Jimmy only needed 7 mana for the Rift. This boy wanted the extra 1 up so he could spin the top for dramatic effect. This is the level of petty I strive to be.
The way it was edited in the video is definitely for dramatic effect, but from a gameplay perspective it's entirely possible that what Jimmy wanted to draw next would depend on whether or not he played Cyclonic Rift that turn
I really love the animation that they've added to the video. I'm also happy anytime Mel comes back because of all the hilarious interactions in the group.
Jimmy saying "of course I have it, it's ya boi. he always has it." is funny because that assuredness could have been useful for the many times he didn't have lands.
Whoops! We accidentally had the deck lists marked as private. They should all be viewable now. Just look in the more info box below the video for the links. Apologies for the mistake!
The Command Zone So in the description, it says that you're not announcing winners until Friday, October 20? I guess it's a week away if you time travel ;)
Josh you have done simply an amazing job on this video, totally in keeping with the outstanding standard you’ve set for it over the last year. The professional quality is just mind blowing and I’m really happy to see all the success you guys are having.
I agree to all of this. I thought the Cradle was toast as soon as it hit, to stop Zacama from hitting the board. NM, the tower with a shitton of cards in hand...
I feel like jimmy was stalling to dissuade some aggression from mel and craig. they were both pretty scary early on, and he just needed to bide his time, not play it aggressive and blow up the scary persons mana (if that was the plan, it worked perfectly)
I was listening to a football match while watching the podcast, and at the exactly moment Jimmy cast Cyclonic Rift, the crowds cheered for a goal. Perfect for the ocasion.
I resent that. Plenty of ways to play Azorius that isn’t Control heavy. My Azorius deck uses Azor as the Commander, but I built it around Fliers-Tribal and Card Draw. With just a handful of countermagic
EDH/Commander is my favorite format, mostly because it seems to be more about casual fun, so I would have swung at everyone with the vampire tokens. It's more fun for me if it works, and it's more fun for my opponent(s) if they get to use cyclonic rift. I tend like those big magic moments regardless of who in my play group gets them. In short, more fun is more fun! Fortune favors the bold!
1:08 - Introductions 1:48 - Deck "techs" 2:54 - *Joke about playing commander on the command zone* #NoChannelNamingRagrets 3:42 - BEGINNING OF THE GAMMMMMEEEE
Why should they regret naming the channel? The channel was for the podcast, and that remains absolutely, 100% EDH-centred. Nothing about 'The Command Zone' has ever changed. The mistake people made was assuming "Game Knights" (note: 'EDH' or 'Commander' is not a part of the "Game Knights" name) was actually a part of the podcast itself, when actually it is simply another series on a channel that already existed. Many, MANY media ventures, most famously MTV, do not change their major branding just because they choose to add extra products. All people are doing is effectively the same as complaining about Apple Computers releasing a portable music player, or getting the series Breaking Bad from American Movie Channel. And that would be absolutely STUPID. As would be complaining about Game Knights being released alongside an EDH podcast, when the podcast you actually subscribed to never actually ever stopped being produced. What exactly are you complaining about, other than your own distinct lack of understanding brands/sub-brands/widening of products? If anything, having 2HG/Limited/supplementary product/etc formats doesn't contradict "The Command Zone" branding anyway, since if you aren't just a fanboy only getting into the EDH craze and don't know anything else about MtG, you'd know Commander was actually named AFTER the Command Zone, which exists in all formats. Not the other way around. So if you do wanna get tricky about definitions, at least know you're wrong when you say "Command Zone means Commander", uh no, it doesn't. Never has. It's simply another zone in all formats. "Command Zone" has only ever actually meant a non-'removed from game' zone in the game where some non-interferable-with cards are. (Note: I'm not talking directly to the person I replied to - just anyone who does complain about Game Knights not being EDH. Go complain MTV doesn't show music videos anymore, instead; it's the same complaint, and actually far more relevant and valid, considering my point about Command Zone actually still existing in all games, whereas MTV DOESN'T play music videos anymore.)
I think what's being argued that on the Command Zone, specifically, Game Knights, is most well known for Commander, And when a certain number of episodes are commander, the expectation for the viewer is that continues to be the case. They are trying to win the audience, the audience isn't trying to win them.
