    No matter who I've heard play this over the many years of enjoying what I find the best piano piece ever constructed, this version by Gilels has something else. Far less mechanical feeling, more just human feel to it. Its mesmerising.
    If I get to the age where I die on my own terms, this is the piece I wish to hear on loop when I finally exit this mortal coil.

    My favorite interpreter of this piece, ever, including recordings of Rachmaninoff himself. Gilel's' version has amazing color and contrast, an aching tenderness when needed, and a massive thrust. It creates a monumental arch which goes beyond the printed score and pretty much defines the upper limits of piano sonority.

    I really prefer the way Gilels plays the chords from 2:30 to other pianists - without too much rubato. It's supposed to be dramatic, but also pesante, so you can't be stretching the time too much. He plays it well.

    • @randomhero36
      @randomhero36 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Flying Swordfish totally agree....those chords are so clutch for the piece, and I feel like other interpretations just don't go for it there.

    • @Roescoe
      @Roescoe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He also takes the proper time at the beginning, I hear so many that rush it and it sounds sooo bad to me. and the drama is in the accenting of those chords, the longer you spend on them the less impact they have.

      @friendly Jew Hello, "friendly Jew". I don't remember our encounter, but then it was evidently four months ago. I might post my own recording of this piece soon on my channel, though it likely won't be nearly as good as Gilels (if that even needs to be said).

    • @coolxjl
      @coolxjl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just love the way Gilels hammers down those chords, too many play too gently and doesn't achieve that 'world is crashing down' mood you get here.

    • @cedmelancon
      @cedmelancon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally agree as well. Only thing I find bizarre is how he plays the highest note stronger than the other lowest two notes in the double octaves (the first three chords for example). I feel it doesn’t give enough weight to these chords.

    Color me extremely unsofisticated in my preferences, but this prelude will forever remain one of my favorite works. And, by the way, if you ask me what I think about the country in which I was born, raised, live and, most likely, one day I will die in - just listen to this.... the music says it all.
    Сочтите меня чрезвычайно незамысловатым в моих предпочтениях, но эта прелюдия навсегда останется одним из моих любимейших произведений. И, кстати, если вы спросите меня, что я думаю о стране, в которой родился, вырос, живу и, скорее всего, однажды в ней же и умру - просто послушайте это.... этой музыкой всё сказано.

      I saw a lot of criticism for the speed that Hofmann took, but it worked for me.
      The thing about this piece is not to play it too slowly and ponderously - I've heard plenty of interpretations that just drag.
      I like Gilels take on it - the mid section sounds appropriately angry and I appreciate the contrast.
