"The world needs more of this" - Welcome to the world of the Beatles, you won't regret it.
The world needed this even more badly in late 1968 after riots, war and assassinations made 1968 one of the worse years in American history. Leave it to the Beatles to come up with an encouraging song at the end of the year that brought people together to sing the iconic chorus.
The Beatles brought joy, happiness, fun and people together, their music still does, and Paul and Ringo's constant touring still does that today

Their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and subsequent American tour, was fortuitously timed as they took the country by storm the following year in 1964. And so the Beatles helped America recover from TWO national tragedies, not one !
You have made an accurate analysis. The Beatles transcended everything. They wouldn't play in front of segregated audiences. Thay had no style because they did every style. They expanded how instruments were played. Their songs told stories, many from their own memories and experiences. They tackled social issues, sang about love and peace... It goes on and on. I think branding them as the best band ever downplays how great they were. They were more than that! They were a gift, a miracle that can't be duplicated, let alone topped. You're in for a ride if you deep dive into their catalogue. Please do, you'll see why more than 50 years after their end they are still so important and influential. They are "The Beatles" enough said...

What made The Beatles great was their constant evolution. They rarely repeated the same style twice. Nearly every song is different. They were their own genre.

@@Fool3SufferingFools I love that you can see Paul trying to hide his laughter over this! It was always about the fun they had while performing. It was the business part of being Beatles that broke them apart, not the music part.
Watching Lennon and McCartney communicate without saying a word tells you the kind of deep relationship they had... being friends since they were 15, they spoke their own language and seeing it on video is like getting a glimpse of the great an genius work they did together. If you have the chance see more videos of both of them improvising while they play… they are pure magic.

You have found the Holy Grail of music!.THE most groundbreaking & evolutionary musical act in history. Their talent & influence cannot be overestimated. That chemistry between Paul ( at the piano) & John ( Harry Potter glasses/lol) was very real. At this point ( Sept 1968) they had known each other for about 12 years, written songs & performed together. So they were definitely " spirit" brothers. Geniuses.. Start with their earliest records & listen chronologically to their 8 short years of recordings. The growth & progression is nothing short of astounding. From a great Rock n roll band to THE most innovative music on the planet. They ARE the GOAT for good reason.
John and Paul met when they were 15 and 16. Both of their mothers died. They were BOTH exceptional musical geniuses. They LOVED each other like crazy. They lived only 1 mile apart. This is a love story, not saying it's sexual. They were VERY strongly connected. This is a tory of profound love, Cynthia and Yoko and Linda ALL said they were shocked at the depth of the connection between John and Paul, they all said it was MUCH stronger than the rest iof us can understand

Btw, the host of the TV show was David Frost, also famous himself, as an interviewer and journalist.
Not sure if I say they are the greatest. I would say one of the greatest. They did influnce so many others but cannot leave out Queen, Rolling Stones or Led Zeplin. Lennon and McCartney are two of the greatest composers as well. But not the greatest

@@jackielam6284 Ringo played things and created methods no other drummer had done before. At the very least Ringo wrote a big portion of the book on playing drums. Some of the best drums ever played are in the “Medley” on Abbey Road.
Lead singer and pianist Paul McCartney wrote the song for John Lennon's youg son Julian to ease him through his parents divorce in 1968. Using "Jude" instead of "Julian" in the song. John Lennon was on the guitar with the glasses, George Harrison was on bass next to him, and Ringo Starr was on drums...Great reaction my man. Great, great reaction! You have a new fan and supporter!
And Julian recently released an album called Jude. Full circle.

