What did I like about this post, well when conditions are not perfect you are still smiling, as a couple too, so precious indeed, my first sail was epic and dangerous but did not care, one said if I smile any harder my face will break and yeah it was true, the downside, no not going there.

I purchased an Ultra anchor 6 years ago and everyone told me I was crazy to spend what I did for that anchor. There is no price for peace of mind. We have never dragged or had any issue while watching other boats move all over anchorages. Enjoy your winter in Turkey. We love your adventures and your film making.
Yes, I still find it amazing people “despising" others spending couple thousands in the Ultra to keep their £££££+ asset safe when it also’s been proven to be far superior to the few hundred quid weekender’s anchor.
What we have on Cherokee Rose are bands sharpied on to the main halyard so the sequence is ease the mainsheet ease the halyard to the relevant mark (one two or three bands) in one go - the marks give plenty of slack to get the tack cringle to the rams horn, hook on the tack ring to the horn, re-tension the main halyard, then take up on the clew pennant - finally take up on the main sheet - and bob's yer whatsit seems to me to be quicker than the bit by bit method

Just amazed, having lost one dinghy, you were still towing your new one plus a £2,000 electric outboard at the stern ( albeit without the battery). Very good and interesting video . Great to see some sailing and docking again. Much more interesting compared to chattering with a lot of other youboaters! Your channel is by far the more interesting one. Meltemi seems to have lasted longer this year according to the locals. But it has also been a hotter summer. Just like 76 in the UK? Turkish hospitality is fantastic we have made a lot of new friends who just want to help out and make you feel welcome. If you get residency you can get a museum pass for around 77.00 Tl that gets you into almost all the sites and museums free. We love Turkey! Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

Given the state of the wind and sea, I'm amazed that you didn't take the outboard off the dinghy, nor for that matter stow the dinghy on board. You were lucky that only one of the dinghy's painters broke...............in those waves it would have been difficult to recapture the dinghy had it broken loose.
Ha Ha, brings back memories. We ended up at anchor, much closer in than you guys, in the same bay on Tinos, in the same conditions. Moved on into the harbour after couple of days, then across to Mikonos and that was hairy when the wind and waves hurtled down between the 2 islands.
Yes we only found out it was possible to go to the town quay when we got ashore on the last day, pilot book said there was nothing there for yachts. The distance thing is mainly a wide angle lens illusion, we actually had less than 2 meters under us so were much closer in than it looked!
Nice to see your boat maturely crashing through the waves and not behaving like a cork as some of those production yachts. Interesting to see how close you will dare to come to the Syrian border area in the coming winter.

Hi,very exhilarating sailing..takes me back to my dinghy sailing when I was a lad..as a retired tug man I have found it always pays to be wary of towing using soft rope knots or spliced eyes ..very much chafing points as you know..I think splices to hard points are an advantage..love your videos cheers Roly🇬🇧.
Yes my own stupid fault, the nice bridle that I made up, all spliced no knots got damaged and I just tied it together until I got around to making up a new one. Should have done it sooner.
To be honest we don't go that fast, we we're probably doing 7 knots there, but 26 tons pushing straight through the waves feels like a steam train on overdrive. It's actually an amazing feeling of pure power and all from the wind!
Sorry to raise that old chestnut again but "Lifejackets, useless unless worn". Really surprised to see Steve working up on deck without one and then the trip ashore in the dinghy. You always seem to have very logical and practical reasons for your views on sailing so I would be interested to know what you think....
Well it’s really quite simple. If conditions get such that I feel in any more danger on deck than I do in normal conditions, ie there’s a very strong or confused sea, we are pitching a lot or close to our gybe point, it’s dark, or the winds are super strong I wear a life jacket and probably clip on. ( the point at which that happens comes down if we are sailing off shore, it also comes down if I’m single handed as I explained in previous episodes) Other than that I don’t. In my opinion staying on the boat when you’re short handed as we are is the most important thing so if something makes me feel I’m in any danger of going over I do something about it. As someone else in the comments here said, being on deck in a force 7 warrants a life jacket and on the face of it a wholeheartedly agree with that in theory but in practice in those conditions on Fair Isle it felt in no more danger than a trip across the Solent in a force 4.
Waves over the doghouse! I remember going into West Loch Tarbert on Jura. I was only 500 yds offshore when I was hit by a massive downdraft from the mountains above. It must have have been 50 knots for a few minutes...enough to send massive waves over my sprayhood and me... Bill
Great video and a nice bit of reverse parking also. Gas is always a pain I feel but unless you have a boatload of solar there is probably no other option.
Our family lived in Turkey for 3 years and loved it. In Cesme you are close to two of our favorite places: The Greek/Roman city of Pergamon (Bergama in Turkish) and of course Ephesus. Other not-to-miss things in Turkey are Cappadocia (balloon rides through fiery chimneys, 7 story deep underground cities, cutout hotels in the side of a cliff [Elkep Evi Hotel], Desert Father's monasteries turned into small hotels [Hotel Karballa] and on the way there stay in Afyon and enjoy its spa hotels) and Antalya (ancient port, Greek/Roman theaters rebuilt and hosting live music concerts, Termessos, Mount Chimaera, and St. Nicholas). And the people are as friendly and helpful everywhere (except the big tourist spots) as you have already noticed in Cesme. I look forward to reliving our time in Turkey as you experience it and share it through your videos.

