    Boy the castings are smooth and nice on the newer Urals, my 2016 has the older rough cast rockers.

    Are the silicon gaskets easy enough to install and not put them on upside down? I loved my '05 Troyka, as I could pull the hack over to work on the inboard heads and such for oil changes or maintenance. I am working on a new to me, '05 Tourist now and it is not quite as easy to get at things as my Troyka was. I really enjoyed this video, as it gives a different way to adjust those valves than what the other video I had watched did. It was good too, though. It always sort of befuddled me as to the proper setting to use on that timing gear hidden behind that rubber cover. Nice video and thanks for sharing it. ;-)

    • @Uraljunkie
      @Uraljunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have found the silicone gaskets easy to use and they have not leaked. Plus I have taken the valve covers off several times and reused them. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Gday Alan Sorry to hear your winterizing your girl.. Just beginning great riding season here Down Under. QUESTION? I get conflicting information concerning torqueing of head bolts when adjusting valves. Some say back them off then reset torgue, others say just make sure they are on torque no mention of backing off first.. Your advice.. Thanks in advance. GREAT RIDES IN TASMANIA MATE, DOOR ALWAYS OPEN AND THE KETTLE ON.....

    • @Uraljunkie
      @Uraljunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi William (Bill?). Yeah… I hate winter! You are lucky - I would love to visit Tasmania! Ural Bug and friends went there not too long ago…
      Anyway - good question on torquing the heads. To be honest, I have never done that to mine. However, I don’t think it is a good idea to loosen the head bolts, since intuitively it would upset the established mating relationship that has been established. If I were to do it, I would just check the torque by applying 50Nm to make sure they are tight. What should be done is just inspect that the haven’t loosened, no undo and redo the torque.
      I think that could be a good video. I will set the valves, “retorque” the heads and then check the valve clearance which I predict will not change. Viewers have said that I should have retorqued the heads before doing the valve adjustment, but I don’t think that is necessary. If that changed the valve clearance in any way, the heads would be leaking compression out in a very obvious way.
      Thanks a bunch for the excellent question, and I hope I haven’t rambled too much!

    • @williambrown4324
      @williambrown4324 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Uraljunkie No not at all rambling, just sound advice. I agree that maybe checking that none of the bolts are sloppy loose, don't mess with it otherwise then you could be undoing a good seat. If I get to be too full of questions let me know, but your recommendation on tyres? I do no off- road riding, no motorways, mainly back country two lane roads. I did not get any service records with the bike. She is a 2008 Tourist just turned 9000k the tyres are Russian, maybe still the original ones The modifications done prior to me owning is a ceramic dual exhaust, a reversing shift lever which is fantastic. I would kind of like to install the full gear shift assemble, maybe,,, but they want a fortune for it.. I guess it would be another wow factor and why would i want to take my hand off the handlebars...Happy to share me email instead of using up your channel. I could sent some photos. Stay safe mate..

    • @Uraljunkie
      @Uraljunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi William! You are exactly right on the head bolts! As for tires, the choices are rather limited. I am using Duro HF308 tires which are good solid 6 ply tires designed for our bikes. After 12k+ miles, I still have my original sidecar and front tires (and spare). I have replaced the pusher tire three times I think. They are probably the best tire out there, especially for back roads with occasional dirt duty. The best part is that they are quite inexpensive - around 70 US$ each. They were the standard tire from Ural for the 19 inch rims until 2022 when they will supply GearUps with Heidenau K37 tires. The K37’s are good tires as well if you want to give your bike a “tough” look, and I hear that they last a long time too in spite of the off road tread pattern.
      I agree with the reverse shifter - brilliant. As far as modifications… do whatever you want to make it your special bike!
      Oh… forgot to say 4.00x19 on the tires (tyres).

    Nice video, as always. I just did my first service... all fluids clean and clear. Question: Do you ever have any dripping from the alternator gasket on top of the engine? I have a drop hanging there after each ride. Bike is new 2020 and covered with warranty, but this seems like a nit-picky thing to bring it to a shop for. Any thoughts on that?

    • @Uraljunkie
      @Uraljunkie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, but I check it all the time. A common thing for a Ural. Definitely get it fixed under warranty! It will just get worse. Not even close to nit-picky!

    Why would my valve cover be stuck on? I’ve tried just about everything to get it off and they act like there is a second bolt someplace…any ideas?

    • @Uraljunkie
      @Uraljunkie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Patrick… the valve covers are stuck on with the original gaskets? If so, they stick and generally need to be scraped off before installing new ones. I would try something thin like a flexible putty scraper and gently tap it into the gap to get them to separate. Only one fastener holding the cover on. Gently persuade and you’ll get them off. Have fun and good luck!

    Why didn’t you check the head torque first ( I set at 36lbs.) before adjusting valves? Why didn’t you find TDC( mark on flywheel that doesn’t have dot) which in turn would have rotating push rods on the side you adjust then rotate again to TDC and do other side? This is done with a stone cold engine which you didn’t state.Always rotate engine using Kickstarter a couple of times and doublecheck with feeler gauge valve clearance.