For my generation, they will always be "John Lennon" glasses. There was never another band after The Beatles for me. They remain the signature sound of a decade. 💖💖💖
Yes, I laughed when he said "Harry Potter" glasses. Harry Potter hadn't been created yet, and any way, Harry Potter's glasses were BLACK rimmed, John wore those glasses when he starred in the 1967 movie "HOW I WON THE WAR" playing a character called "Private Gripweed" in the British army during WW I . That was a style that was worn back then, He liked them, and started wearing them all the time after that, THEN they were referred to as "Lennon glasses' because NO ONE else was wearing them at the time....but it caught on quickly with the public (as all Beatles styles did then). John Sebastian of the "Lovin' Spoonful" wore them as well.
The best thing about being born in 1955 was being a teenager in the 60's and waiting for the next Beatles record to drop. It was magical. The Beatles changed music and culture worldwide and were all about love and peace. Colleges have offered courses on The Beatles and Lennon/McCartney songs for years and I'm sure 200 years from now their songs will still be studied just like Bach and Beethoven are today. 20 #1 Hits, 35 top 10 hits and over 230 songs and not a bad one in the bunch. The Beatles have been one of the top selling bands every single year including last year since 1964. In April 1965 they had all top 5 spots on the billboard top 100. BTW, those "sick" glasses worn by John were called granny glasses and it started a fad. Every student in school had them and they came in different colored lens. They weren't for improving sight but were just for looks and to be like The Beatles, LOL.
Just now seeing this video so I don't know how long it's been up. But just an add-on about the college courses. When John found out, he wrote, Walrus and Glass Onion, as a joke. He knew it would drive them crazy trying to figure them out.

"Hey Jude" is from 1968, in the studio version McCartney accompanies the "Na na na" chorus uninhibitedly, completely from the gut. The video is a 2 out of 3 take compilation, the audience was informed with flyers for this TV show and continued to be filled with fans, which constantly waiting outside the Beatles' Abbey Road (then EMI) studio for the band. The gentleman with the flowers in his hair is Billy Davis, a street busker, who ran into the Beatles, while they were filming the TV movie "Magical Mystery Tour" and managed to hang around the Fab Four. The Beatles' music encompasses at least 15 genres, for which the group very often set new standards. You have already guessed the aura of the band. By this point on "Hey Jude", however, they had long since said goodbye to record-breaking tours with countless hysterical fans and concentrated mainly on work in the studio. The internet is full of this breathtaking story of the Beatles and thousands of books have already been written.

The 2 guys looking at each other are Paul McCartney -keys /bass vocals -& John Lennon -guitar vocals - probably one of the greatest song weighting pairing , George Harrison on lead guitar vocals & Ringo Starr on drums and some vocals. Insanely talented band The perfect storm of song writing, musicians & and not being afraid to try different things. DEEP RABBIT HOLE.
Yes, and George was equally talented. He went on to have an amazing solo career and created the Traveling Wilburys! Ringo has been on the music scene ever since the band broke up!

The ‘perfect rendition’ you heard was actually the David Frost Show theme they were having light hearted fun with. “By George! It’s the David Frost theme” was written by George Martin, the Beatles producer!

I have been listening to, and loving The Beatles since they came to the US in 1964. I was 7 years old...I am now 66. This song came out in 1968, and it was at number 1 for 9 weeks. The Beatles made great music, but more than that, they made people happy. Their music still does that. Their music will live forever. I consider myself blessed to have lived through The Beatles era.

I feel the same way, but I was blessed to be 17 years old in 1964 and could go to their concerts and really experience Beatlemania first hand. It was such a fun time in my life, at 75 they are STILL important to me and their music has been the soundtrack of my life. "Beatlemania" is one disease you never want to be cured of.
@@patticrichton1135 Even if I had been older, I couldn't have gone. We were poor, and could never have traveled to Houston or Dallas to see them. I lived, and still live in San Antonio. I have seen Paul five times, and Ringo once, and even saw George in 1974. I never got to see John though. The Beatles will be in my life till my days are over.
Unfortunately, we’re never getting this again. It was such a beautiful and hopeful time to be alive. The future seemed very bright and shiny, and The Beatles made this magic from the beginning to the end.
It was the song we never wanted to end. We were caught in a trance when this came on the radio while we were driving around town. Windows down; voices up. We shouted it as we drove.
The most memorable time I sang it with other folks was in July 1981, in Strasbourg, France, outside in the street on the steps of our university dormitory. Someone had a guitar. We all had voices. We "Hey Juded" ourselves hoarse.