Whenever you need to hit those turkish characters just change your keyboard to turkish by clicking on the icon in the menu bar. ş is on the key with the single and double quotes on the right of the middle row, the one on the left of backslash \
Thanks for another great film. What's the deal with Grey and Black water for berth holders there? We have black water tanks, but no grey tanks from sinks and showers...
Good question, I don’t know anyone that has grey water storage. I’ve heard rumours too that it’s needed in Turkey, but certainly not here. Seems to be no black water issues either above the usual protocols. I think it’s stricter with black water further South in the more touristy areas around Marmaris & Bodrum etc. There’s a system of logging how big your black water tank is and how often you pump out at a dock & they even have waste barges that come around the anchorages and pump you out I’m told, but as I say no sign of any of that up here. Will keep you informed as we go.
We have some turkish words in the Montenegrin language, and Chesme (I think) means watertap or something like that. Looks nice. I was in Kushadasi in the nineties on my honeymoon. Turkey is a big and wonderful country to explore. :) Oh, and did you see Ryan and Sophies portable washing machine installation video? We are off to Montenegro in a week - and I plan to stay - well, perhaps forever? :D
We're enjoying Turkey but water-tap would be a good name for Cesme today as it hasn't stopped raining. Will have a look at Ryan and Sophies washing machine, but we find you meet the best people in search of washing!
Regarding reefing, we have tried in--mast and in boom main sails, and neither seem to get quite the right shape. We have tried single-line reefing, which always gets tangled up somewhere and is more trouble than it is worth. Despite the necessity to go up to the mast to reef, slab reefing is still, in our opinion, the best choice (though we do run the halyard back into the cockpit as well so that we can completely depower the main in an emergency.
yes it's a good point that running the halyard back to the cockpit gives you the opportunity to drop the main in an emergency & with a lighter more tender boat I might consider it, But Fair Isle is too stiff to come to grief with the usual sudden blast out of nowhere type problem so I'd much rather keep the ability to get the main up quick with the halyard at the mast rather than give myself loads of winching to do taking it back to the cockpit.
@@svfairisle We have set up a kind of compromise. The halyard is operated on the mast winch, but it is long enough that the tail comes back into the cockpit where it can be locked off and the jammer on the mast can be opened. It maintains tension, but means that if anything happens we can throw the jammer in the cockpit and the whole sail collapses.
Turkey has loads of competent and professional shipwrights around your area. But for a real flavour don’t miss Istanbul. And a day cruise around the Bosporus. Get off for lunch, there are excellent restaurants on the water with really original and sophisticated foods. Izmir is also interesting.
Congratulations on another excellent video. It can get cold in Turkey. Some years ago, we visited Istanbul at the end of December. A dusting of snow and some blustery winds. Merits a week stay if you can swing it. Ephesus remains on my “ bucket list.” Some years ago Sunsail, our Carter company, had an operation on the Turkish coast. Never made it, however. Does the marina provide electricity?
Yes we will certainly visit Ephesus, the list is getting quite long of place to visit here! The marina is top notch. Yes water and electric and also the fastest Wifi we've had at any marina!
Turkey has strict rules on black water and even grey water, but who has grey water tanks? I don't think you're allowed to pump out black water off shore anywhere in Turkish waters. In practice things may be different of course but yes you should pump out at the dock and they even have boats that come around to pump out from the deck at anchor I'm told. But we will have to see how everything works in practice as we sail around.
Love watching your channel. Its been maybe a year since you put the Digital Yacht system in for extending your cell phone coverage, how is that product working out? Would you recommend it?
That's a good question, and to be honest I'm not sure I would recommend it. At the moment it's doing a great job as it's boosting the marina wifi from something that can just about send an email to something we can easily stream Netflix on, so yes it's great. But there have been times this year when the clunky software has just been SOOO annoying,. I had planned on talking to them this winter and seeing if I'm missing something and it could be made to work better and more consistently, i'm worried that I'm doing them down by not being the best at computer software. But having said that there are plenty of people out there much worse than me so it should be possible to make it so you dont have to spend an hour fiddling with the bloody thing every time you change country and want to insert a new sim card, or switch from 4G to Wifi.
Thanks for the replies below. I'm interested in the clip hooks at the gooseneck you use for reefing. I see they hang from rings on the end of the through bolt. Can you show/explain how those rings are attached. I want to replace the reefing horns I have at present. The reef sometimes slips off the horn. I'll use the method on yours or a dyneema eye splice. Bill
I'm afraid I dont know the manufacturer as they were on the boat when we got her. There is a W printed on the side. As you say its a through bolt with a ring and clip on both sides, so I guess one side is threaded and screws into the other.
Yes the ring and the clip seem to be integral and made as a pair. One couldn't fit the clip onto the ring oneself. I'll have to see if I can find clips that will slide onto the rings ......
Great episode, thanks very much. It was impressive to see Fair Isle graciously ride the waves, minimal healing, with the wind gusting to 40kts. Pretty skilful stern to mooring too. Noticed your hand held vhf, couldn’t make out the make. What is it and are you happy with it?
Thanks steve, on the reefing you didn't mention the topping lift, does your vang take care of that? I like to get the boom up so its easier to get leech pulled down tight without too much effort, I never bother with the first reef, I just go for the second. I'm surprised you guys didn't have your water wings on in the dinghy in that wind.
That’s a good point I did have another section talking about the why I don’t take lines back to the cockpit and talking about the vang, but it was getting long so didn’t make the edit. I do have a topping lift but it just a spare main halyard, the bang does do all the work. So yes to control the leach you can tighten the vang. Hard on the wind though the vang is already well down and the main sheet can do the job. If I were on a reach or a run I would be working the vang because the angle is wrong for the main sheet. So yes on those points of sail lift the boom with the vang then drop it when the reef is done.
It's Canon in D Major. I often include a well known classical tune,. We've had Air on a G string and Vivaldi four seasons in recent episodes always gets people thinking!

