  • Welcome to another video.
    This time we had this Audi Q7 with a 3.0TDI CRT engine booked in just for timing chain replacement as prevention. Car was behaving normally on roads and also there were no fault codes in the diagnostic. We proceed to work as usual so engine out. We inspected everything at the same time and we did find loads of carbon in the intake. Owner agreed to proceed with the extra work and once we were putting everything back together we found this ....Thanks for watching , if you want to know what's going on daily at our workshop you can follow us on instagram !

    And this is why I’m still running a 27 year old C4 A6. It’s now on 355k and the engine has never been apart. Will still go between 6k oil changes without topping up too.
    Making machines durable is a way of “saving the polar bears” that seems to have been forgotten.

      Ha, me too - I have a 1996 C4 A6 2.5tdi. Owned since 1999, I'm the second owner. It has 300k now, the only major component to ever be replaced on the engine was the fuel pump, at around 270k. I also have a 2020 SQ7 Tdi, and I'm glad I doubled the oil changes from new.

      @@highlandmalt6368 Smart man. And those factory 0w30 oils are a no go. Also recomended is to raise the variable oil pressure to 2+bar by an oil map remap. So many cars die too soon because of essentialy oil starvation and premature wear. For what You may ask? 3-6% ( at best ) lower fuel consumption. 😔

      My C4 A6 was delivered 18. Nov. 1994 with 140 hp 2.5 TDI 5-cylinder. It was one of the first 140 hp engines delivered as they started delivery at 1. Nov. 1994. At 75k kilometers I went to ABT and they did 160 hp on it. At 335k Kilometers I only changed the clutch, cause I had a lot of heavy trailer transports with it (there where marbles and tiles on the trailor mostly up to 2 tons often more) and it was a 6-gear manual gearbox. It was the most awesome car, I did only service all 15k kilometers which was likely all 8 weeks. NO repairs otherwise…. It just run. I gave it to my father at 335k and he drove it up to 500k then the engine broke, cause he missed to change the crankshaft bearing, which I told him to do. The change would have been easy and low cost, but anyway, that was the most awesome car. It was with full options and runs between 4.6 to 7.5 liters/100 km. But 7.5 only full throttle on german autobahn, which means up to 240 km/h
      Where is that green engineering now? What are the improvements? Bad working technics can‘t save the planet or polar bears and I can‘t see the better efficiency to that 1994 car…

    I bought my last Audi 20 years ago, a 1990 Audi 80 with the solid 1.8 engine running on petrol and LPG.
    In those days Audis were solid cars that could last half a million kilometers on LPG without engine failure or manual valve adjustment ( engines had self adjusting valves). Today, the Audi's look good buy you need 'Audi money' to keep it on the road.

    I love watching your channel and the rebuilds you do....I still find it amazing how much carbon builds up in the Audi engines...given today's technology with fuel and oils and dealer servicing the amount of carbon is unreal...I used to overhaul old heavy duty diesel engines on earth moving equipment that had done thousands of hours running and cannot remember ever seeing one with so much carbon builds up as you are showing us..thanks for sharing you quality workmanship and dedication to doing the job right..👍👍

      Carbon build up has nothing to do with servicing. The issue is that todays technology if forced to find ways to reduce emissions at the same time as improving economy. Direct injection petrol engines that don't clean the inlet of deposits from ventilated crankcase gases, exhaust gas recirculation etc.

      @@toeknee2u it's called the design life of a component, it would not make sense to test above a certain mileage/age so they make the cars with this sort of minimal lifetime... the funny thing is that the design life of say the old VE pump TDIs was probably less than what it is for these new engines, it's just that the simulation softwares (and computation capacity) have become much more accurate and widely available. So above this mileage anything can fail and the manufacturer doesn't really know what and when will likely happen. Nothing is designed to break! There's just a minimum it has to last.

Great to see a preventative maintenance approach (like an airplane) here but the economics are surely questionable i.e. almost £10k spent on a car worth trade in of £25 - 27k? What is next to fail? Probably suspension pumps etc? Terrible engineering compromises to meet so called green targets; how many of these cars will end up in scrap yards at 10 - 12 yrs old as no one will be able to afford to maintain them. (Look at the recent SH values of decade old Range Rovers / Discoverys etc to see this). Finally, its the first time I heard of oil pressure remaps - very interesting / useful.

The timing chain will supply and fling plenty of oil to the cam gears etc. My approach with these V6 VW diesels has been to 1/2 the service internal for the oil and filter changes. Also reprogram the start/stop functionality to default off instead of on. Pretty much all of your issues will go away. I change oil at 7-8,00 kms max. They are an incredibly durable, efficient and powerful engine. Unfortunately many people run well over their service intervals (even with new cars) something you just can't do with these engines.