I heard Paul McCartney sing this. The whole stadium started singing along with him. It was amazing. It is one of the most influential songs ever played.
Paul has always played "Hey Jude" at his concerts (except during his 1976 world tour, and smaller tours in England which were unannounced....he would just show up at colleges and ask them if he and the band could play for them, this was around 1972 when he was getting Wings together )

Yes, the single was released on air a particular day at 11pm I think it was. I was in my car and I was tuned in to the radio just waiting for it, so when I heard this, it was with a sense of euphoria. It exceeded my expectations even as a Beatles fan.
It's impossible to get full appreciation of The Beatles by their music alone. You must consider the era in which they evolved. They developed in the 1960s alongside the ever-changing culture, often leading the way in pop music. You can listen independently to "Please Please Me" from the early years to "Norwegian Wood" from the middle years to "Something" from the final years and appreciate the greatness of each song, but you need the context of the whole to truly appreciate that The Beatles are indeed the greatest band of all time.

You hit it on the nose, they played for thousands and thousands of hours together since they were teenagers. People who knew them said they were always off in their own world, especially when making music together. One of the things I loved about Get Back is that we could finally see that happen.
I graduated in 1969. A couple of months before graduation, the senior teachers were called to the office for a short meeting leaving us alone with our doors (10) open to the hall. One guy who was a rock singer and really good, got up out in the hall and started singing this song. Some of us joined in. By the time the last chorus came along, almost 250 kids were singing. The senior teachers came back pretty quickly but didn’t stop the singing. 1969. Blacks, whites. Rednecks, jocks, preps, nerds, geeks, and hippies. This was in South Georgia. It was a unifying moment.
What a wonderful memory, and so in keeping with the aura of the Beatles. They were all about bringing people together, especially at this point in their career.

I don't think so. In 1968, Paul was 26, and John Lennon was going through his divorce. I believe he married Yoko at the end of 1968.

The Beatles were a reflection of their time. Society as it was back then. Their music teaches us many things, even after they split up, they continued to help us see the world around us. Awesome foursome. I have questioned your views but I like what this experience has done to you. Keep growing and learning.
The beatles wee a legendary band. Each went off in their own path and continued as legends. We had the Beatles in my lifetime and Paul And Ringo are still with us, still singing and playing like pros. Check out Karioke Car Pool with Paul McCartney and how they ended up singing blockbuster songs in a pub in Liverpool. Also go back through there first albums and see how they evolved to be the best in the world and still outsell most bands today. When you have done that look up "Call Me Caroline" and her reaction videos to the Beatles from the beginning and you will have a whole new appreciation for them.
Paul McCartney wrote and sang this song for John Lennon's (guy in glasses) young son, Julien. In 1968, John was divorcing his first wife, Cynthia, for his new lover Yoko Ono. Paul wrote the song for Julian to help him deal with the bad time he was experiencing. This song clocked in at almost 7 minutes when songs on the radio rarely surpassed 3 minutes. When the record executives complained that the song would never get any airplay because it was too long, John Lennon came back with, "They will if it's us!" And he was absolutely right. Hey Jude was number one on the charts for 8 weeks! Check out their broadcast of All You Need is Love! It was filmed live as the very first satellite broadcast around the world in 1967. A billion people must have seen it when it came on. It's a beautiful John Lennon song that conveys exactly what the title says. I love that one, too!
Michael, great reaction! I am 72, still an active musician, and the Beatles are still my fav band of all time. Followed them since I was 12, and I picked up the sticks and became a drummer, inspired by Ringo, Beatles drummer. Ringo and Paul still play music, George and John have passed. It was divinely arranged these 4 people met and made music together. They have sold more records than anyone else (500 or 800 million). And have brought joy to people all over the world!
You should really explore more and more of the Beatles. They truly were the best band ever, and you could literally pick ANY of their songs and be blown away by it.
I love that you observed that silent communication between Paul and John. They had played together since they were about 15, no need for words!
I grew up with the Beatles music & had most of their records. They were part of the British Invasion. You can't go wrong with any of their music. They had so many great songs in the 60's-70's.
"We need to have more of this" The Beatles showed us the way even in 1964. They were about to perform in Jacksonville Florida for the very first time and found out the stadium was to be a segregated audience. The Beatles refused and the stadium agreed to allow the audience to be integrated. Oh and the "message" Paul and John were communicating about was John forgot (or decided not to) sing harmony on that verse. But that's who they were. And the stuff at the beginninbg was a good lesson on who the Beatles were. They were amazing musicians who liked to cut up and have a good time and joke around.