Just keep corking in good condition and replace any missing bungs from the screw holes. I've done a video on replacing the bungs and I think the general winter boat jobs shows corking. There's some good tools you can get which are helpful
That looked a little scary. It got me wondering if you remembered the point where you lost any fear while sailing as your confidence and ability developed? I watch a lot of sailing channels and I now feel your yacht seems the safest and best crewed. Your ability, knowledge, common sensed and meticulous attention seems so total, I wonder if there's anything you haven't a good grasp of.
Ha! Well I’m glad it looks that way! To be honest if you have a boat that you know you can depend on your can relax a LOT more. You do need to keep on top of thing, maintenance and just knowing what your method of dealing with various things that might get thrown at you is. So there’s often a lot to think about, but having done that you can hopefully just get on calmly with implementing it.
One September we did that journey the other way round heading to Athens in Meltemi, got 53 knots crossing the channel between Tinos and Andros. I was on the helm as coskipper, as the skipper came up from a nap in his cabin, tumbled in the cockpit and tried to get support from the handle at the compass, which immediately broke off and he fell down. He broke his femur, wich already had a fresh endoprothesis. Bad luck for him, but we kept him in his bunk for the next 3 days until we reached the harbour, then got confirmation by x ray and flew him home right on to the operation theater. After that he gave up sailing.And i myself am still looking for a boat to live on. Love the HCs . Good luck to you both!
That doesn't sound good, we are very lucky with Fair Isle there are no bits that are going to break off and no open spaces to fall either. It is a problem with modern boat design that boats are built for having a party it seems, not for sailing! You need a compromise of course depending on what sort of sailing you intend to do so although Fair Isle isn't the greatest boat for having lots of friends over for drinks she'll look after you in any weather.
@@svfairisle Yes, it is the solidity, that has gone on that modern huge cockpit charterboats. I knew that compass handle was not any stabile but he in his hangover did not. I Like HC Trintellas Choy Lee s , Hallbergs, Najds Contests and so on. Need two cabins and a lot of storing capacyty. I even was looking after your boat in Holland at that time, but could not yet sell my clinic and my home at that time. But now its the time!!! Keep on going making that good videos and stay safe. We could not wait for a weather window , the boat had to be back at times..Thats not the way a sailer should go
You can stay for 90 days as a visitor, if you want to stay longer than you apply for short term residency which lasts a year but we know people who have gone back on multiple years. We will tell you about that when we've done it. Checking in was easy at Cesme but was slightly hindered by the fact everyone had run out of transit logs! We went straight to the harbour master who would normally have transit logs and you can fill that in there and then go to the ports police and get stamped in. Would have been that straight forward if they hadn't run out of transit logs, but they had. So we then did have to find an agent who had a transit log and use them, which was fine. I think the only reason to use an agent in reality is to translate at the harbour masters office but in our case the harbour master spoke better English than the agent so if it wasn't for the transit log we would have been fine.

