    Superb comparison. Great to hear them side by side while you explore the tonal palettes of each. I thought I wanted an MO but actually I just really love the warmth of the TD3 and see the MO as a very different beast. Cheers

      I feel the MO can do the regular sound too. When you factor in the cost of a second hand td3, it's difficult not to end up with both. 😂

    • @NRG2
      @NRG2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Very interesting! I also love the “warmth” of the stock but once I heard the side by side I realized that “warmth” is essentially additional uncontrolled frequencies all over the mid range that are saturating the sound. Coming from a production stand point that’s a very undesirable phenomena to have on an instrument.. however it does have a character… I just wonder if the MO can get that same tone as well as it’s additional controls. 🤙

    If the MO had the same distortion without needing to use a pedal or daw fx it'd be great, but as it doesn't I'm gladly keeping my TD-3 to route the phones output into the filter-in. That feedback with the distortion produces really gnarly harsh tones perfect for industrial stuff.
    It's also nice that by putting the osc switch in the middle you can run any audio through the TD-3s filter and distortion without hearing the saw or square wave, though the gate/env to open up the oscilator sadly still applies

  • @AlkisT
    @AlkisT 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The primary use I have found for Accent Sweep on the extra resonant modes has actually been getting classic squelching through at extreme filter FM and overdrive settings, the filter loses its self-oscillation in those scenarios. I will sometimes play with it by flicking the switch down and maxing out the FM simultaneously as a performance control.

    This is fantastic thank you 👍I’m really enjoying my TD-3 MO especially running it into my DAW with some nice reverb and distortion vst’s. I’ve tried it with my zoom b3 and g3 pedals as well which gives you endless possibilities. Those bass lines you provided the link to in the description are excellent although I think half the fun is playing around with the internal step sequencer to see what comes out at the end - it’s like a lucky dip sometimes! Definitely looking at getting the original “unmodded” box maybe to play the higher lead frequencies. Thanks again- great video 👍

    My TD-3 MO is arriving on Monday. I already have the TD-3 unmodded version, and last week I bought the RD-6. I'm looking forward to having a jam with all three. I'm particularly interested in using the Hi & Lo Tom gate outs to drive the clocks on the TD3s. Should be able to get some interesting and evolving melodies, especially if the gated notes add up to odd numbers (for example having 7 gated notes per bar on the RD-6 pushing through a 16 step sequence on the TD-3, and 5 gated notes per bar on the RD6 pushing say a 13 step sequence on the TD-3 MO. You'll get a much longer, complex, and evolving set of patterns. I've done this on my modular using a Synthstrom Deluge for gate triggers, and it can be quite effective.

      The TD-3 is bassier and MUCH more analogue but the TB-03 has a really nice top end and is nice and quite in the rests. The 03 is very controlled and has a great square wave mid bass.

      The ground issue was down to the power supply on the TD3. Regarding the UNO drum, that was being powered by a usb power bank. With usb powered synths, drum machines devices connected to the mains, I always use a di box to eliminate any ground issues. Even a cheap one will do the trick and they enable you to use a mic preamp for your gain maximising SNR.

    The volumes are not matched. The TD-3 is about 3dB higher than the TD-3MO. Makes it kinda hard to compare them tonally.

    Thank you for the great comparison. Both are muddy in the low end. An original 303, especially the square wave blasts everything away with ultra punch and amazing clarity. I'm not convinced by these two machines at all.

      If you were to ask most people to choose between a regular 303 and a devilfish 303, most would choose the devilfish version. Using the hardware is such a rewarding experience even if your first experience of a 303 was with Rebirth like mine was. I would choose the MO every time. Get one when you’re not so broke. I’m sure you’ll enjoy every minute using it.

    Side by side just listening on my phone I get the impression that you’ve got much more control on the MO where as the Td-3 has what some ears hear as “warmth” are really just like additional out of control frequencies that are sort of bleeding into the sound. I like that warmth too but as a multi instrumentalist and producer, that’s really NOT what you want from any kind of instrument. Of course you always have EQ in post….. so I guess a real nerd is gonna want BOTH instruments! Cheers bruv!

      Paraphony is only a compromise with a lot flaws. (MiniBrute 2: 489 € / Waldorf Pulse 2: 499 € / UNO Synth Pro: 499).
      Electribe 2 has only virtual analog & pcm sounds (429 € | both TD-3 versions 109 + 249 = 358 €)

    The original devil fish definitely had a sub oscillator. It's not unique to the MO

    • @madgear303

      As mentioned on Robin Whittles website “When Behringer went into production with the TD-3-MO. Apart from the sub-oscillator, this is a direct unauthorised copy of the Devil Fish circuitry”. I have never seen the sub oscillator option anywhere on the Devil Fish options either. Where have you seen it?
