There's a lot of funny and interesting drama in Minecraft modding if you look. Forestry would have its beehives explode when another mod was present. The original developer of Forge made Forge because the previous standard mod loader author didn't want to work with him for no reason in particular. Said developer was then mutinied against 12-ish years later by all the other Forge developers (who then made NeoForge) because he wouldn't stop insulting optimization mods developers and acting immaturely. MCHeli included a way for server owners to take a screenshot of any player's screen. OreSpawn's developer's descent into conspiracy theory madness.
Mod Makers: "I'm gonna add something malicious to my mod(s) because I'm petty af." Players: "I'm upset about this and won't be playing your mods." Mod Makers: "I don't understand why people are mad and why my mods are being removed. >:( "
Petty and mildly inconvenient for players, but at least I don't think it ever became outright malicious. Both sides were annoying and kind of deserved it, but at least it just ended with some new config options and a "Pumpkin of Shame" gag.
@@alespic I'm pretty sure this was not, in fact, the first or last time Gregorious had a spat with another modder like that. Malicious code ≠ virus. Malicious code does things the end user does not intend or want it to do, I.E. crash Minecraft or randomly show you images of the TF2 mercs but buff if your username is "Absolutely_Str8." It's called malicious code because it acts against the end user that installed it, rather than for. TL:DR about the pixelmon. Allowed the devs of the mod to blacklist servers and players. Claimed it was an attempt to prevent abuse and cheating. It's no longer in the mod.
@SubtitleXD ok, but what's the point in one when it literally doesn't add nor really shortens anything when the segment is short already? I'd understand if the whole video was about Pixelmon only, but it's literally a segment shorter than 1,5 minutes

As someone who was on the Traincraft team (just artist status on the side lines) when all of that went down, theres a lot more that had happened. Much of the information presented is only partial to the full scope of the actions taken those days. Yes, Eternals actions where not the best at all, but I will say the gentleman Paul that was always referenced in those screenshots is no saint. He was effectively banned himself from Curseforge and github after the investigations from the platforms. The mod was reinstated after a Curseforge representative had come to our aid. I do encourage viewers to look deeper if desired.
TBH im fine with petty crashed mods drama, i rather chose two dev making funny chat saying incompatible to x, harmless joke with "pumpkin of shame" than a mods that have complex system to steal more thousands of people personal information and expand it like a virus

I remember that curseforge attack!! I joined the server upon hearing about it and there was SO MANY in chat freaking out..the mods were extremely unprofessional 😒 they kept trying to gaslight everyone into thinking there was no breach, no malware, that nothing was happening. One in particular was making the most fuss trying to pretend it wasn’t happening but I don’t remember their username. The curseforge team was asleep, yes ALL of them, they didn’t help at ALL; by the time they came on the community already made like documentation on how to test your computer for it, what time to be wary of (if you used this list of mods or modpacks in _ days you should check your computer), and how to get rid of it. We literally had ALL the information including where it likely started (the info you gave) and photos of what the malwear code looked like! Gotta give the community a hand for how they dealt with it and at a decent speed 👏
Speaking as a moderator for a different service, moderators in any big community are more about damage control rather than helping people. It's easy to get into the mindset of complacency when you don't expect malware of such a frightening degree to affect your service. Hopefully that was a big wakeup call for them

@@neztech.Honestly, Tinker's Construct is probably to blame for that "bug". Tinker's Construct added a feature where a tool with Auto-Smelt and Fortune combined would apply the Fortune if the smelted item wasn't a block (allowing you to get more than one charcoal per log or more than one ingot per iron ore if you combined the two enchantments - a pretty nice and balanced feature, in my opinion.) GregTech added a recipe allowing a player to smelt an iron block into 9 ingots because it had a pattern where every item made out of a metal could be smelted to recycle it into ingots and metal blocks fell into that category. The result was that breaking an iron block with Auto-Smelt & Fortune would yield 9 *or more* iron ingots. The argument about who should change their feature and fix the "bug" is what caused the hostility.

I logged onto my browser and was logged out of all of my accounts on discord, yt, twitch, and other socials, while I couldn’t log back in no matter how many times I tried. I let my computer just sit for a while and it seemed to be better, but after another week the computer wouldn’t even run, being stuck on the startup screen. I opened up the computer to check the hardware, and noticing that it had zero problem with the memory and all other components, just ended up taking it apart. 1:11 It would be nice if flatpak sandboxing evolved further to prevent this type of stuff. I use flatpaks and just hope the userbase is small enough that malware developers don't care about us enough. The launcher supposedly can't access anything outside its directory.
Posting intentional malware should have no-strike policy. As in, the person gets banned from the modrepository, and the mod gets "freed" for anyone to fork and take over. (Towards anyone screeching about copyright issues, intentionally spreading malware is a criminal offence, no matter how many "We take no responsibility etc." lines are put in a ToS)
They absolutely should be banned. But lol, the mod shouldn't get "taken over by anyone". It's still the creator's effort/work no matter how bad of a person they are... Just like how Notch is still the original creator of Minecraft despite turning out to be a racist douche. You know what a such proposal results in however? Making it hard to document the community or any events regarding to such mods, people getting falsely accused of "having worked on malware before" by petty competitors, etc. The bigger a community is, the less you can apply such ways. Also that's not even how copyright works lol
They absolutely *should* be taken over. It's the difference between keeping the id and address and switching the caretaker, or waiting for someone to reupload the mod while breaking all links and dependencies. Any framework that would prohibit modyfing the mods would also prohibit their existence without explicit personal allowance of the original work owner (not author). Copyright is cancer already, but if laws were made up to retards like you, mods wouldn't exist in the first place.