Yes I think YT always puts the current series up with the latest episode first which sort of makes sense I suppose I know that some channels have a 'Binge watch from the top' playlist. I wonder if I made a playlist like that it would be better?
Oh I've spoken about that a lot.... it doesn't, behave that is! Have a look at the 'Back & Fill' video if you're interested in how full keeled boats handle. In reverse the rudder does nothing, really I can go full lock from one side to the other with zero effect. Fair Isle doesn't have much prop walk either so although the little bit it has will take her starboard wind and current have more effect so I usually just go astern and see which way she's going to drift. From there on I'm using the bow thruster and back & fill to steer.
HI, I hope it is OK to ask a question as I will be doing what you did next year where I will be running out of visa days going from Greece to Turkey. I noticed you stopped at Tilos, but assumed you had already checked out of Greece. Did you have any problems stopping off on the way to Turkey?
Yes I was very tight for days in Greece, Judy had more because she had been back to the UK for a few weeks. We decided there was less chance of getting a fine for checking out in Mykonos and then not getting straight out (which is what happened because of the weather) than checking out much closer to Turkey having gone over 90 days. As it turned out know one seemed to care at all. The Greeks didn't check how many days we had been in Schengen and the Turks didn't care that we arrived there having checked out of Greece a long time before. I hope that this 90 day rule will actually just become irrelevant because no one will check or care. As my father keeps telling me thats what happened before Schengen, when he first sailed the Med there was a 90 day rule, but he ended up staying in Mallorca for 35 years! Just don't try anything like this in Croatia, they track you on AIS and will come out by speed boat to fine you if you dont leave immediately by the quickest route.

It's 90 days without a visa, but you can get an extension (temporary residency) quite easily and inexpensively we are told. We will report n it when it's done.
Well we can lock the companion way doors yes and the boat starts with a key, but boats aren't that secure to be honest. Luckily boat break in's seem to be very rare.
I always thought there were issues with sailing directly from Greece to Turkey and vice versa. You mentioned your expensive ground tackle. I don't think you can put a price on peace of mind. OK if you only intend to chuck the hook in to have lunch and a swim then return to the marina then you might? get away with a cheaper setup but as a liveaboard not so much.

@@svfairisle Hadn't meant to offend. I am in the process of buying a boat and yours is the go to channel for good advice. You have a few videos promoting items and I think its helpful if you confirm if you've been gifted the item or paid to promote it.
@ No offence taken. We very rarely have a paid advert, it’s usually when we’ve crashed a drone or drown a camera to get production going again! These are always introduced as our sponsors and have the YT notice of paid advertising at the start of the video. As for what we pay for products, well we rarely pay full price. Manufacturers want there products on our boat but I am very picky about what comes on Fair Isle, I believe in getting the best products not going cheap and having thing break often. We have an absolute policy of being frank though, I’ve sent back an electric outboard (Aquamot) and give things like the Digital Yachts system 1/10 in our long term review. This actually helps us because manufacturers who don’t have 100% faith in their products don’t want us to have it in case we call it out. It’s a very good way of weeding out sub standard gear!

By this time, I shouldn't be, yet, I still am astounded how many youtube sailors I see that don't even consider safety harnesses & jack lines, especially in a force 7 wind. Please be more careful in the future; it's all fun & games until someone who should be onboard, isn't. I do enjoy your videos, but could you please show more scenes of the boat while it's sailing. That is my main reason for viewing. Mmm...I do love Turkish coffee, but 6 months? You could have made it to Cape Town, and enjoyed another summer.
I certainly do very carefully consider when to wear a harness. It maybe difficult from your armchair to assess what conditions are like on a boat and I agree on most boats a force 7 would mean it's time to think about the harness. I wouldn't expect to be wandering around the deck of a boat in a force 6 with one hand holding a camera filming putting a reef in the main sail either, but as you can see it really isn't a problem on Fair Isle.

I am quite familiar with Hans Christian designs (certainly one of the best designed & constructed as well as being one of the most beautiful sailing vessels out there). The OXI in OXI Day (pronounced a soft oche) means No. One of the 4 most useful words in Greek along with yes, please and thanks, you should have learned it after 3 months in the place.. Most nations celebrate the end of wars but us weird Greeks celebrate the start.. Too bad you didn't have the opportunity to visit Tinos villages and countryside as there is where its beauty lies. Please make a note of the 25th of March too as this is also a national holiday, celebrating the start of another war. Pointless to look for open shops at that date too.
Also just realised that today is the UK's day of remembrance. Armistice Day or 'Poppy day' where everyone wears a poppy. We only have this one day and it's not a holiday. The UK is really missing a trick as we don't have any of these holidays, they're great!

Since you mentioned that, today is the date Chios island, the large island just a few miles west of where you are was seized by Greek forces from the Ottoman Empire back in 1912, during the Balkan wars. Since the great majority of the population was Greek, Greeks say it was liberated so no shops are open on Chios today..lol.. If you have the opportunity visit Chios. It has wonderful well preserved medieval villages and produces the second best ouzo in the country, if you're thus inclined. Schengen is a pain in the butt but you Brits brought that upon yourselves..
We won't stay in the marina for 6 months, Judy meant in Turkey for at least 6 months as we want to explore. There's a price list on their website... cesmemarina.com.tr/en/cesme-marina-turkey/ obviously depends on the size of your boat but for us this is cheaper than most marinas in the Western Med. We will have the boat lifted here as they have a good yard and a big travel lift, then sail North to Istanbul probably as soon as the weather is kind, then stop back here to see the area in early summer before heading South, and maybe back West, who knows!

