John was on the keys the entire time. You where looking away. Especially as John was making funny faces at the camera and almost cracked-up Paul. George kept looking down at his guitar. Hilarious.
I wonder if George and Ringo were avoiding looking at John so they wouldn’t start laughing. George was often more serious than the others but it’s funny hearing Ringo described as looking dead inside or pissed off.
@@terri2494 George likely was not having the relentless John head games. It’s hard to imagine Ringo being mad for too long. I think Paul appreciates John acting the fool because things won’t ever get boring when John acts-out. He’s always mercurial and Paul knows he can’t see much without his glasses. Together they are extremely fascinating characters. Will they ever make make it in show biz?

Paul and John would often take songs each had in his head and combine them into a single song. The transition into "Life is very short" is a prime example. I believe people will still be listening to their music a hundred years from now.
John was on the piano. He was a very good pianist.

We can work it out was actually a speech Paul mccartney was planning Just give it to his girlfriend. Well the speech Turned out to be a better song than I talked with a girlfriend.
One of my favorite early Beatles songs. I love their harmony when singing "life is very short", and John's voice and expression wow! I also like the interaction between John and Paul.
Love the way it just starts...>BOOM...."try to see it my way." They looked their best to me in this era, and the song is timeless. Paul's voice just killing.
FYI, the keyboard being played by John is a harmonium (also known as a pump organ), not a piano.
John was on the piano, you could see him a couple of times. Great song, but it is the Beatles!
John was amazing, so was Paul of course and George and Ringo did great.
Honestly, the best part of this video is the undercurrent shown by the facial expressions of John and Paul. Both George and Ringo look like they wanted to be anywhere other than where they are......

This was a gigantic hit and it's a blast to listen along with you. Back in the day It seemed like every week or two the Beatles were releasing songs that were routinely mind-blowing. I think it's one of their best collaborations. Love your reactions.

There are 2 very important aspects of this song that are worth remembering going forward with Beatles songs 1) The use of non-traditional instruments in a "so called" rock song, and 2) combining 2 or more melodic themes and points of view into a single cohesive song. You will find the Beatles doing this more and more as they evolve. It is part of why their music transcends stereotypes, becomes timeless and let our society into the future..

Your comment about Ringo should be smiling was hilarious! I"m a BEATLE! 😁 Well, the truth is Richard Starkey was the one with a Ticket to Ride. He was perfect and great, but the other three were TITANS of popular music! This song was more in their transition out of their early period into their more introspective (got into weed) and mature Rubber Soul and Revolver albums, both easily in their top ten albums, maybe top five.
This song not only applies to personnel relationships but also what nations should use as a guide. We can work it out if leaders will think of the people.

Flip side was Day Tripper just as popular, peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1966. Stevie Wonder did great version of this.
This was the B-side on the "Day Tripper" single. Released as a double A-side because both songs were so good. Both songs shot to #1 in both the UK and America. Who releases double A-side singles like that? Only The Beatles, they had three of these, no one else in history even has one.
Let's take it up a notch, this was released on December 3, 1965, the same day they released their iconic Lp, "Rubber Soul".
Again, who does that? Only The Beatles. I wouldn't call this early Beatles but transitional Beatles. Rubber Soul was a huge departure from their previous albums and was the first Beatles Lp were adults sat up and took notice.
You should dive deep into that Lp starting with John's
"Nowhere Man" a phenomenal song and easily in my top five Beatles songs.
Also John's "Girl" (very mature song), "In My Life" just beautiful and his "Norwegian Wood" great song. "Rubber Soul" is an outstanding record and in my top 3 Beatles albums.
Probably my most played Beatles album along with their follow up album
"Revolver". Two back to back iconic albums. On "We Can Work It Out" when you were talking about the "Life is very short and the fussing and fighting part" that was John's contribution to the song. Paul had the main verses and got stuck on how to get to the bridge. The next day John walked in with that bridge part. That was the magic of Lennon and McCartney, they would always help one another and they were both born with musical genius. George stated that Paul came in with that song and it was great but couldn't come up with the bridge. John went home and came in with it the next day.
He said it was a beautiful song but without John's bridge it really didn't go anywhere. George was very funny and said that when John came in with that bridge that it was maybe the first time where it dawned on him just how convenient it was to be in a band with those two guys.
All I had to do was play guitar, sing harmonies and come up with one or two of my own songs for each album. One more great song that was the B-side on their next single released between "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" is Lennon's "Rain" released in April or May, 1966. This song has so many firsts with recording techniques that had to be created as they were recording the song. The technology wasn't in place yet for a song like this and is one of the most important songs in the history of recorded music from a sound standpoint. It was the first song they recorded after John and George started dropping LSD and you can hear it, one hell of a song! So different than any of their previous music and music anywhere in 1966. If you do this one, make sure it's from the 2022 remix of their "Revolver".
As a bonus on disc 2 which is mainly studio out takes from the Lp, they include the bonus single " Paperback Writer"/"Rain" they both sound like they were recorded now.
They sound incredible. Paul had the A-side but John always felt that "Rain" should have been the A-side and I agree. Listen to both of them, Paul's "Paperback Writer" is really good and these remixes sound incredible. Do "Rain" and I'll break it down for you, quite a recording.

