    The sentiments at the end of the video are a mirror of my mind 😁 I have high topsides and with an aft cabin the cleats are very high from the pontoons so there are some sharp angles and.........lots of creeeaaakkkkiiinnng! Little drives you mad more than getting everything set, jumping into bed when it's freezing outside and after 10 mins.....ccrrrreeeaaakkk!! Absolute insanity 😂 I find rags,especially if its raining, move pretty quickly and the hose needs to be big enough for the dockline to move freely inside it or i've found the hose gradually moves and creak-mania returns..
    But when it all goes quiet.....Magic!! Keep up the good videos..😎

    A decent pair of earplugs, the triangle ones that look a bit like Christmas trees - musicians and motorcyclists use them, not the mushy ones that come in big packs from hardware stores. That's a top tip from camping, festivals, m/cs, etc.

      Yes! We’ve learned the hard way that there’s a definite quality difference between the cheap earplugs and the more expensive ones! We never find ourselves without them these days 😁

      I like a sound machine playing a thunderstorm. The Sound + Sleep machine is the best $$. There are also Apps. If your brain picks up the pattern, get a better app. Audiobooks are also great. I like something not intense, Mrs Dalloway is great as I've always fallen asleep before any of the insane Septimus stuff. Legends of the Fall and most Patrick O'Brian Aubrey Maturin (perfect on a boat) are good. I keep the sound low so I can hear words but not quite follow what's going on.
      It's also important to figure out where the sounds are coming from on your boat. When you're sleepy and it's dark it's much harder finding them. My topping lift in light winds buzzes. Took me weeks to find it. Now I just stagger into the cockpit, let off a few inches and go back to bed. And of course in our slip, or in an anchorage around other boats we have a duty to others to silence our halyards and buzzes.
      I also have a stethoscope that you can point at sounds. Doesn't not work at all with panel squeaks in mixed swell anchorages. I'm even good at directional hearing. I've found powder where some panels meet. I suspect this must be a method to reduce squeaking. When I first anchored my boat the main aft cabin panels sounded like four trombones. Most anchorages it doesn't do this.
      I have ADHD which is probably why ear plugs only work as noise protection. My attention just dials up until I can still hear everything. If earplugs don't work for you, get a better pair and if they don't work, switch to a sound app.
      And if you still can't sleep, work on being a better sleeper. Usually if you stay awake for 24 hours you can fall asleep no matter what. (Just don't be driving.) I think because I once lived for two years above a discotheque I can generally sleep anywhere. Last year I sailed 7500 miles over three months in often very rough seas in the fore cabin of a catamaran. I was continually bounced and the hull pounded like dumpsters being tossed from all sides. I slept like a baby. I miss it. And to not sleep on a night watch, I found the first two hours I'd listen to an audiobook sound up, but the last sleepy hour I'd switch to music and dance. Just don't lift your feet.

      @@WillN2Go1 Thanks for writing that. We do tend to have a fan run at night for airflow and a bit of 'white noise'. We know a few friends that use sound machines also. :)

    I’ve only found one always successful method (26 years liveaboard) and you can only do it where the pushpit, pulpit, or guard wires are good for it; drop a light line from above, cradle the dockline in a U shape tied above to the rails so the dockline is suspended and pivots / swings or sways completely clear of the boat in fresh air. Zero squeaks. Works easiest if the line subtended between dock and cleat is pretty straight as the forces to provide the pivot angle are lower.

    Each of these tips will prevent, to some extent, rope wear. The pvc tube will move within a few hours, though. I find you need to fix it with a little lanyard or similar.

      You are correct. A little lanyard/ cord can definitely help keep it in place. Thankyou for adding that.

    As a fact the docklines made from NYLON polyamide do NOT squeak.
    The docklines from nylon polyamide are also very elastic and this is a big advantage with docklined.

    • @theincompetentcrew
      @theincompetentcrew  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ooooo, I have to be controversial. We have nylon docklines. Both New (purchased in the last months) and older. I Just went out for a mini quick test in the rain, and can get them to squeak on- teak, varnished teak, epoxy and bronze (our fairleads). Most our fairleads are around 400mm from the cleat, which gives a bit of stretch/friction when loading. I struggled to get a squeak out of stainless (didn't have any stainless fairleads to test against, only some smaller stainless cleats to try on. Also don't have any aluminums to test. But might give it a go some how when the rain eases. Also, Yes, the elasticity is why we buy nylon.