Matthew Bowerman Except they explicitly stated over and over it was the other way around: they merely STARTED with EDH because that is what their podcast was about, but always, always intended for it to be a separate series that grew into more. The first few episodes were similar to the first few eps of sitcom spinoff; similar theme/subject to get you acquainted (in this case, on the same channel as an EDH podcast, it made sense to start with a few eps of EDH). So you're saying people are effectively complaining Frasier is not Cheers! I mean, there was an expectation set up that Frasier Crane preferred a local bar to coffee houses, yet no-one minded when Frasier started doing something different. Same thing here, according to your own logic. Again: The main problem is no-one complaining understands how entertainment media product widening/spin-offs/whatever-you-wanna-call it actually work...if Games Knights itself ever became well-known for EDH, it's because its audiences clearly weren't listening to what they were explictly being told over and over in the intros/podcast/social media - "We have more than EDH planned for Game Knights". That was always the message. If people misunderstood that and had other expectations, it was their own stupidity and ignorance that led to those expectations.
Andrew. Bro. Chill. Its just a running joke now. They can do whatever the heck they want to or get paid to do with magic. What exactly are you doing other than wasting tons of time knighting for the command zone? Relax.
Elijah M Thompson Oh, I get it was a joke in the episode; I was explaining that to the people who constantly complain about the fact and constantly try to turn it into a real, genuine insult to the producers of the show, which is undeserved. I totally appreciate the makers themselves joke, but a lot of complaints here are just simple, real complaints about a lack of EDH, a complaint based on their own misunderstandings. Also I ramble, but don't confuse long rambles about the logic of it being a spin-off with emotional anger/frustration about the issue - I ramble as much when I get asked what I want to eat! As another example - all you really presented was an ad hominem attack with not a lot to actually argue against in a way that's relevant, yet I still managed to type a whole paragraph! So, to answer your question as to what I'm doing with my life? Not insulting people, at the very least! (Also please don't worry about me wasting my time - I can type very fast. That said, this whole conversation, combined, took about 3 minutes of my life, while watching the episode, which means I'd have only been on this page anyway, so no extra time was wasted with this conversation at all, even if I typed slowly. Genuinely, thanks for caring though!)
Wish i'd seen Mel's reaction to Vorinclex before thinking "hmm this would go well with the stuff in my deck" - learnt pretty quickly this is not a card to play if you're just getting back into magic, if you want friends.
Awesome seeing Craig back he's one of my favourite guests. Quote of the Game: That's such a jerk card for jerks! Love the content you guys put out keep up the good work.
I love the new animations. This is easily the Magic video series with the highest production value. You set the bar for what content creators can achieve.
MTG Mudstahh has great content too. The editing isn't flashy, but it's nice for people who really want to watch EDH. They don't cut to an interview about what EDH staples do every sixty seconds. Thats nice for beginners, but I don't need an explanation on what Land Tax or Consecrated Sphinx does, or to hear "Tribal cards get way worse when other cards of that type come out" or hear that death touch blockers are problematic for people who want to swing with big creatures, etc.
I'd ask myself the following questions: 1) If he doesn't have it, does he stand a reasonable chance to win by you giving him an extra turn? Since he's U/G, he probably doesn't have many other outs *besides* Rift. I don't see how he survives 110 power coming at him the next turn w/o Rift. He has Top and a bunch of engines, so he may be able to look at quite a few more cards. Let's assume there's maybe one other out in his deck. He's about 12% to see one of his two theoretical outs in 5 cards out of a ~80 card deck. So order of magnitude, I think you're >90% to win if he doesn't currently have it and you don't win this turn. Thus, I don't think you gain that much by closing the door on him this turn. 2) If he does have it, what play gives me the best chance to win, and how much does it matter? If you attack him and he has Rift, he clearly casts it, you get to redeploy your mana, as shown on the video, but you're not really doing anything with it anyway. If you don't attack him and he has Rift, he gets to essentially choose whether to cast the Rift now or to let you attack them and then. Without the tokens, his board looks much better than yours, while the other two players look pretty threatening, so if I'm him I probably let you wipe out Craig and damage Mel and then cast the Rift end of turn. He does have to worry about you gaining a ton of life, but we know he has Triumph of the Hordes, so that's not as big of a concern. The biggest factor here IMO, then, is whether or not you want Mel and Craig alive in the situation where he has the Rift. Since to me it looks like you're dominated by Jimmy post-Rift, I think you want to force Jimmy to let Craig and Mel stay alive by casting the Rift pre-damage. As you mention in the video, this gives you the potential to rebuild while the other players attack each other. I think this is your best line to stay alive. The last factors to consider of course are the odds that he does have the Rift -- but in this case it doesn't matter since either way the same play is superior -- and whether there are any longterm political implications to either play, but I don't see any notable ones here. Thus, I'd attack Jimmy. But not because of what happens if he doesn't have it, but rather, what happens if he does.
