Mary was Paul's mother's name. She died tragically when he was a teenager and during a troubling time in his life Paul had a dream where she came to him and told him to: Let it be. Paul wrote this song based on that Dream.

At the time he wrote this Paul Mcartney was going through a lot,the impending breakup of the Beatles, his marriage and looking forward to fatherhood. He was wishing he could talk to his mom who had passed away years ago,he had dream about his mother. Mother Mary was Mary Mcartney who had died when her son was 14. Paul likes when a song means something different to the listener. You can bet he knew a lot of people were going to think it was Jesus' Mother Mary, and he was fine with that. I was listening to another reacter who apparently had been told "mother Mary" was Paul's mother. She heard the line "And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light that shines on me" and she said "That's his mother! His mother, watching over him!" I've listened to this song since it came out in 1970. That never occurred to me.

This one of my favorite Beatles' song. You definitely got the gist of Paul's beautiful message; at times you just got to chill and go with the flow as the lyrics say "Speaking words of wisdom, let it be" and "There will be an answer, let it be". The song sounds like a hymn but Paul said that the Mary he was referring to was his deceased mother who said this to him in dream but you can interpret it any way you like. Either way an amazing song and to be inspired by a dream is interesting. If you haven't yet you should check out their songs "Get Back", "Something", "Norwegian Wood", Eleanor Rigby", "Penny Lane", "Here Comes The Sun" and the "The Long & Winding Road" to name just a few from their amazing catalog.

This song is the title track from the final studio album "Let It Be" that was released on May 1970, almost a month after the group's break-up. It had a lot of good songs on it. "The Long & Winding Road", "Get Back", "Across The Universe" etc.

    • @andyallan2909
      @andyallan2909 ปีที่แล้ว

NOT the Beatles final studio album! The Let It be album was recorded after a fashion but left in the can unfinished. Eventually the Beatles went back into the studio and recorded their final studio album, 'Abbey Road.' They then went their separate ways. When the record company thought that there was nothing new on the horizon, they fished out the unfinished 'Let It Be/Get Back' tapes and handed them over to producer Phil Spector to see if he could get anything worthwhile out of them. So, 'Let it Be' was the final album released BUT NOT the final album recorded in the studio.

This was a bittersweet song for the Beatles - "Let it Be" was also the name of their 12th studio album (which featured this song) and it came out right after the Beatles broke up and was one of their biggest hits. Towards the end of their run together, the band started having more and more disagreements about the direction of the band as well as personal arguments, and as others have said, Paul McCartney had a dream amongst a lot of the turmoil where his late mother (Mary) came to him and told him it was going to be okay and just let what has to happen, happen, and to just let it be. The Beatles were active from 1960-1970, just ten years, but their impact on music can't be overstated. Great stuff buddy, Cheers

It was a Hammond organ you heard, with classic Leslie speaker modulation.
McCartney played a Blüthner piano, Lennon played six-string electric bass (replaced by McCartney's own bass part on the final version at the behest of George Martin), George Harrison and Ringo Starr assumed their conventional roles, on guitar and drums respectively, and Billy Preston contributed on Hammond organ.

Paul McCartney's mother's name was Mary, and as T Champagne said, the song came to him after he had a dream of his mother giving him the song's message. He has said many times (because Paul LOVES to share and reshare and then share again his anecdotes) that he knew people would take a religious connotation from the "Mother Mary" lyric and he was perfectly fine with that since it was in keeping with the message. The Beatles were all raised with religious backgrounds but were for the most part pretty agnostic. The notable exception was George Harrison, who became very spiritual and religious after his LSD experiences, incorporating his Christian upbringing into his Hindi and Buddhist studies and beliefs (many of his post-Beatles solo work reference God or Krshna or both).

Mary McCartney died of breast cancer when Paul was 14. In 1967-68, there was a lot of turmoil within the Beatles and their lives. Drugs, losing their manager to a drug overdose, tired from years of touring and all the booze and women. Paul admits he was really "getting pretty low, really down", and in a drunken dream, Paul had his mother tell him, "just put it all down, Just let it be". Paul and John were not fans of Christianity, George was fascinated with Hinduism, Buddhism, and the Harri Christna's. Ringo became a born again Christian in the late 70s becoming sober, or trying to be. This song is just Paul's message to the world to chill out.

2 years earlier, Lennon, whilst chatting with a friend (ex friend who was a journalist) reporting him saying in response to the popularity of the band, "It is totally crazy, we have gotten so big, The Beatles are more popular than Jesus in Great Britain. " The American press got hold of that and immediately, the Beatles were the first band to get cancelled. Record burnings and death threats (especially in the south) caused the songwriters to lash out in many songs, criticizing the church and the power elite. Of course, in poetic and word imagery, and not direct.

I was 2 when my family arrived in Liverpool, so feel moreso a Liverpudlian! I always spoke with that scouse accent, but not as strong! Adore 'Let it be' by Paul McCartney, just fabulous. Adore all of their songs!!! xx

In this song, mother Mary is a reference to Paul's real mother whose name was Mary!

Mother Mary was literally Paul’s mom who died when he was only 14. She came to him in a dream at a time when Paul was especially troubled with the Beatles about to come to an end, a and in his dream she told him to just let it be.

I think when Paul dies (he’s 81 now & I wish him a long and happy life) this will be the song that is played. I heard him sing it playing on his Aunty Ginnie’s piano on New Years Eve.

I think two of the Beatles, at least, were Catholic, but that this song was primarily about Paul's long gone mother, also named Mary. I guess it is one of those things that could be interpreted both ways. It sounds like it was intentionally written to sound like that. Anyway, the rock music of the 60s had a lot of spirituality in it. Keep an ear out for it as you go through this journey.

In the Beatles' catalogue, religions only play a role by the spiritualist George Harrison, which is particularly noticeable in the Beatles' sitar songs (actually these are more of Harrison solo songs with Indian accompaniment). John Lennon and Paul McCartney were/are rather atheistic, even if there was no specific definition of the two in this regard and Lennon in particular triggered quite a few discussions... Ringo is Ringo... He probably, as a dry alcoholic, acquired a certain relationship with some god figure without apparently living it intensively.

Paul’s mum, Mary, was a nurse. She died of cancer when he was about 14. John lost his mom in an accident when he was about the same age. They had that in common.

Mother Mary is about Paul McCartney´s (writer and singer of the song) mother, Mary, a nurse who died when Paul was a teenager.

This song was about Paul's worries, concerning the arguments within the Beatles and the advice Paul's mother , Mary, (who'd died , when he was a child), would have given to him .

I just love Your comments, You are definitely as "close to Your emotions" as Paul is, re his Lyrics. Anyway, it seem to me that You mostly have reacted to the Later of Beatles songs - I personally Love their 63-66 songs, powerful Gems they are; She Loves You, A hard Days Night, I Feel Fine, Please,Please Me, I Want to Hold Your Hand. These are just a handful of their pure Rock/Pop songs, and they were the ones I (as a now 73 Year old man), learned to play guitar to. What a Privilige God blessed me with ...

You're right - it doesn't matter what the song is actually about. It simply matters what it means to you. I am 100% certain John, Paul, George & Ringo would agree.