What we have on Cherokee Rose are bands sharpied on to the main halyard so the sequence is ease the mainsheet ease the halyard to the relevant mark (one two or three bands) in one go - the marks give plenty of slack to get the tack cringle to the rams horn, hook on the tack ring to the horn, re-tension the main halyard, then take up on the clew pennant - finally take up on the main sheet - and bob's yer whatsit seems to me to be quicker than the bit by bit method

Meltemi seems to have lasted longer this year according to the locals. But it has also been a hotter summer. Just like 76 in the UK? Turkish hospitality is fantastic we have made a lot of new friends who just want to help out and make you feel welcome. If you get residency you can get a museum pass for around 77.00 Tl that gets you into almost all the sites and museums free. We love Turkey! Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

Given the state of the wind and sea, I'm amazed that you didn't take the outboard off the dinghy, nor for that matter stow the dinghy on board. You were lucky that only one of the dinghy's painters broke...............in those waves it would have been difficult to recapture the dinghy had it broken loose.

Ha Ha, brings back memories. We ended up at anchor, much closer in than you guys, in the same bay on Tinos, in the same conditions. Moved on into the harbour after couple of days, then across to Mikonos and that was hairy when the wind and waves hurtled down between the 2 islands.
Yes we only found out it was possible to go to the town quay when we got ashore on the last day, pilot book said there was nothing there for yachts. The distance thing is mainly a wide angle lens illusion, we actually had less than 2 meters under us so were much closer in than it looked!

Hi,very exhilarating sailing..takes me back to my dinghy sailing when I was a lad..as a retired tug man I have found it always pays to be wary of towing using soft rope knots or spliced eyes ..very much chafing points as you know..I think splices to hard points are an advantage..love your videos cheers Roly🇬🇧.
Yes my own stupid fault, the nice bridle that I made up, all spliced no knots got damaged and I just tied it together until I got around to making up a new one. Should have done it sooner.

To be honest we don't go that fast, we we're probably doing 7 knots there, but 26 tons pushing straight through the waves feels like a steam train on overdrive. It's actually an amazing feeling of pure power and all from the wind!

Sorry to raise that old chestnut again but "Lifejackets, useless unless worn". Really surprised to see Steve working up on deck without one and then the trip ashore in the dinghy. You always seem to have very logical and practical reasons for your views on sailing so I would be interested to know what you think....
Well it’s really quite simple. If conditions get such that I feel in any more danger on deck than I do in normal conditions, ie there’s a very strong or confused sea, we are pitching a lot or close to our gybe point, it’s dark, or the winds are super strong I wear a life jacket and probably clip on. ( the point at which that happens comes down if we are sailing off shore, it also comes down if I’m single handed as I explained in previous episodes) Other than that I don’t. In my opinion staying on the boat when you’re short handed as we are is the most important thing so if something makes me feel I’m in any danger of going over I do something about it. As someone else in the comments here said, being on deck in a force 7 warrants a life jacket and on the face of it a wholeheartedly agree with that in theory but in practice in those conditions on Fair Isle it felt in no more danger than a trip across the Solent in a force 4.
Waves over the doghouse! I remember going into West Loch Tarbert on Jura. I was only 500 yds offshore when I was hit by a massive downdraft from the mountains above. It must have have been 50 knots for a few minutes...enough to send massive waves over my sprayhood and me... Bill
Yes we had the same thing off Gibraltar, we filmed it in one of the episodes in series 1. Katabatic winds can be a shock!
Great video and a nice bit of reverse parking also. Gas is always a pain I feel but unless you have a boatload of solar there is probably no other option.
Our family lived in Turkey for 3 years and loved it. In Cesme you are close to two of our favorite places: The Greek/Roman city of Pergamon (Bergama in Turkish) and of course Ephesus. Other not-to-miss things in Turkey are Cappadocia (balloon rides through fiery chimneys, 7 story deep underground cities, cutout hotels in the side of a cliff [Elkep Evi Hotel], Desert Father's monasteries turned into small hotels [Hotel Karballa] and on the way there stay in Afyon and enjoy its spa hotels) and Antalya (ancient port, Greek/Roman theaters rebuilt and hosting live music concerts, Termessos, Mount Chimaera, and St. Nicholas). And the people are as friendly and helpful everywhere (except the big tourist spots) as you have already noticed in Cesme. I look forward to reliving our time in Turkey as you experience it and share it through your videos.