It hurt me so much when he decided to attack Jimmy. Ixalan Vampires is my favorite deck and that play was a dream come true. He would've gained so much life... 😔
I just got back into magic after a 4 year hiatus and I'm so glad I was able to find some friends to play with. I only have one deck right now that is the Adaptive Enchantments from Comm 18 pre con. Cannot wait to get more! Freaking love this game!!
Yay actual commander! Please try to keep Game Knights a commander series guys. You've easily got the best production quality in the biz and there isn't that much commander gameplay out there. Keep it up! The episode was sweet!
if you watch the episode jimmy uses his creatures to pay for a few abilities, now this wouldnt normally be a problem considering the enchantment he has out, but that enchant only lets the creatures tap for one not two so there are a few times where he tries to use only one creature to pay for an ability that costs 2 and honestly if he didnt cheat he wouldnt have won
I just want to say that this was the video that inspired me to try out the EDH format with a Kumena deck. Thanks, Jimmy, and of course The Command Zone!
Looking back on it, Craig being knighted by the sword of feast and famine is pretty funny, because he is all about infect. Even in the recent episode hes a member of the Witherbloom college.
I know this video is older but I never actually answered what I would’ve done prior to the cyclonic rift but for safety I would’ve just swung a ton at Craig to gain like a billion life
I think the correct answer would have been to swing at Craig with just three creatures, and maybe risk hitting Mel with two. All of the tokens having lifelink makes it hard to know if Jimmy would let the attack go, and not forcing the cyclonic rift out like he did would also mean it'd be a political tool, since he'd be saving everyone when he didn't have to
Yo me too! I was into it a few years ago but I needed the money and sold my collection (like 5000) cards. I just bought a booster box and a fat pack. Next purchase (when I actually have the money) is a commander deck. I used to have Plunder the Graves and it was my favourite thing to play with, so fuckin satisfying
I'D BAIT OUT THAT CYCLONIC RIFT NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!! If you are running tokens and you have that itch that you think your opponent has cyclonic rift...you gotta bait it out early so late game you are safer (excluding graveyard recursion) haha.
Thank you for posting your content. Its because of watching your channel ive now built my first commander deck. Its built around kethis the hidden hand. Im having a lot of fun, and just wanted to say thank you.
@Pariah I'd agree if she was playing anything really crazy. It was mostly mild slowdown. 1 counterspell in *that* many drawn cards, some stuff that slowed down a beat down, and a bunch of card draw that didn't result in much? I wish more Azorius players were that mild. Hell, she didn't even play her commander and her rhystic study netted like 2 cards.
Just started playing magic about 2 weeks ago I'm only going to use your affiliate link, just got a decent amount of cards for my first deck thanks to you guys.
holy shit the production quality here is amazing, first video I've ever seen from you guys. Props to everyone, especially the one producing these videos!
New guy to the channel, here are my comments. I love how you zoom in on any card that is played, describe what's going on, and make it interesting. I don't like how you cut to reality show style interviews that just seem unnecessary. All in all, 9/10 gonna watch again.
mel, you have been poisoned. Welcome to infect knights! btw, I would probably attack jimmy with the tokens too.if he's going to bounce everything, better to force it
I love how Mel's like "Vorinclex is such a jerk card for jerks. Who doesn't let other people play magic and untap their lands", and I'm like "says the woman playing a freakin' CONTROL deck!"
I really enjoy Mel in your games. She has fun, is funny, and makes some fun decks. While no one loves infect in our tables, I enjoy a little infect now and then, glad to have Craig back!! "Vorinclex, are you serious? Who puts that in a deck?" ROFLOLOLMAO I don't see him often but some people like being jerks ... like me lol.
I just wish she would pay more attention to other people's boards. She almost handed Josh the game and eventually handed it to Jimmy because she just wasn't seeing past her own board state to what other people had.
Small correction at 14:35 she doesn't have to hit the grave yard, she just has to die, it's an on death trigger so it doesn't care which zone she goes to
Jimmy only needed 7 mana for the Rift. This boy wanted the extra 1 up so he could spin the top for dramatic effect. This is the level of petty I strive to be.
The way it was edited in the video is definitely for dramatic effect, but from a gameplay perspective it's entirely possible that what Jimmy wanted to draw next would depend on whether or not he played Cyclonic Rift that turn

jqxok who cares?
imagine her and seth from mtggoldfish playing together.
Who's watching because Elenda is getting buffed with the new rules change?