Paul was encouraging John's first son, Julian, to work on improving his relationship with John's new love, Yoko Ono. You are absolutely right, the world needs more Beatles
You got it right when you said "ground breaking". It's hard for younger people today, with over 50 years of music development, to appreciate how revolutionary the Beatles' music was at the time ... there had never been anything like it. Try listening to their first number one hit in America, "I want to hold your hand", The excitement and raw energy in their performance of this song crashed into the American psyche like nothing else before or after, and music would never be the same again ... and the Beatles became a sensation!
It is quite humorous during the second verse, as you noticed that John and Paul were communicating by glances. What happened here was that John was supposed to come in with a backing vocal but missed it. Paul in turn looks to him like "John, where are you?" John responds, "What? Oh sh---, I missed it! Sorry!" Then they keep playing, with nothing really missed.
The world does need more of The Beatles. All You Need is Love!!!
You know your getting old when people of the younger generation such as yourself don't know the magnitude of the impact the BEATLES had on the world of music . At one time during their rise to fame they had 7 of the top 10 hits in the charts and the other 3 were written by them . They introduced the British invasion to your country and were instrumental in introducing innovative new ideas to the music industry . I suggest you go back to their beginning and move forward , not only will you be amazed ,as they were responsible for writing over 4oo recognised hit songs it will give you content for years , sit back and enjoy the ride you won't be disappointed
Paul McCartney wrote Hey Jude for Julian Lennon, John's son. His parents were divorcing and this was a song of encouragement for the young child.
I had the pleasure of seeing this on TV, with my mom, the day that this aired on the David Frost show in 1968. It stuck in my mind since I was nine years old, but wasn't sure whether or not it was a "false memory" until I saw it on TH-cam over 50 years later. I remember both me and my mom being blown away, not only by the song, but by the audience coming on stage in all their diverse ethnic backgrounds, colors, religions, ages, etc. Still blows me away. I'm glad that TH-camrs like you are still bringing it up, reacting to it in a positive way. 🤠
In the US it was first shown on " The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour"... They always had THE best & most current music acts on.
@@dannygriffith6185 Yup, we always watched that show. They introduced me to Buffalo Springfield playing "For What It's Worth," which made a strong impression on me even at my young age. And Donovan doing "Atlantis"...☮
That was the essence of The Beatles' core: Peace, love, and Innovation- all delivered in the spirit of irreverence and playfulness. You can get a glimpse of their dynamics on the video series, "Get Back," a restored view of the recording sessions that produced the album by the same name and their final ever performance on the rooftop of the Apple recording headquarters. This was shortly before their impending break-up which had been stirring conflict and some acrimony,. A peak at some of this underlying tension is evident in the videoed sessions.. Still, what you're left with are the qualities that united them: their lighthearted brotherly rapport and their comical and playful interactions. Yes, you put your finger on the pulse of what made the Beatles so extraordinary.
if you watch, every time Paul looks at Lennon, he smiles and starts to laugh...they loved each other.I didn't know there was anyone on earth left who didn't know who the Beatles were - are?
Their message to the world was always from all four of them was LOVE. Just LOVE.
The beatles were a musical, cultural, political and societal force whose originality and genius changed everything that came before it. You have to know the world before the Beatles to fully understand the enormous magnitude to which they changed things. I dont think its possible for a band to do that anymore but who knows? But impact aside they were 4 remarkable young men whose breath taking talent changed music forever and created infinite hours of audio pleasure for people ever since. The gods smiled on us when they gave us the Beatles.
Throughout their relatively short career, The Beatles continued to innovate and push the envelope in jaw-dropping ways. I suggest you listen to their albums in their entirety to hear their progression as artists and musicians. My favorites are Revolver, Sgt Pepper's..., Magical Mystery Tour, the White Album, and Abbey Road. I love their early stuff too. They stopped touring in 1966 so the only live performances after that were on TV shows, videos, and the film Let it Be. Hey Jude was performed live on the David Frost Show in 1968 and they were messing around before they played the song.
The Beatles are easily the greatest of all time. Anyone who says otherwise is either uniformed or biased. Every member went on to have a successful solo career as well.