@@svfairisleOn the Mac, go to language preferences and add Turkish as a keyboard language. Select the first option. You will see a pic of the keyboard layout while doing that. Whenever you need to hit those turkish characters just change your keyboard to turkish by clicking on the icon in the menu bar. ş is on the key with the single and double quotes on the right of the middle row, the one on the left of backslash \
Baz, if you're going to write Çeşme like that then you should write Tinos as Τήνος too mate.
Thanks for another great film. What's the deal with Grey and Black water for berth holders there? We have black water tanks, but no grey tanks from sinks and showers...
Good question, I don’t know anyone that has grey water storage. I’ve heard rumours too that it’s needed in Turkey, but certainly not here. Seems to be no black water issues either above the usual protocols. I think it’s stricter with black water further South in the more touristy areas around Marmaris & Bodrum etc. There’s a system of logging how big your black water tank is and how often you pump out at a dock & they even have waste barges that come around the anchorages and pump you out I’m told, but as I say no sign of any of that up here. Will keep you informed as we go.
We have some turkish words in the Montenegrin language, and Chesme (I think) means watertap or something like that. Looks nice. I was in Kushadasi in the nineties on my honeymoon.
Turkey is a big and wonderful country to explore. :)

Regarding reefing, we have tried in--mast and in boom main sails, and neither seem to get quite the right shape. We have tried single-line reefing, which always gets tangled up somewhere and is more trouble than it is worth. Despite the necessity to go up to the mast to reef, slab reefing is still, in our opinion, the best choice (though we do run the halyard back into the cockpit as well so that we can completely depower the main in an emergency.
yes it's a good point that running the halyard back to the cockpit gives you the opportunity to drop the main in an emergency & with a lighter more tender boat I might consider it, But Fair Isle is too stiff to come to grief with the usual sudden blast out of nowhere type problem so I'd much rather keep the ability to get the main up quick with the halyard at the mast rather than give myself loads of winching to do taking it back to the cockpit.
@@svfairisle We have set up a kind of compromise. The halyard is operated on the mast winch, but it is long enough that the tail comes back into the cockpit where it can be locked off and the jammer on the mast can be opened. It maintains tension, but means that if anything happens we can throw the jammer in the cockpit and the whole sail collapses.

Turkey has loads of competent and professional shipwrights around your area. But for a real flavour don’t miss Istanbul. And a day cruise around the Bosporus. Get off for lunch, there are excellent restaurants on the water with really original and sophisticated foods. Izmir is also interesting.

Congratulations on another excellent video. It can get cold in Turkey. Some years ago, we visited Istanbul at the end of December. A dusting of snow and some blustery winds. Merits a week stay if you can swing it. Ephesus remains on my “ bucket list.” Some years ago Sunsail, our Carter company, had an operation on the Turkish coast. Never made it, however. Does the marina provide electricity?
Yes we will certainly visit Ephesus, the list is getting quite long of place to visit here! The marina is top notch. Yes water and electric and also the fastest Wifi we've had at any marina!
Quality ground tackle is a sailors best insurance!
Does Turkey allow you to empty black water before mooring, or due you have to empty at dockside?
Turkey has strict rules on black water and even grey water, but who has grey water tanks? I don't think you're allowed to pump out black water off shore anywhere in Turkish waters. In practice things may be different of course but yes you should pump out at the dock and they even have boats that come around to pump out from the deck at anchor I'm told. But we will have to see how everything works in practice as we sail around.
Bloody hell, "back to the boat" without what is needed. So frustrating all the non-productive holidays. I could go on but it eventually works out.
We had a good lunch out so all was not lost!
Love watching your channel. Its been maybe a year since you put the Digital Yacht system in for extending your cell phone coverage, how is that product working out? Would you recommend it?
That's a good question, and to be honest I'm not sure I would recommend it. At the moment it's doing a great job as it's boosting the marina wifi from something that can just about send an email to something we can easily stream Netflix on, so yes it's great. But there have been times this year when the clunky software has just been SOOO annoying,. I had planned on talking to them this winter and seeing if I'm missing something and it could be made to work better and more consistently, i'm worried that I'm doing them down by not being the best at computer software. But having said that there are plenty of people out there much worse than me so it should be possible to make it so you dont have to spend an hour fiddling with the bloody thing every time you change country and want to insert a new sim card, or switch from 4G to Wifi.
Have you thought about a diesil cooker/oven to solve your gas issues ?
To be honest no, I'd thought about alcohol stoves but not diesel. I'll have to look into it.

Thanks for the replies below. I'm interested in the clip hooks at the gooseneck you use for reefing. I see they hang from rings on the end of the through bolt. Can you show/explain how those rings are attached. I want to replace the reefing horns I have at present. The reef sometimes slips off the horn. I'll use the method on yours or a dyneema eye splice. Bill
I'm afraid I dont know the manufacturer as they were on the boat when we got her. There is a W printed on the side. As you say its a through bolt with a ring and clip on both sides, so I guess one side is threaded and screws into the other.
Yes the ring and the clip seem to be integral and made as a pair. One couldn't fit the clip onto the ring oneself. I'll have to see if I can find clips that will slide onto the rings ......