Pure coincidence for me, but it definitely is interesting to think what that could of changed from this game.
Same
@@DarkRuler71 i don't know how much it would have changed but it would be a totally different game in how to play it.
@@pleasantjinx2224 made her the commander for my aristocrats deck, I love her synergy with aristocrats.
Super powerful now
I just got back into magic after a 4 year hiatus and I'm so glad I was able to find some friends to play with.
Keep it up! The episode was sweet!
except when jimmy cheats
UndertaleSkeleBros context please?
if you watch the episode jimmy uses his creatures to pay for a few abilities, now this wouldnt normally be a problem considering the enchantment he has out, but that enchant only lets the creatures tap for one not two
so there are a few times where he tries to use only one creature to pay for an ability that costs 2 and honestly if he didnt cheat he wouldnt have won
UndertaleSkeleBros Maybe it was a mistake?
I absolutely love Craig's line "Oh i've got enough he's coming out bro" haha so awesome
"I'm just here to draw cards man." Best line ever!!!
I just want to say that this was the video that inspired me to try out the EDH format with a Kumena deck. Thanks, Jimmy, and of course The Command Zone!
Great work as always guys - I got psyched when I saw both Mel and Craig as guests (they're my favorites) and the episode did not disappoint!
Happy to see some new EDH gameplay! Cheers Jimmy and Josh!
Deck Builder’s Society Love your videos man!
YES such a good episode. I'm so happy for the deck and player that won the match. Congrats to that person(don't wanna be a spoiler comment).
Mel is adorable.
Vara Satoshi 10/10 would smash
328crash agreed!!
She so hot
She's likeminded about Vornie boi too...!
And she has a great opinion on land denial
Looking back on it, Craig being knighted by the sword of feast and famine is pretty funny, because he is all about infect. Even in the recent episode hes a member of the Witherbloom college.
I know this video is older but I never actually answered what I would’ve done prior to the cyclonic rift but for safety I would’ve just swung a ton at Craig to gain like a billion life
I think the correct answer would have been to swing at Craig with just three creatures, and maybe risk hitting Mel with two. All of the tokens having lifelink makes it hard to know if Jimmy would let the attack go, and not forcing the cyclonic rift out like he did would also mean it'd be a political tool, since he'd be saving everyone when he didn't have to
@@TrulySilentLie Same. Would've gained 55 life and blockers to spare
Who the hell are you?
This episode is infectious
full swing at jimmy TAKE NO PRISONERS
Mr.Infect dying to infect lol GG
Brian Okafor why are you the way you are? Why post spoilers in the comments? People routinely look at he comments during the video.
Fen Bogarty because I can...u could just simply ignored the comments section and actually watch the video
live by the sword, die by the sword
SPOILERS!! god damn it man
I believe that's called being hoisted by ones own petard
30:12 "I'll bottom" Oh boy
I am band new to MTG just got my first EDH deck and am in love with this. Your vids have taught me a lot and cant wait to watch your next vid.
TJ Who is your Commander?
Arahbo, been looking around and wanna build a new or lol
YEEEESSSSS!!! WELCOME BACK CRAIG!
I got into the game cause of this. Bought some packs
Same
How's it been, still playing?
Make an commander decks? Have any cool 60 card decks? C'mon man details!
@@shades541 Can you convince me to play commander?
I've paused the video. I would swing 1 creature at Jimmy. Lethal on Craig. 2 at Mel.
I agree, just have more shit to counter than the blue player can handle. I cast Triumph of the Horde..... ok, I cast Craterhoof........
You know what Blue hates? 15 cards in hand and 30 something mana :)
that JLK smile shine @ 6:10 always cracks me up
Thank you for posting your content. Its because of watching your channel ive now built my first commander deck. Its built around kethis the hidden hand. Im having a lot of fun, and just wanted to say thank you.
WHO DOESNT LET OTHER PEOPLE PLAY MAGIC?? Blue players...... blue players.
And White. Iona and Humility and such are all White.
Ha!
Me too! BARAL!!
Glad1atoR Yes!! All about that Baral life. Though occasionally, Thassa is a really good substitute
*looks at Mel* hypocritical Azorius player
Player playing the most control complains about vorn daddy, happens all da time at my play group. Hypocritical af
Mel is the best! I love seeing her on Game Knights.
"That's a jerk card for jerks." Love JEN.
Pelif Zuil Raubiet You men Mel Li? Who is Jen?
Ryan Grier lol I think he mixed her up with Ms Mulligan 😂
Hahaha you're thinking of Commander Clash...