We're all lucky to have shared the same time and space with The Beatles and their music...
This is the Beatles at the end. To understand them you have to start from the beginning - 1962 in England. They didn't change with the times, they changed the times. Everybody followed and copied them. They wrote one really good song after another year after year. They just kept topping themselves. Their unique harmonies that can't be emulated add to their specialness. Go to the beginning....

I’m in the UK and the Beatles have such a timeless appeal. I’m mid 40s when I was at University in the 90s every student night ended up with Hey Jude and we all sang along at the top of our voices. Happy times 😊
The Beatles were the greatest band ever! None can compare. Can you image how much bigger they would have been if the internet had been around back then? These guys had a minimal amount of equipment as compared today! Great music doesn’t last for only three months..these guys have the attention of my grandchildren! Enjoy the phenomenon of THE BEATLES!
Great catch on the silent communication that was going on: during the third verse John forgot to sing his harmony part. Him and Paul both picked up on it at the same time. Tightest band ever.

I listened to the remastered double CD ‘Sergeant Pepper’ anniversary, and I was amazed how The Beatles would talk to each other through their instruments. After a while, I felt like I had learned a new language. Abbey Road engineer once said the musical telepathy between them was mind boggling
Yeah, you're right about their connection. Paul was around 15, George was 14, and John was 16 when they met and started playing music together.
I still tear up even after all these years. I was 11 & was afraid they were not going to show up again.
We were spoiled & had grown to expect a "hit" every week ( they allowed The Stones time ) b4 the next.
Over 450 songs, two world tours & 3 movies in 8 years !. Imagine. Good pick my man.

Welcome to the Beatles!!!! Really do encourage you to go deep into their fabulous collection of music. I would also suggest that you start all the way back to 1964 and progress and grow thru the years as they and we did. It's a remarkable journey. Between the group and their individual accomplishments, you could listen to a different song "every" day for "year" and not hear the same thing twice. Enjoy!!!!!!

The Beatles may not be your favorite band, but they absolutely the best band. Sales and hits aside, they did more for the production and artistry of music than most realize. They helped to wrest power away from the production companies and give it to the artists. There will never be another Beatles.

The Beatles were a lightening streak in the sky, a flash of genius, here, then gone. Did we actually see that? Were they real or a crazy acid dream? The Beatles, like Wordsworth, or Beethoven or Lord Byron. Classic.
The communication you mentioned is right. Only the best of bands can do that. You also see that a lot with Queen. Freddie and the rest of the band just look or nod a certain way and they get the message. The Beatles were very good with their crowds. They loved their fans and included everyone. They wrote so many fantastic songs in the short time they were together.
Still gives me chills after 55 years.

Getting to sing along to this in concert, with Sir Paul on stage leading 20,000 more voices, is practically a religious experience that I'll never forget.
I was a freshman in high school when this was released. I remember seeing them for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.
Still gives chills after 50+ years.

