    I hate it when people anchor right on top of us. Good luck with the repairs, looks like you're doing it right.

    Love the boat maintenance content. Never be afraid to go all in and rip it up. Do it right from the beginning and you will have the piece of mind of a job done right and in your ability to deal with it.

    I did what you did with trying to fix my cockpit deck on my Lancer 28 sailboat. I injected lots and lots of resin and it worked for me. One thing I screwed up was I removed the steering pedestal and when I reinstalled it I made sure I did not cross the steering lines as they went up through the pedestal. I tested it before I put it in the water and I could hear and feel the rudder turning just fine when I turned the steering wheel.
    I sold the boat and when I launched it for the first time after repair, as I motored ahead, I found out it was steering the opposite from what it should (turning the wheel to the right made the boat steer left). I told the new owner who had never owned a sailboat, that that was how sailboats steered, just like a tiller on a sailboat push the tiller to starboard and the sailboat steers to port.
    I think the sailboat owner caught on at some time, that the steering was wrong. I do not know if he ever corrected it, by crossing the steering cables as they ran up the steering panel, which is how they should have been in this boat.

    Wood and fiberglass boats , such a PITA! It's always the wood that rots. Building boats in the 70's and 80's I remember us saying ' this wood will last forever just coat it with resin! Ha! Now every old boat I buy had to have the rotted wood fixed...... It's probably too late but I would use the much cheaper polyester ( and smellier) resins for a job like this. Also I would fully fiberglass the deck then fiberglass on top some pads or strips of metal or wood to mount the railing to so that there is no penetrations of the hardtop skin. Good luck!
    Cheers Warren

      I def use polyester for the big stuff like this. and thanks for the advice on the "base pads" although too late :-/ I did bed them very well though.

    Jupiter, Fla! I grew up boating there and Stuart. Live in Palm Beach Gardens now. I love your video series and it is inspiration to finish my boat restoration and head to the Exumas! Unfortunately, we are also dealing with rotten wood...

    You should try trowling for dolphin about 5 knots in your whaler, with a green artifical squid, ( with two trible hooks ) the lure about two feet below the surface.

    Billy... you were moving around so quickly on that upper deck, I wasn't able to see the structure BELOW that fiberglass that you tried to lay down as a solution. Just what is under neath all that rotten wood?? And, did you rip up all the rotten areas as far as it travelled up towards the bow ??

    Good Grief dude! Offshore fishing WITHOUT a PFD? What were you thinking? Safety first at all times when boating solo. Glad you caught a "Proof" fish so we can all rest easier with your fishing talent! More Sierra please!

      Agree about the PFD, inflatable PFD's you barely know its on, don't care how young and fit you are, none of the people that drowned without one knew there time was coming up.

    Have you considered using Thompson' Water seal to protect new or good wood? Goes a long way -looks like kerosene- relatively unexpensive-and excellant re-waterproofing of old canvas like dodgers-awnings?

    • @Tulasendlesssummer
      @Tulasendlesssummer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking of using it on our Bimini. have you tried it for that?

    • @robertparnoff6424
      @robertparnoff6424 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and no, Our bimini was vinyl but had a brown dodger that I used it on more than once because it eventual will lose its waterproofing properties after about a year. Also used it on the cloth awnings on all the windows on my trawler. It will darken the materal somewhat but I didn't care. When we started " aboard " in 80's a gallon was $20, well worth it. Went on like kerocene consistancy.

    Well there was good and bad. That wood was not terribly decomposed and still had a lot of cellulose but it was wet and delaminated. You had the right idea about epoxy but you had a few things going against you. #1, The epoxy you were using is WAY too thick. The ONLY epoxy you can use in enclosed space like that is Git Rot penetrating epoxy. It is the thinnest type without volatiles like xylene or alcohol that becomes entrapped and hinder the curing process. Use a bag of disposable syringes to draw up and inject into the holes . When it becomes slow to accept the Git Rot, start using West Systems fast cure. You don’t want the holes to suck dry before it cures leaving a void under the sheeting. #2 wood was way too wet. The moisture will displace or stop the epoxies progress. A manifold with bunch of small tubes like aquarium air lines plumbed to a vacuum pump to dry it out or after few dry months. #3 You drilled completely through the top sheeting. The first over shoot can be plugged with hard packed paper towel. Drill only 75% of the thickness. Bottom line, sometimes you just have to rip it out like you did.

    We are buying a trawler and living at the marina but the marina has terrible Wi-Fi. What do y'all do for internet? We only use our laptop or roku smart tv at night. Our phones have a data connection but I can't figure out how to cast from phone to tv. We mostly watch Acorntv stream. Not regular TH-cam tv or cable. How can we stream our favorite pay apps?

      I like to cruise the ocean when its calm and the icw when its rough. I would def take the icw down from Norfolk to at least cape fear. So much cool stuff to see in there. Skip Georgia ICW unless going up to see Savanah..

    • @mosipd
      @mosipd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you guys haven't left already don't venture up the ICW in New Jersey. You're in Maryland so pick it up down there. The last I remember, and this was about 8 years ago now, the areas around Shark River Inlet and Little Egg Harbor were a mess, especially Little Egg Harbor. The markers are notorious around there for shifting all over the place and there are many slightly submerged sandbars. It's by far the most dangerous inlet in New Jersey and dredging doesn't start until this summer, finally. I mostly fish the canyons so I don't do much inshore boating anymore, but the last time I went down the ICW to Cape May it was bad. Most of ICW near Atlantic City literally runs along the worst crime ridden streets and almost all of it is no wake. It's crazy.

      looks like that guy is just a cheapskate - wanting to park his boat somewhere for nothing. Taking up space from people, like full-time cruisers, that need it. Too bad he's clueless tie-ing up to someones anchor boey. I'd cut him loose if that was my anchor.

    For video content consider more Sierra and you having fun in the sun and less rotten boat. That would generate a lot more views and likes = more TH-cam money. Endlesssummer?...... I'm not feeling it anymore. I'm beginning to wonder if you can even kite or para-surf anymore. You and Sierra both kite surfing would be awesome. Lately on video it's like you're in a rut and wasting your youth living from repair to repair. You guys need to sell your car and land possessions and take this boat on the road. You have the whole Caribbean where you could be teaching lessons or taking people surfing, snorkeling and diving; working your way island to island. Eventually you can live off the You Tube funds and spend all your time filming yourselves having a good time. Otherwise you might as well live in an apartment and I doubt Sierra signed on for the dull life. Just keeping it real.