"Such a jerk card for jerks!" Favorite quote 2018
@Pariah I'd agree if she was playing anything really crazy. It was mostly mild slowdown. 1 counterspell in *that* many drawn cards, some stuff that slowed down a beat down, and a bunch of card draw that didn't result in much? I wish more Azorius players were that mild. Hell, she didn't even play her commander and her rhystic study netted like 2 cards.
@Pariah yeh nah blue white interaction is a good thing in edh, interrupts battle cruiser decks. I absolutely agree VVoH is a jerk card for jerks
Zacama is one of my favorite cards I love that Craig built a deck around him
Mel's Vorinclex induced meltdown had me rolling. Wonder why she isn't in more episodes as of late.
She works for Riot Games on Legends of Runeterra, so they probably dont want her supporting their competitor.
YES, Jimmy finally won a game! I'm so happy!
David Orians I’ve won 4 or 5 st this point! You can see in our earlier episodes :) -jimmy
I figured you would have by now, but this is the first since I started watching the show.
6:10 best part of all the video
So true
My new favourite channel on youtube ever. Thanks for making such great quality videos. This should be on television... Keep it up :D
Miss Craig and Mel. Bring them back to one of the episodes, boys.
I love Craig Blanchette so much, such a cool dude and his voice is so smouth.
I love that mel flips out on the land card with an AZORIUS shirt on of all colors
LOL Azorius Overlord
Just started playing magic about 2 weeks ago I'm only going to use your affiliate link, just got a decent amount of cards for my first deck thanks to you guys.
holy shit the production quality here is amazing, first video I've ever seen from you guys. Props to everyone, especially the one producing these videos!
Mel is my favorite guest! What a fun game.
When mel hits craig with the sword why he didn't discard a card?
Aluysio Neto I think it was just a missed trigger.
I wouldn't attack Jimmy becasue you risk Mel and Craig rebuilding and becoming 2 more threats in your way
agreed
This is the most Commander game of commander i have watched on here. Loved it!
5 years later and still holds up as great entertainment
When Craig cast triumph of the hordes, a song was playing. What is it called, or could you leave a link to it?
i love to see craig in the show ^^ #infectfanboy
Thespqr1997 For the might and glory of New Phyrexia!
Wow, Azor The Lawbringer works great with Teferi, Time Raveler and Thassa, Deep Dwelling!!
New guy to the channel, here are my comments. I love how you zoom in on any card that is played, describe what's going on, and make it interesting. I don't like how you cut to reality show style interviews that just seem unnecessary. All in all, 9/10 gonna watch again.
So the professor isn't crazy to like merfolk.
mel, you have been poisoned. Welcome to infect knights!
btw, I would probably attack jimmy with the tokens too.if he's going to bounce everything, better to force it
Define irony: A UW player complaining about not being able to play Magic
Patrick Herward RIGHT
Honestly Mel was straight up indignant about that shit
Patrick Herward true. But under circumstance, she wouldn't be able to be the UW player because she couldn't tap mana.
UW doesn't always have to be back-breaking control xD
corneal35 what kind of UW is she running tho 🤔🤔🤔
I am so lost 81.2% of these games, but I used to be 100% confused. Thanks for calling out the steps though. That helps me to learn this crazy game!
I love Mel's reaction when vorinclex came onto the battlefield
42:52, I see you looking at Josh's hand
Hahaha nice catch :D
The Prof probably loves the outcome here!
Great game, just found this. You guys are so entertaining. Thanks so much! Im really glad Kumena did so much work
I want one of those sword of feast and famine toys.
I agree with Mel: Vorinclex is such a pain in the ass...
That's why I love to take control of it with my Beckett Brass deck.
Yes love game knights! (so excited for episode with kathleen and graham)
vince s i really want to see that episode now I have ever since Graham teased it 😀 I need to see it now!
now picture this: Mel... playing against an actual stax deck.
I imagine if she complains about Vorinclex this much, she would be pulling her hair out against a true stax deck.
"Swamp, mana crypt, sol ring, dark ritual, smokestack, reassembling skeleton, pass turn....." *accidentally flashes the planned turn 2 winter orb in hand. - looks around.* ".... what?"
@@RoxyGotMoxy. decklist?
24:46 "It's ya boy he always has it" pro move there
Small correction at 14:35 she doesn't have to hit the grave yard, she just has to die, it's an on death trigger so it doesn't care which zone she goes to
No he was correct at the time. They changed the rule for commanders with death triggers at a later date.
