried to push it onto the leaf with my finger, finger nail first, this little thing spun around so quickly that it head butted my nail twice before I could react,
I eventually flicked it back into the bush,
I underestimated this spider because of it's size, I won't do that again, I have never witnessed the sheer aggression like this thing displayed before, and wouldn't like to encounter an adult, be very aware!!

In the event of a bite Brazilian wandering spiders have a rate of significant envenomation of about 1% while Sydney funnel webs have a rate of significant envenomation of around 17%. Even then darling downs, southern tree funnel webs and northern tree funnel webs are all well above the 50% range according to this: www.mja.com.au/journal/2005/182/8/funnel-web-spider-bite-systematic-review-recorded-clinical-cases

First, Phoneutria nigriventer (the main species responsible for accidents), contains two toxic fractions lethal to primates, PhTx-1 and PhTx-2, the LD50 for a 70kg adult human is ony 6.3 mg, however, nigriventer has only 1-2 mg in its glands and usually delivers 0.4 mg (400 MICROgrams), and in my opinion the most venomous spiders in the world are the Chilean recluse and the sand spider, I will explain: The Chilean recluse is small, has small fangs and injects a small amount of venom, but even with small amounts of venom still responsible for high rates of severe envenoming, for exemple in Peru (27.2%) in Chile (18.8%) and in the state of Santa Catarina in Brazil (13.1%) if it was able to produce and inject quantities similar to that of Atrax and Hadronyche that rate would be much higher, the chilean recluse was responsible by a mortality rate of 18% for those over 13 years old, and 50% for those under 13 years old in Peru, in Santiago, Chile, had a mortality rate of 19.2%, what makes the Chilean recluse so toxic is the fact that it produces a dense magnitude of sphingomyelinase D, an enzyme that is only found in the sand spider and some bacteria, the proteolytic action dissolves the tissues, and causes a necrotic ulcer up to 25 cm in diameter in severe cases, but here's the worst part, the hemolytic toxin can cause intravascular hemolysis, a rupture of red blood cells within a vascular space, releasing excess hemoglobin in the plasma, the kidneys end up filtrand the blood and excrete hemoglobin in the urine, the problem is that this protein causes acute turbular necrosis (death of the cells that form the renal tubules) this results in acute renal failure, which is the most dangerous complication, but expect there are others, like thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) and disseminated intravascular coagulation, a condition where blood clots form throughout the body blocking small blood vessels, clotting factors, as well as platelets are depleted and the person may experience bleeding, but also lack of air, chest tightness and death from multiple organ failure in Brazil, deaths from cardiorespiratory arrest have been reported, the antidote exists, but it does not work 100%, with deaths occurring even after its application. In the case of the sand spider it would be much worse, the two spiders themselves have almost the same venom, but the sand spider is larger and can inject larger amounts, so its bite would be much more massive, but luckily it is not an important one cause of accidents, only one case was officially confirmed, and it occurred in South America, where a 17-year-old boy developed a dermonecrotic lesion after a bite of Sicarius tropicus, and there are two suspected cases in Africa, in one of which the victim lost his limb dermonecrosis, and in the other the victim died of massive hemorrhage, and there is no antidote, but it is worth remembering that not all sand spiders are lethal, in Latin America there are 21 species, only 6 Latin species have been studied, of these 6, only Sicarius ornatus showed high toxicity, while in Africa they are all lethal. It is also worth remembering that the Chilean recluse is not the only lethal, Loxosceles intemedia and Loxosceles gaucho are also responsible for high rates of serious envenoming, including deaths. Now let's talk about the deaths, only in the state of Parana, Brazil, from 1993 to 2000, there were 7 deaths, from 2009 to 2010 13 deaths, in 2013, 36 deaths, in 2015 more 30, and in 2017 another 30, in 2019, only in November, in less than ten days, two people died, both in the south of Brazil (probably bitten by Loxosceles laeta, Loxosceles iintermedia or gaucho), which are common there. They received treatment and antidote, but did not resist, one died of kidney failure and the other due to breathing difficulties and multiple organ failure, but there is not much other information about the deaths, so we can’t know the exact number, these numbers are just a ''few'' that occurred only in Brazil. In Peru and Chile there are several others too .

Now compare the size and the quantity of venom of the Chilean recluse with the size of the fangs and the amount that a funnel web injects.
