She’s one of my fave creatures and looking at the decklist, I’m surprised I didn’t make room for her 😅 must’ve been one of the final cuts I made for budget purposes. Oof! Fortunately this deck has gotten cheaper since this video (I just checked lol)
Ive been tinkering with this guy since he was spoiled (since I’ve been waiting for this lore dude since he was briefly mentioned in the original Ixalan). I’m way less budget because Ive got stuff like a mana crypt, vault, and ancient tomb and the like lying around. Bat tribal was never the way to go, I agree. His role is exactly that of an enabler for things like Waste Not and Geth’s Grimoire. Honorable mention goes to Arterial Flow; even without the secondary, 3 mana for each opponent ditching 2 is amazing. I also jam a reanimator/devotion subtheme into mine, stuff like Necrogen mists is good for getting fatties out of hand and into grave, where most mono black reanimators struggle with that. A fun interaction I asked a local judge about to make sure of is Bloodletter of Aclazotz and Gray Merchant; it works exactly like you think, and that’s a lot of life you gain back. Normally Bloodletter doesn’t really fit in this build you’ve got, since a lot of damage is happening on their turn ideally, but under Megrims when you’re swinging with Aclazotz, and Lethemancer upkeep triggers, during your turn its a 4 mana wound reflection that provides 3 devotion for gray merchant. A thing to note about the Raven Man, is under things like Lethemancer, you’ll only get one unblocking bird that turn, whereas if you use Bottomless Pit or Necrogen Mists in a 4 player game, that’s 3 birds from the opponents turn and 1 on yours, which even not blocking thats a lot of sacrifice value. I was against him at first but the fodder speaks for itself, really. Thats more mana for Phyrexian Tower, more draw off Skullclamp, etc. I got a lot more to say on this deck from my testing, that I don’t have the time or space to write here 😂 besides, I have more field testing that will be needed.
Phew! That was a long read but I enjoyed it 🙏 thanks for your comment! And yeah I think once you take the budget restriction off, the reanimator theme becomes wayyy more viable 😍 and if you’re running budget-less, then definitely cards like Necrogen Mists are so good in this deck. I think Words of Waste is really good too is good since it hits all opponents. Like if you skip your draw step to make everyone empty handed, you draw 3 with Aclazotz anyway I think Bloodletter was also like $20 at the time I was making this (preorder prices lol) so I subbed it out for the $1 Wound Reflection (thank you Doctor Who for the reprint) but man, I think it’d do so well in this deck I hope your field tests go great tho 💪 and I really appreciate you putting the time in to share a bunch of your thoughts here
@@MTGJanktown Absolutely! I’d love to come leave my findings here when I get some tests and tweaks done. Good old Entomb/Reanimate/Vilis puts you up on so many resources its crazy. Demon of Dark Schemes has been an all star especially with a sacrifice outlet and Gray Merchant - if you find yourself in a board state with Abhorrent Overlord or a Phyrexian Altar as well, that may as well be infinite because you just keep bringing back Overlord for harpies, sacrificing the harpies for mana and energy, and bringing back the Gray Merchant for at least 7 a use! I used to grind that way in Liliana, Heretical Healer. Personally I find the Megrim-like effects too slow and clunky to set up; myself, I like to get Waste Not or Grimoire as fast as possible, and an early Siphon Mind goes a LONG way. Greed/Arguel’s Blood Fast are also worth considering to keep fueling your hand if you find yourself low. Mono Black has so much it can do, and in my opinion, I feel Aclazotz as a deck addresses two of Black’s biggest weaknesses: reanimator being vulnerable to Rest in Peace effects, and life loss for costs of cards. If your opponent drops a Rest in Peace effect, you can turn that against them by ripping their hand into exile and just playing more battle cruiser if you don’t outright just Feed the Swarm. And our commander having lifelink helps our life costs, but even more so the synergy with Sangromancer getting us 13 total (9 from discards and 4 from our commander) every turn we swing is glorious, and thats not even mentioning Gray Merchant!
@@shadowofseattle1338yeah I don’t think a discard deck can have a better payoff than Tergrid, but the draw clause on Acla is fairly decent. Definitely not the linchpin of the deck, but drawing up to 3 is some good value
Cool video and it was fun to watch but I feel like somebody, and it might as well be me, has to say that $85 doesn't feel synonymous with "casual" or "budget" when it comes to a CCG. Maybe this just says more about me than anybody else, but if I spend $85 on one deck, let alone a single card, I have to start reevaluating my life choices 😂
😅 you have a point. But a lot of casual decks I’ve seen running around seem to be at least like $150-300 without even trying. Admittedly, it’s a fairly expensive hobby 😬 The most expensive cards in this build are Tinybones at $8, and then some $5-ish cards like Haunt of Hightower, Temple bell, Skullclamp, and Phyrexian Reclamation. The latter 2 are pretty good to have in general, but the former are quite specific to this kinda deck
Want to turn your opponents hopes and dreams to ashes and then wash them away with their tears? Sadistic Hypnotist. 75¢. Could-not-be-a-better-bang-for-your-3/4ths-of-a-buck!
Love the list. Braids is also a good way to make use of the bats you make

Excellent jumping point! I’ve been looking for a good budget list to start off with this commander!

Aclazotz will go great in my tergrid deck
Oh for sure! Tergrid works well too as part of the 99 of Aclazotz! 🙏
@MTGJanktown Acla is a good payoff, but it's not an engine itself