The hand held VHF is an Icom ICM25, very happy with it always worked really well and seems to stay charged forever (charges by micro USB)

Thanks steve, on the reefing you didn't mention the topping lift, does your vang take care of that? I like to get the boom up so its easier to get leech pulled down tight without too much effort, I never bother with the first reef, I just go for the second.
I'm surprised you guys didn't have your water wings on in the dinghy in that wind.
That’s a good point I did have another section talking about the why I don’t take lines back to the cockpit and talking about the vang, but it was getting long so didn’t make the edit. I do have a topping lift but it just a spare main halyard, the bang does do all the work. So yes to control the leach you can tighten the vang. Hard on the wind though the vang is already well down and the main sheet can do the job. If I were on a reach or a run I would be working the vang because the angle is wrong for the main sheet. So yes on those points of sail lift the boom
with the vang then drop it when the reef is done.

Just keep corking in good condition and replace any missing bungs from the screw holes. I've done a video on replacing the bungs and I think the general winter boat jobs shows corking. There's some good tools you can get which are helpful
That looked a little scary. It got me wondering if you remembered the point where you lost any fear while sailing as your confidence and ability developed? I watch a lot of sailing channels and I now feel your yacht seems the safest and best crewed. Your ability, knowledge, common sensed and meticulous attention seems so total, I wonder if there's anything you haven't a good grasp of.
Ha! Well I’m glad it looks that way! To be honest if you have a boat that you know you can depend on your can relax a LOT more. You do need to keep on top of thing, maintenance and just knowing what your method of dealing with various things that might get thrown at you is. So there’s often a lot to think about, but having done that you can hopefully just get on calmly with implementing it.
@@svfairisleYes I ought to have mentioned how sturdy and solid the boat is. She's my number one pick in Fantasy Sea Exploration.
One September we did that journey the other way round heading to Athens in Meltemi, got 53 knots crossing the channel between Tinos and Andros. I was on the helm as coskipper, as the skipper came up from a nap in his cabin,
tumbled in the cockpit and tried to get support from the handle at the compass, which immediately broke off and he fell down. He broke his femur, wich already had a fresh endoprothesis. Bad luck for him, but we kept him in his bunk for the next 3 days until we reached the harbour, then got confirmation by x ray and flew him home right on to the operation theater. After that he gave up sailing.And i myself am still looking for a boat to live on. Love the HCs . Good luck to you both!
That doesn't sound good, we are very lucky with Fair Isle there are no bits that are going to break off and no open spaces to fall either. It is a problem with modern boat design that boats are built for having a party it seems, not for sailing! You need a compromise of course depending on what sort of sailing you intend to do so although Fair Isle isn't the greatest boat for having lots of friends over for drinks she'll look after you in any weather.
@@svfairisle Yes, it is the solidity, that has gone on that modern huge cockpit charterboats. I knew that compass handle was not any stabile but he in his hangover did not. I Like HC Trintellas Choy Lee s , Hallbergs, Najds Contests and so on. Need two cabins and a lot of storing capacyty. I even was looking after your boat in Holland at that time, but could not yet sell my clinic and my home at that time. But now its the time!!! Keep on going making that good videos and stay safe. We could not wait for a weather window , the boat had to be back at times..Thats not the way a sailer should go

You can stay for 90 days as a visitor, if you want to stay longer than you apply for short term residency which lasts a year but we know people who have gone back on multiple years. We will tell you about that when we've done it. Checking in was easy at Cesme but was slightly hindered by the fact everyone had run out of transit logs! We went straight to the harbour master who would normally have transit logs and you can fill that in there and then go to the ports police and get stamped in. Would have been that straight forward if they hadn't run out of transit logs, but they had. So we then did have to find an agent who had a transit log and use them, which was fine. I think the only reason to use an agent in reality is to translate at the harbour masters office but in our case the harbour master spoke better English than the agent so if it wasn't for the transit log we would have been fine.

