In a sense they’re already here. They’re not super common yet, and require some specialist / developer knowledge to set up, but I think by the end of 2025 we’ll see at least basic AI NPCs in mods and simple experimental games. If you want to take a look I think SoVITs is the best text to speech ATM (quite a bit better than shown in this video), and there’s some more robust Minecraft AI mods out there if you have the system to run them. Tbh the hardware side is a bit limited though; the best strategy is just to have a spare PC to run some of the AI dependencies on, lol 😅
@@Ristaak I mean, how much cheaper do you need it to get? You could already do a demo like what was shown in this video for free if your system is weak but has enough RAM (32GB), or potentially run it on two 16GB ARM SBCs. If your GPU has at least 12GB of VRAM (RTX 3060 comes to mind), then it should be possible to do at least something with smart use of resources already. There is kind of a floor in the resources required to do real time or semi-realtime AI, though. It’s not crazy expensive in my opinion, but to each their own. I guess if fast Feedforward networks take off it should be possible to run a pretty reasonable LLM with text to speech on a CPU locally, but I suppose we’ll see how it shakes out.
