If only I'd been able to play this as well as Gilels does. It isn't only the notes he plays superbly, but the phrases and, most importantly, the 'gaps'. Simply perfect. Thankyou to Classical Vault 1 for this moment of joy.

I led myself here through a study of the word "arabesque", first as a dance position in ballet and then Islamic or Moorish art which apparently Schumann was moved by. This is a lovely piece and if you're curious where I came to discover the definitions of my now extended vocabulary it was Cormac McCarthy's The Orchard Keeper.
Just personal, that is the performance I prefer : i heard Horowitz, Rubinstein, Kampf, but I decide to follow this way of playing this piece. Good tempo, not too fast, nor too slow, quite simple and natural way of expressing the feelings.
One of the most amazing things about music, especially of the romantic period, is that there are an almost infinite number of ways to express the written notes. My personal preference is the Horowitz version; for me, the 'right' tempi, the sensitivity in the repeated phrases, etc. His version is the model I am working towards.

Horowitz was great in a few things, but not great in most. Gilels was pretty much incomparable in everything he played.