    I hate the BS of extended service intervals + low tension oil rings on newer engines.
    Like is it really a clean engine when you have to tear it apart at 150.000-200.000 km, just to saving single digits reduction Co2 emission.
    I 100% support cleaner engines but the balance between emissions and longevity for sure took a wrong turn.

    You, Sir, are a rare thing these days. A genuine mechanic and engineer, who thoughtfully diagnoses issues without simply throwing a parts cannon at fault codes. Fantastic explanation. This not being covered under warranty is disgusting when it is failure by design.
    When pathetic increases in efficiency are achieved by bad engineering that literally causes a whole car to fail and so costly it is not worth fixing, then the Polar Bears are surely doomed.
    I'm proud to drive a 25 year old 5.7l V8 LandCruiser that still runs like new, that by virtue of running forever, is actually the true saviour of the Polar Bears, as others will have bought 5+ "eco friendly" new cars in the same lifetime that this has simply drank a bit more fuel.
    Please tell me what's worse for the planet. An old (relatively) simple engine drinking a few more gallons, or making a whole brand new car from scratch every few years.
    What a massive con our governments and the big manufacturers are selling us.
    I'd like to see VW run that famous "if only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen" ad campaign now and see the public reaction.

    Hi, I really enjoy watching your very informative and interesting videos.
    I think this situation goes back to what you were saying about the tell tale signs of tarnish and staining within the engine and obvious lack of oil changes.
    diesel oil can degrade and become sludgy if not changed regularly leading to poor circulation which is crucial with this engine design, seemingly relying on oil to gravity seep down and lubricant all the moving parts 😮 with the added problem of lower oil pressure not delivering enough, quickly to the top of the engine..
    I watch a video, basically the oil was change 5 times and engine run each time before the oil actually came out of the sump clean😮 apparently he said a person didn't believe the oil was changed when their car was serviced, its because they didn't realise the oil turns black as soon as you start the engine.
    It would be ridiculous and expensive to flush oil 5 times
    I would say and engine oil flush addertive with the old oil then mabe 1 extra oil change should be sufficient but it just proves how dirty the internals of an engines can become with higher mileage especially with the lack of oil changes which is Crucial for the longevity of an engine..
    Hopes this information helps 😊👍

    • @jimb7406
      @jimb7406 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The diesel engine oil looks blackish immediately after an oil and filter change because up to 10% of the old oil does not drain out of the engine. It stays in the oil galleries, the oil pump and also remains as coating all the engine surfaces. This is perfectly normal and happens to every engine. Maybe the 3.0L V6 would be ok if 5k - 10k mile oil intervals were applied, not the crazy 20000 mile long life intervals.

    • @marinobottali7823
      @marinobottali7823 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jimb7406 yep lack of oul changes is precisely what causes carbon deposits and sludge build up over time hence a flush would help with with fresh oil run through then another refill with the new filter.
      this is only pennies compared to a ruined engine that needs rebuilding or replacing because of sheer ignorance of regular maintenance which is crucial with the longevity of a diesel engine!

    Guys, did you ever heard to bring hydrogen into the intake to prvent all that carbon on intake parts? From what I read and saw, the hypdrogen is burning down that carbon completely so that even the particelfilter keeps clean. Maybe this would be the better way to engenieer green engines than with the egr-system. I will try it on my own 3.0 TDI A6. It‘s an ASB engine from 2007. Thanks for that hint with the oilpressure mapping, I will ask my guy who did also the engine mapping on 300hp if he can adjust the oilpressure mapping too. And I let you know the results of the non egr and particelfilter plus intake hydrogen system.

    Can you do a video on your general recommendations to keep are VAAG time bombs running? Or are we just screwed? Best service intervals for tdi oil, dsg, etc. Is there any way to reduce egr soot build up?

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Best advice for service intervals is oil look at the ardous service time, and halve it for oil changes. So if they say 20 000 km interval for oil, ardous service 10 000km, change every 5000 km. Oil and filters are cheap, and oil is very much recyclable as well, provided it is not contaminated in the bulk tanks with non engine oil things. so will recycle into oil again. Filters as well, though generally they get crushed to remove old oil, and the metal recycled, and the paper and plastic are good in shredded form as furnace fuel. Very rare for any vehicle I own to actually get to the recommended service interval before I change the oil on it, as I can easily do it myself.
      For gearboxes take the "lifetime" as being warranty period, and change before half of that time.

    • @asimsparks
      @asimsparks 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@SeanBZASo true. Its getting mad about service intervals. 15000 miles before oil change? Really? Plus car owners push it a bit more. Looked at a few cars with so called "full service history. Cars done 70-80K miles with just 4-5 services. These cars start to fall apart as soon as they are 100k miles, mostly with catastrophic failures.