How does your boat behave in reverse mate?
Oh I've spoken about that a lot.... it doesn't, behave that is! Have a look at the 'Back & Fill' video if you're interested in how full keeled boats handle. In reverse the rudder does nothing, really I can go full lock from one side to the other with zero effect. Fair Isle doesn't have much prop walk either so although the little bit it has will take her starboard wind and current have more effect so I usually just go astern and see which way she's going to drift. From there on I'm using the bow thruster and back & fill to steer.
HI, I hope it is OK to ask a question as I will be doing what you did next year where I will be running out of visa days going from Greece to Turkey. I noticed you stopped at Tilos, but assumed you had already checked out of Greece. Did you have any problems stopping off on the way to Turkey?
Yes I was very tight for days in Greece, Judy had more because she had been back to the UK for a few weeks. We decided there was less chance of getting a fine for checking out in Mykonos and then not getting straight out (which is what happened because of the weather) than checking out much closer to Turkey having gone over 90 days. As it turned out know one seemed to care at all. The Greeks didn't check how many days we had been in Schengen and the Turks didn't care that we arrived there having checked out of Greece a long time before. I hope that this 90 day rule will actually just become irrelevant because no one will check or care. As my father keeps telling me thats what happened before Schengen, when he first sailed the Med there was a 90 day rule, but he ended up staying in Mallorca for 35 years! Just don't try anything like this in Croatia, they track you on AIS and will come out by speed boat to fine you if you dont leave immediately by the quickest route.

It's 90 days without a visa, but you can get an extension (temporary residency) quite easily and inexpensively we are told. We will report n it when it's done.
When you leave to go ashore can you lock and immobilise the boat like a car?
Well we can lock the companion way doors yes and the boat starts with a key, but boats aren't that secure to be honest. Luckily boat break in's seem to be very rare.
I always thought there were issues with sailing directly from Greece to Turkey and vice versa.
You mentioned your expensive ground tackle. I don't think you can put a price on peace of mind. OK if you only intend to chuck the hook in to have lunch and a swim then return to the marina then you might? get away with a cheaper setup but as a liveaboard not so much.

@ No offence taken. We very rarely have a paid advert, it’s usually when we’ve crashed a drone or drown a camera to get production going again! These are always introduced as our sponsors and have the YT notice of paid advertising at the start of the video. As for what we pay for products, well we rarely pay full price. Manufacturers want there products on our boat but I am very picky about what comes on Fair Isle, I believe in getting the best products not going cheap and having thing break often. We have an absolute policy of being frank though, I’ve sent back an electric outboard (Aquamot) and give things like the Digital Yachts system 1/10 in our long term review. This actually helps us because manufacturers who don’t have 100% faith in their products don’t want us to have it in case we call it out. It’s a very good way of weeding out sub standard gear!

By this time, I shouldn't be, yet, I still am astounded how many youtube sailors I see that don't even consider safety harnesses & jack lines, especially in a force 7 wind. Please be more careful in the future; it's all fun & games until someone who should be onboard, isn't.

Mmm...I do love Turkish coffee, but 6 months? You could have made it to Cape Town, and enjoyed another summer.
I certainly do very carefully consider when to wear a harness. It maybe difficult from your armchair to assess what conditions are like on a boat and I agree on most boats a force 7 would mean it's time to think about the harness. I wouldn't expect to be wandering around the deck of a boat in a force 6 with one hand holding a camera filming putting a reef in the main sail either, but as you can see it really isn't a problem on Fair Isle.
@@svfairisle I apologize if I came across as short, but it's a bad feeling when you return to shore missing a crewman. I am quite familiar with Hans Christian designs (certainly one of the best designed & constructed as well as being one of the most beautiful sailing vessels out there). There are plenty of things I will happily play fast & loose with, yet I will always ere on the side of safety. Enjoy your winter, & I look forward to future videos.

The OXI in OXI Day (pronounced a soft oche) means No. One of the 4 most useful words in Greek along with yes, please and thanks, you should have learned it after 3 months in the place.. Most nations celebrate the end of wars but us weird Greeks celebrate the start.. Too bad you didn't have the opportunity to visit Tinos villages and countryside as there is where its beauty lies. Please make a note of the 25th of March too as this is also a national holiday, celebrating the start of another war. Pointless to look for open shops at that date too.

Also just realised that today is the UK's day of remembrance. Armistice Day or 'Poppy day' where everyone wears a poppy. We only have this one day and it's not a holiday. The UK is really missing a trick as we don't have any of these holidays, they're great!

Since you mentioned that, today is the date Chios island, the large island just a few miles west of where you are was seized by Greek forces from the Ottoman Empire back in 1912, during the Balkan wars. Since the great majority of the population was Greek, Greeks say it was liberated so no shops are open on Chios today..lol.. If you have the opportunity visit Chios. It has wonderful well preserved medieval villages and produces the second best ouzo in the country, if you're thus inclined. Schengen is a pain in the butt but you Brits brought that upon yourselves..
Well we're going to have to know where the best Ouzo is now!

How much will it cost to stay in the marina for 6 months?
We won't stay in the marina for 6 months, Judy meant in Turkey for at least 6 months as we want to explore. There's a price list on their website... cesmemarina.com.tr/en/cesme-marina-turkey/ obviously depends on the size of your boat but for us this is cheaper than most marinas in the Western Med. We will have the boat lifted here as they have a good yard and a big travel lift, then sail North to Istanbul probably as soon as the weather is kind, then stop back here to see the area in early summer before heading South, and maybe back West, who knows!