That's a real shame regarding Tinker's Construct, my friends and I loved that mod to bits. Never heard of GregTech though. We were big on a "Mech and Magick" style of custom modpacks we'd curate ourselves. So a bit of Thermal Expansion, Thaumcraft, Tinkers, Applied Energistics, things like that. A few magic mods, dimension mods, and technical mods, and a few farming or building mods... just a little bit of everything for everyone. But one thing we *_ALL ALWAYS LOVED_* was Tinker's. It was fun to create custom tools that matched our aesthetics. Was a lot of fun. From the sound of things, Tinker's creator was largely being the better man - They initially made a harmless notification and provided a simple solution to a problem, whereas the Greg mod creator went and lashed out with a passive aggressive Wall-o'-Text. TiC ended up calling for a ceasefire, admitting they were being petty and harming both their communities and the mods' QoL... though he definitely slipped up by putting in the fixes again afterwards. However the Greg mod guy did lash out and make his mod unplayable for TiC's creator, whereas TiC's simply just made his changes optional. There's a lot going on that I wasn't present for, of course. So I don't have the broiling blood over the issue. I'm sure there's a lot of nuance that I don't understand that those in the trenches back then do. I just miss my cool forge and smithy mod. The current replacements that have taken up the mantle just don't.... scratch that itch the same way. Then again, since malicious mods have become a thing in recent years... I've just stuck to vanilla game. I think the most "modded" part of my game is Vanilla Tweaks resource packs. And hopefully they don't up and corrupt my game. I'm surprised you didn't touch on the Forestry drama with Technic. Basically, the author was pissed that Technic included the mod in their pack without asking him first, and when he asked them to remove it they declined to acquiesces to his request. His response was then to update code that the bee hives from his mod would explode with the force of a CASUC Reactor if it saw that the mod directory it was in was in a pack with Technic in the name. Needless to say, this was shortly removed, but yea... that happened.
surprised you didn't bring up the curseforge outbreak similar to skyrage targeting plugins. not that long ago there was a virus that would specifically targeting every .jar file on one's pc, meaning that when mod creators compiled and released their own jars, they would unknowingly be spreading the infection. heinous stuff.
I'm surprised Forestry isn't here, but i guess that was around a decade ago now... The dev of forestry didnt like the technic pack and its devs and added code to his mod to basically make the game unplayable if it was installed in the technic pack. Better than wolves also had something like that prior to the forestry drama with forge i think?
honestly, this just makes me realize how pathetically petty minecraft mod makers are💀 most of these stories genuinely gave me second hand embarrassment LOLLLL
Functionality based on username is something that's baked into Minecraft itself. Notch always drops an apple when killed, DeadMau5 has a custom player model, and Dinnerbone is always upside-down, for example.
Regarding landmaster: The "malicious code" they added wasn't actually about folks trashtalking one of their mods- Specifically landmaster targeted a trio of pedophiles which landmaster repeated pointed out both to curseforge and mojang as a problem. When the responsible parties took no action, then landmaster added the "malicious" code to ensure these guys weren't grooming kids anymore. Cursforge likes to sweep that part of the story under the rug though, for obvious reasons. Still sad seeing landmaster slandered this way. If memory serves, all the code did was reload the game when those certain people tried to join servers with the mod installed, so it didn't even prevent them from playing- it just kept them away from children.
Kinda surprised you didn't mention the OG malicious mod code. Forestry back in the day added code to refuse to run when installed in a Technic modpack because Technicpack devs violated the license of the mod, distributing it without permission. This led to Tekkit removing it and a couple other mods.
Agreed. Those "mods" I see more that it is just a hack/cheat since it doesn't do much in adding new things. Yet most of that player base are blind sheep thinking it's safe when it clearly isn't.

