The free ramp or draw is pretty good on its own. But the free explore is insane. That 1 free mana of value for every merfolk, every turn. Its not flashy or immediately threatening but it will outvalue the table if not answered.
The Pirate deck is pretty bonkers, too. The abilities they put on the pirates are really strong. There's a lot more pirate synergy... And they recover from board wipes a lot better than Hakbal.
This is how basically every game I've seen and played with the merfolk go. If Halbal stsys on the battlefield for more than a couple turns, the deck can dig through its deck for enough bombs to win.

The power level of the merfolk deck out of the box is wild. He doesn't seem like a threat at first but Hakbal is absolutely a kill on sight general.

For real, in every gameplay vid I've seen they were archenemy and won most of the games. Most dissapointed by the dino deck tbh

It can get handled pretty easily and I have seen it run out of gas each time. I have seen Dino and vamps win more than anything

Missed the Xenagos trigger to give Etali haste for a miracle play..
They didn’t miss the trigger, it was used on the other creature which was subsequently removed. If it was given to Etali the same thing would happen
