I had the privilege to attend some of Kempff's recitals in London back in the 1970s. On occasion he would play while gazing into the distance as though he was communing with the spirit of the composer.

I experienced exactly what you nicely wrote when attending Kempff's recitals.
It was as if he was already in Heaven playing for us human beings still on earth...

there are so many poetic artists with dare I say even more facility than Master Wilhelm. Perhaps mention names?

I agree 100%. We will not see the likes of Kempff again.

      @@JOHN-tk6vlHave to disagree.
      There still are.
      Maybe well hidden.
One name comes to my mind: Beatrice Rana.

Merveilleuse interprétation, totalement intériorisée et parfaitement extériorisée ! L'expression de son visage et de ses yeux me touche beaucoup ! Merci !

Wow, I’ve only ever heard him on cds before. Seeing him listen so intently, and get to the essence was a revelation!

I highly appreciate Kempff in particular when he plays Schumann and Beethoven.

I've noticed it before: he looks as if he hears the music for the first time and is tasting its essence.

Once one realizes _"Kempff makes the piano sound like a harp"_ one could probably often recognize Kempff blindly.

Some of the best bars of music Schumann ever wrote.

Some of the finest phrasing ever recorded at the piano, the voicing and turn of phrase is just heartstopping

For some reason i think he has a bit of a childlike quality of playing, which genuinely fits these pieces!

'childlike-could be because much of it is like his Kinderszenen Scenes from Childhood?

I always believed great minds, great human beings, artists, scientists, simple peasants (I met few like this), naturally keep their childhood in their souls all their lives along.
      Feel it's so for Kempff.
It's necessary to keep this openess, innocence, joy, freshness, inextinguible curiosity -among other sorts of qualities- to be such a musician.

Totally disagree, like Howoritz - Kempff had a gift for phrasing of Schumann

I don't think Schumann was his forte whereas he excelled in Beethoven