I have always found this song as an excellent example of the difference in John and Paul's personality. Paul sings to see things his way for the relationship to continue because to see it the other way would cause them to fall apart. To me, it doesn't sound like much of a compromise but he may have been writing from a personal experience. John's middle part is more general or, as would eventually become more prominent in his peace promoting life, global.Another fine example where these two slap a song together out of half-ideas with probably the most outstanding and 'next level' example of this being 'A Day In The Life'.
He did evolve, though. In Maybe I'm Amazed, he said ,"You right me when I'm wrong." Speaking about Linda, who the song was written for.
It's not possible to have twenty number one hits in the USA unless you can write a good song. They wrote dozens of good songs.
the pure musicality of the Beatles never ceases to amaze... I think George (and Ringo too) were spoofing the fact they weren't really playing to this lip synched video

Great review. I guess I wouldn't consider this "early Beatles" but more the beginning of the "mid" Beatles years. Starting with the songs from the Rubber Soul album, they progressed from being a teeny-bopper band singing love songs to little girls to songs more like this. Their early hits boosted their confidence in their songwriting and also allowed them the luxury of being able to explore and experiment with their songs.

DA really great, very early Beatles song, by John, is , "Not Amother Time." I hadn't known this song, and it has really grown on me!

They were probably tired. They never had a day off back in those days. They were either songwriting, or recording, or performing…. They were in demand in almost EVERY COUNTRY in the world!

The Beatles were not big fans of doing these promotional videos or TV appearances that were lip synced. John was always clowning and calling attention to the fact they were miming. They hated phoniness and didn’t hesitate to show their disdain for having to do these. Usually it was in a fun goofy way, but in this video Ringo and George didn’t give a single one. Playing live they were all into it, jamming and having fun, but pre-recorded videos and TV appearances were just a chore. They were also merciless with reporters at press conferences, just making jokes out of all the questions. These were just 4 young guys who were always themselves in spite of all the fame and adulation. They loved to play music and make records. The rest of it, the interviews, promotional stuff and so on was all BS to them. That’s why so many young people related to them, they never pretended to be anything they were not. They were always themselves. You should react to some of their press conferences.

John Lennon was on the electric piano throughout the whole song. Paul was standing next to him. He was sitting on the piano bench the entire song. Did you not see John sitting there making those goofy faces as he sat there playing the electric piano? You should re-watch it...

Let me remind you that Ringo Starr is left-handed, so playing the drums was no easy task for him (well, at least that's what I think) as he had to play arm-crossed most of the time.
He did perfectly fine on the drums and that was part of what made him such a great and unique drummer
He was left-handed and played a right-handed drum kit. It was one thing that made his playing unique. He was perfect for the Beatles.

These early attempts at music videos are cringeworthy in my opinion. People get offended when I say that but it is what it is. It doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy watching them 😂. I absolutely love this early gem. “If I Fell” is a must. 🌺✌️

Come on guys. Michael says he is listening to these in order. Stop sending him two or three years ahead. He should go a little slow, like he is doing. There're plenty great songs before he gets to Sgt Pepper and Helter Skelter. You need to point out the songs he's missed, like I Should Have Known Better, Day Tripper and I'm a Loser.