It is important understand that with all of the songs that they wrote, all of the different instruments that they could play, none of them could read music! Paul, at his mother's insistence when he was quite young did take some piano lessons but that was it! They were all self taught on their instruments and played by ear.

I remember when this song came out. I used to put a dime in the juke box at our local A&W and play it.
What is going on I think is at about 3.15 is John is supposed to be singing a harmony starting at 3.08 ("remember...") but it seems he plain ol' forgets.
And John realizes - but too late. They both understand.
Then at about 4.18 John does come in as he should and Paul smiles a few seconds later. Happy he remembered this time.

You are right they played a lot. When they were in Hambutg they would perform for 8 hours a day non stop nearly every day. They would have clocked up more hours making live performances before they became famous than most of today's groups do in their entire careers!
It was cool to watch your reaction change from mild bemusement to wild enthusiasm. So much to recommend for future viewings. There's lots of concert/tv footage from the early "Beatlemania" years. I tend to prefer their mid to late period, so I'd suggest "Revolution", "Hey Bulldog" "Let It Be" or "I Am the Walrus". But really, there's 200+ songs in their recording career, you could pick almost any of them.
The old guy with the flowers in his glasses & a drink in his hand always makes this for me 😂 he’s just grooving away in his happy world. Maybe got a bit much for Paul when he started patting him on the head 😂Love this live performance so much, it’s the best vibe 🥳 Love that you see different races and ages all hanging out together and singing and loving it. The point where Paul looks at John and smiles is because John was supposed to harmonize and forgot, later in the song John gets it right and Paul smiles again, cute. John was notorious for forgetting words to the song so the look between them is a bit of an inside joke.
Directed by Lindsay-Hogg, the ending used 300 extras for the chanting. A 36 piece orchestra enters at 5:37, playing unison notes behind the band. A LOVE-IN! Fantastic!

John had this habit of messing with Paul when they were singing, to try get him to crack. He'd do such things as suddenly stare at Paul like he did here. You can watch other footage of their concerts and see similar stunts. But, they looked like they were having fun and we were all in on the joke.
Release date 1968, 6 years after first stepping into a recording studio.
Paul wrote this song for 6yr-old Julian Lennon, John's son; John had just walked out on his wife and child to pursue Yoko Ono. Paul wanted to cheer Julian up and, yes, give him encouragement, so Paul wrote this.
The bits at the beginning were the Beatles fooling around during (and after) commercial break on a nationally-broadcast UK TV show in 1968 by host David Frost (who famously got the first post-resignation interview with President Richard Nixon). Why? Because, Beatles. The crowd coming up on stage was the studio audience.
This song is actually history-making. Prior to this song, most musicians got exposure on AM radio, but selections were restricted to songs running less than 4minutes. If you wondered why a lot of early Beatles songs were 2 to 3 minutes long, all popular music had to bend to this convention. Even after albums replaced singles as the preferred purchase source, any album selection released as a single had to be edited down to a 3minute format. Until "Hey Jude".
"Hey Jude" runs over 7 minutes. Someone in the recording studio mentioned to John how the song wouldn't get airplay because of the length. John shot back, "It will if it's us." And John was right; AM radio played the whole 7-some minutes. It opened the gate for other music that went past 4 minutes. Now broadcast music is as long as it needs to be to express what the songwriter wants to say.
Actually, compare this to Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" (especially the Outtakes #7). Taylor invited fans of her to a destination for a Taylor Swift event, but the fans didn't know until they arrived that they would be dancing WITH TAYLOR in the official video for a song that hadn't yet been released. Very similar vibe to this video of a live performance of "Het Jude". So it CAN be done today.
The guy playing the piano is Paul McCartney.
And the Beatles, when they came to do their first tour in 1964 and the other tours in '65 and '66, the venue contracts stipulated that there be no racial element in ticket sales or seating; prior to civil rights amendments in the US, the Beatles required equality or they would not perform.