The tinkers and Greg tech drama was the funniest thing ever
There's a lot of funny and interesting drama in Minecraft modding if you look.
Forestry would have its beehives explode when another mod was present. The original developer of Forge made Forge because the previous standard mod loader author didn't want to work with him for no reason in particular. Said developer was then mutinied against 12-ish years later by all the other Forge developers (who then made NeoForge) because he wouldn't stop insulting optimization mods developers and acting immaturely. MCHeli included a way for server owners to take a screenshot of any player's screen. OreSpawn's developer's descent into conspiracy theory madness.
They must've had beef in their childhood because I would not be mad if a part of my mod had to be disabled
Seriously like what made you the boss to be so petty at your dev and happy the boss got what he deserved
anything to piss of the gregtech fanbase
tech mod developers trying not to be egomaniacs challenge
Don't forget the time the Orespawn and Godzilla mods were hard-coded to despawn any mobs that fought each other due to online arguments.
Mod Makers: "I'm gonna add something malicious to my mod(s) because I'm petty af."
Players: "I'm upset about this and won't be playing your mods."
Mod Makers: "I don't understand why people are mad and why my mods are being removed. >:( "
the gregtech and tinkers construct beef was so funny
Yeah, TiC dev was salty and got what he deserved tbh
@@owerpovered3330 while true, Gregorious is far from being a good person and has had his fair share of petty moments and other behaviours.
don't forget the leather boots oredictionary being turned into dear_greggy_greg_please_do_kindly_stuff_a_sock_in_it
Petty and mildly inconvenient for players, but at least I don't think it ever became outright malicious. Both sides were annoying and kind of deserved it, but at least it just ended with some new config options and a "Pumpkin of Shame" gag.
@@alespic I'm pretty sure this was not, in fact, the first or last time Gregorious had a spat with another modder like that. He never really had the greatest attitude when it came to the idea of GregTech coexisting with other mods besides IC2. A lot of his comments from the time are very telling of his attitude- namely that he felt HIS image of balance was the only correct one.
This basically isn't a virus video, it's a "mod devs having petty arguments" video
So yes, it's not so much a virus video as it is a devs have petty arguments video, but the point of the video is how the devs used their mods to attack and annoy players.
@@Nugget111uh1 I know, but usually when you think of malicious code you think of a virus. This is just a bunch of petty devs

Funnily enough, mod blacklist wars like corails aren't the first time it's happened. Classic Doom mods had a similar incident between a map mod and project brutality. Sometimes, mod authors do be having some beef.
It's more of a "some mods ruin themselves if they detect brutal doom" thing.

Tinker's Construct added a feature where a tool with Auto-Smelt and Fortune combined would apply the Fortune if the smelted item wasn't a block (allowing you to get more than one charcoal per log or more than one ingot per iron ore if you combined the two enchantments - a pretty nice and balanced feature, in my opinion.)
GregTech added a recipe allowing a player to smelt an iron block into 9 ingots because it had a pattern where every item made out of a metal could be smelted to recycle it into ingots and metal blocks fell into that category.

As a member of one of the mods community, the stuff for traincraft happened years ago if memory serves and largely isn't a concern anymore

Then again, since malicious mods have become a thing in recent years... I've just stuck to vanilla game. I think the most "modded" part of my game is Vanilla Tweaks resource packs. And hopefully they don't up and corrupt my game. Xisumavoid and the Hermitcraft wouldn't turn out to be bad eggs....right?

Ah buddy, if you think any of these are bad, let me tell you the story of Better Than Wolves sometime...
Mod developers beefing because of the compatibility between their mods is the funniest shit I've ever seen.
Imma download all the malware mod and see wat happens
Lol

rip your pc
based.

if i make a minecraft mod ill make an anticheat part which gives hackers a curse of binding carved pumpkin on their head which cant be removed
pretty sure the hackers could just remove the effect and/or the item, doesnt stop them from using kill aura either
the hollowknight music caught me off guard, what a pleasant melody :)
W game
As always a basically perfect video.
Kinda surprised you didn't mention the OG malicious mod code. Forestry back in the day added code to refuse to run when installed in a Technic modpack because Technicpack devs violated the license of the mod, distributing it without permission. This led to Tekkit removing it and a couple other mods.
Every single hypixel Skyblock mod ever
Agreed. Those "mods" I see more that it is just a hack/cheat since it doesn't do much in adding new things.
Yet most of that player base are blind sheep thinking it's safe when it clearly isn't.
@@moltenking2362are you braindead?
Oh man, I thought Phobos would've been on this list. Although, that was a hack client.
The irony of Mojang saying Pixelmon devs shouldn't have control over servers just to do the exact same thing years later. Someone should've spammed Mojangs' contact channels with a screenshot of the message.
Banning someone because of a disorder is crazy. What has autism to the situation?
I heard about cases of ruining mod code in other games. The Sims had a drama, where a patreon modder damaged their files so people wouldnt steal/repost the mods. It sadly affected the honest payers too. There were even slurs in the code or files
6:34 The guy in the tweet is the same guy who banned himself. But, his original reason for banning himself was that "It was childish", probably referring to having a banlist in the mod. However, this reason was later changed by the mod author to being banned for autism, which in the context of everything else, was definitely meant as a slur
